THE NASHVILLE NUMBER SYSTEM by Chas Williams Book Review by Alice Franceschini If you want to play\jam with the big boys you have got to know what they know. They know "The Nashville Number System". They know it well. And they use it. So can you. Chas Williams has written a well thought out, a well researched book entitled "The Nashville Number System". He brings to this book not only his talent in explaining this system to musicians of all skill levels but gives a feeling of "real life" experience to the book because this is the system Chas actually uses in recording studios and live performances. Getting this kind of information from someone who actually uses it, is priceless---but you can get the book for $14.95 plus 4.00 shipping and handling. Don't let the word Nashville mislead you. This well written information can be used by any style musician. This system will allow quicker tabbing, quicker write down of song ideas, quicker communication with other musicians, really-fast transposing of songs, and that's just a few of the benefits. I thought I understood this system before I read "The Nashville Number System" by Chas Williams but this book really did enlightening me further. This is one book every musician should have in their reference libraries. Yes, I am impressed with this book but I did find a flaw. On page 7 is a table called the Major Scales and Number Substitution Table. Basic music theory does not support the existence of a Cb Fb B# E#. Basic music theory states that whole notes will stay whole going up or down the scale. Half notes are both a sharp and a flat note. This chart misleading allows one to think that B and Cb are the same thing. But basic music theory supports Bb while it does not support Cb. So this chart is more of an understanding and is not completely supported by music theory. I talked with Chas and he said he would research this flaw and will adjust his next edition of this book. I proudly own this book. Understanding this system is something every musician should do so I am recommending it. Chas has a web site so check it out. Chas Williams "The Nashville Number System" |
