TIP: STAY TUNED QUESTION: How can I keep my axe in tune? MYTH: Use an electronic tuner and it will be fine.
SOLUTION: 1) Make sure your strings are properly stretched. Don't expect to put on a new set of strings, tune up and be ready to go. They need to be stretched to hold proper tuning. Pull or tug at the strings until you can tune them to pitch and have them stay there. An electronic tuner aids this process because it offers an easy reference for tuning. Additionally, change your strings periodically - don't go six months without changing them. Old strings never stay in tune. 2) The nut is also very important. A badly cut nut will be a never ending source of problems for tuning. The nut should fit the string gauge you use properly to stay in tune. If it is too tight, the string will be pinched and won't stay in tune when bent or played. The string will end up playing flat. If the nut slot is too big, then the string may snap out of the slot completely. So if staying tune seems impossible, one thing to check out is the nut. 3) Good tuners can help staying in tune. Cheap or inexpensive tuners may not hold the string properly and make precise tuning impossible. However, more often than not the tuning machines are working properly, so only check them if all else fails. 4) Good tuning technique is absolutely necessary. Yes, there is a technique to it. Always approach the correct pitch from below. In other words, go from flat to the correct pitch not sharp to the correct pitch. If you are tuning the 'B' string, don't down tune down to the 'B' but rather make sure you are flat and slowly tune up until on pitch. If you happen to over tighten and go sharp, put the string flat and bring it up to pitch again. This helps the string get wrapped properly to hold its pitch better.
