JIMI HENDRIX R.I.P. (27 Nov 1942 - 18 Sep 1970)
We focus on the 29th anniversary of the passing away of a legend this week... Self-taught guitarist James Hendrix met bassist Billy Cox in the Air Force, and they formed a group. In June 1966, Hendrix, now in New York, formed Jimmy James And The Blue Flames, and was persuaded by Chas Chandler to go to London. Auditions were held for Hendrix's backing group and Noel Redding was selected on bass, while John 'Mitch' Mitchell became the drummer. In December the trio released their first single, 'Hey Joe,' followed by the truly dynamic 'Purple Haze' and an astonishing debut album. The rest, as they say, is history... To get an overview of Jimi's life and music, take a look at the GuitarSite Hendrix page. Also, search the All Music Guide for his detailed bio. The Official site is "Experience Hendrix Interactive". It includes details of Jimi's gear & effects set-up. More Hendrix sites & bio can be found at the Ultimate Band List. Hendrix helped create a unique sound by restringing right-handed guitars upside down to facilitate his left handedness. Douglas Noble examines this concept in his article "Lefty Matters". Fender has issued the Voodoo Stratocaster, made for right-handed guitarists, with a reverse headstock, reverse staggered pickups and reverse angled bridge pickups.
