The first things you'll look at when you're after a new instrument are the price and the features but there are a few other things to watch for. Look out for tremolo units which allow the strings to slip out of tune- this is common with some cheaper ones. Generally good guitars will also have the strings inclined at a nice angle on the headstock to prevent them slipping. If you're buying second hand watch for warped necks. Hold down the E string at the first fret and also at the 12th. | Make sure the string lies flat across the whole fingerboard. If there is a gap between the string and the neck it may be warped and not completely flat. Consider what kind of sound you are looking for and try to find a guitar with pick-ups and active controls that suit. Watch for single coil pick-ups which produce background hums.
