TUNING 2
Tuning your guitar using natural harmonics
by Fajar Siswandaru
You can use this technique both on Acoustic and Electric guitars, although it sounds meaner on electric with distortion.
The natural harmonics can be heard perfectly at the 5th, 7th, 9th, 12th, 16th, 19th fret on EVERY string on
the guitar. That doesn't mean trying this technique on the other frets won't work, it's just that only on those frets the sound produced comes out perfectly or completely ringed out.
Here's how to do it...
Description:
Touch the string(s) (don't fret it) precisely ABOVE the before mentioned frets, then pick the string(s). With a split second interval, release your finger from the fret and let the picked string(s) completely ring out.
Beware of:
Holding your finger too long, or the note that comes out from your guitar will be a "plunked" sound.
If you're not touching the strings at precisely ABOVE the frets, the note that comes out will not be completely ringed sound.
So what is it good for?
There are many things to do with natural harmonics, but here's an example...
Tuning Your Guitar With Natural Harmonics
Forget those electronic tuners and trust your ear, its so easy to do it with natural harmonics ..(Sounds like a commercial..:-)
Here's how...
First you must get either your low-e or high-e perfectly tuned.
Then sound the natural harmonics at these frets and match the notes that come out accordingly (5th on low E with 7th on A, 5th on A with 7th on D, 5th on D with 7th on G and 4th on D with the 5th on B and the 7th on E).
NOTATION :
!X = Sound the natural harmonics on the X fret.
E|---------|--------|--------|-------!7-|
B|---------|--------|--------|----!5----|
G|---------|--------|-----!7-|-!4-------|
D|---------|----!7--|--!5----|----------|
A|-----!7--|-!5-----|--------|----------|
E|--!5-----|--------|--------|----------|
Remember that the string used as the reference string (either low-e or high-e) has to be perfectly tuned first.
