    Clif,
This is Tommy Goldsmith. I grew up around Raleigh in the 60s and was friends with John Wheliss starting when we were in third grade together at Lacy. wonderful guy and guitarist.
Got reacquainted with John when I came back to Raleigh in 2003 after living in Nashville for more than 30 years. I came upon your name on a thread when I was looking for information about Jerry Davis, whom I got to know when he was working at Poole Music downtown.
I remember him and his playing very well, but have always been curious about something I once heard: that he played for a while with Gene Vincent. I think they were both from Virginia, but I haven’t found any Gene Vincent discography or other information that links them. Happen to know if that’s true?
BTW, I remember you from playing around town. I was also a denizen of the original Frog, during the days when Peter and Robin ran it and the kitchen/wait crew included Beetle Barbour, Rodney Marsh, me and a motley crew of others.
I’m reachable at [email protected] if you want to drop me a line. I work at the N&O and play around town in various settings, including bluegrass and roots-rock.
    all best,
    tg
