Mark’s Guitars

My site is dedicated in particular to left handed guitars.

I have acquired a handful of nice guitars over the years. Some are vintage and some are just cool little experiments of mine.

If you love guitars, or more specifically, love left handed guitars then please stop by.

Hey lefties! We rule!! Anyway, I want to learn to play guitar as a lefty. BIG QUESTION: Is it possible to learn to play left-handed on a right-handed guitar? That is, not restrung upside down or buying a left-handed guitar. I understand the key challenge is learning to strum upside-down. True? Any advice would be appreciated.

I’ve recieved some e mails and to answer. I wouldn’t insist on anyone playing upside down but the most important factors are a perfectly tuned guitar, very important, and a chord chart with an open mind. some chords you have to improvise, and play leads off of the chords, use your thumb over the top for a G cord and also for barring situations. Rythm is also very important, which to some people you just can’t teach. When I learned, we had TV with 2 channels and played at the ball field, that was the 60s and the reason you had to be creative for entertainment, not so now.

I’ve been doing it for 35 years and I can take any righty on, upside down! My older brother got a guitar in the 60s with a chord chart and knowledge of tuning I flipped it over and never stopped.Made a lot of money playing. I’ve got great leads on my junior (great guitar for flipping over) and solid strumming on acoustic. most chords are easy some are easier than proper. It’s mostly spirit and innovation that makes great guitarists, not cookie cutter lessons!

Well… I’ve played guitar left-handed on a righty guitar for 25 years. If you are just starting, bite the bullet and switch the strings around so that the bass is towards your head and the treble towards your toes. It will make for an easier time of it in the long run. If you are as obstinate as I was and insist on playing righty guitars, don’t worry about strumming in reverse – that would be ultimately very unsatisfying for you and, because of the mechanics of the whole thing, probably never sound that great. I have several guitars and all of them are strung for a righty. Lefty rule #1: don’t buy right-hand instuments, particularly electrics (the knobs are forever in the way, I don’t care what Jimi did!). The only exception to this rule is if you play strung righty and you want an acoustic – then you have to buy righty because the bridge is already cut that way; a lefty would have to be strung left, right? There are many good reasons to switch the strings to lefty. I play lap style dobro also and recently switched those strings to lefty and, after playing dobro for 20 years, am learning over again. There are some things that are not possible playing the other way. Email me if you want to discuss this further. Good luck. – Dave

that’s what I’m tryna do! Purely because I’m left handed and I have a right handed guitar that belonged to someone else and I refuse to play it right-handed.
