ADELE, I RECIEVED SOME INFO FROM MATON THEMSELVS A COUPLE OF YEARS BACK, THE ALVER IS NAMED AFTER BILL'S WIFE AND WAS MADE AS A AFFORDABLE GUITAR(HENCE THE PLY TOP AND CHEAP M/HEADS)THERE ARE NO OTHER SIGNS OR MARKS VIEWABLE ON THE GUITAR EXCEPT FOR THE LABEL IN THE TOP F HOLE FROM MEMORY.THE ARE WORTH ABOUT $450 AUSSIE IN REAL GOOD NIC BUT I'M YET TO SEE ONE THAT I WOULD PAY THAT MUCH FOR. I HAVE PROBABLY SEN AND HEARD OF ABOUT 8 OR 9 FOR SALE ACROSS THE COUNTRY IN THE LAST 18 MONTHS ALONE AND ALL HAVE BEEN BETWEEN THE 200-350 MARK. MOST OF THESE GUITARS ARE HARD TO TUNE AND PLAY AS THEY ARE A CHEAP GUITAR NEVER THE LESS, THE LOOK GREAT AND ARE PART OF AUSTRALIA MUSICAL HISTORY AND MADE BY AN AUSTRALIAN COMPNY WHICH HAS GONE ON TO MAKE SOME OF THE WORLDS BEST QUALITY INSTRUMENTS.I HAD AN EARLY 60'S ONE THAT WAS GREAT FOR PLAYING ACOUSTIC SLIDE BECAUSE OF THE HIGH ACTION.I SOLD THIS GUITAR A YEAR OR SO AGO FOR $190 WITH NO PROBLEM.SO ENJOY YOUR MATON ALVER AND DON'T PUT TO HEAVIER GAUGE STRINGS ON HER.

Re: alver?

Incidentally, Bill May's wife is called Vera, and is a lovely lady! Saw her last week. I'll ask her about the Alver.

Re: alver?

You alver guitar is a useless old dog smash it and then burn it!!

Alver?

You can be lucky. I am blessed with the most amazingly rich sound from my Cherry Red Alver archtop. While a valuation for dollars is interesting, I don't think it would be easy to buy the fun and sounds I get from my little red guitar. I recently attached a double humbucking Kent Armstrong pick-up to the scratch plate and now have the richest sounding jazz guitar. I love my Alver.

Alver

Still miss my Alver.........play it in my dreams.

Re: alver?

I just bought myself a 1962 alver F-hole apparently they are fairly hard to come by this one is in really good condition for it's age & set me back only $400 which in my opinion is sbout 1/2 what it would be worth

Re: alver?

i think alver were a cheaper line made by maton and named after bill may's wife. i think production ceased mid 60's and usually (but don't quote me) aren't worth as much as maton models from the same period, but are still nice guitars.is it an arch or flat top?

Re: alver?

I picked up an old 2 tone black/burgundy Maton Alver f hole at a garage sale in Brisbane last year with parts broken or missing. I believe it is a cheap model made in the 1960s but it is a dandy looking guitar and I am keen to restore it. Anyone know what they are worth and where I can get replacement parts??

Re: alver?

Did you find out anything about your Alver? I have an old maton which I thought at first was an alver but now I'm not so sure. It doesn't have any words on the headstock. Did anyone five you a value. I'd be interested to know.
cheers

It sounds like the same as

It sounds like the same as guitar someone posted pics of on another group I am a member of.
You should find a number like "B-208" , written on that "Made by MATON" label. Whatever number is on yours, it should tell you the, batch number (that's what the B stands for) ..
The one posted on other group, has no label on headstock but everyone seems to be sure it is a variant of Alver.
