I have a 4 string black fretless bass with a rich mahogany neck in excellent conditon. It is either a 1998 or 1999, I can’t remember, but I know they are no longer made. I was wondering if anyone has any idea of it’s value.

I just got one off of EBay that had been converted to fretless (filled fret slots) for $100.00. It still needs a little work, but plays very nicely with flatwound strings installed. Nice jazz tone.

: I have a epiphone semi hollow electric bass in which I am not sure of the year or value. It has a kalamazoo tag on the inside which reads style : 5120 and No. 00675. On the back of the bolt on plate has a made in japan followed by the numbers 0069855. Its in good condition. neck is still true. elecric still works. minor blemishes on body. Thanks Adam

This is one of the rare (seriously) Epiphone 5120 Basses, sometimes referred to with EA-260, the model number. The serial number puts it at around 1964. I have one just like it. 🙂

        Tom Hainey

Does anyone know anything about his bass? I bought it second hand in 1980. Cherry red, blue label inside body. Style number 5120B Serial Number 011427. There is a differen serial number on the plate at the base of the neck 01146699.
Still plays. Missing the finger plate of the front and one of the control knobs. Is this rare? I thought with it being the Japanese made version it was not especially rare. Any info gratefully received.

Alvarez Tree of Life Model 5056 Serial 7009 Purchased in late 1970

I purchased my Alvarez in the 70’s from Runzo’s Music World in Dublin, CA. I was taking lessons, it was on display, and I fell in love with it – they let me put it on layaway until I could pay it off. I do not recall exactly how much it cost, but think it was around $400-$500 (?). I was told it was a limited edition, the fingerboard and bridge are ebony wood (that would last like iron), and the guitar is inlaid with abalone. The sound board is spruce, Brazilian rose wood sides and the back (I think) is Mahogany. The wood grains are beautiful. I was told its sound would improve with age, that the spruce would darken, and it all has. The only alteration was adding a pickup button, which is not noticeable.

I played non-professionally for years, but stopped about 8-10 years ago – took it out two days ago as my wife wants we to start playing again – the strings were dead but it was hardly out of tune – took it to the Main Street Music store in Placerville, CA and the owner admired it and was amazed that the tension bar needed no adjustment after being in the case for so long.

I am not sure what its value is, but the memories are priceless.

I have my mother’s Alvarez tree of life guitar after she passed away in December. It has the original hard case. I have photos if you need one.

          Baumli

You’ve got a wonderful guitar there. The back should be Brazilian rosewood too, not mahogany. I’ve never seen one with a mahogany back, and could tell if you sent a picture of it. Also, do you have the original case? I would like to get an original case for mine, but can’t really shop without knowing what the case looked like. If you could send a picture of that too, I would appreciate it.

Thanking you from Saint Louis, I am:

: : Does anyone have information about this model? Solid top, laminate etc?

: I have this Alarez do you have a question about it? I bought mine in 1976, and it was called the Tree of Life. I am not sure what information you are seeking but if I can help you, unless you already had help, you can contact me.

I ALSO HAVE A 5056 THAT I BOUGHT IN 1974. AS STAN SAYS, IT WAS JUST CALLED THE "TREE OF LIFE", AND I THOUGHT THAT WAS THE MODEL AND THE LOGO ‘TREE OF LIFE’ MEANT STRICTLY THAT GUITAR. NOW I’M FINDING THE IT IS ONLY A REFERENCE TO THE DESIGN ON THE FRET BOARD. ALVAREZ HAVE SEVERAL MODELS THAT THEY CALL THE TREE OF LIFE, AND IN FACT THEY EVEN HAVE A MANDOLIN AND A BANJO CALLED THAT TOO.
THIS IS WHAT I RECALL THE SALESMAN TELLING ME AT THE MUSIC STORE I PURCHASED IT FROM, BUT DON’T TAKE THIS AS ‘GOSPEL’ BECAUSE IT WAS MANY YEARS AGO.
THE TOP IS 2 PC. SITKA SPRUCE, FRET BOARD AND SIDES ARE ROSEWOOD AND THE BACK IS MAHOGANY (2 PC I THINK)
THE GUITAR IS VERY ORNATE AND I RECEIVE COMPLIMENTS ON IT OFTEN.(NOT ABOUT MY MUSIC THOUGH)
I BELIEVE I PAID ALMOST $500.00 FOR IT, LIKE $489.00 PLUS TAX.
OTHER THAN THAT, I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THEM AND HAVE ALWAYS WONDERED WHERE OR WHY THEY NAMED IT "THE TREE OF LIFE" OR RATHER THAT ‘PATTERN’. IF ANYONE HAS AN IDEA OF IT’S MARKETABLE VALUE, I WOULD APPRECIATE THE INFO.
OH, BTW, THE GUITAR WAS MADE IN JAPAN

I have a bass that my Uncle played in a band with in the 70’s so it could be a 60’s or 70’s model. It is a Focus 77 by Kramer. On the back at the base of the neck is a stainless steel plate with the numbers 000629 under the inscription "Kramer". I’m pretty sure all the accessories are original (except the strings) and I am still playing this bass. Sound like a keeper? Thanks…

      Bill Hassley

      Hello…
I’m trying to figure out the value of two guitars that belong to an old friend. I know both are in "real good" to excellent condition.

The first is a Gibson ES335 TD, serial number 677129. It is a brown wood tone with upper and lower sound holes on the face. It plays very well.

The second is a Gibson Firebird, the serial number is very difficult to read, it is either 005763, 095763, or 635763. It has the firebird image below the neck at the top of the body and also plays very well.

These guitars have been stored in a cool dry environment for the last 20 to 30 years. My old friend wants to try to determine their values.

      Can you help?
I told her the Gibby ES335TD was probly worth $30.00 because I’s really liket to have it, (Just kiding!)
