keep breaking the high E
Hello!!!
I got a gibson lespaul standard, and the high E string
breaks all the time. I have tried everything from polish
the saddle to using thinner pics, and softer attacs, but
it still breaks very easily. Does anybody have the same
experience, and maybe come up with some ideas, i would
love to hear about them.

Re: keep breaking the high E
how long u been playing for? cause i did that lots when i first started. but if not that, it might be a sharp fret or saddle or nut, depending on where it breaks. take it to a proper guitar guy and tell em 'sup and they'll be able to file down the rough bits wherever they are.
Re: keep breaking the high E
Hmm.Maybe your strings are too light. When I use a set of 009's,I use a 010. as my high E. Ernie Ball makes a set of HYBRID SLINKY strings. This could help.

Try raising the stopbar tailpiece a little on the treble side ( but keep your bridge at the same height),
this will reduce the tension and may cure/help or even solve your problem.
I used to be a tailpiece screwed all the way down to the guitar guy, but have gone to having the
tailpiece raised enough to clear the back of my bridge. There are folks who say you loose sustain
when you raise the bridge, I haven't noticed that much change but I've only raised the thng about
a 1/4 inch....

amp for ef508c takamine
Can someone reccomend an acoustic amp for the ef508c takamine guitar? I want something that really gives the guitar a great sound.Looking to spend about 250.00.
Thanks!
Re: amp for ef508c takamine
I am not sure if you can find a good acoustic amp for $250, but, I would highly recommend the Fender Acoustasonic Jr. combo. It costs around $450 but it would be well worth the extra money.

SAMPLE GUITAR TIPS E-MAIL
-------------------------
TODAY'S TIP: WHILE YOUR TELE GENTLY WEEPS
If you play a Fender Telecaster, try this technique to achieve a crying, wah-like effect. Stretch the little finger of your picking hand to the tone knob and turn the treble to its most bass position. Strike a note, or better yet, release a bent string to where it's
dropping in pitch. While the note drops, increase the amount of treble with your little finger. It will sound voice-like and give the note a crying sound. This is an effect that guitarist Roy Buchanan pioneered, even though steel guitarists had been doing it years before his innovation.
Your little finger may not seem long enough to move the tone knob at first, but once you grow accustomed to the stretch, you'll have no problems. Some Tele players reverse their switchplate to bring the
volume and tone knobs closer to their picking hand. This works for many, but I don't like the trade-off of having the toggle switch further away from my picking hand. I firmly believe Leo Fender got the Telecaster design right the first time. To hear Roy Buchanan use this crying effect, check out "The Messiah Will Come Again" from his self-titled recording on Mercury.

free guitar lessons
Where can I get free guitar lessons online that are on video
Re: free guitar lessons
Probably no where. You might find a couple of sites that give you a couple of minutes of one lesson free (usually called a sample).
If tab with audio will do you can find lots of free lessons at www.wholenote.com. I would also suggest going to a search engine like
www.yahoo.com and searching for "guitar lessons"

Contact Mesa Boogie direct - phone or email, have a look at their website - and they'll let you know who your nearest dealer is. They might even sell to you direct - I don't know. Don't know about Marshall pedals, I'm afraid, but I would reccomend those by Tube Works, a range of three valve-driven overdrive pedals.
closed back speaker cab
I was reading the top ten amps and does a marshall need one of these to play distortion? What does it do? I saw people play JCM 900's with just the amp and the pedal and it sounded fine. So how much does a closed back speak cab cost anyway, and is it essential?
thx,
red
Re: closed back speaker cab
I'm not sure I understand exactly what the question is. Are you asking what a closed back cabinet is, or do you have to have a closed back cabinet to use distortion? A closed back cabinet is simply a speaker cabinet that has a closed back, unlike open-back cabinets. These cabinets have much more of a low-end than open back cabs. As far as distortion, that is created in the amp itself, the cabinets have nothing to do with that. The closed back cabinets will make the distorted guitar tone a little thicker and beefier, but that is about it. A Marshall closed back cabinet costs around $900.

serial numbers
With all the fakes out there. Dose anyone know where I can look up the serial numbers on my gutair to make sure that it is really a fender strat made in USA and not a fake that someone just stuck a decal and a few parts on a mex copy ? pleas HELP
Re: serial numbers
Strats are tricky cause most of their early axes used
decals for I.D. Underneith the neck(bolts)there should be some numbers telling you what year it was made.
You'd have to take off the neck to do this.I think there are numbers inside the pickup cavity, on the body. But 79's and 80's are very heavy,"TRUCKS".
Good Luck
Re: serial numbers
There's a book on guitar identification and serial numbers. You can find it here http://www.guitarspot.com/1300416.htm
Good luck.

Tuning a Floyd Rose style guitar
Hi,
I just received an RG220 as a birthday gift. It is my first electric guitar, let alone one with a Floyd Rose locking system. I have no idea how to tune it and the manual is useless. Please help. I do know this, when changing the strings, in the RG220 I don't have to slice the balls off their ends. Thank you very much.

I'm glad you're not going to be chopping the balls off anything. I imagine someone else will post you a more useful reply - as I haven't owned a guitar with a locking trem - but I'll give it a go. Part of the difficulty is that the trem is balanced with springs, so that when you tighten one string the others all go out of tune slightly as the springs adjust. This means you have to go over hem repeatedly until they all come to the right pitch and stay there. I guess also you will need to release the locking part to allow the strings to adjust as you retune, and lock it again when you're done. If you have problems, though, take it along to the shop where it was bought and ask them to go through it with you. So long as you don't pick a moment when they're rushed off their feet they'll be haoppy to help you, as you're potentially going to spend a load more money with them if you keep up your new interest.
Re: Tuning a Floyd Rose style guitar
Hi. I was drawn to this topic about tuning with floyd rose, wondering if there is any way i can set up my peavey with floyd rose system on it so i can easily tune it to drop d without knocking all the other strings out of tune. I'm playing with it live soon as my gibson (which is no problem to detune) is getting fixed. usually i drop 'd' down to C# on my gibson and tune up again for a song in Eb with no problems with the other strings going out but my peavey is a pain in the arse to try and do this with as all of the other strings go out of tune. Much gratitude if u can help!!
Re: Tuning a Floyd Rose style guitar
Tuning these guitars can be pretty frustrating. I have owned several guitars with Floyds. Keep in mind that when you tune one string, the others are going to go out of tune. I always tuned to about a half step lower than standard to allow the strings to adjust to the tension. Then tune them almost to pitch, then tighten the nut, this will raise the pitch slightly, then tune to pitch using the fine tuners at the bridge. Sometimes you may need to loosen the nut and start over again, but after you get the hang of it, it's a piece of cake.

G&L bass
i have a G&L interceptor bass. a friend took a look at it and said because it has Leo Fender signature on the head it was worth alot more....any truth? he went on to say that around 1990, fender sued Leo for using his signature in the G & L logo...give me the facts somebody! thanks
Re: G&L bass
First, I'm sure that the bass isn't worth any more than it would be without the signature. No, Fender did not sue Leo because of his signature, G&L is sort of a branch of Fender. Leo and his friend George Fullerton, (G&L), started building guitars under the G&L name in 1979. Leo died in 1991, so what would be the point in sueing him at such an old age over a signature on a guitar he created.
who knows?
tried once and twice need info in kew west nobody knows read other ad. thanks ken
What's a Pro-Tone?
I recently purchased a used Squier Pro-Tone Telecaster. When were these made and how are they different from a regular Squier?
Re: What's a Pro-Tone?
I believe it is just a standard Squier but with some upgraded pickups, (I think). I am not sure when they were made. I would imagine sometime within the past few years.
Hammer Slammer
I am thinking about buying a new Hammer Slammer 800 dollar electric guitar...um...does anyone have a Hammer Slammer electric? This is my first one, and I have no idea if they're any good. If you play one, what type of music do you play?

As with any other guitar, you play what you want to on it! Hamer's are supposed to be good guitars. I've never owned one but all the magazine reviews I've ever seen have lavished praise. Play some others as well. If this one feels right then it's the one for you. And don't let anyone tell you that you have to play a certain type of music becuase you bought a certain type of guitar. Down that road lies mundanity and the death of creativity.
Re: Hammer Slammer
I have never owned a Hamer guitar, but I have played them and they are fine guitars. Excellent quality and workmanship. They sound good to. As for what style. It really doesn't matter, you buy the guitar that feels good to you and you play whatever style you want with it. Hamer's sound great with most any style.

howdy homies
does anyone gots any suggestions for a good amp i should get? I'm looking for a versitle amp. I want a reeeeeeeeeallllly sexay dist sound, but i also want a good clean channel. I'm told the nomad has these, but i'm willing to look round. anyone know about laney or anything else round the 2000(australian) mark? I think thats about 1000 u.s.
thanks fellas.
Re: i want everybody who's worth it's input
Distortion, etc? - then you've probably after a Marshall JCM 800 - these have plenty of lively distortion with a good clean sound aswell - or if money is no option, a Messa Boogie (for rectified Metalica stuff).
I personally own and Fender Blues delux and our bands guitarist has a Fender Twin - these are fantastic - though distortion comes with help from a Boss pedal.
Don't buy anything transistor based, valves are much, much better - however check out some of the Line 6 physical modelling combos - especially if you also want to play at home with headphones or DI record - I have a pod - it aint bad at all and is a great education in amp combos - so borrowing one it might help you choose the real thing.

Got to be a valve amp. Check out Mesa Boogie or Fender. Marshall, too, though they don't do it for me. Don't be afraid to get second-hand stuff. These things last really well, and you'll be able to afford a far better amp second-hand than you could get new. A valve distortion pedal into an old single channel valve amp is wonderful, but you can get similar sounds with more recent valve gear. Be very wary of transistor amps if a good distortion sound is important to you - they generally tend to be quite harsh. (Of course I risk opening a huge can of worms here - they'll all come out of the woodwork saying they've owned a transistor amp that sounded far better than anything ever made with valves in.) Try them out, listen carefully, don't make a rush decision, and go with what feels right to you.
Alright Now?
Could somebody puh-leeze give me the correct chord changes to Alright Now by Free. For the life of me, I can't get it right. I read an interview by Paul Stanley of Kiss that Paul Kossoff overdubbed guitars to create those changes, but after hearing Paul Rodgers backup group pull it off live (with Howard Leese of Heart as guitarist), I know that you only need one guitar to play it CORRECTLY. HELLLLPPPPP!!!
Thanks -
Lance
never played it...
...but i've heard it on the radio. sounds like this:
for the verse:
A D/A A D/A D/A A
where
A = x0222x
D/A = x0423x
and the refrain is probably
(A)All right (G)now. Baby, it's
(D)All right (A)
(these sound like standard bar chords)
It sounds like a les paul through a twin reverb. But as I say, I've never actually tried to play this song, so I could be wrong about all this.

and play it like like that, sounds stupid I know
but the more you forget about imitating and just get creative, you usually come up with even cooler
variations of things.
