Re: Alright Now?

: Could somebody puh-leeze give me the correct chord changes to Alright Now by Free. For the life of me, I can't get it right. I read an interview by Paul Stanley of Kiss that Paul Kossoff overdubbed guitars to create those changes, but after hearing Paul Rodgers backup group pull it off live (with Howard Leese of Heart as guitarist), I know that you only need one guitar to play it CORRECTLY. HELLLLPPPPP!!!

: Thanks -

Have a look around and I'm sure you'll find some footage that you can get an idea from. The film I've seen of them lpaying it Paul was playing a Les Paul through an Orange stack, if I remember correctly. Can't remember the chords without a guitar in my hands but I think you'll find Robb's about right with his answer. I'd also support Ratbox's point as well, though - the experimenting and trying to get it is all part of hte learnign process and will bring you your own things along the way. I know that's not much comfort when you're tearing your hair out trying to work it out, but it is worth remembering.

DO YOU KNOW EXACT FRET LENGTHS??

IF YOU CAN SEND ME SOME MEASUREMENTS OF HOW LONG FRETS
OR FRET PLACEMENT PLEASE SEND IT.

Re: DO YOU KNOW EXACT FRET LENGTHS??

: IF YOU CAN SEND ME SOME MEASUREMENTS OF HOW LONG FRETS

Are you speaking of scale lengths?
When I built my guitar I just copied from another guitar for placement,(standerd)worked out fine.
Now if you find any other scale lengths other than standered please let me know?
I've read of Steve Via useing a seventeen fret
scale length but can't fint it any where?

Re: DO YOU KNOW EXACT FRET LENGTHS??

Scale length is the distance from the nut to the bridge, effectively the length of the string. A longer scale, such as the Fender standard, which is 25.5" must be tensioned higher to get the same notes. An "E" is still an "E" on different scales(with the exception of half-sized guitars) . Gibson usually uses a 24.75" scale, which means the strings have less tension, and are easier to bend. The downside of longer scales is that some reaches are hard in the lower frets. Shorter scales tend to get cramped on the higher frets.
As for there being a 17-fret scale, that pretty much doesn't make sense. Go further down the forum and I posted the stuff for figuring out fret size for different lengths.
I hope this helps you some too, gerald. Go and get that FAQ, it has many scale lengths already figured for all the fret lengths.

Re: DO YOU KNOW EXACT FRET LENGTHS??

I said that "An "E" is still an "E" on different scales(with the exception of
half-sized guitars)" what I meant was that they're the same E. Half sized guitars are usually tuned to A or something. Their E is also still an E, but not the same octave. Okay.

guitar heel

What exactly is the heel, and the cutaways of the guitar?

Re: guitar heel

: What exactly is the heel, and the cutaways of the guitar?
The heel is the portion of the neck that joins to the guitar body.
The cutaway is the access provided to the higher frets by building the guitar with an area "cut away" from the body. A les paul has 1 cutaway. An ES-335 has a double cutaway, one on each side of the neck.

Need Your Help Before I Buy My First Strat

Just found this forum today and have enjoyed reading
through the feedback. I need your help and expertise.
I want to buy my first Strat as I've been saving for a
number of years (the last electric I bought was in the
early 70's, so I plan to keep my Strat forever). What
should I look for? What do you recommend? (I have
big hands). I understand it should preferably be
pre-1986 (USA made) for the highest quality. The sound
I like is Hendrix, SR Vaughn, etc. What can you steer
me towards? What should I avoid? My budget is in the
$500-$1,000 range. Thanks in advance.

Re: Need Your Help Before I Buy My First Strat

Hi,

I would say go for a new one aspecially if you will keep it forever. When you buy second hand you can resell it something like the same price that's the only advantage. Buying a new one gives you a lot more choice and they are good. I would buy an American Standars (they are not to expensive since there is a new serie the American series) They are good guitars and you can always change the pups later if you are not content. I've got two myself one totally standard and one with Texas Special pick ups. I think the biggest buulshit I've even heard is that they were better before '86. I think it's the other way around 70-ties Fenders mostly suck (had two) and after '86 they were bach with logical lines and constant quality. Some 70-ties are great but the lot is crap, from '86 they are at least all okay.
Hope I helped you a litle.

Yvette

Re: Need Your Help Before I Buy My First Strat

I would recommend a new American Strat. The American Series replaced the American Standard series just this year, so either one would be fine. I own two American Standard Strats, one is a '99 Hardtail and the other a 40th Anniversary Strat. The Standards are the best Strats, in my opinion, because when you start changing pickups and stuff like that, you change the original "Strat" tone. Also, the Standards hold their value better than the other modified versions. As far as a pre-'86, if you want original Fender quality you would have to buy a pre-'65. CBS bought Fender in 1965 and the concern became quantity over quality. I would stay away from the CBS years Fenders, ('65-'84). But really anything after that is fine. Fender regained control of its operations at that time and the quality returned. But I would opt for a new Strat because they just keep getting better. And, you can easily buy an American Standard Strat with your given price range,(and even have some money left over to buy some more gear with!)Anyway, I hope this helps, good luck.

I wouldn't disagree with any of teh above answer, but would point out that Hendrix - who you've mentioned an interest in - only ever played post-65 Strats. The preference for pre-CBS Strats arose later, and he wasn't part of it. Post-CBS Strats has quite large headstocks - huge compared to earlier models - and are therefore quite distinctive. I don't think I've ever seen photos or footage of Hendrix playing a smaller-headstocked Strat. Make of that what you will.

Hello. I also have have big hands. The most comfortable Fender neck I've found is the SRV series.

Also look at the strat plus series with the LSR roller nut. That also had a nice neck if I remember correctly.

Personally the neck is the most important part. You can always change the pickups to suit your taste.

After playing hundreds of guitars I've settled on Ibanez. Easiest playing neck for my fingers.

Anyway, good luck and Happy Holidays.

Re: Need Your Help Before I Buy My First Strat

: Hello. I also have have big hands. The most comfortable Fender neck I've found is the SRV series.

I'm going to second the SRV for very comfortable to big hands. I tend to prefer Gibson necks as they've always just "fit" better. The SRV strat is more than $1000, though. Maybe you should buy warmoth parts and built a strat to your specs (they'll finish them for extra $ if you're not a do-it-yourself-er) you could pick the wood for body, neck and fingerboard, etc., and get pickups you want like kinmans or fralins or lawrences. That way you could get a strat with a big comfy neck if you wanted, and probably spend within your price range. I had a guitar teacher who got a Warmoth body that looked (and sounded) really good (he just finished with tung oil, I think) I don't know if the finishes they do are really great or not. Anyway, I would give it a look if I were you (www.warmoth.com). You couls get a nice chambered, quilted maple topped strat with a neck of your choice (about 13 choices I think) an ebony fretboard, etc., all you'd have to do is put it together, which is the easy part. I personally think that a lot of new fenders are overpriced (as are most guitars), and I think assembling your own would be cheaper, and more gratifying (I built one guitar, and although it's not the best one I own at all, I'm still really proud). Do what you want though, that's just my 2 cents.

installing pick ups

I have a humbucker and want to put it in my guitar, but I don't know where all the wires go into the pick-up.
please help

Re: installing pick ups

This is a tricky question cause different pickups have
different schemes.Seymore Humb.Green=Hot,Dimarz.Red=Hot
Lawrence Black=Hot.In most cases black wires are ground
wires.Solder this to the tone pot.Try touching the others to the pickup select switch.Use a screw driver
for testing(tap it on p.u.).The if there is buzzing, then pickup is in single coil mode. It's really trial and error,if there's no guide sheet with pickup.

Using a pedal with acoustic/electric

G'day ... I have a Tak acoustic/electric with a Peavy bass amp. Most of the music we play is blues, but we're trying a bit of jazz. Is there a pedal I could use that would simulate the soft-tone one would get from a hollow-bodied electric? Thanks!

Re: Using a pedal with acoustic/electric

What kind of pickup do you have ? If you have a magnetic pickup in the soundhole then take a look at the Boss Blues Driver, this pedal is amazing. It will give you all of the tones you are looking for. If you have a regular piezo pickup, there is not much you can do. If you want a good jazz tone then look into replacing your piezo with a magnetic pickup.

Re: Using a pedal with acoustic/electric

Thanks very much, Phil ... the p/u is magnetic, so I'll have a go at th Boss Blues Driver.

Don't use pedals much myself, but I do seem to recall noticing a pedal in a shop a while ago which was supposed to give an acoustic guitar sound when you play an electric guitar through it. Don't see why it shouldn't work for bass. I think it was made by Boss, but it might have been DOD. Check out their websites, or a dealer or something. Sorry I can't remember any more than that, but if it works for bass, the thing you're after is out there.

Fernandes guitars

I was thinking of buying one, but want to find out as much as I can from anyone who has experience with them.

Thanks.

Re: Fernandes guitars

I have a fernandes 5-string bass. It is very solid and you can get great tones out of it. I have played several of their guitars and have been quite impressed. The pickups might be the only thing you may need to replace to beef up the sound,

Re: Fernandes guitars

My brother uses them, but there are a few levels of quality, as with other knock offs. Watch for a better neck finish. There are Japanese models, korean too. It's always possible to find a good guitar among the imports, you just gotta look a little harder

Re: Fernandes guitars

I've played on my friends older Fernandez Strat. They're
almost as good as the real thing! Most Fernandez stuff
is very good.
