Selling

Is there anywhere I can obtain information on approximate starting price for a guitar I would like to sell?
I'm thinking of selling/trading my Ovation 1984-5 Collector's Edition and I don't want to get ripped off or rip anyone else off.

The only place you'll get a real idea is in ads for similar items. The value of the guitar is always what sonmeone will actually pay for it, so any guide to value is of questionable reliability if you own a fairly rare item. I've had a couple of things over the years that are theoretically quite valuiable, but then you advertise them and discover no-one's actually interested - or no-one close enough to where you live anyway. Have a look at similar ads and pick a number. See what happens.

Fender,Squire

My 15 year old dautghter just asked gfor a Squire Gutiar. Is this one any good and if so how much should it cost ?????????????

Re: Fender,Squire

If you live in the uk go to the flying pig, they will sell you a squire, plus amp & case, strings for less than a £100, they do have a web page, if you can't find it email me.

Re: Fender,Squire

Does she really want to play the guitar? If she does then don't buy a Squire! They are cheap in quality and won't last very long. Consider buying her a Mexican Fender Strat. It's a great guitar to learn on because it is a strong, well-made guitar for a beginner. Those will cost about $300. For a starter guitar, you just can't beat it. I hope this helps. Good Luck!

Re: Fender,Squire

I totally agree, an alterative is the yamaha pacifica at £135 its a wicked first time buy

help: fender amps, boss pedals

Im thinking about buying an amp and am interested in all tube power. i was lookin at the fender hot rod deluxe. Does it have a headphone out? i also noticed the volume is REALLY sensative. i was comparing that to a marshall vs65R, or maybe a jcm 2000 dsl401 (kinda expensive tho). i realize the vs65R only has a preamp tube:will this be incredibly noticable? also i was thinkin on buyin a boss sd-1 vs. that boss overdrive an distortion in one. and also the ibanez ds-7 vs. the smashbox. need some advice!!

Re: help: fender amps, boss pedals

BUY THE FENDER!!! I have a Hot Rod Deluxe and it is the best amp I have ever owned (I've owned a few). The volume is sensitive but that is a good thing. It doesn't need to be turned up loud to get a good tone. No, it doesn't have a headphone out. I also use the Boss DS-1 among a handful of other Boss pedals and it sounds great. I would also recommend the Boss Blues Drver. They both sound excellent. The amp and pedals are a great match. I hope this helps, Good Luck.

Re: help: fender amps, boss pedals

Hmm.I'm not really a Marshall man, myself.I use the Fender Twin Reverbs.Boxes??I would stay away from the Boss's.They don't sound that good to me.I like my Smash box, lots of dirt,built-in noise gate, good tone control.I'll use a Tube-screamer as a preamp and to warm up the tone. The Boss BF-2 flanger is...WILD! The delays, choruses and phasors are also what Boss does well.Don't like they're distortions.
Good Luck.
P.S.Check out the Jackhammer,MEAN!

Re: help: fender amps, boss pedals

in the original question, this person asked if u'd notice the difference between a solid state power amp with pre amp tubes to an all tube deal. does anyone know? and what's the difference like, tonally. also, is it the same kinda deal with a solid pre and a tube power amp?

thanks, hope someone can help

humbucker in a strat copy

i have a ibanez GIO start copy i got in a starter pack. the actual guitar is $200. it is single coil, single coil, humbucker. i was thinkin about replacin the humbucker with a better one. first of all is this worth it? and if so what kind should i use. im after a gibson sound which is pretty stupid since im usin a $200 start copy but nonetheless. i need advice!!!

Re: humbucker in a strat copy

Seymore Duncans are very good humbuckers.I also like the D'marzio PAF pro(Satriani). Both pickups sound good
when cranked and you won't lose tone.

vintage parts

can anyone recomend a web site with vintage or remanufactured guitar parts.
I have an old hollow body electric shell w/ S cutouts and need all the hardware.
(pickups, tunners, bridge, pic gaurd, nuts, etc.) the sites ive seen so far
only deal with solid body types. thanks, Dave.

Re: vintage parts

Hi Dave. You should re-list your needs in a more specific request. There are plenty of parts dealers, but the brand of parts is important. Try the Vintage Guitar Magazine ads. Often there are parts for sale in their classified advertizements by private sellers.
E-bay is the most diverse and probably your best bet, but remember, parts don't magically fit on any guitar body, so choose wisely because you may not be allowed the luxury of a return. Erno

led zeppelin tone

my setup isnt good-ibanez GIO-zoom 707-ibanez crap amp, but im buyin new equipment-maybe a fender hot rod deluxe and a sd-1 by boss. anyway how would i get close to a zeppelin tone like moby dick, comm. breakdown kinda thing. thanx

Re: led zeppelin tone

Stay away from the Boss SD-1! Crapola!! Try to get an
Ibanez TS-10 or TS-9.Also get a Cry-baby and leave it
pressed down(Forward).

Re: led zeppelin tone

The pedals below should get you the sound, I know it sounds stupid but get a video of page playings ie song remains the same, a great deal of his tone does come from the way he plays, he is very flat fingered & previos notes run in to existing notes a typical example is the simple to play black dog. I love playing Zep stuff, with breakdown it's almost impossible to play if you use a squeky clean style. Hey perhaps you already play like this, but I thought I'd let you know, as it took me a great deal of time to learn his style.

Re: led zeppelin tone

Midrange! Your Gio should have tons, and I liked the 'wah-wah on' suggestion. Have a play around with small tube amps and see what you might find- wind the bass off 'till about 9 o'clock, treb on 12 o'clock, mid and master vol. cranked, with a little bit off fizz on the preamp vol. A 15-20 watt tube amp should give a pretty good impersonation, like a pro junior or classic 20. It would be an ideal step up from that Ibanez practise amp!

"Rickenbaucher?" guitar amp

there is someone who wants to get rid of a rickenbaucher (unsure of the proper spelling, sorry) amp and i want to know if that is a quality line, and the value of this particular amp. It is an amp, with speaker and head in the same box, and has a 10 inch speaker. don't know of the watts or any other necessary specs but can someone ballpark it for me?????

Satin or Gloss finish?

I was wondering what the differences b/w a satin finish and a gloss finish, besides the look. I figure the gloss is more durable, but is the satin really that bad? Is there any difference in sound? thanks.

Re: Satin or Gloss finish?

yes gloss is more durable & hardwaring but it shows all the dents & scratches that guitars pick up & then it looks shit, where as a fuck up satin guitar looks more authentic when battered.

which pedal should i buy?

i going start a pedal collection and im wondering what to start of with ! im looking for something which will give sustain when in solos but is also good for a full sound when playing chords. and i would like it to be boss. thanks

Re: which pedal should i buy?

The TS-9 is good for rock rythym. When recording rock rythyms I use a Chandler Tubedriver(rack). The Boss DM-2
or DM-3 analoge delay,MXR Flanger,Boss BF-2,Maxon chorus,of course a Cry-baby.
Good Luck

Re: which pedal should i buy?

all great pedals, I like the ts-9 but everyone has one, I prefer a Marshall bluebreaker, but you should go for a marshall jackhammer as you get a nive overdrive as well as distortion channel, plus a danelectro, chorus pedal would be a nice addition to the list below, also a great way to get a wider sound when playing lead is use a stereo pitch shifter, an shift the left down by just 10% & the right up by 10% I gives a chorus thicking effect without the warbling effect. but if you get nothing else buy a crybaby it's as esstential as strings themselves

Re: which pedal should i buy?Hey Phil ! !

Don't know much about the Bluesbreaker.I've been playing for 22yrs.This forum is about people voicing their opinions, but you seem like you've got alot to prove.Especially to me!Hey dude, relax!Meglomania is most unattractive.I can tell by your tone, there's definatly a jealousy issue going on here.I know what I know through experience. And if I don't know,I admit it!
In case you haven't noticed, you are making enemies with
your attitude!

effects pedals

As I heard one person say, strings are very important.
But another thing is the pick-up you are using. try using a hot Pick-up like a Dimarzio Tone Zone, Fred or P.A.F. All three have a sound like a wah, that is wide open. after that use a DS-1(boss super overdrive) & a chorus pedal CH-1(boss super chorus). Set The DS-1 (drive 2/3, tone 1/2 ,level as loud as You want. Set the CH-1(E,level 2/3,EQ 2/3, rate at min,and depth at max). Marshall or Fender Tube amps. Have fun.

Re: which pedal should i buy?

If you want a Boss pedal, I would suggest either the Blues Driver or the DS-1 Distortion. On the DS-1 you would have to set the tone knob a little left of center to get a good full tone. If you want alot of sustain and distortion for a good lead tone try the Electro-Harmonix Big Muff. It is a great pedal too. Good luck.

Vai / Malmsteen duet...

I was browsing Napster (shhhh...) for Steve Vai MP3s and I saw one that called Duet by Vai and Malmsteen. I heard it (or rather the first two minutes...it was incomplete). My guess is, Steve was first to go and when the drums kick in Yngwie takes over. No info of such a recording exists on Vai's site. Do any of you guys know anything about this? I also heard a rumour that Vai gave neoclassical a shot with his rendition of Malmsteen's Black Star.

Re: Vai / Malmsteen duet...

WOW !! I gotta find this !! If I do I'll post it.

Re: Vai / Malmsteen duet... Yes I also witnessed this on AudioGalaxy

World's fastest shredder

After listening to his (rather boring and most unimpressive) compositions, I think Chris Impellitteri may actually rip the fingerboard faster than Malmsteen or Vinnie Moore. Naturally, this results in needlessly long and out of context soloing, very monotonous and ordinary riffs and zero melody. Now someone like Satriani who plays at a tenth of the speed of the above can really liven up a song through sheer melodic playing, something that Malmsteen (IMHO) and Impellitteri definitely lacks. What is it about speed that is such a turn on?

Re: World's fastest shredder

hmm, good question. maybe its the attention grabing-ness of it? like really dissonant chords except insted of melody, u put it in rythem. or would that be stuff like weird time counts? bah, anyhoo, yeah, umm i don't know!

Re: World's fastest shredder

I agree, and the answer to your query is simple, It is becuase no other person can do it, there will always be someone who is the fastest. Like you stated it doesn't mean that the composition is the best, I love to play gilmours stuff, & with practice you can get his songs nailed, yet no matter how much I practice sweep picking I can't get up to speed to play my fav Zappa stuff. I don't give a fuck what anyone says, speed counts. It's making sound good thats hard, phil

Re: World's fastest shredder

I guess it's because people think that if you can play faster than everyone else you must be better than everyone else. You can't get anymore wrong than that! There is nothing wrong with speed playing when it is combined with emotion. But if you are playing really fast just to show people how fast you can play, the whole meaning of music is gone.

Re: World's fastest shredder

There's a lot of fast dudes out there! I like Steven Vai,Al D'meola,Zakk Wylde,Eddie V.Speed is very exciting, and the audience likes it too...to a point. Phrasing is also important when soloing. It's like telling a story.Joe Perry,Duane Roland(Molly Hatchet),
Eddie Hazel can take 5 notes and milk them to death... in sync!To have good speed and phrasing makes for an interesting solo! Bucket-head is a very fast dude also!

Re: World's fastest shredder

STEVE VAI is most definetley the fastest and the best (besides Satch)
