Help this girl out ! ! !
I need a good reverb pedal. What's the best one? Will a digital reverb pedal make my signal digital even if all my other pedals are analogue? ? ?
Re: Help this girl out ! ! !
I'm not going to be a big help here Jane ... I love reverb so I have amps that have this .....both Fenders ....Tweed Blues Deluxe and Satellite amps ..Like to set at 3 so get extra sustain and more depth in sound ..I've got a DOD Tec-8 effects processor but I rarely use it ...the digitial signal is too dry and thin for my tastes ..so just get in the car and start hitting the local guitar stores ( funtime always !) and see what you like ...your the only one that has to be happy with sound !!
Crispy :)~
Re: Help this girl out ! ! !
I've never seen a dedicated Reverb pedal. But, I have the Boss RV-3, which is the Digital Reverb and Delay pedal. It is a great pedal, the Reverb is excellent. No, having a digital pedal (digital delay, for example) will not cause the rest of your signal to become digital. The only thing that is digital is the certain digital effect. I hope this helps a little. Good luck.

FX Loop on Marshall 2205 JCM 800
Ok here goes- on a previous discussion on here- someone mentioned running some pedals thru the fx loop can potentially burn out a pedal. I recently bought an ADA Flanger- original- when I run this and/or my EH Bad Stone through the fx loop on my Marshall JCM 800 2205- there is a signifigant volume reduction. On the ADA my tone actually gets really muddy -MY EH Small Clone re-issue works great throught the loop. Every article I've read on running fx thru the loop state- things like Flange,Delay,Chorus Etc- sound best in the loop as to not get muddied. Is there too much voltage going to my pedals thus the volume reduction- I'm running these 2 pedals thru the front now- any insight would be great- thank you-

12 String Patch sound for Zoom GFX 707
Can any Zoom GFX707 user send me a reccomended patch setting for a 12 string acoustic guitar sound? Email me: [email protected]

String gauge rage!!!
Your collective wisdom is appreciated... I play a JS 100 which is on the brink of destruction! I have performed pickup transplants, single coil surgery, and heavy gauge strings trying to extract good tone. Nothing has gone down too well, the neck and floyd trem hate 12-52's, and I seem to go through pickups too often- heavy handed technique and metal picks seem to mess with them a little... anyway, I love the tone I get from the strings, and I'm not going to curb my technique. I like the tone of Ric 620's and Dou-jet's, can they handle it? How do you other heavy gauge players deal with the instability, etc. ?
Re: String gauge rage!!!
metal picks? are you serious? whats that sound like? i've tried it on mine but it was pretty icky. anyhoo, i can really only suggest that u take the floyd rose out. as for the pickups dropping out often, thats pretty odd. u might wanna curb ur metal picked ways juuuuuust a little if u wanna save the instrument.
i'm really no pro on tech stuff yet, but my ears pricked up when i saw the metal pick stuff! hehehe
can anyone else help?

Brian May of Queen always used (still does?!) metal picks - old sixpences. Billy Gibbons, similarly, I believe. I've always found them a littlel too harsh. Some jazz players use wooden ones, and if you live near the sea go and route around from some flat pebbles and give that a go. Experiment - it's a giggle. I play ordinary plastic ones nowadays - it's simpler.
On heavy strings, I play 12s but I play older guitars, which were made when light strings weren't around, so they're quite happy with heavier strings. If I bought something dead modern I'd probably be a bit nervous about using heavy strings on it.

get a band together
I am a 28 yrold female who is interested in getting a bnd started.. I sing country music and love it and love to have a band..I live in Michigan and if anyone is interested please e-mail me.......
Re: get a band together
Hi Brenda,
How about a virtual band - I mean through internet. This way we coud compose, arrange,
record, master and finally produce some great tunes. Joe Satriani (though in different style)
did his latest album this way... and he earns a lot ;-)))
The reason is I am living in Bulgaria and my band's singer (female) left us for other carreer.
Just take a look at our site at: http://members.nbci.com/boro5xl/
We are not your plain bluesers - I could send ou some MP3s to check our sound and style.
Looking forward to hearing from you soon, I remain
Yours sincerely,
Boro
Re: get a band together
Brenda I suggest you take that guy up on his offer, clearly he has the ability to master with the use on a PC, plus he can probably set up web pages. Who knows it would be worth a look. We sell backing tracks that I create with an Or2 & sw1000xg. I was suprise to find how many we sold. In fact it was so popular we had to stop as it was distrupting my normal work. Give it a go & good luck. Phil

Now I was going to suggest facetiously that I'd love to form a band with you but I live three thousand miles away. I'm clearly way out of date because Borislav has got that problem well and truly nailed. If you need another guitarist - and yes I know they're ten a penny - let me know!!
Re: get a band together
Playing country music, and especially being female will mean that you are crap. Who would want to play with you anyway.
Stompboxes and Effects Loops
I have a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe and I use a bunch of stompboxes. I was told that the Power Amp In and Pre-Amp Out can be used as an effects loop(the amp doesn't have effects send and return jacks). Is this true? If it is, how do I connect my effects to it since there is only one input and one output on the effects pedals? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Re: Stompboxes and Effects Loops
a friend of mines got that amp, she just uses an me-30 (multi fx unit) tho, but i think she might do it how ur doing it. as far as i know, u'd go from the pre-amp out into the pedals. then go from pedal to pedal and ra ra ra. then just take the last pedal in the chain and put it into the power amp in. watch the volume if it has it on the last pedal. cause i don't think the amp vol controls will work, but i really don't know. but screw around with this setup and see if u get anywhere with it
good luck
I dont know how my 1978 mesa boogie mark 1 works
My mark is a good sounding amp that I got a hold of from a guy getting rid of it. Its sounds sweet, there is a whole deal of different inputs in the back of the amp, but I dont know what they do. I dont even know if the speaker jack is pluged into the right input. I heard there are different ohms setting in each input. There are two right next to each other. There arent any discriptions anywhere. I heard there was several different versions of the 1978 MArk 1. My mark 1 has the EQ, no reverb, no presence, volumes 1 and 2, 2 inputs in the front, 60 rms/100rms switch. I asked mesa boogie for the manual and all they sent me was a maintnance guid just in case it broke down. Dosnt really say what everything does. Would really appreciate the help. Thanx, Will

Carvin guitars
I'm considering buying a Carvin AE185 for soft jazz & new age and/or a CL450 for classical. Anyone own either of these? Are they really as great as the literature claims?
Re: Carvin guitars
Hi I’m not a very good Jazz player but my mate is here & has one of these & has he is here your in luck, His Carvin AE185 has 24 frets, mahogany neck with a maple top, 2 humbuckers a phase switch and dual to single coil switch, piezo pickups, blend control, treble boost/cut for the piezo pickup, plus a active treble boost/cut for electric pickups, acoustic style bridge, sperzel locking tuning pegs, plus his came with a case.
He like this guitar because it give a reasonable number of sounds, from thin to medium jazzy, or a even an acoustic sound. It's his main guitar. & he play it though either an acoustic amps or his tube electric! Plus I think this thing is great for feedback, he gets this easy, probably because its acoustic response; just turn your body a little this way or that and off it goes! According to him the sound is perfect for Jazz as it’s deep, full and rich with plenty of sustain. I just wish I had one. Phil G

guitar ID
I have a small (classical?) guitar with flamenco style tuners. It is about the size of a Martin model 2 and has a laminated rosewood back but solid rosewood sides with a solid spruce top. The neck is cedar with a V-spliced headstock. All binding is wood with plain wood bands around the sound-hole Inside is 5 fan braces and and on the underside of the soundboard is a pencilled signature. The first word is Goold, then either Maker or Makev or even Malcev. It came with a metal tailpiece and a curved fingerboard, but I think they might be later additions. It's very well made and appears very old, but in good condition. Any suggestions?

He posted this…Don't know much about the Bluesbreaker.I've been playing for 22yrs.This forum is about people voicing their opinions, but you seem like you've got alot to prove.Especially to me!Hey dude, relax!Meglomania is most unattractive.I can tell by your tone, there's definatly a jealousy issue going on here.I know what I know through experience. And if I don't know,I admit it!
In case you haven't noticed, you are making enemies with
your attitude!
My reply….Eddie firstly, I thought your choice of pedals were spot on. However I offered a few alternative ones. Both the Marshal Bluesbreaker & Jackhammer are great pedals, well worthy of looking at. Plus to reply to your comment I have nothing to prove but lots to offer in the way of advice. Jealousy, well lets see! Last week I set up 3 pc studios up for guitarist in my area, for free. I often give anyone who asks for my tab, any of my midi files for free. I write backing tracks for 9 schools for free. If someone needs an expensive music package I give it to them for free (did I say that out loud, oops). I teach guitar to kids for free. Clearly where you come from this annoys people. I enjoy music & I enjoy it most when others create stuff that no-one else has created. Do I really sound envious to you. As it goes, if people want advice then I will give my opinion, & if it hurts then take a pill. Eddie have you ever noticed how ‘the really bright student, the eager questioner, the probing searcher, especially if he is brighter than his teacher, is too often seen as a 'wise guy,' a threat to discipline, a challenger of his teacher's authority.’ Plus consider that Every guitarist is, in part, 'his own project' and tries to make himself. So do you think you should be putting people down who have struggled & learnt from highly skilled & educated people like yourself. Plus the first thing I learnt was that true wisdom is to know the extent of what you don't know just as well as you know what you do know. However I am sorry if you have been offended, but I don’t subscribe to the notion of Least said, soonest mended! Thanks to everyone who has emailed me with questions & also given me vaulable advice. Pack it in, the pair of you. Both of you - in my opinion - have supplied good advice on a number of occasions. If someone's tone seems off, perhaps they'd like to be careful how they word things in future. Perhaps others will try and just shrug it off. The overall tone of this site, I've found, is wonderfully friendly. Please don't spoil it. All the best to you both.
Keith.
Re: Should we not voice our views?
I've gotten (and probably given) Both good and bad advice on this site. But for the most part it is a great site and upbeat. I'd like to see it stay that way. Just remember different musicians have had different experiences, thats what makes the world go round! Good luck
POD or J-Station!!??
Hey i'm having trouble choosing between the POD 2.0 and the J-Station, if anyone has any input at all please E-mail me!!!
Re: POD or J-Station!!??
I have yet to play a pod but I have played a J-station. I like the J-station a lot. I actually own
a Johnson JT50 amp which has many of the features of the J-station. I have used the amp for
recording and it sounds great. From what I have read, the J-station is a bit more difficult to
program than a pod but once you learn it you are fine. The pod is a bit more expensive.
I have played a Line6 Flextone II that I really liked. It comes down to what you like better. Compare them
side by side if you can. Ask the salesman at the store which he has sold more of and what
people have told him about after they have bought each. I don't think you will be disappointed
either way. If you can, buy it at a Guitar Center or Mars where they have a 30 day return policy
provided you dont destroy the product in that time.
Share opinions on some mp3's!
Hi Everyone,
I used to post a lot on these types of forums but have been out of it for a while (got married, etc). But I recently got back into recording. I wrote a new guitar instrumental called "Intensity". It is a rock/blues piece that I tried to have convey a sense of energy and intensity. I've tried to incorporate some techniques that I thougt would sound interesting (as opposed to plain old pentatonic). You'll hear some chromaticism, sweeps, etc. It's my way of trying to add personal touch. Anyway, let me know what you think. I have some other recordings I made a while back posted as well. All can be downloaded at the following url. Hope to hear from some of you regardless of whether or not the feedback is good or bad!!

buying an electric
Hi,
I am looking to buy an electric guitar and don't know too much about what to look for in them. Could someone please recommend some guitars? Here are some of the things I have been considering while shopping around:
*Price range: I would like to spend $500 - $800
*I will be using this primarily for recording using Cakewalk on my computer.
*I won't be taking it "on the road" ( I don't perform).
*I record different types of music; punky songs, pink floydy type songs, poppy songs. I do a lot of finger picking and often use open chords. But many of my songs use basic chords.
*I will apply distortion for some of my songs. Other effects I will be using include reverb, chorus, flange, delay, etc. I will also record it clean, without any effects.
*I want a guitar that will stay in tune pretty well.
*I don't need a whammy bar.
*I want to get what I pay for (or more for what I pay for).
What are some good brand names?? I hear Gibson guitars are very good. Are there other brand names that make high quality guitars but aren't as well
known and consequently have guitars for less money?
Please recommend some guitars. Also, if someone could recommend a website that talks about what to look for in an electric guitar, I would appreciate
it. I would also appreciate any other tips as far as what to look for in a electric guitar or how to get some good deals on guitars. What are good pickups?
thanks,
davidg
Re: buying an electric
Hi David
For the money you are spending, you should be able to find the guitar youare looking for. Although
you did not mention if you are looking for new or used. You have the right idea in first thinking
about what type of stuff you are going to be playing. You should decide if you want a guitar
with single coils or humbucking pickups. Humbuckers are less noisy and can give you more
output (and more crunch if you use a dirty tone) and single coils are brighter and 'jangly' (think strat).
For a brand recomendation, I recommend Hamer Guitars. In your price range you can easily
get a used model. They are great for everything. I have 4 Hamers from a LesPaul style, to
an 80's Metal Type to a strat. All are versitile and great values for the money. They do have
an import line that isn't as nice. You can tell the difference by looking for a small USA near the
Logo on the readstock. New USA hamers are out of your proce range but used they are an even
better value. I am so confident in their brand that I bought 2 of mine through the internet
without even playing them. They are solid.
Gibsons are going to be out of your price range unless you go used also. They can be junky.
Check out the little things like fretwork and finish to see what I mean. Because they crank out
so many of them quality control suffers. Same with Fender.
It all comes down to what you feel comfortable with. Check out this website:
www.kamanmusic.com for hamer info. There is a forum called hamer freaks there where you can
always find a good used hamer for sale.
Re: buying an electric
You sound like somone who is completely new to the guitar, yet you seem to know already the kind of sounds you want to get from it. It sounds like you'll need something versatile, and to elaborate a little on Im2's post, there is a difference in the sound of pickups: humbucking type pickups put out a lot of midrange and output, which is great for those punk rock distortion sounds you want. Single coil pickups have less output and midrange, which means they sound more 'clean,' better with a little chorus and little to no distortion effect.
The quality of pickups varies a lot, and for recording purposes and the money you're willing to spend, you shouldn't compromise on quality. Cheaper pickups can be shrill or harsh sounding, and can exhibit unwanted microphonics, or high pitched resonances that can cause uncrontrollable feedback. Stay away from 'made in Korea.'
Look for neck and body materials used to construct the guitar. The kind of wood used has a big impact on the tone, as much as pickup type. Mahogany, as used on Gibsons for their bodies and necks, sounds deep and warm, but quite dark. Fender guitars commonly use ash or alder for their bodies, and maple for their necks, both of which sound brighter than mahogany. Fingerboards cand be made from maple or ebony (for a bright tone), or rosewood (for a warmer tone). Cheaper guitars might use plywood or poplar, both of which sound quite bright.
Scale length, or the length of the string from the nut to the bridge, is different from guitar to guitar, and affects the tone and feel of the instrument. Fender uses a longer scale length to yeild a snappy tone, but the increase in string tension makes them a little harder to play. Gibson uses a shorter scale which mellows the tone and makes them easier to play, but have less sustain than a Fender scale, and can sound a little 'plonky.' How big are your hands? What feels right?
Confused yet? It's a big decision! It is easy to say stay with the big names like Fender or Gibson. I think you'd be just as happy with a full spec Japanese or U.S.A. Ibanez, and the Hamers are a high quality instrument aswell! Don't go Samick, Epiphone, De Armond, blah blah. If you're serious enough about your tone to spend that much money, you can afford to be more selective.
Hope you liked the essay... I harp on a little, I know!

: it. I would also appreciate any other tips as far as what to look for in a electric guitar or how to get some good deals on guitars. What are good pickups?
: thanks,

I'd second what the others have said, but also suggest you have a look at Carvin guitars. They tend to deal entirely by mail order, which allows them to supply higher quality guitars at lower prices, as they eliminate the retail profit margin. That's their theory anyway. Never played one but they have an impressive list of people endorsing them. They should have a website.
AMP under $300 ???
I am buying a mexistrat and i would like to get a good amp as well. What is a good amp w/effects and good tone for $250 to $300. I just play at home and in small gigs at other homes(but they can get pretty loud. I've heard the 30 watt CRATE amps are good and have good built in effects. Please give me some advice.
Re: AMP under $300 ???
I've had good experience with Crate amps. But Peavey also makes good inexpensive amps.Thought the RAGE 112
was very good, distortion and reverb.I also had a Fender
112(?)some years ago,was very impressed.

Never played one myself but every review I've ever seen of a Tokai praises them very highly. In the 80s when Gibson quality was quite poor many reviewers reckoned Tokai were easily better than what Gibson themselves were producing. (Please can you turn your capitals off, Simon - it's like you're shouting) Good luck, and have fun.
Keith and Drew, R.E. Metal picks!
Well now, there's a story... New Zealand has two main islands, and a ferry service which provides a link between them. The ferries have these unusual machines onboard- if you feed them a 5 cent coin, and a dollar coin, they flatten out the five cent into a souvenir! Kind of oval and very thin, still with the serated edge and an image of the ferry stamped into them. The dollar is kept as payment! I discovered these machines sort of by accident one time, and made sure I brought tons of change with me next time, as they make the best picks! The tone is more harmonically complex, and if you want you can make it sound really harsh and offensive (cool :-D), plus if you use the edge of the pick pressed against the strings it sounds a bit like some kind of demented slide guitar, which I like to use instead of 'yr cliched pick slide or divebomb effect... very twisted and sinister! Heavy gauge strings are great because they can take the abuse and put out a much fuller tone. Backing off the treble a little softens the tone, and the initial pick attack can sound like Brian May, although an AC30, a homemade guitar and his fingertips might help a little aswell!!
Re: Keith and Drew, R.E. Metal picks!
Sure, metal picks are great....if you want to completely destroy your strings and mutilate your guitars finish.
Re: Keith and Drew, R.E. Metal picks!
Strings are expendable. Scratches add character!
Re: Keith and Drew, R.E. Metal picks!
lol, rock on pahtnah!
Re: Keith and Drew, R.E. Metal picks!
well, now there is a story. i've discovered that martha stewart craft already. it does crip your strings, but sounds pretty cool. good idea lance, and don't rip on other's ideas guys... when he's living it down, you'll wish you could have been there.

COOL! WANT ONE!!!! Now I just need to persuade my wife that there are more palatable reasons for travelling halfway round the world to catch a ferry! Thanks, Lance, it's a lovely story and I'll spend the rest of the day grinning about it.
