Advice on acoustic guitar purchase

Hi! You all probably hear these kinds of questions all of the time, I'm sorry, but I am just starting to learn to play the guitar, and I need some advice on what to purchase. For example, where should I look to find a relatively inexpensive guitar, and what's a decent brand for acoustic guitars? Any help would be much appreciated.

: Fender, Washburn, Sigma and Yamaha all make great acoustics for beginners. I'd sample all of them to see what you like best. Also ask abou getting a case and find out about the warranty. If you buy a used guitar, make sure the neck isn't warped and that there are no major cracks in the body or neck. Don't let salesmen at a store push you into a purchase.

I know this is a bit late but I haven't checked
this site in a few days.
Hi Julie! Some dilemna! Can't get started without
a guitar and can't pick a guitar if you're not
sure what to look for. You're best bet would be to
find an experienced picker to help you find what
you are looking for. If you have time to look
around, you may find a good used guitar at a good
price. Washburn, Epiphone, Yahama, and Takamine
are good guitars for the money, when looking at
new guitars ($150 to $200 range). Anything less
is likely to be junk (difficult to play and poor
sounding. Play it before you buy it!

help on buying a pedal

Ok , im trying to decide what to buy,if u have or have had any of these then tell me how they sound and if thier good enough to buy, boss band graphic equilizer, boss metal zone, boss ds1 distortion, dod gs30 guitar effects processor, dod death metal distortion , or any digitech foot pedal like the whammy
any suggestions of which one of these i should buy cause im looking for the sound like in metallica, korn, slipknot, taproot, and greenday or blink.

It is the only way to ensure that you get what you want. Plenty of pedals(especially distortion) are great in the shop, through a hot amp. But when you take it home to your 25 watt practice amp it sounds like crap.(of course I don't know if you have a Marshall stack either, no offense meant).
Many of the bands you mentioned, although pictured in ads with various pedals and things, don't use those things on stage or in the studio. Many of those bands use hot rodded tube amps(Mesa Triple Rectifiers I believe) to get that punishing distortion sound. You'll find the pedals you listed may not deliver the goods.
Boss DS-1: Thin raspy distortion
Boss Metal Zone: Thicker, more bottom heavy, but not well defined, can't hear individual notes.
DODDeath: Great in the bedroom, non-existant live.
Multi-effects: Great way to get lots o' pedals for cheap, but all the effects have a certain sound and it effects the guitar all the time if it's plugged in.
To get rid of this, you need more $.
EQ: Great for dialing a distortion pedal to your liking, but won't give you fuzz on it's own.

Also try a Pro-co Turbo Rat and a Big Muff. Both deliver awesome distortion in any setting.
The Tech 21 XXL with a humbucking pick-up is good too.

Im at pretty much the same point. I just bought a Jackson with a dbl locking tremolo and a Fender amp. Now I need some pedals. But I really have no idea what some of them do. If you could describe these to me I'd really appreciate it. Octave pedal, Blues Driver, Phase Shifter, Overdrive, Flanger, and the Erogenous Moan Tape Simulator...
I know that's a long list but I'd really like to understand what each of these do. I'm not looking to have a sound like Korn or any of these other radio friendly bands. Im wondering what i should get to develop my own sound. All suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

for something to start out with, the DIGITECH RP200 is a very nice effects peddle, it's got 80 effects and 40 of em you can customize to make your own sound as you said you wanted, it's got a tuner and drum machine built in, and if you dont want it to effect your guitar when plugged theres an bypass feature that makes it so it sounds like the guitar is just plugged into the amp, i have one of these peddles and it works great, i have a Fender 250watt amp so you can see what im working with, they cost about $300 Canadian, but are worth it, they save a lot of money compared to if you bought all the peddles seperate.

Floyd Rose bar problem

I have an Ibanez RG with a Floyd Rose double lock. Problem is the handle or "whammy bar". It will not stay put! As soon as you use it, it swings straight down or even further away. Anyone got a solution to stiffen it up and make it stay put? I hate to go searching for it when i need it. Ice Cold, Anchorage, Alaska.

a friend of mine had the same trouble. he put some plumbers tape around the thread of the bar, it worked a treat. good luck

I use tongs to tighten the nut on the bar properly and the bar stays put, on my floyd the nut doesn't go even nearly all the way down and the more i thighten the "stiffer" the bar gets.

I have an Ibanez RG 570 and had the same trouble. The problem is that plastic at the end of the bar (in the body of guitar). I had a repairman drill a bigger hole and put "shaller" whammy bar on. It is much more robust and what is really great: you can adjust tha bar to stay up, stay back, roll around,...
I suggest you whammy bar from "Shaller" or "Schaller" i dont know...BYE BYE

I own this amp. It can get pretty darn loud in a bedroom. Although I haven't tried it, I think that it's loud enought to fill a dive bar or large coffee shop. Note, however, that Carvin almost instantly scaled the wattage up to 50 in the very next year of production of these amps. Still, you can find the 33 used and try it out, then if you need more power, get a matching cab for about the same differential price between the 33 and the 50. Hope this helps. I was looking at spending around $300-400 for something I can have for a long time.

lessons.You'll progress faster.Also,ask your teacher to
help you learn songs from your favorite artists.Jam along with records and cop a few licks from your guitar
heros.Anyone who says they don't do this is lying. Nobody learns in a vaccum.

I used to own one in the early 70's. It was a piggy back with 2 -12's It was solid state. I think Hilgen was owned by RCA.

I have heard good things about them, but have no experience myself. Have you heard of lawrences? If so do you have any opinions on them? (I know, bob, they're crap)? The price is pretty right on those as well.

I'm an old fart rebuilding my 66 Jaguar, I'm using a Maple Strat neck, Jag body. I'm gonna use 2 humbuckers and I'm trying to decide on a bridge. I don't want to spend a fortune on this project, but I don't want junk either. The Lawerence name sounds familar, but I don't know anything about them. I quit playing guitar in the early 70's, got alot of catching up to do.
Any Ideas?

If you're an old fart I guess I'm a young whipper-snapper building my second guitar, but it's the first one I'm doing all by myself (i used an old neck last time). What are jaguars supposed to sound like, or even more so, what do you WANT it to sound like? Go to this site, http://www.rfd.cc/ugf/ and search the forum for "Bill Lawrence." From what it sounds like, he's really got some good tone down to a science. I used a stop-tailpiece on my last guitar and am using a Schaller variation thereof for this one (roller saddles/fine tuning). If you like the tone/look of stop tailpieces, they're pretty easy to do. I suggest (if you don't already) that you order the stew-mac catalog (www.stewmac.com) because it has lots of stuff to help. Also, warmoth has a lot of well-priced stuff too.
Good luck, andone more site, www.mimf.com, go look through that stuff, it should answer most questions you'll have, although maybe not pickup choice.
Let me know how it comes out.

Hey Rick,
I can't believe it, you didn't call me a few names! Well, a Jag sounds like, well think beach boys, thin sounding, and I want something else more on the tone side. Bill lawerence pups seem like just the ticket, and the price I couldn't believe! If they were good enough for Roy Bucannon they should be fine for me. I've decieded to go with a "fixed" bridge #0577 in the StewMac catalog. I'm getting to work on the body this week, so I can start figuring where the bridge will mount because of the Strat 25.5" scale. It will indeed be a different guitar.
