Question about Tone Wood

Does anyone know the tonal qualities of African Padauk wood or Koa wood as they relate to acoustic guitars, and what sound it gives to the guitar (Sound when on the back, sides, soundboard, etc.)

Any help would be appreciated.

The African Padauk wood I am not sure about but Koa is very warm and resonant.

Play every single day, but try not to see it as a chore, learn to do it to relax and enjoy yourself. If you don't find it relaxing or enjoyable, I'd probably keep trying until you do, or give up, preferably the former. It won't take long.

I got a spanish guitar about 6 months ago. i wasn't used to the height of the strings and was playing only about 6 months. so i decided to get a file and file down the saddle and nut. Now i can't play any notes at the 12 fret on high e. also can anyone tell me what kind of gauges to use. i curently have .13 on it. any feedback will be appreciated

: you probably should have adjusted the neck first instead of messing with the nut. apart fomr getting a new nut, which you may have to do...adjust the neck to add relief...take an allen wrench, turn it about 1/4 of the way, maybe less clockwise...seee if it helps...if it does but its not perfect, turn it alittle more. dont turn it more then mayne once around. if it doesnt do any good, try turning it counterclock wise.

I want to change the battery in a Boss ME-5 but can't see what type ist is without taking it out. Does anybody have a circuit diagram or do you know what it is ?
I assume I need to change it with the unit switched on to avoid losing the memory ?

Check out a my tunes and tell me what you think. I'm putting this together as part of a CD. I get the feeling that the music is too eclectic and doesn't have enough same-ness from song to song. I dig that kinda thing but I'm getting the general feeling that most people don't. In my mind it's all Blues but some people may feel you need to pick a style and to stick to only that. Let me know. You're pretty damn good, a hell of a lot better than Johney rock. I'd kinda like to know your equipment/settings for "mr. bad luck" and "better off," because your guitar sounds really good.

Thanx man. I appreciate that. On "Mister Bad Luck" the lead tone is from a 5150 and a Vox Wah. I have it set up thru the clean input with a low gain setting. The guitar is a Fender 60's Reissue with DiMarzio Virtual Vintage pickups. From neck to bridge: Blues, Heavy Blues, and Solo. The funk guitar lines were plugged into a bass pre-amp right into the board. I used a stock Fender 70's Reissue for that. During the bridge section it was the 60's reissue with a Dunlop Rotovibe and a bit of delay to get that dreamy quality. On the song "Better Off" it's the 60's Reissue again and a Peavey Classic 50 4X10. We put the amp in my producer's bathroom and miked to death. Front, back, and even on in the shower. We also ran a line out from the amp to the board. That was the lead tone which I played dry with a lot of treble. We added a bit of reverb later during the mix. For the rhythm I plugged straight into the board with a Yamaha SBG2000 using both push push pots to get that inbetween thing from both pickups. I popped in the Rotovibe and a bit of delay just for the turnaround section. That's basically it. So what did you think of the other tunes? Do you think they all fit together as a complete CD? I have three tunes to go. A blues funk tune, rhumba, and a slow blues. Let me know.

I liked the others too, for the most part, but those two were my definite favorites. I think that packaging them all on one CD shows your depth as a musician. People who say that they don't fit together are obviously overlooking the fact that they all have very similar roots, in music history, as well as in music theory. I gotta try that "amp in the bathroom" idea.

You hit the nail on the head. That's the thing. It's all Blues but not all the same style of Blues. Some people miss that but I'm glad you got it. Thanx.

I use to own a Line 6 AX2 and I gotta tell you that tubes are the way to go. There's no substitute for the real deal.

I meant to ask you, what EQ settings do you use? I simply can't get anything to sound anything close to Clapton/B.B./ Stevie Ray good blues lead tone. I have guitars/pickups that should be capable of pulling it off, but I just can't figure it out. Do you think that I just need to get a tube amp instead of using a solid-state?

5150 is great if you know how to use it. People dig the tone on "Mister Bad Luck" more than on any of the other tunes. It's in the hands Einstein! Where's YOUR CD you bedroom noodling bed wetter?

GFX 707 effects loop.

When I listen to my Zoom GFX 707 with headphones, it sounds fantastic. I have a Princeton Chorus Amp; How can I get this tone through my amp? Normal connections don't work. The tone is not the same as through headphones. HELP.................

the reatial price on a Ibanez EX270 is about $375. I got mine for $100 in a pawn shop. if you know any one look for any guitars send me an e-mail? I got them or can get them at a low price.

tips for using thicker guitar strings

I play a Mexican Strat and love Stevie Ray Vaughans music. I want to use thicker strings, im getting it set up by someone else for 11 guage strings (its a tone thing), any tips for 12 guage strings? Will I need glue for me fingers? Yeah i know he used 13's but i think that would tear my fingers off.

Kudos for bigger strings. They last longer, tune better and with some getting used to can be bent just as easily as 9's. You'll find your guitar sounds better and "rings" more.

I've been playing guitar for over 27 years and I agree with heavier strings. The tone is much better, chords are cleaner and with a little time, you will adjust. I use 11,15,19,30,42,60 on my strat. By the way, the 60 is a bass string. The ball is to big to fit in the block, but it can hang out of the bottom. It works just fine. I've been using this set for years. Earnie Ball..... The Hybrid 10-52s are good also. I use them on my Tele... Most of all, have fun and enjoy yourself; Thats the ticket to being good. Have fun..... P.S. I tune to E flat on my Strat.....

Holy shit??!! You use a 60 for low E?
I totally agree that big strings make big sounds. There's something to be said for the amount of commitment it takes to get SRV speed out of fencing wire...

I'm also a strat player and I use 11's currently. You'll want to add 1 or two springs to the tremelo block as well. It aids in tuning, and keeps the guitar in tune while playing a bent note along with a static note. 'nuther tip, raise your bridge pickup a bit to capture a gut wrenching lead tone.

I'm a Jazz player. I use 14,18,21,31,41,55 Thomastik-Infeld Flat Wound Guitar Strings. If you prefer a good tone, before ease of playing. Heavy gauge strings are what you need. Look at George Benson. Another important factor is the Pick. A large thick pick played at a right angle to the string improves the clarity and tone of the note.

Vai picks the winner and the winner gets a personal lesson with him and a guitar....
They have an online 8-track recorder at the tonos.com site, and Vai just removed the guitar track so you record your stuff and it automatically submits it...
AWESOME!!!
I already entered, and I shouldn't set up more competition for myself, but this is something that every guitar player should know about....

ABOUT 1.5 MM ON THE TOP E AND ABOUT 2 MM ON THE BOTTOM E(BOTH AT THE 12TH FRET) MAKE SURE THE NUTS NOT TO HIGH, AS THIS WILL CAUSE PROBLEMS ON THE FIRST FEW FRETS PS.THIS A ROUGH GUIDE,BUT SHOULD BE COMFORTABLE TO PLAY. GOOD LUCK, TOM GLENN

I had a Les paul and i could never get the string height right.I hate those screw on bridges.

Proper string height (Gibson specs from when they made them in Kalamazoo) is as follows: with the neck properly adjusted (that is straight, no "relief") it should be at the 12th fret, 3/64" for the high E, and 5/64" for the low E. Les Paul Customs were to be at 3/64" and 4/64", all in keeping with their nickname of "Fretless Wonder".

Don't try to adjust the height at the nut unless you know what you're doing...let a pro at a shop do that part.
