WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH THE ORIGINA PICKUP AFTHER I CHANGE IT WITH EMG PICKUP???

Keep it, in case you come to sell the guitar so you can stick them back in and keep the good pickups.
Customising is a lost investment on the second hand market - people tend to want original parts no matter how crap they are.

Ibanez RG270 problem

When I'm playing the Metallica solos using my RG270, it just can't able to come out with those high pitch parts with loud and clear sound. Anybody has the similar problem. Is it caused by the pickup or the setup problem?

Metallica's not really my style, but Megadeth or Slayer is more like it for me. Just dish out a couple hundred for some EMGs, and you'll be just fine. I put out about 360$ and got an EMG-81 and an EMG-89 (which is an EMG-S and EMG-85 in the same casing). My guitar has never sounded sweeter.

Gibson ES335 w/ old numbers

Can anybody date this guitar for me? What I've got is an old Gibson which I believe is an ES335 but was recently told could be an older 15o something because ofd the serial number. Has a five digit # 41706. Any help? Also looking for a collar for one tuning peg. Oh yeah, this guitar also has an adjustable bridge with a Bigsby tailpiece, all original. Thanks, whimsmith

According to their website, that Serial # is from 1961. They started making 335s in the late 50s ('57 or '58 I think), so it could certainly be a 335. They're easy to identify, just look for these things.

Double cutaway, F-holes, a solid piece down the center of the body (aka semi-hollow body construction), two humbucking pickups, 4 knobs, 1 toggle switch. Either dot inlays or small (single) rectangular inlays in the fingerboard.

Go to http://webserver.gibson.com/downloads//bluebook/GibsonSERIALNUMBERS.pdf to find the serial numbers.

Go to www.stewmac.com to see if you can find the part for the machine head (tuning key).

Hi, look, though I'm female, I have had some woodworking experience
and have, with the help of my older brother, built a solid body guitar
that looks like a PRS with two horns, etc.. I want a thick sound but
not as thick as a humbucker. What I'm hoping to do is, have the thing
wired as a Stratocaster, with single coil pickups and a five position
switch to allow the "out of phase" sound.

Does anyone know of any single coil Strat style pickups that will give a
much more solid, more powerful sound than the standard single coils? Are
there any more powerful, even ultra powerful single coil pickups out there
made for a Strat?
Thanks in advance for any help/advice on this.

Howdy!

Try some DiMarzio or Duncan Single coils. They tend to have more output. The Fender fat 50's are higher output than normal Fenders also.
By your description you may want to consider P-90's though. They are a true single coil with great output. They can get into the humbucker range but generaly don't.
Since you say you have some experience with building, maybe try 2 humbuckers wired so you can split the coils into singles. I have done this with a DiMarzio X2N and an EMG. I get a whole plethora of sounds comming out of 1 axe without having too many bells and whistles.

The Seymore Lil'59 or J.B.jr sound very good and have tons more output than stock pickups.The D'Marzio HS-3's
are also pretty good.I'd stay away from the EMG single
coil pickups.Too sterile.

Tokai stuff,the ones I've played, are very good.Built like Fenders and Gibsons but are more comfortable.Good choice.

white with a superb played to death r/w neck with early Bill Lawrence L220 pickups.Go for earlier models if you can

I owned a '57 re-issue Tokai strat and it was a beautifully made axe.
Lake placid blue with a great maple neck the trouble was the pups were aweful very thin flat crappy tone.

Fender Stagemaster 2001

The problem is you have a Samick. Very low end guitars are hard to keep in tune because the parts are cheap and the wood is probably plywood and not solid.

Have a competent repairman set it up first

I do a lot of repair work. Most of the time when somebody comes in and tells me that his guitar won't stay in tune it's because it either has old crappy strings on it, or the intonation isn't set properly, or both. First, put new strings on it and check the intonation on a tuner (play a harmonic at the 12th fret and then fret the note, the fretted note should be the same as the harmonic, if it's sharp or flat the intonation is out). Check it on each string.

It's probably not the machine heads (tuners) themselves. Gotohs are very well made actually.

If you play on really light strings it'll tend to be hard to keep in tune also, try going up a gauge or two (maybe .011 to .050) if you're using .009s.

If you bend strings and they go flat afterward there are two things: one, make sure when you're tuning, you tune UP to the pitch, not down to it; two, the strings sometimes catch in the nut if it's not smooth and the right size. Don't try to fix this yourself, let a repairman do it.

Nothing wrong with Samick they are a quality mid to low end instrument.
As long as intonation is spot on and thew strings don't stick in the nut and your machines are good, as the other guy said Gotohs are good I got em on my 1972 Guild S100 and they work better than the original Grovers.
The key is tune up to the correct pitch and make sure it's always in tune., always!
A lot of guys will pick up their axe find that it's out of tune and just tune up to the closest string without using a tuner. What happens is the neck gets confused unless it always has the same tension on it so it never settles down to a constant tension.
If you tune to the exact same pitch at all times the neck settles in and gets used to the same pitch and pretty well stays the same,...That's the answer.

Fender are shit for dirty sounds & Marshall are duff for clean?

Yesterday I was told by a few good musicians that Marshall amps are crap for a clean sound & the Fender are even worst on dirty sounds, is this true? The thing is I wish to purchase an amp for no more than £180 but I want the best my money will buy. I have a fantastic digital rig from which I do most of my studio work for pc games and the like, but it isn’t portable. Plus I have some good pedals for over/dist etc. I play most kinds of music. All I want from an amp is some thing that’s loud enough for my studio room, but at a ‘push’ could be used to gig a small hall, ie a loud practice, starter amp. It is very important that the amp has a high quality clean sound, 2 channels & maybe an effects loop & CD in. The amps I have considered are the Marshall G50rcd, Laney Hcm60r. If anyone has heard, or have any opinion on them please tell me. Plus as you all know there are loads of amps to choose from. I only want something that sounds good for the money, so screw the make plus I can’t afford a tube amp. Please give me some amps to check up on. Please help, as I don’t wish to be left at the mercy of reviews & ads. Plus with these views I will know what to tryout in my local music shops. Thanks for your valuable time, all the best. Phil

As for your first question, the Marshall vs. Fender debate has been going on forever!! Personally, I am a huge Fender fan! In fact, aside from my effects, everything I own is Fender. Anyway, Marshall's clean tone isn't the greatest, it's just average; because Jim Marshall wanted to create a very high gain amp (and he certainly did!) that would just plain knock your socks off. Clean tones just don't do that. Now, Fender, on the other hand, has the greatest clean tone ever because that was Leo's goal. He originally wanted to just make it possible to hear the guitar when everyone else was playing too. So, they are two completely different amps that serve two completely different purposes. Fenders dirty tone is more of just a plain old overdrive than it is a huge crunchy sustain as in Marshall's case. As for the amp you should choose, you should play as many as you can, figure out what kind of tone than brings out your playing style and find an amp that fits the bill. I don't know how much money that is in U.S. currency so I really can't help you there, but trust you ears, and have fun.!!!!!!!!

The distortion will most likely come from a pedal or effect anyway, so the natural distortion of your amp shouldn't be too important. I swear by Fender amps. Ever since high school when one friend had a Marshall stack and another had a Fender, I knew which one I liked better. And I play 80% distortion using a BOSS Heavy Metal pedal. My Fender amp is the best I have ever heard. I am not a fan of other Fender products, but I swera by their amps.

A little history. Marshall are evolutionary descendants of the Fender Bassman head. Over the years I've played through all sorts of amps. You can't really recreate that big Marshall sound without a big Marshall, or without a bunch of expensive rack gear that makes it sound just the same for twice the price. That being said, about the only thing most Marshalls are good for is that one tone.

I use a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe for band practice and it's fine. It has plenty of gain and sustain. Of course it sounds nothing like a Marshall.

You might take a look at the JCM2000. It's supposed to have a good clean tone as well as awesome crunch.

My personal recommendation however is to go with a Mesa/Boogie. I've been using a Mark III Simulclass since 1993 and it's got awesome clean tone and awesome distortion. It also cost me $1200 back then, the new ones are closer to $2000 (I'm not going to take the time to convert that into Pounds).

I hope you find what you want.

Phil: I own a Fender Stage 100 head along/4x12 speaker cab. I use a Boss GT-5 for my effects processing, so any onboard jargon doesn't really impact me. If you are mainly going to do your processing with pedals, I'd go with a Fender solid-state. Great clean tone, and, if you're processing your sound anyway, it doesn't really matter what the onboard distortion is like.

True.Fenders were not designed to "break-up" like Marshalls.And Marshalls don't sound very good clean.For
gigs and club dates I use a Tech21 60.It's pretty loud,
I like the distortion and reverb.It's also very portable.The price is about $450.00.It does the job.

I am going to get on the Fender bandwagon too. I have played through lots of amps. (I ran a music store for a while) The Fender amps always seemed to give the best sound for the $. Check a few out with YOUR guitar. Good luck

What bullshit! Yah can't make those sort of generalisations especially when both manufacturers make so many diverse models.
I've got a Fender Prosonic and a Marshall JCM600.
I can get awesome dirty filth out of the Prosonic and nice smooth clean tones out of the JCM600.
I must admit that generally Fenders give better clean tones but Marshalls aren't shit for clean.
As far as Fenders giving shit dirty tones! Have you ever heard Neil Young's awesome filthy tones, he uses Fender.

well i don't know much about the debate my friend, but click onto www.piedog.com and you'll find the miraculous MG50RCD for only 175 pounds. I'm getting it soon. It's got excellent reviews. Harmony Central has lots of user reviews, and it scores very high.

HELP: gig with a 40-60w amp??

HEY,
im buying a new amp and i wanted to know if it is possible to play a gig-for about 200-250 people, with a 40 watt amp? i dont think i will be able to mike it either. the amps i was looking at buying were the Marshall JCM2000 dsl 401, or the hot rod deluxe, idont want to get them if their not load enough tho.
