Well, have you seen it?
First off, is it all original? If not start shaving money off. If it doesn't have the original PU's take even more off. Does it have a lot of flame in the finish? The more flame, the more $ it's worth.
Your friend's guitar is worth anywhere from $10K to $65 k depending on condition and originality. If it's mint maybe more....Take it to a music store and watch them either: A) shit twice and die or
B) try to shaft you out of it

I would recommend a Boss Blues Driver for the warm, overdriven stuff and an Electro-Harmonix Big Muff or the ProCo Rat for the big distortion effects. Also, for the Nirvana style, a good Chorus pedal. The Boss Chorus Ensemble is very cool. And for the RATM stuff, the Digitech Whammy pedal IS A MUST!!!. I hope this helps.

If it works well, and the tubes are OK (should play loud) Twins range from $450-$650. Remember, tubes cost$ to replace and can be a hassle to get, but the sound a Twin can get can be worth it. If you really want it, offer them less. $699 seems on the high side to me?? But I'm cheap.

The pickups are microphonic. You have 2 options: Replace them or have them wax potted. Wax potting is cheaper, especially if you are happy with the sound. Find a repair shop that will do this for you.

sus stands for suspended. A suspended chord replaces the third with a fourth, a sixth or a ninth(which is a 2nd an octave up.) They sound as if they are neither major nor minor. Like they are suspended. If you are familiar with Queensryche they use suspended chords quite a bit.
Tabs for some common sus chords(starting from low e):

i understand, when i was 14 there's noone outthere giving me advise on how to play a guitar.

1.how long it would take? one of my friend made it in 2 weeks to master all the basic rythm, and some of them never make it.
2.metalica use ESP guitars. however,gibson is more all rounded. at least u can play matal and hard rock.gibson epiphone sounds pretty ok now (relatively cheap)

i will recommend u to go for mutli-effect(rp-100,zoom505II....cheaper one), pedals is kinda expensive for a beginner, and u dont have enought experience to adjust the tone.

or just use the dist channer on the amp. it sounds pretty good also.

anyway, it's just my own opinion for a beginner...good luck.
