: I don't know much about pick-ups or anything and I've decided to get new ones, but I'm not sure what sort I'm supposed to get for a fuller sound with more "crunch" can anyone help me with that??

Hey i replaced a lipstick tube pickup with a Seymore Duncane pickup just about a month ago
and it sounds great, some routing and fabrication was needed but i had a pro do it and it was
one of the best guitar related investments i have ever made.

Any fan of trey's I'll be happy to pass some hints.
I use Dunlop sharp point 1.35 picks with very heavy gage strings. (.13-.56) The strings don't help with the speed picking, but the picks do. Also, I excercise my right hand by squeezing a rubber ball while sitting around. I learned this trick while I was a pitcher and noticed my picking became much more accurate and quick.
Now for the fun part. Try to learn, note for note various "difficult" solos AND rhythms. I tend to favor Death songs from Human and The Sound of Perserverence but Morbid Angel will do fine. Learn these in band situations so what you screw up, you can't just stop.
Learning Jazz voicings help due to the funny picking.

I dont know what a la Trey Azagoth is but I know one thing. Speed picking is in the elbow not the hand. Use heavy gauge pick and use the elbow. NO WRIST!!!!

Okay there are 2 considerations, if you just want to record in high quality use a sound blaster live value at £45, don't spend your £150 on the full live or platinum, they are the same card with the same synth but have 5.1 decoder. Trust me I have set up many studios & know. However what you must consider is, are you going to record vocal or guitar onto a seperate track whilst the sound card is playing the backing track? If you are then you need a full duplex card. Now let me say this very clearly no sound blaster card is full duplex. It may say so on the box, but what it doesn't say is that it only does this in shitty 8 bit, plus if you wish to add an effect ie an aural exciter or vocal harmonizer on the fly the latency is so long your ears & mouth will just go pare shaped. So this card is only good for recording 1 track at a time with no effects added on the fly. If I was you I would save you hard earned cash & buy a Yamaha sw1000xg which I have also fitted in many professional studios. In a nutshell it's the dogs bollocks. that depends on what type of wah u want. I have tried almost all kind oh wah, but it seems that only dunlop 535Q cry baby rules! this babe got 6 different setting of different wah. u can even control that wah level and variation level under the stomboxes( it seems to be the only drawback cos u need to turn the whole thing over and adjust,BUT as a engineer i know that design will ensure the best durability of the unit)

dont get some stupid wah with not much variation in wah level...cos we r (at least i am ) not reach enought to buy a wah and we cant hear clearly the difference b4 and afther using it.

I have the basic original regular 'ol Dunlop Crybaby, and I love it. They are only about $60 new. It's the classic wah sound with no gimmics, no nonsense. Just pure growling tone. I wouldn't get a used one because wah pedals tend to get a lot of abuse and they aren't that expensive new.

Amen Brother. Tone, or what ever you want to call it depends a great deal on how tasty the playing is. However, obviously those same flavourful licks will sound better or worse to some degree depending on the gear. We shouldn't send the message that you can buy tone.

Hmm.A difficult question.Tone quality is a subjective thing.What sounds good to you or I may sound like shit
to someone else.I think a lot of it depends on your ear
and musical influences,this will shape your perception
of tonal quality.Like Women(no disrespect) who want to look like Cindy Crawford,we strive to sound like our guitar heros,often in vain.Studio technology can change and re-arrange sounds tremendously,so it'almost impossible to get the same tone.Also, a lot of the tones we hear are usually accidents that sound good.My first instructor wouldn't teach me riffs or solos because he wanted me to sound like MYSELF.I don't have the fingers of Eddie V.,Ray Gomez,or Billy Gibbons.I can only try to understand where these dudes are coming from.In the end I think it's really about picking YOUR tones and style and being happy with our own sound.
