Is anyone aware of a guitar club in east central Connecticut? I am looking to get together with folks to sharpen my skills. Looking in the Norwich/Colchester area.

Thanks!

Soldano preamp + multieffects processor

Hi, what kind of Multieffect and Speakers would you use with a Soldano preamp. I don't want to mess with the tone as there is no FX loop and I have to hook the multifx in series after the preamp and before the power amp. thanks

Need help selecting tone woods.

I'm trying to emultate a Les Paul somewhat, but want a slighty fatter sound. Other than maple for the cap what other woods will produce a fat sound?

Thanks, Gad

Re: Need help selecting tone woods.

Mahogany with a Maple top.

Re: Need help selecting tone woods.

Hi,

Actually the Maple is used to counter the "fatness" of the Mahogany. Take a look at this site:

Re: Need help selecting tone woods.

Dear lord man you want something to sound fatter than a les paul. I think you need to check your pickups. A good pickup in a les paul with a decent that is all set up right should offer the fattest sound rock guitar has heard. Your techniique has a great deal to do with it. Also, getting rid of the maple (i.e. an all mohagany guitar) will offer a thicker sound.

May Jesus bless you

Loni what did you mean when u said this If all else fails, try playing your guitar on top of your barn during a lightning storm. You won't have to worry about strings any more...

A question...

Is it really easier, helpful or a good idea to learn to play on an acoustic guitar as opposed to electric (if you will be playing mostly rock/metal music)? I've been told both that you should start on acoustic no matter what and that it depends on the style of music you will be playing. I was just wondering what anyone else's opinions were. Thanks.

Re: A question...

When I got my first guitar,my mom wanted me to play acoustic first.I refused!!She dragged me,kicking and screaming to the music store. When we got there, she asked the salesman,"shouldn't he play acoustic first"??
The dude said,"why...I started on electric." I WAS SAVED!! Had she bought me the acoustic,it would've gathered dust in the closet. My point is,if you love electric music, then play electric guitar. It is true that acoustic guitar will harden your fingers, but thats old fashioned mumbo jumbo! In reverse, the more I learned on electric, the more I appreciated the Acoustic!
Good Luck

Re: A question...

I started on an acoustic myself, and bought my electric 6 months later. I still play the acoustic lots, and I'm pretty glad that I started with it. Learning on the high-action acoustic wasn't too easy (actually I haven't played any other guitar since that has that high an action). Starting with an electric wouldn't have suited me, but when I did buy one it was so much easier to play. Barre chords etc, were virtually effortless, so I could just focus on the fun lead bits that I wanted to learn. Also, if I started with an electric, it would have been more expensive, 'cause of the amp, etc. and when I bought an acoustic (which I certainly would have wanted to do) it would have been an awful lot harder and more frustrating. But that's just me. It's up to you, whether you want to start on Limp Bizkit and Papa Roach type music (or indeed any number of other bands and styles) or on songs that work well acousticly (with no effects, overdrive, distortion...), like REM, most of Blur's stuff, JJ72 (you'd be surprised)... loads. I'd *recommend* an acoustic because it really is a lot of fun, and most of the songs you'll learn will sound grand without any drums, bass and so on (with bands like Placebo or Muse the other instruments often play without the lead guitar). It's also easier to sing along with an acoustic guitar, at least for me. Do whatever's fun :).

Re: A question...

If you're going to be playing things on an electric guitar eventually then just start with that. They are different instruments and if you learn on one you will have to re-learn it on the other. It takes a little getting used to to play an electric if you start with an acoustic. Just start with what you want to play on.

Re: A question...

Ecks and Eddie are both right, if you can only afford one and want to play electric, then by all means start on one. That being said, playing acoustic will do a lot to make you a good guitar player. I've found it helpful to do most of my practicing on my flattop, it makes it seem as if the electric is easier to play. The best thing of course is to have both.

Re: A question...

I think it's good to have both an acoustic and an electric if you can afford it, because they can almost sound like two different instruments with the advantage that they're played the same way!
I started on an acoustic, and having taught guitar for over ten years I still feel that getting an acoustic to start learning on is best. Reasons - you can just grab an acoustic when the mood takes you, with no messing about with amps, leads etc. Also, an electric guitar (without distortion) tends to amplify mistakes
unmercifully, which can be a bit demoralising for a beginner... Finally, an acoustic's harder action will
tend to encourage better fretboard technique.
Let's face it, if somebody wanted you to play one at a party and you had to say 'ooh no sorry, I can only play an electric', they'd think you were a wimp!

You should buy a book. There are enough scales that having the book will help. after you have the book and you start looking at it you could try... http://www.zentao.com/guitar/theory/ this site is loaded as is guitarmain.com but you will need to do lot's of work on your own to get anyway on this instrument. Start really REALLY slow. Think melodically before you try to sound fast. content is much more important than speed. Listen to all the Al Dimiola that and John McLaughlin that you can. Vai and Satch aren't bad either.

PICK-UP SELECTOR SWITCH REPAIR

HOW HARD IS IT TO GET A SELECTOR SWITCH OUT OF AN
ARCH TOP GUITAR ? DO YOU HAVE TO REMOVE A PICK UP TO
GET THE SWITCH OUT?

Re: PICK-UP SELECTOR SWITCH REPAIR

It depends on what kind of guitar it is, but a lot of times, yes, you will need to remove a pickup to get to it.

Kay Guitar - 50's vintage

My father had a Kay guitar given to him in the late 50's. The wood used in its construction appears to be mahogany and maple. He was the second owner. We know it is a "Student" guitar, but we don't know what model. The guitar came with an Oahu amplifier which I also have. Question: is there a way I can locate the model number - is it on the guitar somewhere and I'm missing it? Also, what might something like this be worth today? It's been used very little and is in perfect great condition. Many thanks.

Re: Kay Guitar - 50's vintage

I have a 50's Kaye Acoustic guitar that I bought used in 1957 and also would like to know more about it. Mine also does not have any model number or serial number, but it sounds exactly like the one you have. It did not come with a AMP, but has the audio pickup, two knobs and the standard monoral jack. If you find out anything on these gutars, please pass the information along.

Thanks
Gary

Wood

How does poplar sound?

Re: Wood

Check this out

Poplar isn't listed cause it is a cheaper wood. It's tonal spectrum is close to Alder and Basswood.

Has anyone tried or heard anything about the new Mexican Hank Marvin Signature Strat?

tuning pegs

does anybody know where in l.a.can i get original tuning pegs (machine heads)for my celebrity ovation?

Re: tuning pegs

Check with www.musiciansfriend.com or www.stewmac.com

I'm not sure what they put on Ovations, but probably either Grovers or Schallers. If you have one of the originals left you might take a good close look at it.

From the back of the peghead, if the screw hole is below the hole for the peg it probably takes Grovers, if the screw hole is to the inside of the peg hole it probably takes Schallers.

WAS OZZIE REALLY TRANSEXUAL?

Hello dudes,
I'm looking to purchase a 8 inch amplifier. My choices now are a GFX-15 crate or a VOX V9159. The VOX sounds cool but I wasn't sure what the durability and upkeep is on it. It uses a vacuum tube and the crate uses pseudodigital sound production.
thankyou

Re: WAS OZZIE REALLY TRANSEXUAl?

It's Ozzy, Slappy.
