Phil B. is right on, don't waste what money you have on a $69 or $29 guitar, also you can buy an electric and start learning without an amp, plug it into your PC or stero, or whatever. PC tuners are free, or you can use a dialtone to tune from, or find a tuning fork at flea market, etc... as to a strap, sure you could come up with something to make one yourself, picks are cheap (not a buck apiece... for cheap ones, and you can 'make' your own too), also you don't need a gig bag or case to play, just take a little extra care when transporting it. So just be a little creative, focus on getting the best guitar you can afford, and you'll work out the 'details' as you go along.

Then their is shipping charges, around 150 in the end for a simple "inexpensive" guitar, yeah right, there is no way Im going to pay 150 dollars on a guitar thats not even that great. So I thought I'll just have to settle with acoustic, and I found a nice and cheap one at musicians friend for 29.99, I thought that was good, and since I didnt have to buy an amp I could afford it. Then, again, it said I needed a strap, another 12 bucks, then a bag thing, only this time I needed a hard one because acoustics are more fragile, 70 dollars, then picks, 10 bucks for 8, can't I just buy one for a buck, nope, you have to buy all of them. I know these are good prices when put with the other ones, but whether they are good prices or not, they are still TOO EXPENSIVE. Most guitars are in the thousands, because they are a certain brand, or once played by a famous person, or they are rare. I dont care who played it, or how many they made. If somebody famous played it, does that make my guitar sound any better, or me sound any better. I dont care how the guitar looks or if they are "collectors items" I just want a guitar, it doesnt even have to sound too great, I just want it to sound like a guitar. Everywhere I look it says I need all these accessories, tuners, etc. I know I dont need a tuner, I dont even know what they do. Most of these accessories I've never heard of, but I "have to have it" to play a guitar. Are these accessories really neccasary, and can find the neccasary accessories cheaper from some other site? To get the best bang for your buck, stay local! The internet can yield some fabulous bargains, but only if you have tons of knowledge. I've been playing guitar for almost 30 years and I won't buy anything on the internet.

I use local music stores because of one reason - I can try the stuff and return it if it isn't right. And they sell picks for LOTS less than a buck or more - more like a quarter if you buy five or more. Also, many music shops have guitar repairmen that will set up a guitar at no charge if you buy it at their store.

If a music store carries used stuff, they will get in good guitars at inexpensive prices. The trick is to be ready when they show up. The only way to do that is to play enough guitars to know how a good one feels. So try out some of the more expensive ones and get a feel for a good neck.

You might also watch, if you don't mind going there, local pawnshops. A lot of them overcharge for cheap guitars, but some don't. And if you're willing to dicker you can get some pretty good things.

For cheap guitars check out Washburn. Like the D-10 acoustic. They're decent and I've seem them for around $100. Also the Washburn, Aria, or Hamer Slammer electrics. I suspect most of these are made by Samick - another brand to check out. For a cheap amp a Peavey Rage 158 sounds great and can be had for under $100. And you can't get it on the Internet!

My electric is an old Washburn WS-4 Strat knockoff whic sounds fabulous. I paid $110 for it and haven't considered anything else. Of course I played over a dozen of them before I picked this one.

I don't want do disappoint you, but you forgot the guitar cable, to hook your guitar up to your amp!
It'll probably cost you another fortune.
Don't you feel kinda foolish?
The old blues guys had nothing. The managed to get themselves a guitar and learned to play.
No money, no tuner, no picks, no new strings..
Try selling your computer and buy a guitar, or just stay of it at all.

I found a guitar manufacturer from India(on this very sight) who was marketing very cheap stratocasters. Their pitch is that they don't have to pay a lot of labor. They may be good. I have found a few good guitars at yard sales, and fixed them up, for under a hundred dollars, but you really have to work to find them. I've been teaching for over twenty-five years now, and the best cheap guitar would probably be an ancient used Yamaha. Better yet, save up your money and get a Seagull for under $500.00. A good guitar will inspire your playing by being easy to play and pleasant sounding. I have a picture of this bush dude in Africa playing a homemade bass made out of a one gallon tin can. It was kind of cool. You never know, good guitars can be found cheap. I have bought two fenders for fifty bucks each, I just wish that I could do that every day.

tOO EXPENSIVE IS SUCH A RELATIVE TERM. I HAVE FOUND THAT MOST PEOPLE WHO BALK AT PAYING $500.00 OR MORE FOR A GUITAR WONT BAT AN EYE AT DROPPING A COUPLE OF GRAND FOR A DECENT SET OF GOLF CLUBS. I can't stay local. I live in a tiny town with only 1 music shop, and everything is over priced at that store, thats why I looked on the internet. In my little tiny town, their is a yard sale about once every 6 months, and when their is, I can't find any guitars, this town seems to be stuck on trumpets. the closest thing to a swap meet in this town is 2 stores in the same parking lot. I am pretty much stuck with the internet. I look in the paper for a guitar and I find one about every month and those are about 300 dollars, and everytime its the same ad, and it says "needs work". I even built a web site to earn money so I can buy a descent guitar (www.twistedsite.f2s.com) but it doesnt get much traffic. I am stuck with the internet...

Personally, I don't think you should be playing guitar. In fact, maybe you shouldn't drive because you can't find a high quality car for $237.

Look, you can't just slap together a bunch of wood, hook on some cat gut, and declare you have a guitar. It takes resources: some sort of craftsperson, a machine to do some woodwork, some wood, some strings, etc. Go to a cheap music store, buy an acoustic, they'll sell you a single pick - maybe even throw one in, don't bu a strap - play it sitting in a chair. Don't buy a case if it's not going to leave your house.

Now, learn some chords, get happy with it, then go out and buy a real guitar that you'll enjoy for a lifetime. You know what would be even better? Give away your old guitar to a promising student so that they don't have to go thru the pain you did.

As with anything good, there's a price to be paid. Enjoy it - don't fight it.

I'll assume you are serious about this subject matter.
$69 for a playable guitar of decent quality is as close to a steal as one can find. A guitar that's decently built (neck,finish,wood,pickups,electronics,tuning heads)
is meant to be an item that will last, sound decent, and play comfortably. THe Kramers on music-Yo however are decent entry level guitars. What can you get in todays market that has comparable construction for $69 ? Amps will run you around that too, minimally.
Keep in mind that If you get cheap stuff, you probably won't enjoy the instruments playability, sound and more-than-likely you'll not pursue the instrument of guitar. YOu can get a smokey practive amp for around 25. Of course if you like the sound of little transister radios, that's what you will have (at best). Nothing except a few picks will run you 2 bucks tho. You don't need a strap, you can play sitting down. You think guitar chords are expensive ?
Get decent digital cables that conduct sound for any audio feature. Monster cables will cost more than the guitar you think is "too expensive". Anything decent costs abit of money

Well we can all tell you dont know crap about guitars. Yes, you do need all off the accessories to play the guitar. So you dont know what a tuner is.
Well lets use our brain for a minute, it is what you tune your guitar with. You probably will have trouble
finding a 30 dollar electric, unless it is made of cardboard. If your not willing to pay 150 for a guitar,
you dont need to play one. Oh yeah, if you learn on an
acoustic it will be easier to play an electric.

Thats not true at all. I have been playing the guitar for 8 years, and i dont have all of those things. Tuners are not necessary, picks arent if you know how to play good, and things such as straps and bags are just optional. I play all types of music, and many of the so called "necessities" are not needed if you know what you are doing. I agree that picks can be handy sometimes, and straps can be useful, but nothing is necessary except for a complete guitar with strigns, and two hands to play it.

Most of these accessories I've never heard of, but I "have to have it" to play a guitar. Are these accessories really neccasary, and can find the neccasary accessories cheaper from some other site? Im like you, in certian ways, i recently took up the guitar about 3 moths ago, i started on a £30 ($60ish) guitar (acoustic) which is ok but hard to play notes like an F as cheap guitars are made cheaply. I found this flamenco guitar (small version of an acoustic, with nice wide neck)which cost £13 ($20ish)(from a junk yard!!!!, i found out its worth £700 ($1400ish) i had to resore it mind (£300). But the best way to get a guitar cheaply, which by the way is the compleatly wrong way to look at it, is from a guitar shop!, they can usally give you a good deal on a good second hand guitar which means no shipping costs. Use your brain in buying guitars but the best guitar for your money, save like hell, dont worry on types of strings or straps unless you wanna learn standing up??!!. Good tip,,,Grow your thumb nail and the others a bit longer, and cut the nails on your non strumming hand down and file them. Picks can be brought from guitar/music shops seperatly, if your real broke use your imagination, a coin a old bit of hard plastic, ie a smashed cd case, u can file them in to shapes if you like or if you want to be real weird get a pack of strong false finger nails or your mums/sisters etc old ones (clean if possible) you can then paint them for your own pleasure wich also gives them extra strength. So basiclly keep your eye open for a second hand guitar from someone who dosnt know what there selling, so reaserch guitars, read up etc. I dont know what others say, but if you want to learn acoustic buy and prictice on one, likewize with electric, buy one and practice on it i personnely wouldnt learn the acoustic then play the electric. Also if you wanna learn on the cheap (self talt) type in guitar lessons or guitar tutorials in the net, practice your chords (as many many as possible) and maybe practice some easy tabs of songs you recognise, i found that after learnin a basic A B C D E (F was too hard)i was getting bord but one day, magiclly i learnt an F , Fmin , Gmin and some others and aloth of hard stuff became a lot more simple, i think its coz it streches your fingers more and gives extra stregnth in ur hand as your barreing, i hope i havnt woffled to much so far, but its always a bad idea to buy stuff that you dont know what it dose, tuning just takes practice, and big names like "Fender", "gibson", or "CJ matin and co" will always be dear coz they are quality, have qualitly wood, and the sound properties of them are of high quality. Do not ever buy the cheapest, buy the most exspensive piece of equiptment you can find but make sure you know why its expensive (reasrch) guitars are more complicated than you think, and just coz they may look simular platinum looks like silver and shiny yellow looks like gold so you see what im saying, somthing good will also last you a long time. Or (nearly finished) buy your $30 dollor or what ever electric guitar, then save like mad, get a second job, rob old ladies do what evr it takes to raise like $2000 dollors and buy the best gibson you can get for your mony, then play a little riff with your shitty guitar then with the good one preferably on a goold old powerfull marshal amp and tell me you dont feel the difference, if you dont take the expensive one back and you will be $2000 dollors richer.

Yes. I'm very sorry to ruin your day: But I have to warn you that you may also need to make another investment: A Guitar pick. They are used to get sounds out of your guitar, so probably you will need at least one.

I'm afraid this terrible news can discourage you from becoming the artist we all want you to be. May be the world is about to lose you as a musician. Life can be this cruel sometimes. Sorry, again, but I just couldn't hide the truth any longer...

Hey dude you dont have 2 worry about all those starps and crap like that - all you need for an acoustic guitar is the guitar. You dont need a case if you treat it nicely. A tuner may be usefuul but its not a necessity. Picks are a good thing but its possibke to learn with your hands. SO unless u are becomeing a pro musician within the next month you dont need most of the stuff. With an electric guitar you need the guitar , the amp , and a patch cord- a patch cord is just the cord that attacthes the guitar to teh amp. You cant find very many half decent electric guitars for under 100$ but for around 120$ you can get a nice peavy raptor which is just a beginner electric. you can find if u look around for a but 30$ amps that are pretts small and can fit in your pocket- another alternative is to look at used amps - most are in pretty good shape and are way cheaper. Unless you have a very good natural ear then you most definatley need a tuner to keep your Guitar in tune. Or, In your case, you could have a good rant at something we all know and hate but you have to take it over the top. Why don't you give up playing the guitar becasue if you take that attitude then you will be smashing your guitar on the walls before you even pick up a pick.

PS: A tuner shows you the pitch and tone of your guitar so that you can change it to make it sound like it should

However, they are sometimes set a tone lower [slightly detuning one of the strings of some/all of the pairs, i think is what it means], and the tuning of each pair of strings varies. The 1st and 2nd strings [pairs] are tuned in "unison", giving identical notes of the same pitch; the other four pairs are each tuned to give the same notes but an octave apart.

Of course, this standard tuning is not the only way a guitar can be tuned. There are many variations and alternatives which might be better suited to a particular tune or style, or which might be used to create a specific sort of "sound".

The Guitar Handbook - Ralph Denyer</b>

1st strings = E+E (same octave)
2nd strings = B+B (same octave)
3rd strings = G+G (one octave apart)
4th strings = D+D (one octave apart)
5th strings = A+A (one octave apart)
6th strings = E+E (one octave apart)

for pairs 3 through 6, one string should be much thinner than the other 'standard' string (as of a six-string guitar). the thinner one.. the book doesn't really say, but most likely, that is the one that should be an octave difference.. a higher octave most likely.

i don't own a 12-string guitar.. nor have ever tuned one.. so, i just quoted this from a book.

you're a lucky bugger having one of those given to you!
I've fancied a 12 for years, but haven't had an excuse to get one because I can add chorus to my strat and get the same sound through the amp, but I really fancy an electro-acoustic 12 with a cut-away body. It would be magic for folksy stuff, but it can wait until after I treat myself to an electric violin, hopefully before the end of the year.

I love the tone of the JCM 800 and the distortion is awesome but its not heavy enough with just the amp distortin alone. Can anybody help me out with what good pedals to use or what tubes to replace with? i tried using a r2du RAT rackmount but its hella noisy and sounds ugly. the metal zone sucks also and was wondering if its good to use a distorion pedal on the dirty chanel?

You could use a pedal on the overdrive channel but that will get you more feedback than you asked for. As far as I know you'd best buy a pretty decent pedal and use that on the clean channel only. Always works best. Anyhoe, you do not necessarily need a huge wall of distortion to make for a cool punk guitar.... Or do you? Sounds OK on LP/CD but live it will get lost in the overall sound. Try some early HC bands for cool guitar sounds. Good luck.

Hmm.I'm not really into Punk-Rock,but why not try the Ibanez Smash-box.If it has too much gain,try to get an Ibanez SM-9!Great tone,can get buzzy if you need it. For rythym,it's almost as good as the Chandler.

try and use an overdrive pedal rather than a distortion....tube screamers (from ibanez) are good for this

dude-
you're used to listening to artificially-clipped transistor type distortion. don't say you "really love the tone of the JCM 800 and the distortion is awesome" when what you really mean is " i look cool with a Marshall, but i don't like the sound".
use a pedal for that crisp thick crunch, and set your amp clean. i have a Korg 2-program distortion pedal that i think is fantastic. when you input a pedal-clipped signal into a tube gain channel it just doesn't really work. what i say is sell the JCM 800 to someone who can dig it and buy yourself a Peavy or Crate transistor with the big proceeds....but first put on "Back In Black" and tell me you don't like your Marshall's sound. you should be able to dial that sound in perfectly with the 800, even with a strat(thats my setup).
remember, the poor craftsman blames his tools. many people underestimate the effect that technique can have on actual tone. a good guitar player adjusts his attack and touch when playing different guitars through different setups. listen hard to your sound, side by side with a record, and try to analyze the differences: amount of distortion, and midrange characteristics.
one more thing:the first thing everyone says is "get humbuckers". when you are playing through a good distortion effect, it doesn't matter how low the output of your pickups is. in fact, single coils can add more complex dimensions to the final distorted tone, and can sound better than humbuckers....
