i need a new sound
i've been playing for 17 years and i'm getting tired of my sound. i'm playing a charvel coustom through a
GK 100RL with a 4x12 coutom made bottom from the 80's. i want phat tones, clean scream'n leads and versatility.
i'm in a rut where should i start
Re: i need a new sound
try a different amp, or even guitar, but if you love your gear try a new pickup in your guitar, even setting the tone controls differently could be a start, it depends what sound your after, i use a starfield guitar with a seymour duncan holdsworth pick up and a tech 21 trademark 6o amp. i used to own a les paul standard and a selmer valve amp. i got bored with my sound and a change of gear did it for me. good luck. tom glenn
Re: i need a new sound
I concur, buy a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier. You'll never go back. It's amazing the range of sounds you can get just by switching guitars. I use a Strat for Classic rock and an ESP for Metal. Can't beat the boogie.
Re: i need a new sound
The same advice I give everybody. Buy a Mesa Boogie, they're the best amps ever.

Gibson Les Paul Studio
I recently saw a posting that exclaimed that the Gibson Les Paul Studio is stupid. There was no explanation as to why. Does anyone have opinions on this guitar? I plan on purchasing one and would really like to know. I know the technical packaging, but haven't seen any reviews on it's tone and playability.
Re: Gibson Les Paul Studio
Well, I own an old Gibson Les Paul and you will find that most Gibson has incredibile sustain; they definitely do not have the tonal quality of a Stratocaster, but the Les Paul are great for jazz chording to Rhythm Guitar. Make sure your bridge is adjusted right. Mine is adjustable and so are the tuning pegs on the bridge: nice features to have. Make sure you find the right strings for it to: don't stray away too far to extra light because the guitar is very sensitive about its strings
Re: Gibson Les Paul Studio
It is a fine guitar. I bought one a few months ago and I love it. They are a great value and
are worth the money. Mine doesn't play as well as the more expensive LP's, but it still plays
beautifully and the tone is just as good to me as any Les Paul, expensive or not. I can't tell
any difference in tone. It's essentially a Standard Les Paul without binding. The body is just
"put together". You know how some have the white lines around the edges? The studio
doesn't have that, which actually makes it look really cool. Anyway, there are some thoughts.
Re: Gibson Les Paul Studio
granted the studios are a lesser quality of wood...hence the painted bodies, and they are not bound edges....thats what makes a LP expensive, not what makes it play nicely or sound great...I decided on a studio about 10 years ago after playing hundreds of LPs(standars, customs, and studios)it had the wine stain where you can see the wood and it played better than almost any other that I had touched......they are NOT all the same... take your time and find the one that suits you
Re: Gibson Les Paul Studio
Get an older one, 98' and earlier I think, the new ones are made cheaper, and about a quarter of an inch of would is "shaved off" the back making the body thinner and affecting the tone. They also cost alot more now, I just bought a mint condition 97 studio for 740.00 on ebay. TONE AND SUSTAIN AND BANG FOR THE BUCK BABY!!!
Re: Gibson Les Paul Studio
I have owned a Les Paul studio for a few years now, and love it. I agree with whoever said that not all of them are the same. I played alot of them, and I can't say I've ever played one that I like as much as mine. (An '86 wine-red jewel finish with PRS dragon pickups) But like, at the store there were two of them, identical in year, color, but the one I picked out was far better set-up, (and I did prefer the different pickups) I don't know if it was just the set-up, but it really did "feel" better than the other one. Ya, just shop around like you were picking out the guitar to bear your children and you shouldn't go wrong.

How to record & wright my music with my acustic guitar on my PC?
I have a guitar and a PC, how could I record and write my music in a simple manner? Do I need only a program or something else? Many thanks for your help!
Re: How to record & wright my music with my acustic guitar on my PC?
The thing to do is to search for multitrack recorders: they are your best bet for recording, as for writing, as in transcribing, you will likely want to consider a separate piece of software.. I have not reached that stage of transcribing, get a MIDI guitar and it should do it automatically, but I have an Acoustic Fender with a Seymour Duncan pickup with volume controls and it comes in handy for tonal additions and bring the volume up for recording; get a $30-40 microphone at Radio Shack and a 1/4" to 1/8" converted and plug it into your input jack (microphone jack) on the back of your PC's soundcard; place the microphone near an amp and that will really work, or you can place the microphone near the soundboard of your guitar, which can be difficult for volume at times, as you move the guitar around; some say that the latter sounds the best...
Re: How to record & wright my music with my acustic guitar on my PC?
so i dont need a interface i just need a mic and software

Find this Guitarist
I am looking for more information on a guitarist called Red Volkshart who plays lead for Merle Haggard? He plays an old Fender with old old amp and
pickup. He copies licks and ditties from other famous players and gives them the "Fender" sound that evidently is quite unique and can be recognized by guitarists. He was on PBS last week in Oklahoma network. He has several albums of his own, but trying to make sure I have the spelling right and if any of you have ever heard of him??
Re: Find this Guitarist
It's spelled Volkaert. He's a great guitarist. Look him up on www.allmusic.com
You can probably find his albums at CDNow or www.ubl.com or better yet, use the shopping feature on Yahoo and you can compare prices and get 'em cheap.

Jazz Guitar Pickups
I am looking for a sweet L5 sound. I am considering a '57 PAF Rissue Classic in the neck position. Anyone have an opinion on set of Jazz pick ups for an L5 style guitar? Thanks.
Re: Jazz Guitar Pickups
The '57 PAF would work fine. Just buy a passive pickup that's not too hot and it'll get that smoky sound. Seymour Duncan makes nice ones, or you can also try a Kent Armstrong, they have a really good tone and are less money than the Duncans.

If it is a 1960 Gibson LP RI Classic in near new shape, $700 is a good price. If you want to sell, let me know.

EMG active and my EFX!!!!!!!!
I m thinking of changing the pickups on my LTD to EMG60(neck) and EMG85(bridge).
The problem is.....will it be compatible with the efx processor i'm using now?Currently,I m using Digitech RP20 and will the low impedence output of the pickup overload the high impedence input of the processor? What could be the worst result? Is there any way to check if it's suitable b4 i invest in the pickups?
