The Guitar Center is only one of many places that have decent guitars that are reasonably priced. Check the stores around you and you should find some. For a beginner, I would recommend a "middle-of-the-road" acoustic. Not something that is too expensive, and not the cheapest one you can find. I would say somewhere around $200-$300 should be o.k. The reason I say that one should avoid the cheapest thing around is because it WILL completely turn you off to the guitar. It will give you nothing but trouble. Yamaha makes some great beginner acoustics, check those out. I hope this helps, and good luck! Have fun too.

Yes, strat trems are not made for heavy diving, better stay out of the water (mr hendrix had this problem also as you can hear on his live recordings..)
there are a few solutions though if you insist on kamikaze exercises:
1.Replace the bridge with Floyd Rose.
2.Replace the tuners with locking tuners.
3.Replace the nut with a graph tech one.
4.Buy a locking nut guitar.

Problem, of course is the nut. Probably the spacing is too narrow for the strings width. Strings will get stuck once the tension is released but will return to their original position when you bend them after trem work. If you don't like all of the solutions, sand the nut a little more so the strings can freely move, oil it (or use graph tech powder) once in a while and learn to, after a down movement with the trem, to finish with a short up movement so the strings can return to their original position.

What kind of numbers were they? Roman numeral, or digit. My guess is that somewhere at the beginning the key of the song was given and the numbers you see represent the chords in the different degrees of the key scale. Let's say the song was written in the key of D Major and you see a "1" or a "I" and then you see a "5" or a "V" and then you see a "2" or a "ii". The numbers stand for a D major chord, an A major chord, and an E minor chord, respectively.

Those humbuckers are lo-impedence JCB-1 pickups and you can get them from Epiphone currently, or of course at ebay and the usual suspect guitar web sites.

Make sure you have the matching lo-impedence switch . . or the guitar is garbage and you might as well mail it to me where I will put it out of it's misery

Put the Capo on the 2nd fret, and pretend that it's the nut...play a regular C chord shape, just like you would without the Capo, you're just gonna play two frets higher than normal. It makes it easier to transpose things. When the music tells you to Capo on 2 and then play a C chord, you PLAY a C, but because the Capo is there, it's actually a D chord (one whole step higher), if you put the Capo on the 3rd fret it becomes a D# (you can also call it an E flat, it's the same thing).
