speaker advise..15"...?
Hi,
I have an original 64 deluxe reverb with a mod done to it..i.e x2 extra valves, increasing the output stage to 40 watts, the spk in it is a H.H spk @ 80watts. I use for effects an original ts 808 overdrive
and an original 64 "L" series stratocaster using....
11-52 strings @ Eb.
I am considering an extention box with a 15" spk.
at present the sound still brakes up just a little too much...
Question...will a 15" spk box give a bigger bottom end, and help to retain string clarity, without loosing sustain..? or 2x12"..?...4x12"..?
What brands of spks..and the wattage.
for a 15" spk a Weber California C15CA.@ 80watts has been suggested...?
My ideal sound is... Stevie Ray Vaughan's sound...!
Any advice would be most helpful...cheers..!!

Gretsch G400
After 20+ years of wanting to learn I am finally taking lessons at a local community college, using a borrowed guitar. I will buy a guitar eventually and would like the looks of the Gretsch G400. I would try anything before I buy but has anyone bought a Gretsch G400 and of so, do you like it? How much did it cost and where is it made. Thanks, Rick
info on LYS guitar?
I recently purchased an lys L-10 steel string acoustic and was wondering whether anyone knows anything about it. I picked it up for about $200 US and really like the sound and feel of it.
Any information would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

Re: info on LYS guitar?
your lys guitar was handmade in Quebec Canada. It's considered a great guitar for it's workmanship and it's sound. but I don't know the value. right now I myself am trying to find out the value of my own lys guitar.
Re: info on LYS guitar?
I have one also, its very nice and sounds great. Not sure of the numbers or value. It was given to me by someone who couldn't sell it in a pawn shop because no one knew what it was.
Re: info on LYS guitar?
I've got a Lys L-50 seriel No 16046 don't know much more than what's already been said except that they are quality instruments. I'd love to know more.
Re: info on LYS guitar?
According to a couple of places, these were built in the same factory as Godin and Seagull, but discontinued in 1985.

EMG on ibanez?
hello there!
i have bought ibanez rg270dx,and now day by day i discover that their powersound pickups just sucks,i mean they are far from powersound and the magnets begin to rust.i have heard that EMG,expecially 81 set are the best pickups for metal music.
what do you think if i will endorse my ibanez with these pickups, does it fit anyway and what will i get fro such combination?i need advice from someone who at least thought of this idea or tried.
thanks
Re: EMG on ibanez?
EMG pick ups are a great tight sounding pick up for metal stuff and are used by the likes of Mettalica. You need to be aware that they are active pickups and need a 9v battery to operate. This means that you can't just stick EMG pickups into your guitar like you can with most other brands. The will need to be proffesionaly installed as a hole will need to be routed into the body of your guitar in order to accommidate the battery compartment. This can be major surgery and needs to be done properly. The EMG 81's do sound good though. Hope this helps.
Re: EMG on ibanez?
There ae two types of EMG pick ups available, and they both sound good. The first active (using a battery) will be less noisy and should give higher output, but yes the battery can go when you least expect it.
The second are standard passive (no battery) EMG Select pick ups which I use in a lot of my guitars (and they sound great -- especially if you've got a kiler amp!). They are epoxy sealed rather than wax-potted, and enclosed in a clean black plastic cover, and they are very reasonably priced too.
You can see these at my web site at:

Re: EMG on ibanez?
I would strongly recommend avoiding the EMG's and staying with passive pickups. The Seymore Duncan JB seems to be the pickup of choice among many, many hard rock and metal players. I prefer the sound of passive pickups. And I hate the thought of a battery crapping out on me when I least expect it!
Also check out http://www.dimarzio.com/ and look at the Tone Zone, Super 3 or the Evolution. My favorite pickup is the DiMarzio PAF Pro. It sounds great for hard rock, but it doesn't have the super high output you seem to be looking for.
Good Luck

I have an rg270dx also and I put a gibson 57' classic plus in the bridge position, the guitar sounds incredible
Also, powersound pickups don't sound bad at all. What kind of amp do you have? I run my ibanez through a marshall
half stack with 9 pedals. Maybe your amps is the problem. I am currently getting a Gibson Les Paul
and I am going to put EMG 81 in the bridge and 85 in the neck because as you stated, they are the best. But,
If you do anything, upgrade to a better amp or a higher end guitar for your tone problem. You know that your
"Foyd Rose" on that thing isn't a real Floyd Rose and it only has the name because Ibanez bought the patent.
Put two more springs in the back of your tremolo system for your tuning problems
and it will stay in tune better (they cost about $3). Good Luck

I just bought a emg 707 active pick up for my 7 string ibanez, and yes, i'm looking at a little bit of body work, but nothing too serious, the emg is a little too big for the opening so i'll grind the opening to give it the clearence it needs. as far as the 9 volt battery, that will fit nicely in wiring cavity. so yeah, it's gonna take some work but i think it'll be worth it, and it shouldn't be too difficult.
Totally Clueless Newbie
Ok, Assuming I've never touched a guitar IN MY LIFE:
I want to start learning to play (i'll probably buy guitars for dummies or something). Big question:
Is it really necessary to start off with an accoustic or doesn't it matter? For example, the first things I would learn, can they be done on an electric guitar?
I would really rather only spend my money on an electric instead of accoustic, then electric later.
Re: Totally Clueless Newbie
I have never owned an accoustic in my life so the short answer is yes you can start out on electric. The main reasons behind owning an accoustic first is that the strings are most often a little further apart than on an electric which makes chord work just a little easier for the beginner to come to terms with. Also you don't need an amp. So the cost can be less. Lets face it, learning guitar takes dedication and hard work and if you give up after a few weeks or months then you have just wasted a lot of money. A cheap accoustic can cut this cost down.
Re: Totally Clueless Newbie
hi clueless!!!
you are right go on electric,it's much more easier to play on it.there are more accessable frets, thin and flat neck, easier for tunning compact ,comnfort, but a lot of weight also things like distortion effects and...you don't have to buy an amp-use your stereo system through a cabel with not expensive ibanez distortion pedal.
good luck!!!
rock on!!!
Re: Totally Clueless Newbie
Starting on electric is fine. It's a lot more fun and you can do crazy things with electric. If my mom bought me an acoustic(1977),it'll still be in the closet. As I matured,I eventually bought an acoustic!
Good Luck
Re: Totally Clueless Newbie
:start with an electric its alot easier to play so you will enjoy it more and stick with it.

With Limp Bizkit and Papa Roach as influences, you probably shouldn't be playing guitar in the first place, so just give up already and do something useful...

electric guitar questions
Hey all,
Self-taught guitar player here. Learned tabs on an acoustic but recently bought a cheap electric for learning purposes. I have no money to spare for lessons, and some of my friends told me that I wouldn't need lessons to just practice. One particular friend said to learn scales instead of just tablature, but (being dense as far as music goes) I don't really know what that means... I really want to learn to play right. I am dedicated, I've learned fingerstyle on my acoustic pretty decently, but I want to understand music too. Okay, to the point, any books to recommend or sites or anything that will help me out???
:( Sorry about the babbling. :)

Re: electric guitar questions
You couldn't learn scales on the acoustic ?? there are a million guitar sites online... search a little till you find one you like, and get or copy a bokk like "Chords and scales for guitar", then you have a hardcopy reference for almost all chords/scales/modes.

Re: electric guitar questions
Tabs are not really scales in pure form. They are phrases built on these scales.By learning the scales you'll be able to build your own riffs and phases. Also,
you'll see the reference point of other guitar riffs. As
far as lessons...get them if you can! Usually, people who take lessons progress faster than those who don't.
There's lots of books out there.Pick some that you can relate to and understand.Take music course if available.Start with the basics and work up from there.
Oh...you babble nicely.
Good Luck
Re: electric guitar questions
Carlos Santana once said that birds don't read music and they're good musicians. Lots of good guitarists (like Carlos) don't. They feel what sounds right. Learning theory and scales and things is really useful but you don't HAVE to to be a good musician. Lots of it will come to you anyway. The point is, there's no RIGHT way to play or learn to play. Do what you want and learn what and how you want and enjoy yourself. Musicians play, they don't work.
Re: electric guitar questions
See, it's responses like this and practically every other one that lead people to believe that there is no RIGHT way to do anything when it comes to music. And you wonder why people get hung-up on three-chord, bubblegum punk songs and can't progress any further. There IS a right way to play and learn and develop your technique.

Phil is correct. While lots of guitarists do not read music, you can still learn theory anyway. Some folks I know suggest the lessons at guitar.com. And MOST of the time, when you ask questions, MOST guitarists are usually pretty helpful.
One of the responses to your question also pointed out that if you took lessons you would progress faster. I know you don't have any money for it right now, fortunately there's stuff on line (and some of the other folks responding gave some URL's.)
Remember to go slow and be patient with yourself and with the guitar. If you are websurfing for sites with lessons, make sure you cover the basics, even if it seems a bit boring at first - you'll be grateful later on down the road.
good luck and let us know how you are doing.

guitars mex. vrs. american.
what is the differnce between a mex. fender vrs. an american fender?
Re: guitars mex. vrs. american.
: what is the differnce between a mex. fender vrs. an american fender?
mex fenders usually goes with dimarzzio pickups have floyd[licensed] also expensive not like korean.anyway i think mexican strat stand pretty good and designed for music of 60's.
Re: guitars mex. vrs. american.
1: Lots of money 2: some of the parts aren't as good quality. Having said that, some Mex. guitars are excellent, even better than some American ones but generally the U.S. ones are better.
Re: guitars mex. vrs. american.
OK, good question. First, Mexican Fenders are made in Ensenada, Mexico. The wood, hardware, and general manufacturing quality is not as good. They don't have Dimarzio's in them, they have Fender standard pickups, either single coil or humbucking (depending on the model), and they don't all have Floyd Licensed bridges, most of them have the Fender Standard bridge. They aren't nearly as pricey as the USA's. They aren't bad though, they are great for a starter electric, but I wouldn't stick with one as my playing progressed. Oh, and the tone and tuning stability isn't that great either. The Americans are, by far, the best. They are made in Corona, California using high quality wood, hardware and manufacturing processes. They come stock with the Fender Delta-Tone pickups (which are absolutely awesome) and the tone is incredible. They are more expensive because of the quality that goes into them. I've got two American Standard Strats and I wouldn't play anything else, except maybe an American Standard Tele. Anyway, that's the main difference between the two. The Mexi's aren't bad, but the USA's are the best.

Travel Guitars
Can anyone recommend a travel guitar metal-strung preferably electro-acoustique which does not cost a fortune
Re: Travel Guitars
I guess it depends on what you consider a "furtune", but the problem with travel guitars is that they involve almost the same amount of works as regular ones to build.
I made one (for my own use), although it is a solid body electric with a single pick up, and when I did the costing on it, I was shocked to learn that it did not cost much less that a regular axe.
I don't offer them on my web site as most players are more interested in full size regular axes. If anybody is interested, I would certainly work out a price for them (but I don't see doing one for any less than about $500.oo Canadian).

Elec guitar sales
Are there any good sites on the net for new and second hand elec guitar sales. Thanks.
Re: Elec guitar sales
eBay.com, probally the biggest, use google and search as there are music only auction sites (I can't recall names right now, and I always end up at aBay anyways), and search classifieds (net and newspaper), I've gotten some good deals out of 'newspaper' ads found on the net.
