your lys guitar was handmade in Quebec Canada. It's considered a great guitar for it's workmanship and it's sound. but I don't know the value. right now I myself am trying to find out the value of my own lys guitar.

EMG pick ups are a great tight sounding pick up for metal stuff and are used by the likes of Mettalica. You need to be aware that they are active pickups and need a 9v battery to operate. This means that you can't just stick EMG pickups into your guitar like you can with most other brands. The will need to be proffesionaly installed as a hole will need to be routed into the body of your guitar in order to accommidate the battery compartment. This can be major surgery and needs to be done properly. The EMG 81's do sound good though. Hope this helps.

I would strongly recommend avoiding the EMG's and staying with passive pickups. The Seymore Duncan JB seems to be the pickup of choice among many, many hard rock and metal players. I prefer the sound of passive pickups. And I hate the thought of a battery crapping out on me when I least expect it!

Also check out http://www.dimarzio.com/ and look at the Tone Zone, Super 3 or the Evolution. My favorite pickup is the DiMarzio PAF Pro. It sounds great for hard rock, but it doesn't have the super high output you seem to be looking for.

I just bought a emg 707 active pick up for my 7 string ibanez, and yes, i'm looking at a little bit of body work, but nothing too serious, the emg is a little too big for the opening so i'll grind the opening to give it the clearence it needs. as far as the 9 volt battery, that will fit nicely in wiring cavity. so yeah, it's gonna take some work but i think it'll be worth it, and it shouldn't be too difficult.

I have never owned an accoustic in my life so the short answer is yes you can start out on electric. The main reasons behind owning an accoustic first is that the strings are most often a little further apart than on an electric which makes chord work just a little easier for the beginner to come to terms with. Also you don't need an amp. So the cost can be less. Lets face it, learning guitar takes dedication and hard work and if you give up after a few weeks or months then you have just wasted a lot of money. A cheap accoustic can cut this cost down.

Starting on electric is fine.It's a lot more fun and you can do crazy things with electric.If my mom bought me an acoustic(1977),it'll still be in the closet.As I matured,I eventually bought an acoustic!

: Self-taught guitar player here. Learned tabs on an acoustic but recently bought a cheap electric for learning purposes. I have no money to spare for lessons, and some of my friends told me that I wouldn't need lessons to just practice. One particular friend said to learn scales instead of just tablature, but (being dense as far as music goes) I don't really know what that means... I really want to learn to play right. I am dedicated, I've learned fingerstyle on my acoustic pretty decently, but I want to understand music too. Okay, to the point, any books to recommend or sites or anything that will help me out???

Tabs are not really scales in pure form.They are phrases built on these scales.By learning the scales you'll be able to build your own riffs and phases.Also,
you'll see the reference point of other guitar riffs.As
far as lessons...get them if you can! Usually,people who take lessons progress faster than those who don't.
There's lots of books out there.Pick some that you can relate to and understand.Take music course if available.Start with the basics and work up from there.

mex fenders usually goes with dimarzzio pickups have floyd[licensed] also expensive not like korean.anyway i think mexican strat stand pretty good and designed for music of 60's.

OK, good question. First, Mexican Fenders are made in Ensenada, Mexico. The wood, hardware, and general manufacturing quality is not as good. They don't have Dimarzio's in them, they have Fender standard pickups, either single coil or humbucking (depending on the model), and they don't all have Floyd Licensed bridges, most of them have the Fender Standard bridge. They aren't nearly as pricey as the USA's. They aren't bad though, they are great for a starter electric, but I wouldn't stick with one as my playing progressed. Oh, and the tone and tuning stability isn't that great either. The Americans are, by far, the best. They are made in Corona, California using high quality wood, hardware and manufacturing processes. They come stock with the Fender Delta-Tone pickups (which are absolutely awesome) and the tone is incredible. They are more expensive because of the quality that goes into them. I've got two American Standard Strats and I wouldn't play anything else, except maybe an American Standard Tele. Anyway, that's the main difference between the two. The Mexi's aren't bad, but the USA's are the best.

I guess it depends on what you consider a "furtune", but the problem with travel guitars is that they involve almost the same amount of works as regular ones to build.
I made one (for my own use), although it is a solid body electric with a single pick up, and when I did the costing on it, I was shocked to learn that it did not cost much less that a regular axe.
I don't offer them on my web site as most players are more interested in full size regular axes. If anybody is interested, I would certainly work out a price for them (but I don't see doing one for any less than about $500.oo Canadian).

eBay.com, probally the biggest, use google and search as there are music only auction sites (I can't recall names right now, and I always end up at aBay anyways), and search classifieds (net and newspaper), I've gotten some good deals out of 'newspaper' ads found on the net.
