Re: whammy bar
: How does a whammy bar work? How does it bend the notes?
: please help!
Gee.... let me try to put it simple. On an ordinary guitar, the strings are attached on a fixed bridge. A Whammy bar is in fact a floating bridge. U attach the strings to the bridge and the bridge can sort of rotate backward and forward, by pulling the whammy-bar. Sort of like a single sided see-saw.
cheers !
Re: whammy bar
Check out my guitar tips at:

There you'll find tips on setting it up, and these will probably help you understand better what's going on.

Guitar shape
Dear anybody.
I am curious about the shape of guitar body, especially the accoustic one : why does guitar have shape like torso ? Why not just round shape like mandolin or banjo ? Is there any relationship between shape and the sound produced ? Any explanation will be appreciated. Thanks.

Too bad!
Re: Guitar shape
This is just a guess but it might be ergonomic, that is, it's because you get a large size box to make the sound and you can still sit it on your knee. Otherwise maybe it's because men designed them and we like curvy things 'cuz we're all pervies. I dunno...
Re: Guitar shape
especially the accoustic one : why does guitar have shape like torso ?
Hi, I'll try to answer your questions. The guitar traces back a long way, but the earliest record of having the waisted (torso) shape is around 1170 BCE - it's not exactly a guitar, it's a Hittite lute. The picture that I saw looked a lot like a Baroque guitar.
The guitarra latina, which arose from around 300 BCE to 1200, also adopted this waisted shape. From the guitarra latina came the 4 course (or 8 stringed) guitar, and then the Baroque guitar (5 course or 10 stringed) and then the 6 course guitar, which became the 6 string guitar. From the guitarra latina onward the waisted shape was prevalent.
> Why not just round shape like mandolin or banjo ?
There were instruments related to the guitar which had an oval shape, like the lute and the ud (or oud). The guitarra moresca, which came about the same time as the guitarra latina, had more of an oval shape and was believed to be influenced by the ud (which came from the Moors).
Is there any relationship between shape and the sound produced ? Any explanation will be appreciated.
That is a good question and I can find out for you, possibly. I can tell you that the earliest lutes/guitars had soundboards that were either wood or in the case of the lyre stretched skin like a drum. What did make a difference was string length, thickness and tension - also the thinness of the soundboard allowed for more vibrations and a greater volume (the soundboard is the top of the guitar). On a modern guitar, the soundboard is the piece of wood that contains the soundhole and the bridge is attached to it.
hope this helps.

Packages
I've seen lots of 'packages' that you can buy. Some of these include an amp, elec. guitar and picks for about $200-$500 or £150-£400. What are the disadvantages of getting these packages, I don't see any yet! An electric guitar for $300????????
Re: Packages
Often they are cheap because they're crap. Sometimes you might be lucky (if a Yamaha Pacifica is included it might be worth it). You probably would do better to find something secondhand. You can get some great deals if you keep your eyes open. This is especially true for amps. The ones that come in 'packages' usually aren't very inspiring. There's no point in getting a 'deal' if it puts you off playing.

DS-1 Pedal
What kind of effect does a pedal like the ds-1 have?
Re: DS-1 Pedal
I'm assuming you're talking about the Boss DS-1. It is a basic Distortion pedal and a very good one at that.
sound
Are the 0.10 strings better then 0.09 comparing it to the sound?
Re: sound
The difference is more in how it feels because the string has to be tighter to be tuned up to E. The heavier the string the more metal there is for the pickup to sense so you get a bigger sound but you probably wouldn't notice much difference between a .09 and a .10. Jimi Hendrix thought it was important to use thicker strings (.11s I think) and Stevie Ray Vaughn was famous for using .12 and .13 and still bending so much he broke them. Mind you, he had to superglue his fingernails back on sometimes and he used to superglue his fingertips to his arm and pull off the skin to try to protect his fingertips. Tony Iommi and James Burton use.08s.
Re: sound
Generally,yes.10's will give you more signal and more sustain.
Good Luck
Fender B-bender Telecaster
The B-string of my telecaster B-bender doesn't stay in tune, after using the bender.I use DÁddario super light strings(.0095-.044).I've oiled the bender equipment and put some graphity powder on the rotatingparts, but no results.Does anybody know, what I can do about it???
Re: Fender B-bender Telecaster
First thing I'd do is try using bigger strings. On my Strat, I can divebomb and still be completely in. I use 11-50.
Re: Fender B-bender Telecaster
I have a 97 Parsons/Green Fender Tele. I use Rotosound Yellows 10-46. Stays in tune great and I never break strings either. I've been known to bend all the stings from top to bottom, from top to bottom!!! No Sweat!
Re: Fender B-bender Telecaster
First make sure no parts are binding....or touching anywhere they should not.eg: body wood...then try visiting www.stringbender.com and read the online help topics......hope that helps. Is this Tle new or used?

learner
ive learnt most the chords in the first position and am working on bar chords but am starting to feel as if im not achieving anything any sugestions
Re: learner
hey,
I know how u feel. I was there. what u need is 2 find songs, or write songs that use the chords u know, and get a drum rythm. wheather it's a drummer or a rythm on a keyboard it will help keep the tempo. go faster, slower. what works for me really good is to play in an unformal band. I have played rythm guitar in my youth group for about 6 months, (now I'm 14) and now I can play lead when billy isn't there (our lead guitarist) w/out a problem. it's because i am playing in front of my peers, and there's pressure there.

Documentary about getting heard
I am looking for musicians to participate in my 15 minute documentary about getting (your music) heard in Vancouver. If you are a musician, that is trying to get heard (or even if you are already out there) I would love to talk to you!!
I want people who are in any stage of the process of getting your stuff listened to (from open mic, to paid gigs, to recording a demo, to self-promotion, to seeking a recording deal).
I am proposing this 15 minute documentary for my final project in the Media Program @ Capilano College. If it gets approved (1 in 3 chance), I will be filming from very late Oct. - through Nov.
email me - [email protected]
call me (Kyla) - 604-215-0595 THANKS
Re: Documentary about getting heard
I'm from Brasil and I play guitar in a alternative rock band. We are looking for a way to show our stuff out of Brasil, here we got many fans (even our mothers and wifes, he)....I'm curious about your documentary.
What do you think about to put foreign bands on this?

fx/loop on new marshall jcm2000 tsl 60watt combo
this amp comes with an fx attenuator on the front of the amp. even with the fx mix turned allthe way up,my effects pedals are barely audible. if i plug my pedal board into the front of the amp direct it's fine but theres too much noise on gain channels. is there a sensitivity adjustment inside the amp(circutry). everything works fine on my jcm dsl 50watt head and i've already tested the cables that send and return the signal. anyone with helpful info contact me. i've got a job in a couple of days and would like to use the amp if i can get it to work properly. thanks w.g.

The Major Scale
I need to know a lot more about the major scale.
For example, 'A major' (i'm assuming the scale takes letters): is the first note played an 'A', and the rest are in the relative positions?
For example, for 'A major', do I find any 'A' on the sixth string and play that then 2 frets down, then fifth string .... etc according to the shape?
Re: The Major Scale
??? I found that octaves are a great way of getting around the guitar.
Good Luck
Re: The Major Scale
Hey there, as far as the major scale goes i will try and give you an easy understanding of ther scale but if you wish to know more please mail me.
The major scale is a collection of notes starting on the root and ending on the Octave. For instance like you said A major, you would play the scale starting on A and end on A the next octave up. I dont know fully what you would like to know but im just trying to help.
The first note of the scale is the root as ive mentioned. Im gonna use the key of C to make this easier. Each scale has a key of its own. The key tell you which notes are to be sharpened of flattened. The kay of C has no sharps or flats there for the scale of C major is C D E F G A B (C) the second C is known as the octave and from that point the scale just repeates itself. Just to let you know the key of A has 3 sharps, F C G.
Few questions
I recently bought a right handed Ibanez GAX70.
Is it possible to convert it over to right?
If so, what precautions should I take?
