1953 Gibson ES335

My dad has a 1953 Gibson ES335, could anyone tell me how much it is worth? We had it looked at about 5 years ago and it was estimated betweeen $13,000 and $20,000. Any information would be very awesome. Please feel free to email me at [email protected]

What should I buy?

Should I buy 0.10 or 0.09 strings? It's a problem for me because I'm afraid of bending with 0.10 strings. Is this a problem or not with this cauge?

Re: What should I buy?

the tighter[lower number]the guage, the easier it will be to bend.. so .09s would be best if you really wanna go crazy. they are a lot tighter tho, so they are suceptible to breaking easier. so you might wanna go with 0.10s instead. :)

VIC

What should I buy?

regulars are also better is you have a floyd rose because then you can do the set up your self without having ti muck around with the springs and other stuff

Re: What should I buy?

go for 10-52
they got loads of grunt, but youve just got to work your fingers a bit more for big bends
10's sound warmer and sustain better than 9's. but if your realy uncomforatble with 10's, then go for what feels right ay

6-String versus 12-String

What are the major reasons/differences an acoustic guitar player would choose a 6-string over a 12-string, or vice versa?

Re: 6-String versus 12-String

12 strings sound like 2 guitars. they usually arent very loud but sound beautiful.a 12 string is basically a 6 string with the e,a,and d strings tuned up an octave. i personally like 6 strings but use a 12 string as a back up.i would reccomend spending alot on a 6 string and find a cheap 12. ovation makes a nice sounding 12 for a reasonable price but their 6 strings arent very good.: What are the major reasons/differences an acoustic guitar player would choose a 6-string over a 12-string, or vice versa?

Re: 6-String versus 12-String

Ill have to disagree with Aaron about getting a cheap 12 string.....I personally love the 12 and contrary to popular opinion they are awesome for playing lead(if you have a good one).......if you use mainly 1st position chords they are a real treat to play but if you play a lot of bar chords even the good ones will be a little tiresome

Re: 6-String versus 12-String

The main reason of course is because of the sound. I use both a 6 and 12 in solo performances (one on Nov 19*, as a matter of fact) and in my 11 or 12 song set, I will use the 12 string on 4 or 5. The songs that I do on the 12 just do not sound right on the 6; the songs on the 6 won't work on the 12 because of hammers, bends, slides, bar chords, etc. that are very difficult if not impossible on the 12!
*If you're in the Richmond VA area on Nov 19, come on by the Rare Olde Times on Patterson Ave about 9 pm!

Correction on the '53 Gibson

I was informed that Gibson didnt make the ES335 until '58. If anyone knows what model they made that looks like the 335 in 1953 please let me know. Maybe a 330? Thanks!

Metal

My husband is really into metal, and he plays guitar well, but nothing like say his idol Zakk (Ozzy's guitarist). Can anyone give me some pointers to pass on to him? He's looking to gain speed as well as acuracy. Thanks!

Need band help

I just got a three person band together. We can play less then ten songs but we plan on being really good in the months to follow. But right now we want a band name. This has become a problem. We aren't scary or mystic but we want a good name. How do you think of good band names? Dictionary? Weed?

Re: Need band help

Just have to toss out ideas. Get a big sheet of paper and hang it up then start tossing names on the sheet.
then come back in a week and see what you have....Ya have to decide if you want it to mean something. Or reference something......

Re: Need band help

okay, iv foudn out the easiest way to make a band name is to make up a song in ur head and think about all the words that u made up. like i was messing around in the car making up songs and i came acoss "no treatment" (that is my band name u cant use it) but i mean u can make a funny name " the fetus eaters" or watever.

thanx Kurt

strings

i broke a .009 E so and didn't have anything else but an .011. so i tuned it up to a E. I liked the sound of the bigger string but it is really hard to bend. i was wondering if there are any strings that will give a fatter sound while still being able to be bent easily. i use super slinky. thanks

Re: strings

Try 10 to 46 Dean Markleys. Also, don't forget, you can still tune down a 1/2 step or more. This will aid in string bending(they won't feel as tight) and produce a "warmer, darker" tone. Plus you will have increased resonance of the heavier strings. Simply put, the best of both worlds.

BC-Rich guitars (holy capitalism!)

in my opinion BC-Rich offers guitars at too high prices... I also want such an expressive instrument, but the money to buy it I`ll have when I'm buried. (Sounds funny - but it upsets me!)
Who shares my opinion, and who not?!

Re: BC-Rich guitars (holy capitalism!)

Well, you do get what you pay for.
Think of it like this.........
Body woods. Some produce more tone and resonance. Some are made up of 3 or more pieces of wood, glued together. One piece bodies are better, exept for neck throughs. Cheap drift wood is simply cheap.
Necks.Probably the most important part. Neck throughs will cost more , but will have more comfort( at the neck joint) more tone, more natural sustain. Bolt on's are ok too. Just remember that quality wood and fretwork cost money. Do you want a cheap neck with the frets stabbing your hand when you move up and down? Or do you want a "smooth" feel all around? Size also counts. Cheap guitars have small frets, which are harder to bend.
Hardware. Original Floyds are awesome, some imitations truely suck. Again quality. Your choice, do you want to stay in tune or not? German made Schaller's are very well made.
Pickups. Some sound cool, some don't. Some sound "heavy", while some just hum and buzz.
All in all, don't get me wrong. You don't have to go broke buying a guitar. Just never compromise. Make sure you know what you want.Learn more about various woods and tone , including parts. Then you will be able to make an educated purchase.
On a final note, some guitars cost a little more because they are made in USA. The same company may offer a similar product thats made in India or Mexico.
The quality is still close if not the same, but think about it. The big guitar company's send there products to be made in "Sweat Shops" so THEY can save money!

Re: BC-Rich guitars (holy capitalism!)

I'm assuming your talking about the price of the made in USA series, these are hand made with a great deal of time and labor involved, unlike the NJ, platnium, bronze, and rave series that are made over seas. The hand made series use better hardware, pick-ups, and better wood for better tone. Most of the US BC Rich's are neck throughs that have great sustain and play like a dream. Don't confuse the HAND CRAFTED MADE IN THE USA and the off shore pieces. For more info check out bcrich.com and edromanguitars.com(this site tells alot about B.C.Rich and other fine guitars. I own a US made B.C. Rich, woundn't trade it for anything and plan on buying another.

Re: BC-Rich guitars (holy capitalism!)

Where do you live? My husband and I were in San Francisco last week looking at guitars. We found a BC-Rich Warlock for $350 brand new at Guitar Center. I heard though they cutaways chip really easy, and they now are cheap made. I think Twitchdoctor is right though, you get what you pay for. Try looking at pawn shops. My husband traded a gun for a Jackson. Good luck!

Guitar Solo Sound?

Hi, I've just bought a Korg AX100G (which is great) but also does anyone know how to make a good guitar solo sound? (not neccarserily on the korg just in general) thanx. Email me at [email protected] thanx

Re: Guitar Solo Sound?

Ample reverb, some delay(about 2 or 3 repeats) maybe add some chorus if you like. Don't saturate the distortion too much, or you will get this ugly hissing, sizzling sound. Well, not of course if you like this sort of sound.
If you have a nice distortion/ clean sound, just try out differnt settings on the above Reverb,Delay, Chorus.

Re: Guitar Solo Sound?

i have a smooth distortion with a chorus and pedal wah, you could try something like that, noise reduction helps too

Re: Guitar Solo Sound?

Really Korg AX100G is good.
But for good solo sound only effects are not enougf. It depends on your finger sound too.

With best regards, David.

carvin 8x10?

i play bass in a metal band and the other day i played on a carvin r1000 with an ampeg 8x10 cab the other day and it rocked...but i was wondering is there a difference between an ampeg 8x10 and a carvin 8x10 in reference to low end or is a carvin every bit as good as an ampeg except a better price? thanks.

Re: carvin 8x10?

I'm looking into buying a Carvin product myself. If there is one thing I know about Carvin, it's that they strive for craftsmanship and tone quallity. I'm not suprised it has a better value because everything they make does. I'm sure that carvin is as good as Ampeg, if not better. Hey, if Carvin is good enough for Steve Vai, it's good enough for me.

Diamant Guitar

Several days ago I've bought one electric guitar DIAMANT. I am just interested what do you think about them and can I find some information online?
Thanks, David.

diamant guitar

J have a diamant guitar in very good condition.
It is copy of gibson les paul and it is really great guitar J have had this guitar for almost twenty years and J am very pleased with.Guitar
is really great it has warm and deep sound you can
play heavy metal as well as blues.Recently J bought Ibanez ltd450 and paid for
it almost 1000USD J was dissapointed and returned it because in comparison of diamant this ibanez
has trashy sound what a piece of stick with strings. Some people say that diamant sounds like ibanez Jem probably they are right. This is perfect copy of gibson les paul many people envy me diamant but J never sell it.

metal

i like metal.

Re: metal

Yea, Metal is nice, but I prefer Plastic. Even Fiberglass is cool if you give it a chance.
