which hand

My friend told me if you write with your left
you play with your lift is this true?

Re: which hand

: My friend told me if you write with your left
: you play with your lift is this true?

Generally if you're right handed you pick with your right and fret with your left.
However there's no real hard and fast rule.
I'm right handed but I hold a cricket bat left handed, it just feels more natural that way.
I guess the same applies to the guitar.
Play it whichever way it feels the most natural.
Look at Jimi, he generally played left handed but he was known to just pick up other people's instruments and just play 'em whichever way they were set up.
For example the bass parts he played on Electric Lady Land were played on the bass player's bass (right handed)

Re: which hand

yeah im left handed, but i play guitar right handed. i been playin for 8 years and its just what feels comfortable. if youve never played before try both ways, you might get a shock.

Re: which hand

Hmm.Coventional wisdom sez if you're right handed, you should pick with your right. This is cause you'll need more control and agility when picking. Also, the right hand is stronger. But if the other way works for you,I guess that's cool too.
Good Luck

carvin or ampeg?how do they compare?

if you've played on a carvin stack and an ampeg how do you think they compare...because i dont know whether to go cheap with a carvin stack or go with the name and get an ampeg stack...help.

depends which models you speak of...(more)

Carvin's Legend (Vai model) can get some pretty cool tones. The low-mid response is really nice and the cabs come with Celestion Vintage 30s which are great speakers IMO. I once had a Carvin X100B and it was to muddy and mid-rangey like a Mesa Boogie Mark series.
Never really got into Ampeg stuff. Seems every tone they could do was better on others, Fender, Mesa, etc...

Ricky 610

I recently picked up a Rickenbacker 610 and the strings on it are pretty bad.
Has anyone got one and if so what brand and gauge of strings do you recommend.
I usually put 010-046 on my Gibsons and 009-042 on my Fenders.

do any of you know where i can get..

a pearloid white pick up cover???
i have a fender american delux p bass and have pearloid pick guard, and it would look wicked if it has pearloid pick up cover... but it's not easy to find... so.. if you have any idea.. please let me know... thanx

MAKING MY OWN EFFECTS....I NEED YOUR HELP!

HEY FOLKS!
I WAS WONDERING IF ANYBODY KNOWS HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN STOMP BOXES OR OTHER EFFECTS FOR YOUR GUITAR. IM LOOKING FOR SOME REALLY WIERD SOUNDS. IS THERE ANYWAY I CAN MAKE MY OWN PEDALS OR IS THERE ANY TRICKS OR TECHNIQUES THAT MAY PRODUCE A FREAKY SOUND???

Re: MAKING MY OWN EFFECTS....I NEED YOUR HELP!

Hmm.I read a couple of books on making effects pedals.I
suggest start with the overdrive/Dist. pedal, they're the easiest.Delays, flangers, phasers? You have my prayers!!These are said to be very difficult! Those are sciences that should be well thought out and studied. For me...I leave that stuff to the effects gurus at Boss,Ibanez and MXR.
Wish you Luck

Re: MAKING MY OWN EFFECTS....I NEED YOUR HELP!

Try talking to some local electronics guys, maybe guitar techs or whoever. They might can give you an idea what kind of circuitry to use, how to put it together, etc., then you can experiment. You may even find someone who would like to help you, just for kicks.

japanese fender strats

hi,
i want to know if a japanese fender stratocaster is better than a mexican one, and if so it is, Can i get a japanese here in mexico?????
thanx.

Re: japanese fender strats

Japanese Strats are generally considered to be of better quality than Mexican ones, but I have no idea whether you can get them in Mexico! I played a Jap Strat for years and loved it, it all depends on whether it feels right for you.

I bought an early 80's jap strat at a pawn shop for $200. i was later told that the japanese woods they used were excellent. Got home and it sounded great. I know use it for all my leads!

Beginning guitar: HELP ME PLEASE!!!

I wanna start learning hard-rock style electric guitar. I've never even held a guitar. Is it okay if I start by learning on a 31" with around 13 frets? Would I miss out on something important? Any suggestions you can give, go ahead 'cause I need answers.

Re: Beginning guitar: HELP ME PLEASE!!!

Hi
Nobody can start learning hard rock straight away, it may look easy but you wouldn't believe how hard it is to play some hard rock music. It's much better if you get the basics down, yeah, on your 13 fret, and then start playing some simple tunes. This may take about a year, is important to get this really well. DON'T get
an expensive electric, you may get fed up and end up selling it. Any guitar is good to learn on, if youre a beginner you shouldn't be bothered that much about the sound just yet. it's cool to talk about the different brands but don't follow fashions. Hint: check out Tanglewood Guitars- superb value, amazing sound, from £140 new!

Re: Beginning guitar: HELP ME PLEASE!!!

Hey there, it doesnt matter what type of guitar you start out on or the amount of frets as all beginners start on chords any way which are done around the first few frets. Any guitar would do. Rather than just trying to play hard rock straight away i'd recommend learning the fundamentals first, such as chords (open and barre), scales. Once you have these and you have a good grasp, which shouldnt take too long, then you should be able to start on your chosen style. I hope ive been of some use. C'ya ..... Meister.

Re: Beginning guitar: HELP ME PLEASE!!!

Don't listen to anyone telling you to spend at least "X" amount of money. There's absolutely no truth in it. You can pick up a nice acoustic guitar that you'll be able to take with you places and not worry about power for an amp, for far less than a hundred bucks. Such guitars are well made, and offer easy playability. They'll assist you in the learning process too! If you must have an electric guitar than look at the Squiers by Fender. They are killer, and 1 out of 10 will be better than an American made Fender. I know, because I own one such Squier. It's an Affinity Fat Strat purchased brand new for $129. Also, look at Raven guitars. They're fantastic, and reasonbly priced and are copies of some very famous very expensive guitars. Check out Harmony Central's website for reviews of all guitars.

Re: Beginning guitar: HELP ME PLEASE!!!

Also, consider some of the Strat copies that are very good. Such brands are Jay Turser, Johnson and few others. They also make Tele copies, Les Pauls etc. The Johnson Acoustics are first class. When you do start looking at guitars, try to take someone with you who knows a little about playing, and can explain what to look and feel for. Important considerations for a first learning guitar, are how the neck feels to you. If you have small hands, you may look for a thinner neck. Some styles of guitars have "faster" action. This will make it easier for you to learn how to play notes, and at the same time, make it easier for you to make mistakes. Faster actions also offer less fatigue which is very important to keep you enthusiatic about practicing. My best advice is: look at everything, overlook nothing, don't be brand prejudiced! Just because something has a high price tag, doesn't necessarily mean it's better. Some guitars may have a very expensive and beautiful finish. Some may not be quite as pretty, but function and sound as good or better as the gorgeous one.
Finally, remember a guitar is just a tool. Granted, some are better than others, some are better suited to some tasks than others, but in the final analysis, the guitar is only as good as the player.

Re: Beginning guitar: HELP ME PLEASE!!!

hey dood
13 frets mite be a little short. if u are on a tight budget pick up a second hand strat-style guitar. these are good to learn on as you can get a diverse array of sounds from them. just check that the neck is straight, and that there is no realy shoddy patch up jobs

Re: Beginning guitar: HELP ME PLEASE!!!

there is only one type of guitar you should start out on. a Gibson Les Paul 1959 classic. (sunburst), there is no alternative.

Re: Beginning guitar: HELP ME PLEASE!!!

At least get a guitar with 21 frets to start out with. Although, 22 would be a better bet. Thirteen frets will totally suck when your trying to learn and play octaves.
Here are some good, albeit cheap guitars. In other words, ones that you will have to "upgrade" later on, but will give you what you need now without going broke.
Fender Stratocaster..... ( Mex or US made)
Jackson.... ( one of the low budget/assembled in India)
Ibanez..... just about any model will work
By the Way...... Try to spend at least $400.00 on your guitar.( Mexican made Strats go for $350.00/ India made Jacksons go for about the same) Anything less than $350.00 WILL SUCK!! Unless you can get a good deal on something used.
Also, try and buy from a music store nearby, that way if you need help with something, they'll be there to fix/ adjust, whatever. Go mail order if you know someone who lives close if you need help. Ex. You might want to lower the action and may not know how.
Some of this info might sound obvious, just keep it in consideration.
