Late 60's Hofner Bass Quiz

I just got a mint Hofner bass out of a time capsule, and it differs from the ones I've seen with an extra control panel that has a 3 way switch, volume, and boost button besides the usual volume/tone pair. I think this was an optional mod, but hope someone has the real scoop on this baby.

Need help with guitar name!

I am trying to buy a classical guitar for my boyfriend for Christmas. I tried to ask him about it without making him suspicious, but I couldn't really understand the name he said. It sounded like "J.C. Centaura" or something like that - he said it was around $850. Can anyone help me figure out the guitar he was talking about? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

THC Custom, tri coil humbucker prototype

I've have this great solid electric guitar that is a Tom Holmes Custom, #22 (THC on the headstock) and it has the cutout hole for a 3 coil pickup. I have two questions about it:(I'm a busy guy and my worship of guitars is backsliden) What is the Hamer 3 coil instrument called, and where can I find a 3 coil pick-up for it? (it has a 2 coil humbucker) Thanks

Is it worth it to put emg's in a squire strat?

I have an old squire strat that was my first guitar; I can't get rid of it because it has sentimental value, I'm sure you older players know what I mean. It's actually a very nice guitar, it was from the first squire series, and has different internals than the new ones. It sounds 99% as good as the new strats, and has some of the best action I've ever played. My question is, since I still play it all the time, and actually still like the action better than my other guitars, would it be worth it to install an EMG system? I'm looking at an EMG-SA/SA set with SPC and EXG, I haven't gilmour'd a guitar yet and I've already got lace-sensors in my other strat. Basically, I'm wondering if anyone knows if the squire strats can have the EMG strat systems installed in them, and if it would be enough of an improvement to be worth the price. The guitar sounds great already, I'm just trying to find a better tone and balance. If this doesn't sound feasible, can anyone suggest another replacement system that might be more worth my while? Thanks in advance, feel free to send me an e-mail with any opinions. I'll be sitting in my apartment trying to play through the PULSE comfortably numb solo without a mistake for the 9 millionth time, so feel free to interrupt me.

Re: Is it worth it to put emg's in a squire strat?

Hmm.I used EMG's in my '78 Strat. and I hated them! They have their own preamp, which means you're stuck with a sterile and overly clean tone.Plus, you'd have to make sure there's enough room for the battery.
The humbuckers,on the other hand, are powerful, well balanced and give pretty good harmonics.
I,personaly, would recommend the Seymore Duncan LiL'59,Lil'JB. or the Screamin'Demon. The JB's and Demons are bright, rich and loaded with SPANKABILITY!
Good Luck

Re: Is it worth it to put emg's in a squire strat?

Any "non stock" pickup will sound better. Usually the original pickups just plain suck/ not enough juice.
I would recomend some Seymore Duncans or even DiMarzio's. I prefer Duncans though. The JB Jr, would be a good place to start. Try the website. I think its www.seymoreduncan.com. The have info on every pickup they make and you can even hear a comparison.

Re: Is it worth it to put emg's in a squire strat?

I've got emg/active pickups in my Squire strat, it's one of the original squires, cost me $290 brand new. Chuck Levins/Washington Music installed an original Floyd Rose and the EMG's--Unbelievable face lift for a decent guitar. Still get that strat sound, no buzzes can You say "David Gillmore" sound. If you like Floyd, all his strats are loaded with EMG's--You can't miss. I have a JB Jr. on my Jackson, it's fat, the challenge is it has more level then the other Pick ups, even the duncan '59. Your Call! can't miss with EMG though.

Re: Is it worth it to put emg's in a squire strat?

: jb jr,s rule installed one in two identical 100.00 dollar squier tele,s and they were monsters! stay awat from poplar wood bodies though too thin sounding recommend alder.

FS: Mesa Boogie Mark III Colisum Simulclass Head

Rare Top of the line Mesa Head purchased in 1986. Used only as a home amp. I bought it when I lived at home and had a full time job and wanted the best amp made. Never gigged (not a professional musician) just used to play/practice/fool around with. The amp has currently been send to Mesa for a check-up and Mike B. (tech who actually built the amp) spec'ed it and it is 100%. Sent the amp just to make sure everything was fine before I considered selling it.

The amp has 4 6L6 and 2 EL34 power tubes and is rated at 150 watts. The non-Simulclass version was I believe around 2X that.

Again the amp is mint, no scratches, never dropped etc...

If you are in the market for a mint Mark III head, this is it...

Pictures upon request.

$1500 firm.

Thanks,

Robert Obando

action problems on a les paul epiphone

However hard i try i cant get the action right , its strung with 9s and it still seems too high for my tastes , but too low and i get fret buzz, too high and string bending is out of the question please help , thanks

Re: action problems on a les paul epiphone

mmmm... since they are so 'easy' to setup and you cant get it low without buzzing... is the neck straight ?? if not adjust the truss rod, but if you aren't used to doing this read up about it first as you can cause permenant damage if incorrectly done, gibson also has a .pdf setup manual on their website, maybe review it just for a refresher, and/or have someone else give it a go, on some guitars sometimes I waste 30 min or more trying to get it setup, then I walk away and when I get back to it it just 'happens' in minutes (especially floyds!) ... I have an epi LP-Signature and I can get the action 'amazingly' low when need be... well thats my 2 cents... good luck.

Re: action problems on a les paul epiphone

Have your local guitar-dude setup the neck. But if that doesn't help enough, ask him for a "grind and polish" on the frets.Especially if it's a new guitar.
Good Luck

Ibanez Custom Les Paul copy

Hi everyone,
This was my first guitar. I bought it used in 1981, and was told Ibanez got sued because it was too close to the Gibson Les Paul. Can anyone tell me what its value would be today. It's black and in great shape in the case!

Thanks!
KK

You don't supply enough information about the guitar to give a specific answer. Here's the most important questions that need to be answered:
1. What's the serial number, if there is one? THis will help determine the age of the guitar.
2. Is it a set neck or bolt on? Set necks are VERY rare and therefore more valuable.
3. What is the exact shape of the headstock? If it's the same as the Gibson, then it's more collectible and more valuable.

I'd suggest asking your question on the Discussion Board at Ibanez Collectors World. There's a section specifically for Replicas.

Re: Ibanez Custom Les Paul copy

i also have an ibanes les paul custom and i was also told the gibson sues them story. mine is a mahogany red bolt on. i am interested in how much it is worth too. mine was given to me.

Re: Ibanez Custom Les Paul copy

I have one as well, black with white trim, gold tuning pegs. The value would depend on the condition, but I've heard they can be worth decent money.

Metallica bought out, not sold out

All you people out there who see Metallica as crap as they in light of Napster, and "selling out" on their fans, show some F**king fespect. These guys have worked there arses of, not giving up when their bass player left this world, to go from an unheard of garage band to the greatest influence on Metal. When you talk about Metallica "selling out", its the musicians directly you are attacking. The bastards you should be after are the executives, the promoters, and anyone else who is just there for the money. Does it realy matter if music is Mainstream or not? If its good music, thats all there is to it. Metallica has not sold out on its fans, they have been bought out by the greed of those who want nothing other than to make a quick buck out of a great bunch of people, and musicians.

Re: Metallica bought out, not sold out

metallica sold out long before the napster thing, all bands start out as unheard of garage bands and do you really think metallica is not in it for the money? I'll agree with you that it doesn't matter if music is mainstream or not, if it's good it's good, if it sucks and you like cool, whatever.

Re: Metallica bought out, not sold out...YA' DAMN RIGHT ! !

Vladimir is right! Copyright and Publishing Laws in place to protect artists against being ripped off.And do you think the GREEDY-ASS record companies are going to allow the general public to pimp their artists without getting a cut?? That's INSANE!! It's like asking a pimp to use his hoe for your benefit, without a kick-back!You'll wind up in a dumpster! And besides,if
anyone could copy and distribute your SOUL for free, the music industry and artists would surely suffer!
Sorry folks, but this is the very essence of capitalism.
Without laws and regulations the already-scummy music scene would turn into one giant CLUSTER-FUCK...with musicians on the bottom.
Think about it
