help finding faceplate screws
hi. i have a few vintage ElectroHarmonix pedals. they are missing some faceplate screws. i havent been able to find them at my local hardware store. does anyone know where i might be able to find some? please help. [email protected]

Dissapointing trend in Music
I'm sure everyone's aware of this by now, but after switching to MTV or turning on the radio one too many times, I feel so disgusted by it I can't help but point it out. Somewhere about 1990 or so, pop music stood up, pulled out a gun, and shot itself right in the eye. The problem with music today has nothing to do with not enough guitar solos, or whatever other lame thing you hear a 14 year old whine about, it has to do with the fact that music is no longer a form of art. Pop music today is simply an image that an artist portrays, serving only to con 15 year old kids into thinking that that image is "cool" and buying their album. Now, when I say "pop" music, many people will have the automatic response "well, so what, it's pop music, it's always sucked." However, if you'll remember, pop music originally encompassed such legendary rock founders as The Beatles, Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, so on and so forth. What we see now is no longer a form of musical artistry, a translation of feelings into a musical form, it's simply a collection of people who want to make money by looking "cool" on television. It has no substance, no value, no meaning, and basically no purpose outside of a resale market value. So don't whine about music today not having skilled enough guitar playing, whine about it being nothing but a marketing tool. And next time you see your younger brother, sister, nephew, niece, or friend talking about how great the new matchbox twenty album is, pop in Comfortably Numb and give them a taste of what real music was before the advent of the image-fueled musical economy. Only by making sure the next generation is exposed to real music can we hope to stop it from dying out with ours. And next time you see Britney Spears leaving whatever tit-exposing photo shoot she's doing at the time, do me a favor and tell her to go fuck herself. Long live real fucking rock and roll.

Gah, stop making fun of 14 year olds !!! im 14 i play the guitar but i didnt buy it to be "in" i bought it cause my cousin plays and i wanted to learn how to play too. but i guess go ahead if u want, too. :( Blues rule and EVH rocks and most of the new rock bands are good, too. now STOP MAKING FUN OF 14 YEAR OLDS! not all of us are like that.

because they have been brainwashed by the sh** guitar playing they think is cool and fake marketing ploys, they all go and get themselves axes too as they reckon that makes them look "in", and play stuff written by amateurs, their idols.
Worse still, they criticise legends like Led Zeppelin, Knopfler, satch, crazy horse (all my favs here!!) and blues music for being "bad", out of date, etc. And could someone tell those 12/14 year olds that they look stupid in baggy hoodies and jeans meant for grown men? thanks.

Not to mention that anybody who plays rock guitar, be it good music or bad music, shouldn't be so ignorant as to ignore the fact that early blues guitar defined most rock guitar today. In my opinion, anybody just picking up the guitar should learn the blues before they attempt anything else, as it creates a foundation for basically all lead guitar. Anybody who isn't amazed by SRV or Satriani doesn't deserve to pick up a guitar in the first place. The actual difficulty of a guitar piece has nothing to do with it's greatness, what's important is a feeling that's imbued in the music by only the greatest guitarists/musicians. A piece of music should be an attempt at conveying feelings through sound, not screaming and hammering on the same scale over and over again (unless there's a real message involved, then by all means go for it). I respect guitarists like Steve Vai and EVH, but their playing doesn't cause me to feel anything besides pity at how incredibly long they spent learning every single scale and playing it 24 hours a day. Guitarists like Clapton, Gilmour, Page, Hendrix, and all the rest of the greats are the ones who stand apart, because their playing FEELS...it's raw emotion, and it tells a story. A good solo shouldn't be straight speedy licks, it should like another voice, singing it's own verse of the song. Anybody who's ever heard Comfortably Numb, Stairway, White Room, Little Wing, and the rest of the classics should understand that they are different than the intro to Eruption or whatever riff Limp Bizcut is repeating over and over again (not to insult the guitarists of these new age "anger" bands, I've heard some of their real work and it's excellent). All that's important is that new players understand the guitar as an addition to a band, an incredibly beautiful instrument that can be used to convey emotions without any spoken words, rather than a chance to whirlwind through scales as quickly as possible to impress the neighborhood kids. In the end, all a lead guitarist can hope to do is tell his part of the story in any given song, regardless of how fast, slow, complicated or simple it is. All great bands are comprised of members who know their places within the band. Pink Floyd works perfectly because no one part of the ensemble attempts to raise itself above the rest of the band, and everything flows perfectly together. It's the same with all the rock legends...they work because they understand each other, and they understand that they're not creating the music, but simply letting their feelings and emotions flow through in whatever form they take. Sure, we've all got to learn a basic knowledge of the guitar in order to play...chords, a couple scales, and maybe a little theory. But what's important is to immerse yourself in music, and not immediately forego something just because it's "old" or "outdated." A true guitarist is a true artist, and a true artist understands that art in any form is beautiful, as long as it conveys a feeling and a meaning. Anyway, I've said my peace, maybe Guitar World will hire me to write editorials on the decadance of modern music, hehe. Laters,

Hmm.I think I understand your grief!A large part of it has to do with the VIDEO.Back in the day it was all AUDIO that was used for record sales.But now,our brain cells can be assaulted from two sides.Here in the U.S. where T.V. is so powerful,it is easy to beguile the masses into thinking that "ALL THAT WIGGLES IS GOLD".I will admit that some of the stuff is alright,but the nature of the beast has changed,so all I can do is be selective of what I buy.
I also thnk that music has run out of new ideas.So,we're stuck in a vortex of masturbatory,ego-maniacle,tit-shaking MUMBO-JUMBO!Oh well,I like looking at TITS anyway.
Britany Spears,by the way,has the look.But Christine Agiulara(spelling??)is a real talent!PROOF:She took a piano-player,bassist and drummer to a small club with record people attending...and rocked the joint!! I watched her on cable with a live band.I turned off the sound and observed.She had superb stage presence and was in total command of the band.Without all the glitz,glamour and props.
So,I'll end by saying...there's talent out there,you just have to watch closer!!

Hi Jason-- Flatwounds have an outer winding that is flat, kind of like the tape winding on a racing bike's handlebars. Also there are some strings that are shaved a little, to make them smoother. They used to call that kind "halfrounds", I don't know if they still make those. They're a little brighter than regular flatwounds. Flatwounds have a mellow sound with a lot of bass, and they're harder to play than regular roundwound strings. You can barely bend them. They last forever though. Jazz players use them mostly, I think.

Well they are 'flatter', the way they are wound, I won't explain the process as you can go to many string maker sites and see the technical details, I just find that the sound better and are easier to play when you attack really hard... and I use them to get that 'country blues' sound.
Old Kramer guitar neck
I recently bought a rare Kramer pacer carrera with the rockinger tremolo in excellent condition and an older 1980's berretta American body (by Kramer).
I am looking to buy a used Kramer neck, either the banana stock or the shark fin! If anyone can direct me to the right place or might have one for sale I would greatly appreciate it! IT MUST BE A TILT HEAD STOCK made in the good OL' U.S.A.

I'm an Australian living in China and very much a begginer when it comes to the guitar. I've 'mastered' the basic chords but I really struggle trying to identify appropriate rhythm patterns. I've been asked to play 'Sailing' by Rod Stewart for a Xmas party to accompany one of my Chinese collegues. Could you give some tips on a suitable strum pattern? I'm keen on sixties music (esp. Chet and Main Street Breakdown
I've listened to Main Streat Breakdown performed by Chet Atkins. There is something about the sound which I can't reproduce. I have two questions:
1. Does anyone have info on the technical set up of the instrument he is using (i.e., tuning, treble string high tuning)?
2. Does anyone have tablature for this piece.

Looking for the perfect amp
I need an amp that can be battery powered, or plugged into the wall. It has to be portable, but with some guts to it. I need it for a clean acoustice guitar sound, with reverb if possible. Maybe you can help me out on this.

Am I asking too little for my old Strat?
It's a '72 3 bolt maple neck, tremelo version, original cream/yellow color, with (non-original) black pickguard. New pots and 5-way switch and 2 new pickups, and though I have the original parts they are pretty well worn out. Original paint has a good many nicks and some hairline cracks, nothing too bad. It's in excellent playing condition, recently set up by authorized Fender guy. Anyway , I just took it to my local consignment shop and put a price of $950 on it, but I've just seen some prices online that were a lot higher. I'm wondering if I should call in the morning and raise the price. Any advice?

Hmm.$950...that's about right.You mentioned the two "new" pickups,that could de-value the guitar a little.But I'd ask for $1,200 even if the other hardware is worn.That can be easily replaced with little or no damage to the axe.Also,the store gets their cut too.So,you should ask for for $$$.

Tab is fairly simple to read. There are 6 lines each of which refer to 1 string on your guitar. When looking at the TAB the line that is on the top refers to the first string or thinest of all the strings on your guitar. The rest go acorrdingly. The second highest line refers to the second string and so on. The numbers you see on the TAB are fret numbers. So if on the TAB sheet the highest line had the number 3 on it then you play the third fret on the first string.

ADA Flanger question
hi. i just bought a vintage ADA flanger on ebay. the description said that it would be in good and functional condition. i just received it. and it just seems like a very "noisy" pedal. is it supposed to be noisy? im not sure if this is the way the pedal is. or if this guy sold me a pedal w/ a problem. please help. thanks. regards, VIC

at a time when i was in dire straits, i sold a priceless Hauser to a student. (Actually it wasn't me, it was my husband that did it.) Would you beleive he (the student) came back with a pickup installed in it? I've seen people mess with original gibson f-soundholes and strats and les pauls from the fifties: adding & removing wah wah bars, etc just in general performing some type of defacement to them. this is a mojr blasphemy in my book, and one of the greatest types of guitar sins (however not the only type) that can be committed... we must also consider the childlike innocence of the student in perpetrating such crimes. yet ignorance of the laws is no excuse.
could they not have consulted with someone first?
or did they consult with some incompetent masquerading as an afficionado?
needless to say it broke this old heart to see it.
anyone have any mutilation/ defacement of classic guitars stories?
to hear of someone else's sad experiences may make my own more tolerable

Yes I've seen a lot, but one that really got me sick was a new "Johnnie Smith" Gibson I sold about 1972 to a notorious writer/performer who had much success in the business. After a couple weeks he returned to have new strings put on, and when I opened the case he had screwed four different kids of pickups (all cheap) to the top. Some were not centered, so out came the scews, and more holes were made next to the first attempts of accuracy. This guy is a genius songwriter and his favorite guitar is one he got as a kid. It has no back, as many as nine pickups. He has put in a turn-buckle to support string tension, and several bottles of Elmer's glue literally poured inside the top.
I've sold him several axes, and hate to think what became of them, but I had to eat too!
Got to go now, its almost "After Midnight"

and guess where i'd like to put all that elmer's glue?
i think people should need either an rx or fbi clearance to purchase elmer's glue anyway, unless they can prove that they are not within 2,000 miles of a guitar.
