Re: Guitar Blashphemy
I've done my fair share, especially years ago, but the mods/hacks I've made (expermential, some great... others not so) were defintely a 'learning experince, only regret is a couple of axes I have which would be worth much more now if not hacked up.. but I use my guitars, not look at them.
: at a time when i was in dire straits, i sold a priceless Hauser to a student. (Actually it wasn't me, it was my husband that did it.) Would you beleive he (the student) came back with a pickup installed in it? I've seen people mess with original gibson f-soundholes and strats and les pauls from the fifties: adding & removing wah wah bars, etc just in general performing some type of defacement to them. this is a mojr blasphemy in my book, and one of the greatest types of guitar sins (however not the only type) that can be committed... we must also consider the childlike innocence of the student in perpetrating such crimes. yet ignorance of the laws is no excuse.
: could they not have consulted with someone first?
: or did they consult with some incompetent masquerading as an afficionado?
: needless to say it broke this old heart to see it.
: anyone have any mutilation/ defacement of classic guitars stories?
: to hear of someone else's sad experiences may make my own more tolerable
: thanks. ; )

dear mr. to you:
well, it is understandable to experiment, if you're using a... (i had better not pronounce any actual brand names) ... an inexpensive, bottom line type of an instrument to hack and destroy; however this is more like committing actual gradual torture, as opposed to an outright murder such as many grunge bands and others perpetrate by a public onstage smashing....
somebody call the Guitar Police!!!!!!!!
Re: Guitar Blashphemy
Well I have never 'murdered' an instrument, even ones I hated, and probally should have been destroyed... sold em instead.
My 2 sins - ruined (resale value at least) a '72 tele (in '79 I think) by replacing the neck and pickups (I didn't like them at the time), and doing my own custom paint job... and the coup de grace was carving my band (at the time) logo into my brothers PRS which I had at the time on the express condition that 'I treat it like gold'.. neddless to say he kicked my ass and I bought the guitar (the ole pay-or-die payment plan)... alas I was young, and yes many chemicals were involved, but I still have both (and I still love how MY tele sounds/plays)... but ultimately belive if it's your guitar, do as you wish (we're talking informed decisions here... not blind stupidity).
BTW- I've done my time... some of it hard :).

Re: Guitar Blashphemy
Hmm.I nearly made that mistake with my '78 Strat.I think the guy who did the job is also at fault! Instead of being greedy or cruel,he should've talked the young doofus out of it.
Ran across a guy in the local shop who wanted to install a D'marzio Super Dist. pickup in a '59 Gretch! The shop guy and I begged the schmuk not to do it. Eventually, the shop guy refused to mangle that classic instrument. As I left, the doofus said that a friend told him to add the D'marzio.I said,"tell your friend that I said...he's a FAGGOT!!"
Sorry 'bout the rant

selling guitar and amp
I have a guitar and amp to sell and have only a vague idea of what they're worth. Can somebody help?
Guitar: 1977 Ibanez Johnny Smith (hollow-body electric)
Amp: 1978 Fender Pro Reverb
Both are in mint condition (literally) because both were used for a few years only while I took lessons and have never been used professionally - for the last 20 years they've been sitting in my closet.
Any info you can give as to what I should be selling them for would be appreciated.

archtop mic problem
I have an old Martin f-hole archtop. How do i mic it to produce a good clean sound? I have an in-hole condenser mic now...it comes out droney on the bottom and tinny on the top. What to do?
Re: archtop mic problem
: I have an old Martin f-hole archtop. How do i mic it to produce a good clean sound? I have an in-hole condenser mic now...it comes out droney on the bottom and tinny on the top. What to do?
Hey Bird Dog... The mic might just be picking up what it hears-- boomy and muffled is what the inside of a guitar sounds like. You might try improving it with some EQ, but to really capture the sound of your guitar with a mic you need to do some careful listening (while somebody else plays your guitar) to find the best spot, and then put a mic there. I mean a mic on a boom. Contact and in-hole mics don't give you the sound of the strings very well. Shure puts out a brochure telling how to mic different instruments, maybe they'd send one if you called them. Which mic depends a lot on whether you're talking about live or recording. Those long, skinny condensers, the same ones that are used for drum overheads (Shure or AKG, or others) are good for recording but I'm not sure about live. Some players use two mics (maybe the one you have plus another out front to get the strings) but you have to be careful about placement to avoid phase cancellation.
Or you could buy my Stratocaster... just kidding. Anyhow, good luck!

Metronome
What is a metronome? someone said something about one and i would like to know what it is
Re: Metronome
: What is a metronome? someone said something about one and i would like to know what it is
A metronome helps you keep time. It makes a loud tocking noise at a specific rate of speed. You can adjust what the speed is depening on how fast or slow you want to play.
Re: Metronome
A metronome is a device that makes a clicking sound. You can adjust the speed - 100 clicks per minute, 110 clicks per minute, ... Most people use them for playing scales, arpeggios, and exersizes cuz it trains you to play accuratly and if you use it for 30 - 60 minutes a day youll play more accuratly when your playing without it too. When your playing along with it you play a specific amount of notes per click - I play 3 note per string scale fingerings so I play 2 strings ( 6 notes - 16th note triplets ) per click at 130 beats per minute with hammer ons and pull offs.
Clapton, Gilmore, Page, Hendrix... and Jeff Beck
(This is actually a response to something Sphencker said in a follow up to "Disapointing trends in Music" but since this is way off the main point I'll start a new thread)
I'm sorry to see that Jeff Beck is not included when these other names are mentioned because he really was the best of any of them. Hendrix was the closest, but the styles are so far apart it's hard to say. Of course this kind of thing is always controversial; people are entitled to their own preferences. But at the time it was widely recognized by guitar players; I think the reason Jeff is less well remembered now is that after the Yardbirds his bands were not as successful as Zepplin or Cream or Hendrix. There were no Top 40 or AOR hits, so the "classic" rock stations don't play him, so a lot of people just aren't aware of him anymore. Jeff's solo albums in the 70's did well commercially, but since they're all instrumental you only hear them on the jazz stations occasionally, and they're really not jazz.
Anyone who want's to know who is who in rock guitar should check out the Yardbird's "Over Under Sideways Down" album-- I still don't know how he made some of those sounds, at the time people just couldn't believe it. I always liked the Jeff Beck Group's stuff, but he wasn't a great bandleader, I think, and he really wasn't among equals (even though the first JBG included Rod Stewart, who had been an unknown before that, and Ron Wood.) And "Blow by Blow", "Wired" and "There and Back" are his great solo albums, everybody should have those. There's some terrible stuff, too-- he has had a tendency to sometimes let other people come in and take over. Avoid "Beck Bogert and Appice", "Live with Jan Hammer", "Flash", "Beck's Garage" and a couple of others,
Well I'm through prozeletizing. I don't blame anyone for not knowing about JB: if the radio isn't playing it how is anyone supposed to find out? But guitar players ought to know; he was (is)the best.
Re: Clapton, Gilmore, Page, Hendrix... and Jeff Beck

OK, the "best in my opinion" and you should have your posts blocked. In my opinion.

Hmm.I think they were all good! And different as well.
Oh yeah,I have Blow by BLow,Wired and There and Back. Guitar Classics!!I use to hangout with my older cousin up at college. He exposed me to some bad,BAD shit back then! Also another classic is Lee Ritenour's Captain Fingers.
Good Luck
Re: Clapton, Gilmore, Page, Hendrix... and Jeff Beck
Actually "..There and Back" was a word game and the right wording was "There and Beck"

Hey man, watch what you say, Bob loves us all!
He does have a point.... try out some gear on your own, don't buy what just IN AT THE TIME. Get the gear that you think sounds good to you.
Y'know, Bob just loves ALL the attention he gets... lets all just go over to his house and drink lots of BEER and jam out.No "Cutting Heads", just a friendly jam... if anybody still knows what that is.
After about 15 beers or so, then you can vomit!!!
Re: vomit (you all make me feel like doing it)
i hope some people have realised that this is all a bit of harmless fun, i hope so cos it sure caused a bit of discussion. i hope i have not really offended anyone. love bob

Enhancer ? and string/fingerboard/fretnoise
Hi...(a) anyone know what an Enhancer - for acoustic guitars is ? & where I might buy one ?
- how much Aust. $ ?
(b) anyone got any ideas on how to significantly minimising fingerboard/string/fretnoise when recording classical guitar ? is there any such thing as a GOOD FLAT WOUND nylon classical guitar string ? I've tried Thomastic..ok at low volume/light attack - but TWWANG at increased volume...any suggests? I've also tried coated nylon strings..they only minimally reduce string/fingernoise.
cheers Dave.
hey guys
hey you lot sorry if i insulted you, when i said "14" year olds i really meant younger people, but i meant the wannabe guitarists, ie that lot who only say they like rock music etc cos they know its fashionable, but theyre secret britney spears fans etc. also that lot who carry guitars around just for the hell of it and i've known people to carry EMPTY guitar cases around, just to pose. sad.
Re: hey guys
Guys carry empty guitar cases for show?!? That's all FUCKED-UP!I'm sure they can get therapy somewhere.
Re: hey guys

Yairi AR-321
Does anyone have any information on a 1984 K Yairi AR-321 acoustic? I bought it used in a local music store here in Halifax, Canada for $175 because it had a nice sound. Still have it, and I was wondering how common this guitar is in North America.
Vintage D'Agostino Flying V (Michael Schenker black/white)
I have a vintage black and white Flying V (Michael
Schenker color scheme) with "D'Agostino of New York"
written on the truss rod cover. There is virtually no information on D'Agostino guitars (i.e. two small paragraphs in 'The Blue Book') and absolutely nothing on this Flying V. Does anyone have any information regarding the history of this guitar?...thx, Dan
Why do my Fenders sound like crap w/ gain????
I'm currently using a Fender Super Reverb RI and an older Pro Reverb. I use a Fulltone Fulldrive 2, Tubescreamer and a Fat Boost. I use the Fulldrive as my main OD then hit the Tubescreamer to kick it up a notch. The Fat Boost always stays on.
When I turn my amps up real loud, say past 3-1/2 - 4 they sound like crap. On 3 they sound pretty damn good. It it because the amp is breaking up and affecting the tone??? Shouldn't sound even better louder??? Or is it just too MUCH gain for these type of amps??? Any thoughts or similar experience with this? Thanks!

That's the way Fenders Amps are. I have an old 71 Princeton Reverb. Sounds great at lower volume.
Sounds OK at higher vollume. Sounds best Mic'd at
lower volume. Recommend to Mic your old Fender Amp through the PA.

Re: Why do my Fenders sound like crap w/ gain????
It could be a couple of things.Strats tend to be very finiky about being overdriven anyway. The single coil pickups aren't really designed for high-output stuff. My Strat doesn't react well with the TS-9 or TS-10. With the DOD 250 or Boss OD-3...it sings! For overdrive stuff,I think Strats have to be matched up with the right amp(tweaked)and/or the right pedal. It's a real tricky issue.
If your amp is breaking up on 3,your master volume may be set too high.I would RELY MORE ON THE GAIN PEDALS instead.Oh yeah, also remember that Fender Twins and Super Twins don't break up well. They're really clean amps. But with the right pedals and some tweakng...she's
all the amp you'll need!
Hope this helps
P.S.you might want to check your speakers. What kind of speakers?? What kind of paper??

SH12 George Lynch in Epi les paul
I cannot get good vo;ume and tone from swapping out Epi stock bridge P/U with SD SH12? Tried several combinations. Sounds thin, and have to run very close to strings to get decent volume to match EPI at neck...
Locking nut to normal nut
Is this possible? I have an '86 Ibanez Roadstar II RG 420 with Edge tremolo. I have blocked the trem and i was wondering if it was possible to replace the locking nut buy some retrofit nut and if so...where can i find these? URLs would be appreciated. Thanks
Re: Locking nut to normal nut
it is possible but its gonna cost you a chunk of change. probably (unless you're lucky) minimum $45 for a custom made nut and another $60 for a set of locking tuners. $105 later you're ready to go, it's just better to leave it alone.
Running Direct without cabinet/head: Which Processor/Preamp is best?
Hi!
I'm trying to decide which preamp/processor and floorboard combination to go with when running direct to the PA for live gigs (not using guitar cabinet or head). I'm trying to decide between the following: Roland GP-100, Tech 21 PSA-1, Boss GT-3, Rocktron Chameleon -Voodoo Valve or Gainiac, Oberheim 1000.
(I tried the POD and didn't like it live). If you have any other suggestions I'd love to hear them.
For those of you who already run direct to the PA (without using guitar/keyboard cabinets or heads), what equipment do you use in your rig, and how do you have your chain set up?
Any advice is appreciated!
Thanks,

Installing "Texas Spec Strat Pickups" in Mexico Fender Strat
My first visit here,
I installed Fender Texas Special Strat Pickups in my Mexico Fender Strat. I combined and sodered all the new black wires to the same area where the original blue wires were sodered. Then I carefully sodered the new neck pup white wire where the orig neck pu went. I did the same with mid and bridge pups. The sound is weak and barely there. Has anyone done this? Do the wires all go to the original locations?
Thanks for any help
Chuck
small hands
im a woman with small hands.. my first 2 fingers on my left hand are 2.5 & 2.75" long.. and my left hand is 6&3/4inches from fingertip to wrist. What guitar models have the thinnest necks? I seem to recall as a kid that electrics were far easier to deal with in that respect. thanks..
Re: small hands
dear elle, do not let this discourage you. there are 3/4 size as well as children's sized classicals that will be best suited to you for preliminary learning purposes. also i have had pupils as young as age five, able to make stretches that lumberjacks were unable to perpetrate. its not the size that matters, its what you do with it.
good luck.

Re: small hands
thanks for responding.. what i'm asking is what guitars - accoustic and electric, have particularly low action and thin necks. Bar chords just seem undoable to me.
