well i finally decided to get a digitech whammy pedal off of ebay, but i have one problem: i dont know whether i should get the whammy original or reissue. the reissue is normally $130 off of ebay vs the original ranging from $350-$450. but ive head that the sound from the reissue is more digital while the original sounds more like youre hjust bending the strings

I bought a nice used Yamaha SE-203 strat style guitar about 12 years ago. I quite like this guitar. Over the past 12 years I have been customizing it to my liking. I added a Schaller free floating bridge with locking head stock. Seymour Duncan SH4-JB twin humbucker at the bridge postion. A Fender Texas Special in the neck position, and stock still, for now, in the middle position. I have no intention to sell this guitar as I love to play it. With that pick up combination I can switch to screamin’ whammy bar Van Halen style music to Stevie Ray Vaughn blues without swapping guitars. I am curious though what it might be worth. I was thinking somewhere in the 250 to 300 dollar range. Too high? Keith

: if you anything about leonardo japanese basses from the 60’s or 70’s please get in touch, thanks. Iam not aware of this bass . What is it? I have a 1971 tele bass. all original. four bolt on neck. sunburst. all original. It is worth about $2500-$3000. IT is the last of the really good Fenders made in america. THis is not the one with the three bolt neck and humbuckers. That came later. They reiontroduced the telecaster bass in 1968. My neck plate says 1966. However. They did not put these into production until 68. If you have a telecaster bass made in the 1960,s it had toi have been made between 68 and 69. It is worth a lot of money if it is all original.

Hi everybody!! I am an electric guitar maker and am currently undertaking the construction of a copy of a Turner Model 1 (Lyndsey Buckingham) guitar. The problem I have is that because of their rarity I can’t find one anywhere to measure up. I’ve got as much info as I can by studying photos on the ‘net and getting my dimensions by using the (known)scale length as a datum. The real difficulty is the actual profiling of the body, this is a "cylindrical" shape according to Rick Turner!! I’ve never actually seen one of the instruments "In the flesh", but I’ve loved them for years and always promised myself I’d build one someday……well, someday has arrived!!! So if anyone knows of the whereabouts of one of these beautiful guitars that I would be able to have a look at, I’d be very pleased to hear from you. I live in Lancashire and would be willing to travel up to 100 miles to see one. I also get up to Edinburgh and down to Hereford quite a lot so anywhere around these areas would be great. Thanks a lot David.

Hi all: I’ve just got back from a 2 week vacation, having booked my hotel online (which I hadn’t done before) on a friend’s recommendation. It turned out very well, so I thought I’d let people know. The site’s called Top Hotel Discounts, and they have good list of <b><a href="http://www.top-hotel-discounts.com/?city=Edinburgh&country=UNITED%2525252525252525252525252525252520KINGDOM">hotels in Edinburgh</a></b>. If you want a good amp with a nice clean, reverb tone and a nice crunch channel i recommend Marshalls, i play an 80 Watt solid state (new approx £320, used £200) and the sound is gorgeous. To check out reviews on all amps, i strongly recommend Harmony Central Database, has all makes etc and easy to see what others people think, sorry can;t remember the address, just do a search on google. If the eagles have a website, check out which type of stuff they use there, that ,may give ya some ideas.

the guitar in the "heart shaped box" video is actually a mosrite copy by a company called Univox. I believe they aren’t made anymore but you can find some on Ebay. the prices aren’t too bad but will probably need adjustments to work decently.

I think I might be able to shed some light on this subject for you wankers. Since I’m usually not available, just look on the web at http://www.olga.net. On the right side of the page, under "Guitar Tabs", click "Everything" On the next page, click "L". On the next page, find "led zepplin" and click it. then the last page comes up and you click the stairway_to_heaven.tab link.

There’s something (now) called an E bow; availible on line and at some stores. It seems(?) to require an electric guitar or at least a pick-up. And with the help of some biomed students at Tulane they came up with a pedal device to depress all open strings and slidable to any fret, so you could play open chords only using a non conventional tuning.

: I’m currently trying to decide between a Line 6 Spyder and a Marshall AVT100, I play like to have a mean metal sound but do a lot of clean stuff aswell, any suggestions? I have used both. Indeed I own a Line 6 Spider for home rehearsing, use a Marshall MG100 head & MG412 cab live, and use a Marshall AVT100 head & 412cab at the rehearsal studios. My mate has a Marshall AVT2000 100w combo, too that I’ve played thru. I like a mucky scooped metal tone plus a chorus-laden clean tone. It kinda depends on what you’ll be doing. If you are playing with a full band go Marshall + 4×12, if all you do is play along with backing go Line 6 spider. If you specifically want a combo, go Line 6. If you want to go head + cab try the Marshall MG head & cab. It’s far less expensive than the AVT and admittedly the range of effects etc isn’t there but the tone is well up there with it and I’m heavily impressed, being a valve addict for many years previously.

I’m playing a Les Paul Standard through a Fender Hot Rod DeVille 4×10. The band I’m in is currently palying covers ranging from older Ozzy (Crazy Train), to Disturbed, Kansas, Old Aerosmith (Mama Kin), Nickleback, Judas Priest, STP, Iron Maiden, etc…. I have an old DOD overdrive, and a DOD Death Metal. The OD is too little, and dosen’t provide enough crunch, the Death Metal is way over the top, and very muddy, not to mention sounds very whiny. I need something to give me a happy medium between the two. For the classic rock stuff, I overdrive the hell outta the tubes, which sounds great, very warm, but very muddy, not clear at all. Any help with equipment to try out, or amp settings would be really appreciated. THANX!!!

if you’re like me and don’t have the money to buy a Line6 or other high end equipment then go with a Digitech Metal Master. On a budget it’s the closest I can get to sounding half way decent. It has a "morph" knob that allows you to do a real good mid sweep for modern and death metal, high and low eq, and a volume pre out. On a budget I think you’ll be much happier than with the DoD crap.

: I’m playing a Les Paul Standard through a Fender Hot Rod DeVille 4×10. : The band I’m in is currently palying covers ranging from older Ozzy (Crazy Train), to Disturbed, Kansas, Old Aerosmith (Mama Kin), Nickleback, Judas Priest, STP, Iron Maiden, etc…. : I have an old DOD overdrive, and a DOD Death Metal. : The OD is too little, and dosen’t provide enough crunch, the Death Metal is way over the top, and very muddy, not to mention sounds very whiny. : I need something to give me a happy medium between the two. : For the classic rock stuff, I overdrive the hell outta the tubes, which sounds great, very warm, but very muddy, not clear at all. : Any help with equipment to try out, or amp settings would be really appreciated. THANX!!!

The best thing I would do is get rid of all that shit and go down to the music store and buy a Line 6 amp. It has great warm tone and great effects. It cured my Problem for the 18 years of playing plus all those dam stomp boxes

It cured my Problem for the 18 years of playing plus all those dam stomp boxes I agree with Dave, but while you are down there try out a Marshall MG head & 4×12 cab and an AVT2000 Marshall head & cab. I was a valve devotee for years but was always caught out by the fact that whenever I switched on my amp (Vox, Marshalls, Orange you name it) I got a different tone every time. Leave the valves to the purists for studio shenanigans and get yourself a decent dig-mod -tranny rig for live work…..they are a damned sight lighter for lugging around too!!! If you really really don’t want to give up your valves, set your amp with all tone controls backed off to minimum and play through a line 6 POD. Hope this helps.

a bass is lower than a guitar. the strings are much thicker thus giving you a lower sound.

i have a yamaha and it has plenty of gain. this may sound stupid but try to tweek the eq’s and not use the presets. they are made to do any sound so you should be able to get what you want. i have 2 mesa pre-amps and it is similar but it still doesn’t get that tube crunch but it is a good amp.

Yo dude, well everything that everyone has said is all good and whatnot, but have you ever heard of Dream Theater, or Liquid Tension? i know what your talking about though, how to make soloing just sound good. Dimebag is good, and Ynywie (Sp? damn sweedes) is good and all, but the thing is Ynywie is so limited. it only goes so far. if i were you i’d check out John Petrucci’s "Rock Discipline" guitarist from Dream Theater. i swear by the video, and after one watch you’ll understand. you need to work on your modes, such as Dorian, and Mixolydian (once again, can’t spell) and just plain old minor scales, and a good ol’ fashioned major scale. there is a life of studying in modes and what have you. but check out the dream theater and for great improvised solo’s Liquid Tension is a must. yea i know its Prog, but its too good to be ignored. later. All notes are blues notes… corny, so that aside check out trufire.com, they have a blues ‘course’ on cd thats pretty decent but kinda pricey, but has some good stuff to practice with to get ‘outta the box’, I’ve only checked out part of it but what I did it was good, the only other way I know is just play along with what you are interested with till it sinks in, just old fashioned practice, practice, practice, till all the scales and modes meld, wish I knew an easier way, and maybe someone else does… good luck. : Can any one suggest a book, tape, video or course for someone going beyond penta and blues scales? Hi I am a guitar reviewer for a new magazine called GRITZ. http://WWW.GRITZ.NET , We have been on line for 3 years and have our 3rd print issue coming out in December. This is not spam as I am recruting no one. I just am introducing myself to the community here. Hope to get in to some discussions and maybe be a positive member of this community. I love Southern rock and blues but appreciate all GOOD music! My fav players, are Duane Allman, Dickey Betts, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Waren Haynes, Dereck Trucks, The Kings, BB, Freddie, and Albert that is!. Hooker, Johnson and all the bleues greats. I also dig Santana, the olde Clapton stuff, and I think many country pickers are among the best around as well! So I have diverse tastes in music from Guy Clark and John Pryne to Buckethead. Who is that cat anyway???? What chops!!!!! Sounds like Via to me? Anyone who reads my columns/reviews I’ll be happy to talk about them. Also if you have any questions ask away. I have built 5 guitars, and have friends at Gibson, Fender, Martin, Taylor and a good buddy building the best guitars in the country right now, Gene Baker of Baker Guitars. http://www.Bakerguitars.com . The best in the country, Yes I said it, I’ve played and owned PRS’s, Anderson’s, McInturff’s and several other boutique high end guitars, but Gene has the thing down pat right now. For the forseeable future anyway! I AM opinionated, that’s my job, but I LOVE to help people too, with dating questions, etc. I buy, sell, trade so I keep all books and pricing up to date. Let’s talk guitars! Michael "RedTail Wolf" Also looking for some answers. Warren Haynes has apparently said he is done with the ABB. I don’t know this to be true but would love someone to talk to me that knows the truth. I love The Mule but The ABB needs Warren too! Latest great record Susan Tedeschi’s new record is in continuous play in my CD player at the moment.

: KAPA Cobra 48/5? Made in the Silversprings Md.area . Looking for detaled information. Hi: try looking at http://www.guitarsite.com there are about 6 or 8 messages about KAPA in there…I used to own a KAPA 4 string bass which I wish I had never parted with. I purchased it new in 1968 or 1969 at a music store I worked at at that time in Worcester MA. At the time I thought it was made offshore- but found out from this site it was actually US made. It had a very small neck for a bass which made it easy to play for someone like me with small hands….it cost me somewhere between $200 and $300 new as I remember, and that was with a decent employee discount over 25% off list. Good luck Bill

This guitar may be a 200 series and must be about 20 years old. There is no paper tag inside but the number G-04 is posted on the inside. It is dreadnaught style, with a scalloped pickguard and bridge. Anyone have any further info on what I just got for $30??? GREAT shape too!!! Oh, the Hohner name goes from top of the head to the bottom in sort of abalone finish. TIA Jocko

Best way I know of is to go to music stores and try as many as possible, then get the neck specs either at the store or look em up online (in this case note the exact model/year at the store as different models/years of the same guitar can have different necks). Now you know what neck is comfortable and you can shop around with this in mind. : i,m lookin to get a guitar . my fingers are kinda short . i need one with a slim neck or i need some advice on neck shapes. any help is very appreciated.

Technically it was Lester Paulfus. Not les paul gibson. He plugged a phonograph needle in to the top of his acoustic and ran that to a small radio to use as an amp. Later Gibson approached Les Paul and they colaborated on the on electric guitars for the Gibson company.

well, pickups are basicaly a magnetron, so you can basically test the wires for continuity, there should be no continuity through the 2 poles in each pickup, the ground and one of the poles should have continuity. not sure specificly which wires (dont own any single coil) but that should help some.

My son is a novice acoustic guitar player. He is conducting a science fair experiment on the how well different types of strings stay tuned. Can someone tell us why bronze and brass strings are used and how the coatings help with the accuacy of the tuning? My guess is the materials and coatings have something to do with corrosion. But, why the swith from nylon to metal? Both are answers are needed. Thanks to anyone who may be able to help.

copper is a relatively soft metal, and it can bend and stretch, causing it to come out of tune. steel and nickel are commonly used which are harder metals. im not sure but i think copper is used on accoustics, becuase it can be struck harder without breaking, allowing you to produce a greater sound.

As I go further in life I begin to realize that there are alot of circumstantial assholes out there. I personally made a guitar. Why do you ask, matt the ass? Because you can’t buy some things. Like an electric guitar with a maple neck through neck with burled mesquite body wings and a mahogony back. Sounds like a dream. And because of the density of the mesquite (which is twice that of mahogony) I loose very little string energy, which means that I get incredible sustain that only artificial sustainer systems can beat, bright crisp highs, trememdous lows, and everything in between. How about I get a job and just go down to gay-tar center and buy something like it? Oh wait, cause no one makes them…why don’t you find out the circumstanc before being a dick!

Just wondering if anyone has played both guitars and can offer some insight on which one may be better or a better value. I know the specs for them and I know the ESP has EMG 81’s and is neck thru where the Ibanez is bolt on (on the cheaper model and passive) and that they are priced almost the same.

      • #81763

I played some ibanez and they suck. Neck thru body will give more sustain, and EMG 81 are at they best if you want to play metal music. But I have to recognize that ibanez tremolo are nice stuf, while I think floyd suck…so, the choise is uneasy, even if I advice you the esp. If you got money, you should buy the ESP Jeff Hanneman with Kahler tremolo (the best of all!!!). I personnally often use a yamaha pacifica 821 dx with EMG pickups in live. It has got a very nice tremolo called RM PRO 3. But the neck is bolt on…however, its the best guitar you’ll find for such a low price. Don’t forget yamaha got mechanical technology…

What styles are they suited for, which musicians are associated with them? I’m attracted to the LP for its beauty, but that’s no reason to buy a guitar, right? 🙂

If the pickups were the same standard as the finsih and craftmanship it would be a truly great guitar. I stuck real Tele 59 ‘pickups and it is a killer now. My friend bought the same one recently. You can’t go wrong. I don’t like the maple standard Teles and havent tried Les Pauls.

One thing, though, you get what you pay for. I had a cheep acoustic that I was trying to learn on and it was real frustrating. Especially since I was new to it and didn’t know that half of my learning problems were related to a badly built and maintained instrument and outside of my control.

I can’t tell you which is the best, but I started with an acoustic and I’m quite glad I did so. Practicing with an acoustic increases your finger strength, and makes it very easy playing an electric guitar later on (if that’s what you want to do).

I can’t say anything about the guitars or their prices because I don’t know these two, and don’t know much about quality vs. price. The best thing you can do is take someone who knows about guitar quality with you and let him/her play them a little. That can help a lot.

I couldn’t agree more. This is typical stuff from a band that knows three chords, and have the fag sound down. Let’s whine instead of sing and make a million while bitching about our pathetic lives. What happened to music. No more good times, just whining. This band is really not even worth posting about. I’d rather talk about Carlos Santana, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, or someone who knows how to play.

Well, I think you Wilco haters are all missing the point. It’s about communication and emotion, not virtuosity. That is what is at the core of this human condition. Fact is, Woody Guthrie had such an amazing effect on music up to the present day (just trace the influences through pop music), because he said something true. That is what Wilco does for many of us. Gives vent to our emotions and takes some real risks (like risking their careers for their gut instinct). Carlos and Kenny are both GREAT players, but even Carlos connects himself with other "songwriters" to help get his message of "love" across. He sees the value in the communication. …And if you listen to HMD a bit closer it feels like an homage to another time that many of us know so well. Wilco fans don’t listen for great licks, they listen for the songs, the voice and some damn great arrangements from a great and personal live band…But given the level of grammar in this forum and the free use of the word "fag" in replacement for "lousy" I have my doubts about any of those facts sinking in. Enjoy your virtuosity…

Ok… I enjoy a heavy metal tune as more tahn most. But I also can appreciate a good lyricist. I love Wilco for that. There is more heart in their music than any heavy metal song. Alt Country bands like Wilco have an ability to hit the heart with their music. In the end that is what counts. I dont know of one metal song that has done that for me. Plus ass hole. Im sure any the Tweedy could kcik your ass in a playing contest. So why dont you jsut shut the hell up.

I am about to get a decent instrument. My guitar is a piece of crap by any standard (cheapest guitar on the store wall) and is very difficult to hold down a bar because of how high the strings are and how bent the neck is. Any guitar in the shop is at least a little (usually a lot) easier to play. So I’ve decided to "graduate" to a new guitar. Here is the crux of my issue: I am not sure if I should go for a nylon-string or stay with a steel-string (with lowered strings). I really love the sound of each. I have never played a nylon string except in guitar shops briefly, but I have always found them beautiful sounding. I have played a steel string for 3 years and I feel the same way about their sound. Of course bar chords and fingerwork (my two goals now) seem to be much easier on a nylon-string so I was thinking maybe to start there to make my immediate goals easier. Then there is this other voice that says to stick with the steel-string until I can play what I am trying to play on it and then see if I still want to play around with nylon strings (i.e. – don’t cop out). Either way, I know I will end up playing both instruments in time. The question plaguing me is which to "start" with. I know it is ultimately up to personal preference, and that increases the dilemma because at this point I don’t have a preference. I really like them both. So what I am hoping to get from any of you out there who play both nylon and steel strings or have moved from playing one to the other is help with any factors that I may be overlooking related to this decision. I now steel is louder, but I also know nylon can be adequately amplified for any solo situation. My specific questions are as follows: 1 – I don’t know, however, if it is feasible to play a nylon string with an electric band (electric bass, keyboards, etc.) or if they’d drown the instrument out. 2 – I think nylon is easier to play, but I also wonder if that would HELP or HINDER me when I move back to steel (i.e. – will my fingers become weaker or lazier? Or more used to the larger space between strings? Or will they be MORE fit and prepared for steel strings? Or neither?) 3 – Also, is a nylon-string actually easier to play overall, when you take into consideration the larger spaces fingers have to span (but I do have large hands and long fingers), or if that is just a misinformed impression I have? As for suitability, I think they both work well with my songs (folk/soul style). I started out playing with my fingers (mostly strumming with my thumb!) on the acoustic 2 years before I ever really took a pick to it recently, but I am unsure which to settle on for my learning process. I won’t grow my fingernails because I’ve tried (to get a better sound from the guitar) and I always manage to bend them back/break them painfully) in day to day life. 4 – Can you pick a classical guitar with fingers instead of fingernails? Would it ever produce a satisfactory tone? 5 – I also don’t know if I could pick a steel-string with my bare fingers and have it ever sound really nice. Is that possible? Should a pick always be used for steel strings and fingernails for nylon? 6 – What options are there for fingerpickers (both nylon-string and steel-string) for getting a brighter tone out the instrument other than fingernails? (IMPORTANT!!!) As you may have noticed by now my head is completely swimming in questions that I have not the experience to answer. I want to know that badly needed dollars are going to the best choice (I am far from rich!) and I NEED any kind of useful direction here. Again, I’ll repeat that I love the sound and feel of both strings the same way that I love my two children: differently, equally, and without comparison between them, so I am lost to "which feels better". If you have stayed with me this far (God bless your soul…or maybe you are just really bored) PLEASE respond with answers to as many of my above questions as you can spare time for and also add any other relevant points I should ponder that I would not be in a position to know. I am all ears (and all confusion) at this point! I am willing to listen to ANY words of advice or caution, wisdom, etc., but PLEASE HELP!!

okay first off, i didnt read all of ur post, but if ur neck is bent, you should get a trus rod adjustment. then get steel strings. they are harder to play with, but they will make ur fingers stronger and also keep more tension on the bridge and neck which should keep the neck from bending back. Also, steel produce a richer sound, and break less, but become dull (tone) after a long time.

Hi everybody and thank you for at least trying to help me by reading this…i have a boss gt-3 guitar processor and a peavey bandit 112 amp….i dont really like the distortion samples of the pedal but i love the distortion in the amp…is it possible to put a nice clean sound with delay and chorus or whatever other effects on the pedal and run it thru my amp so the effects of the pedal mix perfectly with the distortion in the amp?…will the distortion have delay or only the clean sound? that is what i want to do…i want the distortion to have delay to. is it guitar to input of the pedal..out of the pedal to the input of the amp OR……guitar to input of pedal…output of pedal into input effects loops and out of the efx loop back into the pedal?…wich one is the best for what i want to do? thanx alot sorry for the long message miguel@univhearst.édu

i had the same problem but with an alesis pre-amp. if the pedal has an fx loop then i can help you. if the pedal has an fx loop here is what you do. run your guitar into the return on the pedal’s fx loop. then run out of the OUTPUT on the pedal into you amp. do not use FX SEND to go back to you amp. by doing this you bypass the pre-amp signal "meaning distortions and eq’s" thus letting you use the fx in the pedal. like i said if it doesn’t have an fx loop i can’t help you. if you are interested i have an alesis quadraverb fx modual for guitar. it sounds great but i have no need to keep it in my mesa rack anymore. i also have an art modual i am willing to sell. both of these will give the sound you want especially the alesis. my e-mail is [email protected]

The new LP standards are out of Korea but have an 18 point check when they reach the US. Main difference is finishing (neck) and the bulk of the instrument is made of three pieces of mahogany rather than one solid block like the Nashville Gibson LP’s.

You may not get much highend out of your guitar so just play around with it by turning the bass control down a bit and see what you get. Half of my guitar amps are BASS amps but I TRICK em up by changing to a guitar speaker with a high db level and chang some of the capacitors in the amp to a higher value so I can get more treble out of em. the sound of ricky was the combination of his guitar (mosrite sound like nothing else), the type of strings used (probably surf guitarists strings named "chrome"), the way he used to string (open tuning + 4 or 5 strings), the Boss distortion DS-1. i play on mosrite, and i think i’m near finding the same sound, stringing and way of playing. sorry for my poor english, this mail come from France (europe). best

Hi Can someone help me identify my JAp Strat Serial number L007108. It has a USA neck plate with a contoured scallop on bottom horn. Original floyd rose and LAce sensor pickups. incl a red humbucker. I was wondering if it is a factory issue or has someone perhaps changed the neck. The serial number is on the back of the neck near where it is bolted onto the body. It looks like a vintage reissue with a small headstock and vintage tuners. Thank you

Just starting out, went thru a few books and sites, and got coupla questions : 1) can someone REALLY teach themselves to play guitar ? no tutor, just some books and sound clips ? can someone with this experience enlighten me ? 2) Will learning acoustic first help me play better with electric ? Or am I wasting my time ? any rockers here who didnt go thru acoustic ?

Of course you can teach yourself to play, but always better to at least be around someone who already plays to point out stuff when you are having a hard time. You can’t do it with just ‘some books’, I did and remember going through (and still do to a certian extent) 100’s of books on instruction/technique/tab/etc, most of which was garbage (imo), you kinda got to wade through it all and pick out the good stuff and stuff that works for you, thats where as a beginner someone else to help you out is invaluable. As to acoustic?electric it’s up to you, depending on what you want to play (to start), if you wanna rock out go electric as it will give you some gratification more quickly (easy to lean alot of tunes that are easy to play) which will keep your motivation up during the many frustrating periods you will encounter. : Just starting out, went thru a few books and sites, and got coupla questions : : 1) can someone REALLY teach themselves to play guitar ? no tutor, just some books and sound clips ? : can someone with this experience enlighten me ? : 2) Will learning acoustic first help me play better with electric ? I’m afraid to tell you that it’s not worth the time and money. It will definately effect the sound you have now. Plus the cost of a floyd and the cost of having the body properly routed to hold it, as well as the locking nut on the neck…it would be easier and probably better to just get a guitar with one already on it. Your investment in putting on a floyd just isn’t worth it. : i have a schector diamond series, devils elite guitar and i want to get a floyd rose fitted to it. I have played Parkers (Nitefly, P-38, P-40) in stores, compared the 3 sgl-coil versions to Strats. The sound is cleaner and crisper than most units out there; very technically clean, but not sterile. They are incredibly light, versatile – especially with Piezo saddle pickups to capture the acoustic textures of sound. Parkers use innovative designs and parts that nobody else does. They have the best, slickest polished frets, which means the world when playing vibratto and bending strings. I don’t know how well they hold resell value, it should do reasonably well. I would expect $1000 for a used Nitefly to be a good deal. A guy in our band has a P-38 (configured like a Strat with a Piezo), and it seems to perform well, although it doesn’t sound like a classic Strat. It is not the best guitar for a hacker, because it plays so clean and versatile; it is well fit for the player who has playing skills in a variety of styles. I’v been playing guitar for a while now and i would like to know what is a good cheap software that i can either buy at a local store or prob download it for free.. I need it for recording and making my own music..Someone told me that a drum machine is not really good for adding drums, bass and vocals and what not..And that a software would be alot better. I tried to download some drum machine’s from kazaa but its more for techno i guess, and its really complicated..I would like to get a pretty easy understandable software that is made for guitar.. It would be of great help, any suggestions will be good. thanxs

I think either one will do the job. The TD Strat has an Invader pickup. Very high output….great if you are overdriving a tube amp.The Epi is a little on the warm side but sounds ok through a dist. pedal. It is really a matter of personal taste. Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols used a Les Paul Custom mostly while BJ Armstrong uses strats…Personal Taste!!!

Hi. I haven’t played around with too many BOSS pedals (or other brands) so I need to know–can anyone recommend a BOSS or other pedal for great clean tone? I want powerful, biting, full, shimmering clean tone (think of the beginning of Springsteen’s "Glory Days") that ISN’T fuzzy or too "metal". I often have to plug in with a direct line for recording, so I need something that sounds like playing loud and clean through a Fender amp. (By the way, I play a Telecaster.) I prefer something fairly inexpensive and easy to find, as I live in Taiwan and there isn’t a lot of choice for equipment. MUCH THANKS!

first of all I would go to mucisains friend to have them mail you a christmas issue because it has many ood sstarting guitar packages. if you don’t want to buy a package I sugest a good epiphone or squier and a fender or marshell 10 or 15 watt amp

I defintely agree with looking into ‘low end’ fender and epiphone models. And if you do know someone who plays take them along or heve them look around on ebay, you can usually get a decent fender made in mexico (MIM) telecaster or squire strat for under $200, and they play pretty well and are easy to setup/maintain/modify (basically take care of). Another option/fender to consider is a stratacoustic, it is an acoustic/electric and though I personally don’t care one bit for them, I gave mine to my 13 yo nephew last year and he loves it, and it costs about $150. I would stay away from guitars with trems, i.e. guitars with floyd rose trems especially, as a cheap one might make somee cool sounds, and look cool too, but they can cause alot of headaches for a beginner (anyone for that matter) and a guitar with a good trem will probally cost more than you want to spend. Theres another company Jay Turser that makes pretty decent copies of the most ‘popular’ models, and I have played several and the quality was suprisingly good for the price… just another option. : I have a 13 year old son who wants an electric guitar for Christmas. It’s going to cost you $250 to get started. Many manufacturers are making "Starter Kits" – an electric guitar, a practice amp, straps and chords for that price. It is important to have an instrument that inspires the player, and getting the string height adjusted to it’s prime height will make the instrument play easily. That is called the set-up. Also, consider making up your own "kit", by buying a $129-$150 guitar from, say the Squire line, adding an amp modeling unit (such as Behringer V- $149, a Johnson J-station $149, or a Digitech Genesis $99) that has tons of amp models and sound effects built into it. Those will inspire you a while lot more than a dinky 10 watt amp with an 8" speaker. Buy a headphone for $30 and let the student learn the electric guitar in silence (to you), but thru a cranked-up Marshall amp to him! Then when he gets good, connect the amp modeler unit to your stereo speakers at home, serve food and sell tickets. If the whole plan goes kaput to him, sell the kit to one of a 1000 college students living in a dorm that want to hear themselves play thru a big amp sound, but can’t afford to disturb the rest of the dorm with the noise. WayneO : : I defintely agree with looking into ‘low end’ fender and epiphone models. Let me start by saying I am not a fan of Fender guitars but they have a decent line of entry level guitars at very reasonable prices. $175-$300. If he is anything like usual 14 year olds he likes heavier music, so make sure you get him one with at least 1 humbucker pickup.Single coil pickups will not have the power or sustain needed for heavy music. The Tom Delonge Squier Strat is not a bad starter guitar, around $250 (made in China or something) The Fender Tom Delonge Strat (made in Mexico) I think is around$479. Epiphone also makes a good line of beginner guitars. Guitar Center has full inventory of both manufacturers. A small practice amplifier will cost between $69-$120. Good luck and my best advice is to bring someone along who has some experience buying guitars because the salesmen are real sharks when a Mom or Dad comes in around Christmas time. They know most parents are clueless about price and quality and will stear you to something that will put the most money in their pocket.

A truly sad day in history as far as I am concerned. I also heard they (FENDER) fired Kevin Easton, whom I understand has been at Jackson from the beginning. You can read about it on the Fender website(www.fender.com)and in it they state that they have no plans to change the Jackson line "too much". Glad I got my USA Jacksons already, I dont have to worry about paying for an inferior product(i.e. Fender built). But taht is just my opinion and you know what they say about opinions……..

I didn’t get fired. I just didn’t take the job offered to me in arizona. No big deal, I’ve opened my own shop called http://www.EastonGuitars.com and we’re doing pretty well. Just thought I’d square up the loose end.

This is a great day in history as far as i I am concerned.A sad fact of progress is that some will get fired.the Jackson co. must have problems’s fender to buy them out.Being a fender fan all my life I know the level of quality demand from all ther branches.I can see only improvement in electrodynamics and looks in store for Jackson.Think of the jump in value for those of us that own an original jackson.this is only my opinion, and every one I know.

Fender said they wouldn’t screw with Guild when they bought them. Well, Fender has totally screwed up Guild, discontinuing models, poor material and build quality, taking shortcuts, introducing Dearmond and then screwing that up. I wish Fender would just make Strats, Teles, P basses, J basses, tube amps, and just leave the rest of the shit alone. And now it’s their turn to screw Jackson up. Buy your Jacksons now because they just won’t be the same. Let’s see, how about squier by Jackson? And build them in China, yeah, that’s the ticket!

No Shit!!!I have my 3 USA Jacksons. RR1,KV2 andKE2 but I have been looking for a WR1. Now I guess I will have to buy a used one because I wont buy one made by Fender. When I go to Guitar Center the walls are plastered with mass produced Fender crap from all over the planet. The Jackson section usually has one Soloist, Kelly and Rhoads. Been hoping for that elusive USA Jackson Warrior to show up. Now forget it.

I see in many guitar references the letter c.followed by a date ie c.1964. What does the (c.) designate?

        (c) is the copywrite year, c. is short for ‘circa’ which is the year (or close to it) when it was written, also on the net things arent consistent, so I would just look at it as a reference as to when the song was written. : I see in many guitar references the letter c.followed by a date ie c.1964. It usually is in reference to the approximate date a song was composed, or something was made, if the exact date is unknown. If it is thought that the item in question was from around 1850 they would use c.(short for circa, which means ‘about’) and print c1850, or circa 1850. Jim

Suggestion: Read this entire message carefully! (Print it out or download it.) Follow the simple directions and watch the money come in! It’s easy. It’s legal. And, your investment is only $6.00 (Plus postage) IMPORTANT: This is not a rip-off; it is not indecent; it is not illegal; and it is virtually no risk – it really works!!!! If all of the following instructions are adhered to, you will receive extraordinary dividends. PLEASE NOTE: Please follow these directions EXACTLY, and $50,000 or more can be yours in 20 to 60 days. This program remains successful because of the honesty and integrity of the participants. Please continue its success by carefully adhering to the instructions. You will now become part of the Mail Order business. In this business your product is not solid and tangible, it’s a service. You are in the business of developing Mailing Lists. Many large corporations are happy to pay big bucks for quality lists. However, the money made from the mailing lists is secondary to the income which is made from people like you and me asking to be included in that list. Here are the 4 easy steps to success: STEP 1: Get 6 separate pieces of paper and write the following on each piece of paper; PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR MAILING LIST. Now get 6 US $1.00 bills and place ONE inside EACH of the 6 pieces of paper so the bill will not be seen through the envelope (to prevent thievery). Next, place one paper in each of the 6 envelopes and seal them. You should now have 6 sealed envelopes, each with a piece of paper stating the above phrase, your name and address, and a $1.00 bill. What you are doing is creating a service. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY LEGAL! You are requesting a legitimate service and you are paying for it! Like most of us I was a little skeptical and a little worried about the legal aspects of it all. So I checked it out with the U.S. Post Office (1-800-725-2161) and they confirmed that it is indeed legal! Mail the 6 envelopes to the following addresses: Mailing Adresses Jeff Millan 1113 N. 19 ½ McAllen,TX 78501 R. Overton P.O. Box 18818 So. Lake Tahoe, CA 96151 KEVIN LEE 8377 APT. I MONTGOMERY RUN RD. ELLICOTT CITY MD 21043 Stephanie Hicks 1283 Evening Canyon Henderson NV 89014 Tia Loske 40 Hancock St. Ft. Plain, NY 13339 Richard Horman 1731 Frost Ave. Maplewood, MN 55109 STEP 2: Now take the #1 name off the list that you see above, move the other names up (6 becomes 5, 5 becomes 4, etc…) and add YOUR Name as number 6 on the list. STEP 3: Change anything you need to, but try to keep this article as close to original as possible. Now, post your amended article to at least 200 newsgroups. (I think there are close to 24,000 groups) All you need is 200, but remember, the more you post, the more money you make! This is perfectly legal! If you have any doubts, refer to Title 18 Sec. 1302 & 1341 of the Postal lottery laws. Keep a copy of these steps for yourself and, whenever you need money, you can use it again, and again. PLEASE REMEMBER that this program remains successful because of the honesty and integrity of the participants and by their carefully adhering to the directions. Look at it this way. If you are of integrity, the program will continue and the money that so many others have received will come your way. NOTE: You may want to retain every name and address sent to you, either on a computer or hard copy and keep the notes people send you. This VERIFIES that you are truly providing a service. (Also, it might be a good idea to wrap the $1 bill in dark paper to reduce the risk of mail theft.) So, as each post is downloaded and the directions carefully followed, six members will be reimbursed for their participation as a List Developer with one dollar each. Your name will move up the list geometrically so that when your name reaches the #1 position you will be receiving thousands of dollars in CASH!!! What an opportunity for only $6.00 ($1.00 for each of the first six people listed above) Send it now, add your own name to the list and you’re in business! —DIRECTIONS —– FOR HOW TO POST TO NEWSGROUPS———— Step 1) You do not need to re-type this entire letter to do your own posting. Simply put your cursor at the beginning of this letter and drag your cursor to the bottom of this document, and select ‘copy’ from the edit menu. This will copy the entire letter into the computer’s memory. Step 2) Open a blank ‘notepad’ file and place your cursor at the top of the blank page. From the ‘edit’ menu select ‘paste’. This will paste a copy of the letter into notepad so that you can add your name to the list. Step 3) Save your new notepad file as a .txt file. If you want to do your postings in different settings, you’ll always have this file to go back to. Step 4) Use Netscape or Internet explorer and try searching for various newsgroups (on-line forums, message boards, chat sites, discussions.) Step 5) Visit these message boards and post this article as a new message by highlighting the text of this letter and selecting paste from the edit menu. Fill in the Subject, this will be the header that everyone sees as they scroll through the list of postings in a particular group, click the post message button. You’re done with your first one! Congratulations…THAT’S IT! All you have to do is jump to different newsgroups and post away, after you get the hang of it, it will take about 30 seconds for each newsgroup! **REMEMBER, THE MORE NEWSGROUPS YOU POST IN, THE MORE MONEY YOU WILL MAKE!! BUT YOU HAVE TO POST A MINIMUM OF 200** That’s it! You will begin receiving money from around the world within days! You may eventually want to rent a P.O.Box due to the large amount of mail you will receive. If you wish to stay anonymous, you can invent a name to use, as long as the postman will deliver it. **JUST MAKE SURE ALL THE ADDRESSES ARE CORRECT.** Now the WHY part: Out of 200 postings, say I receive only 5 replies (a very low example). So then I made $5.00 with my name at #6 on the letter. Now, each of the 5 persons who just sent me $1.00 make the MINIMUM 200 postings, each with my name at #5 and only 5 persons respond to each of the original 5, that is another $25.00 for me, now those 25 each make 200 MINIMUM posts with my name at #4 and only 5 replies each, I will bring in an additional $125.00! Now, those 125 persons turn around and post the MINIMUM 200 with my name at #3 and only receive 5 replies each, I will make an additional $626.00! OK, now here is the fun part, each of those 625 persons post a MINIMUM 200 letters with my name at #2 and they each only receive 5 replies, that just made me $3,125.00!!! Those 3,125 persons will all deliver this message to 200 newsgroups with my name at #1 and if still 5 persons per 200 newsgroups react I will receive $15,625,00! With an original investment of only $6.00! AMAZING! When your name is no longer on the list, you just take the latest posting in the newsgroups, and send out another $6.00 to names on the list, putting your name at number 6 again. And start posting again. The thing to remember is: do you realize that thousands of people all over the world are joining the internet and reading these articles everyday?, JUST LIKE YOU are now!! So, can you afford $6.00 and see if it really works?? I think so… People have said, "e;what if the plan is played out and no one sends you the money? So what! What are the chances of that happening when there are tons of new honest users and new honest people who are joining the internet and newsgroups everyday and are willing to give it a try? Estimates are at 20,000 to 50,000 new users, every day, with thousands of those joining the actual internet. Remember: play FAIRLY and HONESTLY and this will really work.

All you have to do is jump to different newsgroups and post away, after you get the hang of it, it will take about 30 seconds for each newsgroup! : : **REMEMBER, THE MORE NEWSGROUPS YOU POST IN, THE MORE MONEY YOU WILL MAKE!! BUT YOU HAVE TO POST A MINIMUM OF 200** : : That’s it! You will begin receiving money from around the world within days! You may eventually want to rent a P.O.Box due to the large amount of mail you will receive. If you wish to stay anonymous, you can invent a name to use, as long as the postman will deliver it. : : **JUST MAKE SURE ALL THE ADDRESSES ARE CORRECT.** : : Now the WHY part: Out of 200 postings, say I receive only 5 replies (a very low example). : : Remember: play FAIRLY and HONESTLY and this will really work.

Man, thats the basics of the basics. but listen, to tremolo pick you have to rest your thumb must be touching the string above it, DO NOT use your wrist when you pluck, tremolo is all about picking the strings without using much amount of force so fast picking can be done with ease and less stress from the arm. and use your thumb to pick the string, make sure the pick is no more then a millimeter below the string. Take it easy and good luck man.

: : I can’t get the right way or sound when i try to tremolo pick, and right now im covering a song from staind called mudshovel and it has alot of tremolo picking in it… Any ideas would be good … : : thanxs The tremolo picking technique is actually simple. It has to do with the way you hold your pick and using your entire arm rather than your wrist as you would in standard picking. Take your pick and turn your thumb so that the rest of you fingers all slightly graze the rest of the strings, only allowing the very tip of the pick or side of it to go below the string surface, so the pick glides over the string, use your arm, not just your wrist for movement. Practice on the low E until you get comfortable. This is an electric guitar technique, played on the acoustic, the sound will be alot lower using this style of picking. So, basically, don’t pick the way you are now…change everything for tremolo, it’s easy to readjust your pick by moving your thumb and just using your wrist. Good luck and keep picking.

I’am just learning to play the Guitar, and I play left handed. I can’t seem to find any study meterial besides a cord chart. Can anyone suggest where I can get my hands on other left hand study guides. Robert.

Are you playing on a lefty guitar, or a righty upside down ? Either way any material should be suitable as finger positioning is the same just substitute left for right. If you are playing a guitar set up for a right handed player lefty then you will have a problem finding material, although there are plenty of great players who have played that way, as you are just learning you should just reverse the strings and then you can use any material out there to learn. : I’am just learning to play the Guitar, and I play left handed. i’m having difficulty developing picking speed. I tend to rest the palm/heal of my hand on the top string. When playing chromatic scales from low to high, I find that I need to reposition my hand so as to be able to reach the bottom strings. Not a problem when moving back up. Should I not be resting my hand on the upper strings? Is this a bad habit I’ve developed? Thanks

I usually rest my hand lightly on the low string side of the bridge, only touching the strings when muting.

I find I do the same, resting on the top of the bridge, just move your hand back more on the bridge, you’ll get better muting control too, and if it’s a trem you can get produce some nice subtle trem while picking, when picking further up the neck I find I anchor my pinky below the high e or against the neck or pickup (depending on the guitar) picking fast and it makes tapping and pinching easier too, for me at least. : I usually rest my hand lightly on the low string side of the bridge, only touching the strings when muting.

can the pentatonic minor scale pattern be played at any position on the neck? How does it combine with the chords your playing?

There are 5 pent scale patterns. Same scales, different positions on the neck for each key. I would suggest you memorize the 5 patterns, then apply them to each key. E, F, G etc. You will probably favor 2 or 3 patterns when playing in a given key, but you should know all 5. I’m sure you can find the 5 patterns on the net, or buy a scale book at your local store. have fun!

Yup, an example is the caged pattern with the root on the 6th string, this pattern is ‘movable’, just match the root note to the key (or chord) you are in and use the pattern at that position. The easiest way to hear the relationship to chords is to play an F, G, or A barre chord and then play the pattern after the chord, this is ‘easy’ with these chords because your hand is already in position to play the scale, and then after awhile just learn the ‘formulas’ for the scales which for the pen-minor is 1-b3-4-5-b7, so if you are in C the notes are just C-Eb-F-G-Bb-C and then you can just play it anywhere on the neck you want, and after you learn all your scales and modes and theory stuff then just play what sounds good to you at the time. : can the pentatonic minor scale pattern be played at any position on the neck? : How does it combine with the chords your playing?

I need tabs or chords for the song "Por Amor." I know there are a few different ones, but i don’t know the artist. Here are some of the lyrics to help you out: "Por amore se han creado los hombres en la faz de la tierra. Por amor hay quien haya querido regular una estrella. Por amor, fui una vez al calbario con una cruz acuestas, aquel que tambien por amor entrego el alma entera." Necesito las etiquetas o los acordes para la canción "Por Amor." Yeah, its time to buy a better guitar. I got a cheap yamaha, and i’m really looking at the nitefly. I dig the shape, and innovative construction, and the reviews over all are great, but i thought i’d throw it out for you guys to chew on, and see what you had to say about it. Nice to have a good opinion. don’t be afraid to trash it if you think its crappy though… i don’t wanna waste my cash. I’ve got a hardtail, 2 words: smooth and versitle, the neck is just perfect, Only complaints are, split coils a little thin for my tastes (but easy enough to tweak), kept hitting the knobs until I got used to the placement, a little uncomfortable to play sitting, but it’s so light why sit. : Yeah, its time to buy a better guitar. I play a Gibson ES175 on the neck pickup for the jazz sound. I also like to play Ventures music, but the Gibson does not have anywhere near a Fender sound even on the bridge pickup. Does anyone know of a pickup I could install at the bridge position in order to get closer to a Fender sound? Hollow body, arch top, maybe not possible? I appreciate any suggestions.

I’ve heard some 355’s get ‘close’ to a fender tone using the varitone/phase sw., but thats a jazz box and the sound you ‘pay’ for, I would mess around with splitting, phase, and a varitone first and see if ya can get something you like on the bench withot doing anything permenant till youre sure, as to pickups what kinda fender sound are you looking for ?? : I play a Gibson ES175 on the neck pickup for the jazz sound. I have both and 606 is way better than the 505, specially because you can actually get a nice controlled wah sound on the 606 instead of the automatic non-controlled wah-cry of the 505, you can also control the volume, delay and reverb, pitch and other stuff all with just the expression pedal. Not counting that the 606 has more distortions/patches than the 505.

I have a Sigma Guitar Model DM-2B which was recently given to me as a gift in absolutely perfect condition. Yesterday it was broken on an airplane by the baggage handlers. Sigma DM 2 is an inexpensive guitar. The DM 1 retails for about $225, I would suspect the DM 2 to be $275 or so. Unfortunatley, a lot of airlines won’t let you carry on a guitar anymore without buying an extra ticket. I ship mine ahead of time Fed Ex. (Lots of packing material) They haven’t trashed one yet.
