Kind of depends on your musical tastes and playing style. Some people like a loose sloppy feel and go for really light strings. Some like more depth and feeling and go for a heavier guaged set. The way it works is the heavier guage you put on the harder it will be to press the strings down but the more kenetic energy that will be converted to electrical output. The lighter the strings the less electrical output but you can press them down easier. If you hessitant about what to use just ask for a set of 9's. Try them out and if you feel you want a little more uuummmphhh, the try 10's next time you change the strings.

they use a shitload of pedals and distortions mixed and have marshal stacks and all that good shit but i have a 120watt combo(crate)and an ibanez rg and a digitech and it crunches really good i would recoment a digi its better than buying a buntch of pedals and spending lots of cash also i would get some duncan invaders or emg pickups.

It's really more about looks than anything. However myself I use open coil. Because I like the look and I really cannot tell that big of a difference in tone. I however will recomend a few open coil humbuckers. I use Carvin M-22's and Carvin C-22's. In my strat I use Seymore Duncan George Lynch Screaming Demon.
