I have an old electric steel guitar with the number S265 stamped on the top of the neck. Someone said this might be a Supro. (My dad thought it might be Rickenbacker). Does anyone know what this guitar is by this number and would you know the value? Thanks

greetings to all musicians out there! I am thinking about posting my guitars for sale on ebay, and was searching a consensus on resale price tag. All items are used. An epiphone les paul with gibson tag, with complimentary strap and sticker on the guitar minor scratches. Fender dg-11e blk accoustic/electric, the electric plug is loose minor scratches. Yamaha fg-340 accoustic old strings. I welcome all constructive advises and is grateful for your help.

well, as for the lp, i hope that the sticker your refering to isnt on the body of the guitar, as that would greatly reduce its resale price. i would think of a reserve of about 275-300. be sure to specify what type of pickups are on it, as they offer a few different types. For the accoustic fender, you couldnt hope on making too much money off of that one. it sells for about 200 online, and with about 30 dollars shipping to add, people would be unrealistic to buy one used for much more than 100-130, because they could just buy a new one. then with the electronic problems, which are pricey to fix, it lowers the price considerably. if you cannot find a buyer, however, i happen to be looking for an acoustic such as that one, and if you would like an offer you can feel free to email me pics at [email protected]. as for the yamaha, im not sure, to be honest. good luck with your ebaying, and i am experienced with selling guitars on ebay if you have any questions.

How do I lock the tremolo to not use the whammy bar ? ? ?
-
October 7, 2003 at 5:50 am #94843AnonymousGuest
: How do I lock the tremolo to not use the whammy bar ? ? ? There is a tension adjustment allen screw on the side of the bridge. If you adjust it tight enough the bridge pulls back against the strings 100% so its locked in place… unless you really push the bar down. Normally this adjustment screw lets you set it to tighten or slacken the strings. Unlike many vibrato bridges the wonderbar is very stable and controllable.

I bought a Guitar from a Pawnshop for $50. It is a apple red Squire Stratocaster made in India. The reason I question this is because for one it sounds great, even better than some of the new fender guitars. And second I think the neck might have been replaced because of a broken truss rod or something. HOW DO YOU IDENTIFY A GUITAR IF THE NECK AND SERIAL # IS REPLACED?

They sell new for about £200 (I dunno, $300?) so I would say £100-£140 depending on condition

Hello, I work in a music store, in the U.S. We recently had a Stagg representative stop in to see if we wanted to become a Stagg guitar/bass dealer. He told us that the instruments were made in China, but the company is Belgium. He brouht some sample instuments for us to try. Good quality for a low to mid priced instrument. The only other thing I can tell you is that I wrote down two web addresses. Here they are, I hope this helps. http://www.emdmusic.com & [email protected] Good Luck.

HI, I heard that these guitars are made in China but labeled as a Benelux product. That is all I have heard of.Which model did you try and did you like it?I was impressed with the stratocaster model with metalic colours and maple neck ,3 single coils. The neck was a light V-shape and the joint with a body looked as a Fender custom shop job,the sound was better than USA standard strat and the hum was much much better resolved.Hope I helped. Does anyone know if the C-1 Classic has a dual action truss rod? I recently bought one and it didn’t have quite enough relief for me, so I decided to loosen the truss rod a bit. Anyway, when I went to do it, it only went about a quarter turn then it got real loose. I decided to turn a little more and it started to get tight. Not like it was at the end of the threads or anything, it was still turning fairly easily but it had tension again. I’ve never had a guitar with a dual action truss rod and wasn’t sure if that’s what this guitar has or if maybe there is something wrong with it. I’ve searched and searched and can’t find any info about it. I know some of the other Schecter models have them but wasn’t sure about this one. Any input would be appreciated.

I have a 1975 Ibanez Deluxe 59’er. It is all original and I play it every day. It has been going out of tune lately because it needs new machine heads. I am trying to find replacements, but have had a hard time finding replacements that will fit exactly. I don’t want to mess it up. If you, our anyone has an idea where I can order replacement machine head that are replicas of those on my 59’er. Please let me know. My email address is [email protected]

If the guitar has cherry back and sides, split parallelogram inlays, and a fancy pickguard with a pearl dove on it, then the guitar is a 1970s Alvarez lawsuit copy of a Gibson Dove. Gibson sued and Alvarez drastically changed the model. Can U provide a description of the guitar that you have – include such factors as condition and playability. An Alvarez copy of a Gibson Dove in very good to excellent condition sells for $200 to $300 on ebay. Richard : I have this guitar that was left to me by my father in law. I was curious if this guitar came tuned in B, or does it come in E and it can still stay tight as low as B or even A. I was always thought to believe that 7 strings came tuned with the top string being low B, therefore dropping to low A (as like you would drop D on a standard guitar). My buddy is telling me that these guitars come tuned in E like all standard guitars. I just need to know that truth damnit…LOL! Thanks, Eric

I might have one — i have the GP-16 but it could take a few days to find the manual. I could photocopy and mail it or possibly scan and email… assuming I find it. Send me an email if you’re still looking. : Hey anyone out there have a copy of the Roland GP 16 that they can email or know of a site that I can download one from. hey there. I saw your FAQ, I’m from New Zealand, and I have an RE 301. I am interested in selling it. The exchange rate would be going in your favour somewhat. The unit is in pretty good all round condition, but will need a new tape (cheap over there) and might need a service eventually. But the heads have heaps of wear left in them. Let’s hear from you.

(looks aren’t that important) unfortunatly you can’t find a used voodoo sg anywhere because it is a new guitar… there for you won’t find it anywhere for less than 899 and 700 if your lucky…. but good luck to you because i played this guitar and i don’t think there is anyone who is stupid enough to get rid of this guitar with its extreamly smooth sound and good action… later

-
September 30, 2004 at 11:11 pm #83793AnonymousGuest
excel guitars (ecsuse me) sucks. Ihave one and when are playing a solo om\n the lower frets i doesn’t sound it’s just comming a click sound. it is to small and a bad neck it’s to "fat" and it is soft.
-
October 13, 2003 at 3:17 am #95558AnonymousGuest
well i bought one. I dunno It aint great but yeah, its really cheap. I really dont like it much. I perfer Gibsons or fenders. You can find really cheap gibsons online. They’re quality guitars.
-
December 11, 2003 at 8:47 am #102922AnonymousGuest
i have an excel too…the strings that come stock with it are terrible, and that is partly what makes it not sound great….i bought some elixir nanoweb strings ($15), when i put those on, it made it sound really close to my freind’s ibanez, which he spent about $325 for. i bought the nanoweb strings as opposed to the original polyweb version because of the mellow sound. the polyweb strings have a richer sound to them. it’s all personal prefrence, really. but i like this guitar other than the steel frets arent polished as well as higher-priced guitars, which brings out a "twang" every now and then. not too bad for $89 though.

I own an AF40V electric guitar and would like to hear from someone else that has one. How rare are they becoming? Do they hold any value?
-
December 17, 2003 at 3:15 am #80349AnonymousGuest
I have one also. They seem to be quite rare I think there were about 300 sold worldwide. They hold their value considering they are korean made and only retailed for around $800, they sell for more than that now. The black and red ones are much rarer than the black and silver ones. Thats about all I know, its nice to talk to another owner of the AF40-V.

It sounds like the harmonic minor scale (natural minor scale with a major seventh. It’ll probebly be in E harmonic minor, but I don’t know that for sure. And the next months the’ll be touring. Check their site (www.metallica.com) for tour dates.

I would just file them to the desired size, then touch up the locking nut to fit snug. : I have floyd rose locking nut problem: the holes are more narrow than my strings are, it looks like this: : —\__/–\_/–\/—-, my strings are thicker (0.053) and i need them cut so they can be like this: : —\____/-\___/–\_/—-. Got the idea? : I want to try GOI polishing paste, should I do it? Do you know any other way out??? thank you.

Andy a friend and I went to the show Sat. Your drummer I must say did a great job even with a hurt arm. I play Drums too and I did a show with a broken arm. I guess what I’m saying is it’s true when they say the show must go on. ha ha. Great show and thanks for being a good roll model for my style of drumming and the music that I write. I Dig Odd Time fifures like the Pilgram… Have a great time on your tour. Wish I could be Drumming for you. I know… You can’t have everything… But why not ha ha Gruve E. Ramirez

I have a Hot Rod Deville 212. Has 3 channels. I understand that turning the drive channel up increases gain and overdrive. Is this done to the tubes thru the preamp? Is the sound from the drive channel, with some gain applied, at a medium/low volume, identical to the overdrive you’d get cranking up the clean channel?

just got a Yamaha RGX and notice it has Jumbo Frets. anybody know how these differ from ordinary frets and if they make the tone better? thanks Mike
-
August 26, 2003 at 2:17 am #90850AnonymousGuest
Some of this "me" already stated but basically they’re good for bending and sustain so when your bending your strings the tone will be stronger and last longer.
-
August 26, 2003 at 5:01 pm #90958AnonymousGuest
Yeah mike is right about the bending (I had it backwards now that I think about what larger wire should do)… last one I played probally just needed some dressing and why it fretted out. : Some of this "me" already stated but basically they’re good for bending and sustain so when your bending your strings the tone will be stronger and last longer.

jumbos are just larger and in general make fretting easier (to me at least), they affect bending and fret out easier and probally a few other things but I’ve never cared for em so don’t have any guitars with em, all in all they won’t affect your tone much so if you like em stick with em. : just got a Yamaha RGX and notice it has Jumbo Frets. anybody know how these differ from ordinary frets and if they make the tone better? : thanks : Mike

Hi, I just bought a PAESOLD Model#P230 12string guitar from a Goodwill for $40. It’s in good shape with normal 12string stress cracks. I took a chance, bought it,replaced missing nut, pegs and strings. Sounds great. Can anybody help me evaluate this guitar for price and collectability. Any info appreciated. I have a Guild G 37. Guild briefly put out a line of good quality guitars, but without all the inlays and sparkles of their normal guitars, in the early 1970s. I suppose it was partly in response to the invasion of underpriced Japanese guitars that was then taking over the music store market. Sound quality and construction appears to equal Guild’s much more expensive guitars of the time; they just aren’t as pretty.

I have a guild G-37 that I bought new in 1974. It is a beautiful guitar and bombproof. Despite moving across the US an abroad over 30 years (my God has it been that long?) There is not a single crack on the guitar. It is a loud and bright sounding guitar. sometimes too bright for me, but I can’t bear to part with it. It is a great mid priced guitar if you like a bright and loud sound, and also a guitar that is bullet proof.

I’m seeking advice about purchasing a guitar for my 16 year old nephew. My nephew is an advanced guitar player. He currently play a B.C Rich Warlock(Bronze)series. He’s been thinking of getting another guitar. He wants to get a Gibson and is firm on it.Since ,his birthday is coming up I decided that as a birthday present I was going to get him a Gibson. I’m looking for a Gibson that is reasonably priced.I’m willing to pay between $500-$800 dollars.I’m looking for one that has a super fat tone, that is aggressive for maximum metal playing and has great humbucker pickups. I would really appreciate your advice and whatever information you could provide me with. Thank You Very Much. Sincerely,Kamila

Go with a Gothic Les Paul. You might have to go Epiphone though. The Gibsons might be out of your price range. But check them out. I think they will work best for what you’re wanting to do.

On the Les Pauls of the 70’s The 1st and 5th number represent the year, the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th are the number of the day of that year and finally the last three tell what factory location it was made. Be it Kalamazoo or Nashville. I believe the 570’s area means it was made in Nashville, I have one and the #572 and it was made in Nashville. The gibson website explains how to identify your guitar based on the serial #. Hope I helped.

I am a host on http://www.guitartricks.com, i have over 220 riffs you can listen to and they are tabed and its free if you want to check it out, thanks.

I have a friend that has lost three fingers on his left hand. He use to enjoy playing the guitar but is unable now. I’ve been told that there is a way to tune the guitar so he could use one finger (I’m assuming accross all the strings) to change notes. Is this true? If so, can someone tell me how? I’ve never touched a guitar so please explain in simple terms. Much Thanks, This will lift his spirits.

most open tunings make for "single finger" barre chords, start out with open G, D tunings, the most common… get him a slide :). I saw a bluegrass banjo player with missing fingers, he just played with his ‘nubs’ over the top of the neck and was awesome so tell him not to give up, and with 2 fingers left (to hold a pick or finger pick) he could always change to lefty (if he is righty) and fret regularlly with his right hand. : I have a friend that has lost three fingers on his left hand. i completely agree with the first post… normally when you strum a guitar ‘open’, or without the left hand fretting any notes, the strings do not make a chord… its a dissonant mess. by retuning the strings to make an ‘open’ chord you have ‘open tunings’. here is a link with some specifics: http://guitar.about.com/cs/alternatetunings/ slide guitar would probably be the way to go. with or without the altered tunings. as for other role models… django reinhardt was one of the most brilliant players to ever breath and he lost the use of two left hand fingers in a fire. i think tony iommi of black sabbath also lost a couple digits… but three… geez… thats hard. maybe switching to lefty would be the best way to go…

I have been playing music for 6 years, but the electric guitar for only 2. My current guitar is a Strat copy, a Galveston. I am looking for a guitar that is a little better. I now have narrowed it down to 2: A blue Fender Squire, And a green Mexican made Fender Strat with a humbucker pickup. Can anyone help me in my decision? The Squire in $150 and the Strat in $399, or $349 without the humbucker.

does anyone know the guitar model that Josh Hommes of queens of the stone age uses? preferably all, of them but if you know please post a reesponse. Cheers

March 1, 2004 at 7:19 pm #90765AnonymousGuest
Right lets put you all straight… Josh plays an Ovation Ultra GP, made in 1984, there are only about 200-250 in existence, and I am the prowd owner of one of them! Anyway, he has about 5, including a very beat up black one with a badass tune-o-matic bridge, this is one of the poorer versions however with cheaper hard ware. He has two others that I have seen him use, both modded to be string through, a Wine Red one and a Sunburst model. He also plays as mentioned, a Maton MS500 and similar models, he has many of these, I have seen at least 4 different ones. Other guitars he uses live are a Black Epiphone Dot and green Burns Double Six. As for amps he uses an Ampeg VT-40 with a V-4 head and 2×12 cab and sometimes some VT-22s. However, as the Ampeg amps are completely clean does anyone know how he gets his overdriven sound? Does he use a power break or preamp? I use a tube works preamp, an Ampeg VT-22 and Ovation GP and achieve a pretty similar sound.

Josh hommes guitar effect is the flanger probably morley. One of Joshs many cabinets(Big ass amps)are from Vox. the head types I don’t know, but they sound like peavey or Marshall. Just type in Josh Hommes guitar amps and effects on a search engine and you’ll probably find a crap load of information.

Is it as versatile as I’ve heard? Are the two channels really good sounding or is there one useless? Thank you for your answer!!! Greetings from Germany, Markus

: Is it true that there were only 15 Fender Katanas made..? No that isn’t true at all. I don’t know the exact number of katana’s that were actually produced. But fender made katana in 1985 and 1986 in same yeurs squier also produced theze guitars. They were buit in guitar as well as a bassguitar version of it. And they have both glued in necks and bolt on neck. It was a indeed non fenderisch guitar it had humbuckers, tremelosystem with fine tuners locking nut and so on. I Hope you know enough now Saffie

Hi! I am interested in purchasing a Jerry G. copy. I have always loved his Tiger Guitar. I know a couple of companies that make them, Resurrection Guitars and Alembic which seem like they do a great job. Unfortunately they are not located in the NY area and I can not demo them. They are also not cheap and have considered selling 2 Gibson Les Paul’s to raise money towards this instrument. I have a 68 and I an 80 Custom Les Paul. I do not play them much these days and I am trying to get an idea what they might go for and if it is worth selling them as I am not a collector but have owned them for over 20 yrs and have sentimental attachment to them. The 68 Les Paul had a cracked neck but has been repaired. The 80 is all original and in very good condition. Any input on the Jerry Guitars and selling of my Gibsons is appreciated. Thanks

SO I am turning to you guys for some help It’s an Aria Pro II RSB series 4 string Bass guitar with dual pick ups …thats all I can figure out by looking at it. It haa couple of very small cosmetic scratches on the white "body plate"(don’t know the real name of this peice). I don’t know the year of this guitar unfortunatly. but it does have a red lined case.

Go to Seymourduncan.com Click on "support" and go to the appropriate wiring diagram. The colors of your wires may differ but it’s easy to figure out. Later

I have a Gibson that was purchased in used 1947. It still has the original case. It has the number stamped inside the sound hole up towards the neck of #298. I have contacted Gibson, but they were unable to pinpoint the date of this instrument. The info they sent me does not match this guitar. Maybe it isn’t an L-O model. Does anyone have any suggestions in acquiring its ID and value? Thank you.
-
August 30, 2003 at 10:00 am #91098AnonymousGuest
my suggestion is to go to gbase.com and search for gibson L-O’s… then look at your guitar and compare. pre-war gibson L’s are selling for 1.5k and up. if this isnt enough for you or if you can’t figure out what the heck it is you can always hire a pro for $25-35… just bust out the digital camera and surf to these urls: http://www.mandoweb.com/ http://www.gruhn.com/ gruhn and mandolin bros have been around for awhile and are widely recognized… if you want to spend the money these are the places to do it.

August 15, 2003 at 9:06 pm #90083AnonymousGuest
I have a Fender and I have had this problem too. It usually happens when you go to a higher gauge. Mine gradually went down but is still not all the way down. On the back of Fenders there are springs that work the tremelo I dont know if PRS have this. You have to take the strings off and adjust the springs. BUt dont take my word for it visit a site on doing this.

well i have found that the digitech rp series guitar modeling pedals work well. You can create your own sound. so if you listen to it while makeing a sound you will probably hit the right sound. I’m not sure they even use pedals it might be in theamps though.

My son would like to buy a "collector’s item" from me. It a Fender American Standard Strat, with certificate that it was of the first 100 guitars manufactured in the "new millennium." It has a transparent blond finish over a solid ash body, chrome hardware, and a Floyd Rose. A friend of mine, professional guitarist in Nashville for many years, said it has the finest action he’s ever seen on an electric guitar. How would my son and I go about determining a fair market value for this? Oh, he’s 32 years old, has lots of money, so I’m not giving it away.

: Hi, : I recently bought an Ovation Celebrity CS257 and would just like to know from the experts out there onto what’s the best set of strings that I can use on it. : Thanks a lot! : /Carlito If you are going to use it for playing live, I used to put light gauge ELECTRIC strings on. Maybe Dean Markleys or the like. It makes it extreamly to play for a long time and you can make up for lost tone through EQing. If you are just going to use it for around the house, I suggest CF Martin Sulpher Bronze lights. Hope that helps. Thunderstick

Hi, I am Emily and I am 13. I dont know what kind of guitar I should buy. I love to play volleyball, and basketball, and track. Lately, I’ve been really intersested in rock music and alot of other fast music. I want a guitar that would be easy to learn to play w/out lessons, just on my own. Also, I need a guitar to play in my free time thats easy because I still want to play my sports. I was thinking of a electric guitar because they look cool, but I dont know anything about them. What is the best kind of guitar for me? I dont want one that look to countryish, I would like one that looks like one that someone in a teen rock band would play because me and my best friend want to start a band. She already has a guitar but I dont. So all comments would help so please do what you can to help me out. Thanks, Emily

I think the Yamaha Pacifica is a very versatile and easy to play guitar. It sounds like rock, and I’ve never felt a more comfortable guitar under 1000 euro’s. And the pacifica costs only 200. I got one myself and I use it for all styles, from funk to bluegrass via death metal.

I would recomend a Fender Squire. They are a great guitar for a beginner, and are only around $150. You can get a pack with and amp, chord, bag, tuner, book, and strings in addition to the guitar. It is only around $279. After you get good enough, you could consider a Mexican made Fender Strat. Both guitars look awsome and play great in any band. Brady

I’ve just bought an early 70s Morris ES-175 (Gibson) copy. I need information about this guitar, and would appreciate any help. It is a great guitar, built in Japan. It reads Morris Gakki Co on the headstock.

Hey all! I just decided to take up a new hobby – electric guitar! I headed off to the local music store and bought myself an amp and a Cort. The guy cut me a fairly good deal (I think) and I can’t wait to get started. Just had to post to someone who would understand. Thanks!

I have a Washburn D10S acoustic guitar and recently bought a guitar strap for it. One end obviously fits on the pin at the bottom, but the other end has a hole with a leather string. What does this attach to? There isn’t a pin anywhere else on the guitar that I can find. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I’ve looked everywhere for instructions.

You need to get an acoustic guitar strap adapter which lets you attach the strap to the headstock.

THe sovtek mig 50 is better than 90% of all tube amps tthat are out ther now. We dont make them anyore but if you can get one theyre a going to be a vintage collectible very soon. If you want more of a Bluesy tone put a 12aY7 EH in the first stage 2 12ax7 EH in the second and third stage and a pair of 6L6EH in there. Awesome amp with a 4 x10 EH Pine cabinet.

Search the web for used ones. It’s about your only option. Like that other bloke said, they are out of production now. Find the one Mig-50 head without the master volume. (59′ Fender Bassman clone circuit) That $200 amp sounds better than some boutique type amps I’ve heard!

Hi. I have a Taylor Big Baby which has a great acoustic sound. But I also want to be able to use it for performances and I’m wondering what kind of pick-up system anyone could recommend that would best capture the rich tone of the Big Baby and be flexible in a live setting without ruining it’s natural acoustics!

-
August 11, 2003 at 2:35 pm #89801AnonymousGuest
Some say that american fenders are made with hiest-qualify wood and electronic hardware and those japan axes are made 1000000/per one day and they just sucks… no comparison to american models

I moved to Japan a few months ago and asked around the guitar shops in my area before I left. I was told not to bother with an American-made Fender, as the Japanese ones were just as good. I eventually bought a Taiwanese Pacifica for the same money as a standard strat (\38,000 in Japan) because it was better, with a nicer neck, meatier tone and better finish. I later found out that Fender charge almost twice the amount for a Jap strat in Britain than Yamaha do for the Pacifica I bought, when the Yam is a better guitar and the same price in Japan. I now plan to never buy a Fender quitar again. The Pacifica range goes all the way to Custom shop made from anything you can think of (only available in Japan) and Yamaha tell me they do a lot of thru-necks and multiple layer bodies for their customers. No contest really. Steve,

What guitar did the lead guitarist of the red hot chili pepers use in the album Blood Sugar Sex Magic?
-
August 30, 2003 at 9:14 am #91097AnonymousGuest
im sure he used a bunch… but mostly old stratocasters… maple boards from the 1950s. he had one that had been defretted… i dont recall which song but its a pretty distictive sound… that was a maple neck 50s strat. in an interview he said that he had written alot of the material on that blue jaguar that he is pictured playing at the start of the ‘under the bridge’ video… but i dont think he used it on the final recordings… but i could be wrong… there was a video out on VHS in the early 90s called ‘funky monks’ or something like that… it was all footage shot while they where making that album. its probably out of print but you might be able to find a copy on ebay. im sure there are plenty of shots of the recording/rehersals. he also had a black les paul that he used on stage for a few songs on the tour after mothers milk… i dont know if that one turned up on the following record.

: i really wanna learn electric guitar but i don’t know what brands are good and where to start what do u recomend? I highly suggest you get a Fender "Strat-Pack". For $250 you get a nice quitar, amp, tuner, strap, and video. Play this guitar for a year and then move up to better equipment. One suggestion, spend the money to buy a tube amp, they sound great even with cheap guitars.

Hey! I saw on your website that you wanted a Marshall JCM800 2205. I’m not quite sure yet that I want to sell it, but I’m about 80% sure I will. I love this amp to death cuz of that thick high gain distortion. I’ve been using it for about a year with my band now, but I’ve never gigged with it, so it has just sat in my living room and I only used it when we practiced. I just retubed it with all JJ-tesla tubes. Mine is the year that they made the really good ones because there’s like 3 years they made this model in the late 80’s and some of them don’t sound as good as this one by any means. I recently went and played one at Guitar Center and it had like no bass to it which really surprised me cuz mine is packed with bass. I love the amp, but I’ve also been wanting to try a Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier, the old 2 channel version. My Marshall sounds just like Tom Morello’s from Rage Against the Machine and now Audioslave. I’m pretty sure ours were made the same year. I bought it last year for $675 from a guy, but I’m willing to come down a little bit if you want to make me an offer. I haven’t listed it anywhere on the internet yet cuz im kinda lazy when it comes to fillin out alklk that paperwork on websites and I’d rather just deal directly with the person anyway. I’d either except cash for the amp, or like a trade of like my amp and around $300 if you could find an old Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier 2 channel amp to trade. Either way is fine with me. If you’ve already got this amp, maybe you know of a freind that wants one? Either way, make me a deal or email me back and tell me what you think. I hope to hear from you really soon. Email me at [email protected]. Thanks a lot!!!

: I have an Alvarez Model 5011 that is 23 years old in mint condition. Any idea of it’s worth? ———————- Did your 5011 come with nylon or steel strings? The one that I purchased in 1980 came with steel strings from the music store, plus the one I keep seeing on E-bay seems to have steel strings. Being a classical guitar, my question is, did the music store set this up wrong, or is this classical guitar made to be able to handle steel strings? As for worth, I believe they should be worth about what was paid for them, or around $150 – $200 in good condition. If anyone has any idea about the proper set-up for this guitar, I would appreciate hearing about it. I’m assuming that it should have nylon strins on it, even though the music store set it up with steel strings… and the one I’ve seen on e-bay seems to have steel strings.

Defintely find out somehow what he wants first (ask friends, pay attention while he bores you with guitar talk, etc), while for $400 you can get a decent guitar since he has been playing for so long he will have his preferences and if it’s not his ‘style’ he will probally keep it cuz you gave it to him but not play it much, nothing worse than getting a guitar you don’t like as a present… been there :). : For my two year anniversary I want to buy my boyfriend a new guitar. I would figure out a way to get him in to a guitar store. Watch what he picks up and plays with. Make a mental note of the model number. If it’s something too expensive I’m sure he won’t mind if you get one that’s a step down. Check on musiciansfriend.com, they have some pretty good prices and Guitar Center will match them. Hope this helps.

That sounds exactly like what happened to me the first time i broke string. You could either take it to where you bought it from and have them do it for you. (Usually for free or very cheap, like, 5$) Or you can do it yourself. On the back of the guitar, there should be a (probably white)panel with six holes in the bottom. This is where you slide the strings in and out of the guitar. To get the string off, you have to wind it all the way off (tune down till it comes loose) then untwist it, or cut it off with wire cutters, then untangle the twisted part on the headstock and push and pull it out the back of the guitar. To put a new string in, you can either unscrew the "panel" on the back to see what your doing, or just leave it on. Slide the strings in (with the little ball/bullet tip at the end) then tie the end into a little knot around the "string holes" on the headstock. Then just keep winding it up until it’s in tune. I would reccommend buying a crank. They save alot of time and effort and only cost about 3$

Fender Katana were made for one year, at the moment they are very collectible, remeber the prices of Teles, Jags, Stangs, musicmasters, and Jazzs from the 60’s and 70’s all going up in price in the 80’s and 90’s. Well at the moment this seems to be happening to some of the rarer guitars from the 80’s that typify the era, one of those is the KATANA made between 85-86, so limited production run, the rarest is metallic black rumoured to be fetching upto £1500 in London UK, but you can get a Squire version also made in Jap for between £350 – £500, I saw one sell on Ebay uk last month. The fender ones had a glued in neck (no bolts here) triangular inlays on the fretboard (bound) 2 humbuckers and a horn that is probrably battered to death… The trem is a system 1 like floyd rose locking nut etc. You’ll prob never get a case in a million years… Remember the prices in the UK are higher than USA for this guitar, but if you see another one on ebay UK snap it up they are sure to go up and up in price, they are also decent to play. My friend claims theres one on there now if your interested, but I havent looked for a while

What do you do when you’re told to back off doing something you love? In my case it’s a case of carpal tunnel syndrome… I’ve played Rhythm guitar with a 12 string for over 20 years, and add computer typing to that and I developed a ( thankfully!) slight case. After a month’s worth of pain killers, and a couple of months of anti-inflamatories; plus wearing braces on my wrists at night; and playing guitar only once or twice a month(argh! absolutely impossible to keep calluses) I’m doing better, and am playing more times but for shorter durations. You just can’t make fast chord changes with the brace on… although it has forced me to examine my playing posture. Any body else have comments? or sucess stories? suggestions? Thanks

I have it too but never took drugs (other than asprin/aleve), I just wear the brace at night when it gets bad, and as I type alot (the primary cause of mine) I try to wear the brace while typing or at least pay attention to my hand ‘posture’ while typing… that has helped the most for me. As to playing I got some leather wristbands (and paid more attention to my fret hand ‘posture’… not much you can do about your strumming/picking hand, for me at least) and they have helped and aren’t restrictive… still it’s something that will never go away… only get worse if you don’t pay attention to it. I now have to warm up longer to get to speed (than before, something I rarely did) and know that after a long session or night my hands are going to be hurting !!! : What do you do when you’re told to back off doing something you love? What is your opinion of using guitar tuners. I know it’s best to know how to tune your guitar by ear but what about when playing with a group of musicians and all need to be in tune? Do many pro’s use tuners? I see the ad’s of tuners with major musicians endoresments. World, what are your opinions?
-
August 5, 2003 at 7:04 pm #89497AnonymousGuest
I think just about all pros use tuners. I use a BOSS TU Pedal. Its in my pedal board. When I click on it the signal gets bypassed, so its easy to tune live without making noise. http://www.joybasu.com

August 5, 2003 at 5:47 pm #89463AnonymousGuest
While you should defintely know how to tune/intonate your guitar, electronic tuners are fine and even alot of the cheaper ones are accurate, handy too if you use alot of alternates. Generally when you play in a group you tune off the paino/keyboard (cuz you usually can’t change the paino tuning easily, and you would be suprised how many ‘electronic’ keyboards aren’t in ‘perfect’ tune), or if no keys you tune up using your ear or tuner and then all ‘fine’ tune to a ‘reference’ (ie one person in the group), I like to tune off the bass, but just my preference. The important thing is that the whole group be in tune with each other, even if technically the tuning is a little off… same with a guitar, as long as it is in tune with it’s self it generally sounds good by itself. : What is your opinion of using guitar tuners. When i play a gig i tune by ear but that fits he type of music that i play(blues) if you arep layin somethin that only sounds right in tune then you might want to get a tuner. I have a tuner and its a seiko i dont use it very much but i know a lot of people who have them they are cheap and accurate.

Who makes the best sounding electric guitar strings?
-
August 31, 2003 at 11:43 pm #91210AnonymousGuest
The best sound I think comes from Ernieball. But they don’t last for to long. You need tou replace them very quickly. I use Gibson-strings right now. They sound fine and I don’t need to replace them to often. But you should find out for yourself which strings you like the most. "Sounding well" is a very subjective term. The only way to find out which strings are the best for you is to try as much different al you can find.

: Who makes the best sounding electric guitar strings? i would recommend Ernie Ball Super Slinkys 009’s and a bit more expensive (but worth it) are the Ernie Ball Pure Nickels
-
August 5, 2003 at 5:24 pm #89492AnonymousGuest
Depends on the sound/style/guitar, seems like there are 2 types of players, those that really care about strings and those that don’t and just get what ever is cheapest, great players in both camps so it’s kinda a rhetorical question… I’am kinda in the latter cuz I play alot of differnt styles so have to change em around alot and mix-n-match for my preferences. Lately for electrics I been mainly using GHS boomers (11-52) and Dean Markly blue steele (12-55), both are fine to me and cheap to boot (I bought bulk of both). If you soak your strings overnight in naptha (lighter fluid) before installing it seems to extend ‘string life’. : Who makes the best sounding electric guitar strings?

August 8, 2003 at 5:18 am #89618AnonymousGuest
: I was just wondering what notes are in the chord of E flat dominant seven. To find the notes of a dominant 7, write out the scale of the root. For Eb, that’s: Eb-F-G-Ab-Bb-C-D-Eb Then take the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and b7th of the scale. You get: Eb-G-Bb-Db This works for every key. You can learn more about chord structures from lots of books… I recommend "Music Theory for Guitarists" (available from Amazon and other sites) but then, I wrote it 🙂 Tom

is the distorted sound of a guitar mostly a matter of humbuckers and effects used or does the whole construction(eg.materials)affect it as well?
-
August 6, 2003 at 7:24 am #89473AnonymousGuest
It’s the whole enchilada. Materials in various combinations will give you anything from the warm-n-fuzzy sound to chunky ballsy. A bright powerful humbucker will sound mellow and warm if you combine it with certain woods, while a warm humbucker can sound high and twangy if you combine other materials. As far as effects, good effects work with the guitar and sound good. Crappy effects don’t really care about the signal, harmonics, or tone and make nearly every guitar sound the same…and crappy. Hope this helps a little.

the easiest way is to buy a Fishman Neo pickup… put it in the sound hole, tighten (no too much) two little screws, plug it into an amp or PA, and start playing. You don’t even have to remove the strings. the BEST way is to have a Martin Thinline under the saddle pickup installed. it’s best if a qualified shop does the work as it requires drilling a couple of holes and changing the strings. the martin comes with a pre-amp, and is more costly. i have one of each, and like them both very much. the advantages of the soundhole pickup is #1 cost, and #2 it’s portable from guitar to guitar. i only put it in when i’m gigging, the rest of the time, it’s in the tube that i got it in. alos, i use it on any of my three guitars that haven’t the martin installed (yet)!!

You just need an (acoustic) pickup and preamp, there are so many out there, L R Baggs and Fishman are 2 good vendors, but alot depends on the guitar, tone, and price range you are looking for. Just go to any major online music site, or harmonycentral (for reviews) to browse around and get an idea of whats out there… then go to a music store w/your guitar and try some out. : I’m looking for some information on converting an acoustic guitar in to an acoustic electric. I need some assistance identifying what my Charvel guitar is, please… it’s maybe a silly question, but I’m looking to sell it so really need to know what it is. It’s a Charvel, as mentioned, bolt-on neck with a six-digit serial no. – or at least I think it’s six, as there’s a small "dot" after the first two digits. Head is "triangular" and downward pointing. All hardware is black. No shark fins on the fretboard. One double and two single pick-ups, five position selector. Licensed from Floyd Rose bridge and tremelo arm. In red finish, and a rosewood fretboard (I think)… does anyone have similar or an idea what model/year it is? I’m presuming it’s Japanese origin/era. Thanks in advance!

August 9, 2003 at 12:54 am #89619AnonymousGuest
Sounds like either a Charvel Model A, or Traditional to me. Except for the triangular head thing…does it look sort of like a Stratocaster head? With a curve on the downward part? Cause that does look kind of triangular.

It’s late here, I’m pissed, sleepy and confused. I tried figuring out for the past few hours why my amp and guitar buzz. First, my guitar is a Barracuda (cheap guitar) and my amp is a Fender, kinda cheap too. When I turned on my amp alone without my guitar there was a very little buzz. When I put the distortion on the buzz was even bigger. I asked a friend I know who’s kinda good at guitar. He said to ground my amp (new to me). So I grounded my amp and now the buzz WITHOUT my guitar plugged gone. Then I plug my guitar, put distortion and I hear an annoying buzz, coming from my guitar I guess. At this point I don’t know what to do. If someone could help I would be grateful.
-
August 9, 2003 at 1:02 am #89623AnonymousGuest
There’s alot of reasons it would buzz when the guitar is plugged in. I had that same problem with my first Fender Champ15. 1. You could be to close to the amp. Those small amps usually don’t have good noise reduction or anything. 2. You could be near a t.v., computer or some other kind of electronic something or another. The magnetic fields that come off from these sort of things interfere with the guitar, but not usually the amp. 3. You’re guitar volume could be on 10 which usually picks up almost everything on, in and around the guitar (mine does anyways) or the gain might be too high. When i had that amp, i kept the gain around 5 or 6, and kept the mid’s down to about 5. Cutting down the mid’s makes your guitar sound less "pushed out" and it kinda covers up the buzzing a bit. And I would keep the volume knob on the guitar to about 7 or 8, max.

i got an epiphone les paul with a crack in the neck about half way up is there any way of repairing this – it looks like the nech and body are one piece but surely this cant be? any advice would be gratefull received
-
August 5, 2003 at 3:00 pm #89480AnonymousGuest
last statement first: the Les Paul has a "set" neck… it goes clear through the body, so yes, it IS possible. Firsts question: most depends on how bad the break is, and where it’s broken. if it’s a clean crack, well believe it or not, glue is stronger than wood. it could be mortised with dowells, (oak prefferably) and glued with clamps and it ‘could’ be stronger than before. the real problem is that there is a truss rod going the length of the neck which puts additional tension to keep it straight. it takes up a lot of room within the neck, limiting the areas where the dowells can fit. it requires removing the fretboard, the truss rod and finding someone with the nads to do it properly. then it could also reqire a refinish on the neck. long story short: it can be done, but is it worth it? check with a good luthirer in your area and see.
-
August 3, 2003 at 5:36 pm #89340AnonymousGuest
The neck is set into the body, why it appears to be one piece. Any decent shop should be able to fix it as LP cracked necks/heads are a common repair, if you want to do it yourself (not too hard) just do a search as there are lot’s of websites with step by step repair instruction. : i got an epiphone les paul with a crack in the neck about half way up is there any way of repairing this – it looks like the nech and body are one piece but surely this cant be? any advice would be gratefull received

if it’s in good shape, it may be worth 100-200 TIMES what he paid for it. call your local Gibson dealer and ask them. other than selling guitars, it seems that’s all they’re good for. next, call your insurance company and get an addendum put on your home-owners’… seal it, pack it and store it for as long as you can!!! what a GEM!!!!!!!!

I would go with a Squier Fender Strat for electric or like a montana acoustic
-
August 2, 2003 at 4:55 am #89345AnonymousGuest
It all depends on what you want to play. Classical, acoustic, electric…? Then it depends on what type of music you want to play on that instrument.
-
August 5, 2003 at 3:28 pm #89488AnonymousGuest
pls define "good". in acoustics, it could be the latest Epiphone AJ1 dreadnaught for $99, that’s a good price for a decent guitar. then maybe you’d consider a $15,000 Larivee a good guitar (I would!) I guess the real question is how rich is daddy?
-
August 6, 2003 at 7:32 am #112096AnonymousGuest
You’re right, if daddy can afford it a good guitar can be much higher end. Good would obviously be a matter of taste and the depth of your wallet. I’ve found the best affordable tone to come in the new retail range around $400 to $600 retail. You get out of it what you put in to it. Which includes which cuts of wood are used in the construction, how they’re handled, glues, etc. The Koreans just aren’t going to use top quality materials and you get what you pay for.

Ok i want to play an acoustic guitar. And play rock or punk and eventauly play electric. Play music like dasboard confessional or stuff like that…
-
August 2, 2003 at 9:57 pm #118041AnonymousGuest
At your level you should go to your local music store and just buy a cheep acoustic. Until you develop a sense of tone and get experienced you won’t know the difference anyway. Make sure it feels comfortable. It you start some bad habits now they will be very hard to correct later. If you need to you should probably pick up a good guitar book (even if you just browse one for free in the book store) and try to at least learn what to look for. You want an adequately straight neck with minimal fret buzzing. I can’t really think of much else that could help you in writing. Good luck.
-
August 4, 2003 at 5:27 am #120340AnonymousGuest
I’ve been playing for 20 years and started with a Yamaha acoustic. They make fairly good quality instruments at a reasonably low price. Have someone knowledgable sit down with you and go over basics such as restringing, setup and maintenence and you’ll have years of service out of the instrument.

I don’t understand it. In a day and age when I can get a bad-ass cab for around $250, I have to go out and spend $400 for a decent tube head. I want 100w – 130w that’s reliable and LOUD! But I want it for around $250. Gimme help.
-
August 2, 2003 at 4:57 am #89338AnonymousGuest
I’d be wary about a tube head for only $250. It’s either a cheep one or the tubes are on their way out. If you do find one make sure you check out the tubes before you buy it.

The EMG actives don’t sound as good as people let on. The best thing you can do is get a Dimarzio X2N. It puts out 510 mV and is the hottest passive pickup on the market. The next best choice would be a Duncan Invader. I’m also pleasently pleased with Carvin’s high output pickups. Check out the websites for each of these companies…www.seymourduncan.com…www.dimarzio.com…www.carvin.com. Compare the tone charts as well as output. Dimarzio also has a new one out, the Subsonic, that’s supposed to be pretty good if you down tune, check it out on their website as well. Then go to Ebay, a good used pickup can save you some $$$

You have to go EMG active if you want to play the gain game. I have an 81 at the neck and an 85 at the bridge. Hammett and Wylde use ’em because they rock. Fair warning: they’re a pain to install, but worth the effort. : : Hi, i currently have a starfield electic guitar h/s/s, and at the moment have a seymour duncan "holdsworth" humbucker in it at the bridge.
