i had nightmares keeping my guitar in tune for ages and eventually sold the guitar and got a new one with a Floyd Rose.. it keeps me in tune like a dream! best answer i found for tuning problems!

The two main types are 'single coil' pickups (they are a single row pickup and 'humbuckers' (they are a double row pickup). Single row pickups are on Strats and give a bright treble tone while Humbuckers are found on Gibsons and most modern rock guitars, they give a fuller warmer sound.. its down to personal preference which you prefer but I think humbuckers give the best tone especially for metal.. but then again Ritchie Blackmore always used single coils and he got great tone!

It's a place for your Whammy (wammy) bar. Go into any music store and ask for one of these. Then when playing, push it toward the strings slightly and see what happens.

that stick is called a whammy or vibrato bar.. you just insert it into that hole and then wind it round clockwise to secure it.. when you depress it it lowers the pitch of notes and chords.. very good effect for rock music though the downside is your guitar will go out of tune a bit if you use it too much..

After about 20 years with my Hohner ST Savage (twin humbuckers, floyd rose tremolo and jackson headstock) and about 15 years of putting up with a volume control that hardly worked, I decided last weekend to take it apart completely. You're probably not impressed that I went to the trouble of carefully separating the volume and tone variable resistors and cleaning the resistance track and internal contacts with white spirit without having to disconnect any of the wiring. Nor that they actually worked perfectly again when put back together - no dead spots. But with the strings back on and tuned in with adjustments to the springs on the back of the tremolo, I found I had the opposite problem to you - the action was too low and the strings vibrating against the next fret when played. It won't make you feel any better that I found my truss rod to have an allen key head which I could get to with the allen key provided when I bought the guitar, despite the tight angle. But one of your questions was about the direction to turn it. I found that turning it clockwise lowered the action even further (I had guessed wrong!). A net anticlockwise turn of approx 180 degrees was enough to raise the strings sufficiently to fix my problem. I wouldn't have dared touch the truss rod before for fear of doing damage, but can confirm that DIY is possible - at least for an amateur like me who won't be playing to audiences larger than five! The rod had seized up though and I found I needed water pump pliers on the end of the allen key to get it to shift at first.

Fender makes a pretty good acoustic for a beginner. I actually like the Rogue acoustic too. It's about 100 bucks, and I bought it to bring to college with me. It stays in tune pretty well and sounds ok. I think that's about all you'll get for 150.

I have a bass cube available 60 watts, cream coloured vinyl. A few bumps and snags in the speaker cloth, but it works well. I'm looking for 60 pounds, plus shipping.

I think solos died out because they were associated a lot with 80's rock and metal. Though if you want to hear some nice modern rock solos, listen to Weezer's album "Maladroit"
