I have seen a lot of posts on here for people having trouble with tuning their guitar, or keeping it in tune because of their tremolo system. I have been playing for 22 years, and setting up guitars for 15, so feel free to email me to answer any questions

cheers !

Pick-ups and Humbuckers

I am new to guitaring and havn't been playing that long. I do not have a guitar teacher and i self teach myself. I do not know anything about pick-ups. What do they actually do and whats the difference between really cheap and really pricey ones?

Re: Pick-ups and Humbuckers

Essentially pickups work on electro magnetic principles. The iron in the strings cause a current to be produced in the coil of the pickup. There is copper wire wrapped many times inside of the pickup around pole pieces. Magnets induce a magnetic field and as the strings vibrate in this field they cause an electric current to be generated. Cheep ones skimp on the quality and quantity of materials. A cheep pickup will use inferior wire and less coiling, and consequently you get a cheeper sound. The more wrapping you have the more the highs are reduced and bass excentuated as well...but this also depends on the thickness of the wire. Cheep pickups generally aren't shielded as well and you get more microphonic noise. Hope this helps.

The two main types are 'single coil' pickups (they are a single row pickup and 'humbuckers' (they are a double row pickup). Single row pickups are on Strats and give a bright treble tone while Humbuckers are found on Gibsons and most modern rock guitars, they give a fuller warmer sound.. its down to personal preference which you prefer but I think humbuckers give the best tone especially for metal.. but then again Ritchie Blackmore always used single coils and he got great tone!

How much are you asking? Is the action good( easy to press down on stings )?

New at guitars. Have a question

what is the little hole next to where you put the strings for i have a little metal stick kinda thing whats it for (electric guitar)

Re: New at guitars. Have a question

It's a place for your Whammy (wammy) bar. Go into any music store and ask for one of these. Then when playing, push it toward the strings slightly and see what happens.

Re: New at guitars. Have a question

Sorry...I misread your question. I see you already have a wammy bar. So just play a chord, then gently push the bar toward the strings and see what happens

Re: New at guitars. Have a question

: what is the little hole next to where you put the strings for i have a little metal stick kinda thing whats it for (electric guitar)

that stick is called a whammy or vibrato bar.. you just insert it into that hole and then wind it round clockwise to secure it.. when you depress it it lowers the pitch of notes and chords.. very good effect for rock music though the downside is your guitar will go out of tune a bit if you use it too much..

Seymour Duncan SSL-3

I recently bought a single coil hight output pickup from seymour. The pickup sound kinda mudyy to me. When I called thewm the tech said I might want to change the 250k pot for a 500k pot and that should give me a nice crisp sound loud sound. Can some verify if that would work and why. Thank you

!!Jackson DK2, action too high help!!!

Hey, over the summer I got my jackson resetup for .10s on the top three strings and .11's on the bottom three, for the whole summer it played great, now it just turned to autumn (Northeast) and the action became unplayably high, i opened up the truss rod cover but it seems to have a wierd type of nut- a hexagon thing unless im missing something? was expecting it to be a allen wrench socket, also because of the headstock and the rods's positioning its at an incredibly steep angle and really hard to access, and tips on how to turn the truss rod (which way, what tools) or how to lower the aciton in general. thanks

Re: !!Jackson DK2, action too high help!!!

I'd start by lowering the saddles. But then you'll have to reset the intonation. If you don't know how to do it, take it to a shop and they'll do it for you.

Re: !!Jackson DK2, action too high help!!!

After about 20 years with my Hohner ST Savage (twin humbuckers, floyd rose tremolo and jackson headstock) and about 15 years of putting up with a volume control that hardly worked, I decided last weekend to take it apart completely. You're probably not impressed that I went to the trouble of carefully separating the volume and tone variable resistors and cleaning the resistance track and internal contacts with white spirit without having to disconnect any of the wiring. Nor that they actually worked perfectly again when put back together - no dead spots. But with the strings back on and tuned in with adjustments to the springs on the back of the tremolo, I found I had the opposite problem to you - the action was too low and the strings vibrating against the next fret when played. It won't make you feel any better that I found my truss rod to have an allen key head which I could get to with the allen key provided when I bought the guitar, despite the tight angle. But one of your questions was about the direction to turn it. I found that turning it clockwise lowered the action even further (I had guessed wrong!). A net anticlockwise turn of approx 180 degrees was enough to raise the strings sufficiently to fix my problem. I wouldn't have dared touch the truss rod before for fear of doing damage, but can confirm that DIY is possible - at least for an amateur like me who won't be playing to audiences larger than five! The rod had seized up though and I found I needed water pump pliers on the end of the allen key to get it to shift at first.
Good luck finding the right tool...

Acoustic Guitar Purchase

Hey. I'm looking into buying an acoustic guitar soon. I've never played before. I'm really just looking for something to start out with that sounds somewhat decent. My price range is very low. I'm look for something 150 or less. I just can't justify spending a lot of money on a guitar since I've never played before, but I don't want a piece of junk either. I just want your typical, 6 steel string acoustic. I'm not really sure what I need. Any suggestions as to guitars that I should look into?

Re: Acoustic Guitar Purchase

Fender makes a pretty good acoustic for a beginner. I actually like the Rogue acoustic too. It's about 100 bucks, and I bought it to bring to college with me. It stays in tune pretty well and sounds ok. I think that's about all you'll get for 150.

Re: Acoustic Guitar Purchase

The best idea I've come across is to go to a *good* guitar shop and feel the action of several really fine guitars........F chords are hard to do on anything but an instrument that's easy to play.....then look for a cheap guitar that closely matches that feel.

I totally wasted three years with a guitar that was unplayable, but once I felt a *good* one I then found an Alverez that was just as easy to play in a hock shop for $60.

Idea #2--
Find a salesman that is more interested in YOU than a commision and have him help you. Many times guitar shop instructors will take an interest and steer you in the right direction, too.

Re: Acoustic Guitar Purchase

If all you can afford is 150.00 check out your local costco wholesale and get a yamaha. probably work for you. however- nothing discourages new players more than a cheap guitar tearing your fingers apart. nothing give car-pol-tunnel more than a cheap instrument, especially a guitar which flesh meets steel

Re: Acoustic Guitar Purchase

save some more money and get a Martin D-15 - you'll be glad you did and you can always sell it later and get most of your money back if not all of it. cheap guitars
sound cheap.

Crate GX1200H problem

My fellow bandmate has a GX1200H that shorts out all the time. All he has to do it give it a good smack and it works out fine for a little bit, then cuts in and out again. He refuses to take it to someone because he doesn't have any money. I think I could fix it myself, but I'd need to know where to look. Any ideas? Thanks.

Re: Crate GX1200H problem

I wouldn't mess around too much with the electronics, but the problem is probably just a bad connection somewhere, and if so, you might be able to see it if you open her up (look at the input especially)

I'd say check Ebay for a good deal or Musiciansfriend.com, americanmusical.com, etc.

Re: Bass Amp

I have a bass cube available 60 watts, cream coloured vinyl. A few bumps and snags in the speaker cloth, but it works well. I'm looking for 60 pounds, plus shipping.

WHAT HAPPENED 2 SOLOS

IF ALL U TRUE GUITARIST OUT THERE WOULD LIKE 2 SHOW SOME SKILL QUIT BEIING A WUSSS AND PLAY A SOLO

Re: WHAT HAPPENED 2 SOLOS

I think solos died out because they were associated a lot with 80's rock and metal. Though if you want to hear some nice modern rock solos, listen to Weezer's album "Maladroit"

Re: WHAT HAPPENED 2 SOLOS

: IF ALL U TRUE GUITARIST OUT THERE WOULD LIKE 2 SHOW SOME SKILL QUIT BEIING A WUSSS AND PLAY A SOLO

nah none of todays 'nu' metal guitarists play solos anymore.. think they've forgotten how to do em to be honest.. u need to check out some good 80's metal covers bands now for your live solos.. i play in one and you'd be amazed by how many people come up to me and say wow i'd forgotten how good guitar solos sound good live! sad but true.. is it Metallicas now release that doesnt have any solos on it all? dunno what the world is coming to!
