'car' paint is fine but it depends on what you are going for, check out reranch.com thats the site for guitar refinishing

i would second that. read about it before you do something you might not like.
i am sure bicycle paint is fine for eddy van halen, when he didnt care what his guitars looked like, or know any better. but his guitars are made of better paints nowadays.

check out Stewart MacDonald also. (I think it is Stewmac.com or similar) they have guitar builders and luthiers supplies and how-to books and videos etc.

polyrurethane is used by some because its easy to paint on and have it shine and look ok. laquer is harder, easier to do touchups later, little more costly. read Gibson's site also about finishes. theyre one of the few that do guitars in nitrocellulose laquer still. the cheaper guitars usually are acrylic or poly.

Epiphone serial number

I'm looking at a used Epiphone Les Paul, pretty light weight, black including back of neck, trapezoid inlays in fretboard, Gibson plastic cover over neck rod, serial number I00021948 (that's a capital letter I followed by 8 digits). The serial number is a transparent stick on lable on the back of the headstock. Any idea where and/or when this was made or some range of value?

Epiphone Emperor

I recently purchased an epi emperor serial # 1112799. I would like to find out its year of manufacture and place of same. Any other info on it would be welcome. Thanks

guitar tuners and tunning

I just bought a guitar for my kid. I had seen this guitar and learning videos on tv. On the video it says to tighten the strings clockwise, from left to right. But on this guitar the tuners tighten by going counter clockwise, righ to left. Was this guitar put together wrong or strung wrong ?

I think the video is wrong. On every guitar I have seen you tighten the strings by turning the keys counterclockwise which to me feels more intuitive than the other way aroung. But a new set of strings installed the way that feels right to you would soon fix the problem.

The strings have probably been put on the wrong way (I don't think it makes too much difference though). It's not worth changing them around now, but when you get a new set of strings for it, string them the other way then.

How to tune a guitar & HOw to understand tabs

grand prix

i have an old strat-body style guitar that says Grand Prix in fancy letters on the headstock. i know its not fender or anything and i was wondering if anyone knew what it was. Thanks

Re: grand prix

I have one as well. Black and white. I've had it for 13 years and purchased it used in Vermont. I'vebeen looking to find the original manufacturer and came up dry.

It plays great for a clone.

Re: grand prix

I had to buy a new bridge for it, but i was playing it all day today and it's the best strat copy i've ever played. It might even be better than an actual fender.

: : i have an old strat-body style guitar that says Grand Prix in fancy letters on the headstock. I was wondering if it is a vualuble bass. Thanks

Re: grand prix (bass guitar)

I bought a similar bass guitar on ebay for my son for christmas. It is black with a light color wood neck, and Grand Prix written on headstock. On the front of the body is a large black plastic plate with a white lower bottom layer visible from the side of the plate. The plate also encompases a thumb rest, a 2 part split pickup, two knobs, and the plug hole. The strings thread through the body to 4 adjustable Tailstocks. It has black Grover tuners; when I messed with guitars around 1970 Grover tuners were only on the better guitars, like Martin. I searched web as I bid on it but found only new guitars, amps, and car racing stuff. This bass has two small labels, a white one on the back of the neck at the body with a black number 1201737 inside of an outline box. The second label is on the back of the body on the neck adjustment cover, it is gold with black letters, hard to read, but probably H830B/B. My sons friends, true beginners, like the Grand Prix better than their new store bought axes. Anyone know whio made this/these things, and/or what there current value is.

fender mustang bass help...

Can someone tell me the year and country. Here is the serial # 812031... Fender Mustang.. look like a new neck not factory installed.. Becuase thier are gaps between the neck and body...

buying

I was looking into buying my first guitar and i know i want an electric. i was woundering what would be good for a beginner. one of myfriends has a westone and it sounds amazing so if anyone could give some input into my situation i would really apreciate it

Re: buying

Buy anything cheap, most new guitars these days are built to a reasonable standard. One thing I will say though is BUY A TUNER i found tuning the thing the hardest to do in the early days!

The Westone is a good choice. They are great guitars and you won't out grow it if you get a good one. The best place to get one is on Ebay because most people don't know about these fine guitars and they sell for under $200. I just got one for $150 and it has the 2 humbuckers and a single coil setup that has split coils for hunderds of sounds. It can sound like almost any guitar out there and it's good quality.
Good luck........

Wanted electric Harmony guitars or parts

I'm looking for electric Harmony guitars and parts from the 1950's to 1972. If you have any guitars or parts laying around, turn them into cash and help me with my G.A.S.
One part or a 100. Knobs, Bridges and pickups needed.

See my site for my buitars for sale and other parts needed. Also there is some info on how to make your guitar hot with new caps.

Thanks!!!! [email protected]

interesting. i had sold a Silvertone stratotone style guitar for 75 bucks about a year ago. it was like new condition too. shouldnt have ket it go so cheap. dont even know if they knew what it was.
was black with white pickguard, 2 tone, 2 volume. 3 way switch. perfect neck and frets. probably wasnt used much. everything like new. <sigh> oh well.

i have a harmony rocket from 1973, one of their last ones, so it had all the bugs worked out. would like to find a better pickguard for it, since mine has a crack on it. (its the red sunburst with white pickguard and bindings. very nice finish.) double cutaway. 2 pickup. 2 tone, 2 volume.

Hey Dan,
Pickguards are the hardest to find because by the time a 40 year old guitar gets to be a "parts" guitar, the pickguards are usually gone or trash. There is a company down the road from me that will make you one. They do a good job. WD out of Ft. Myers Fl. http://www.wdmusicproducts.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?
Give them a try. Good luck with that Rocket.....

Re: i have an harmony flying v in mint

i have a harmony flying v in mint post if you want to try and purchase

Re: Wanted electric Harmony guitars or parts

umm i have seen pickguards for sale that are just ya know, regular generic plastic pickguards.
mine had the Harmony(TM) logo on it, so I would like it to match that. the letters were slightly engraved, the black writing on the white pickguard.

cant they match mine up exactly? just curious.
thanks!

Changing the pick guard

Does any one know a good web site or book that gives a good explanation on how to change the pick guard to an electric guitar? Thanks

Re: Changing the pick guard

Really no mystery, just take it off, remove any attached pups and do the reverse to install the new one.

Effect pedal order..I need Help!!

i am lost as to what order my effects should be in. i have the following effects: a crybaby wah, DOD juice box (dist.), boss Compressor/ Sustainer, and a boss Blues Driver (dist.). The order i have them in now is from guitar to amp, wah, compressor, juice box, blues driver.
Thank you

Re: Effect pedal order..I need Help!!

What has worked for me has been this: Guitar to CS-3 to Blues Driver to Chorus to volume pedal to digital delay to amp. If the volume pedal has a tuner out, connect that to the tuner.

There are many different ways to hook em up and alot depends on what sound you are going for, but you might try something similar to this first (ie blues driver earlier in the chain and wah further down) and see how it works... and keep tweaking from there

What is this Old Guitar?

I have an old guitar that has some Gypsys doing their dance. The picture is painted on and covers most of the guitars top. Its all done it what used to be white. Its a little yellow due to age. I don't know anything about the guitar. It has no name but at the top of the head stock there are the remains of three letters. Can't tell what they said. Its kind of folk looking.
Any thing will help.

i have a yamaha guitar and a crate amp. and i can play guitar fine, but how can i manipulate ALL the diff. knobs to make different sounds. i get how to make raw nasty messy DIStortion, but i need to refine. please help

: i have a yamaha guitar and a crate amp. and i can play guitar fine, but how can i manipulate ALL the diff. knobs to make different sounds. i get how to make raw nasty messy DIStortion, but i need to refine. please help

to make distortion, you need to mess with the master volume and the regular volume. peavey calls them pre gain and post gain. some amsp call either or both of them gain controls.

basicly you just have to tinker around with the knobs for various sounds.
the bass, mid, and treble adjust the EQ or (the basic tones)
if you have reverbm thats always nice to have. it adds some more depth to your guitar sound.

if you have the master volume almost all the way down, then the regular volume all the way up, you'll get real fuzzy distortion. you can get less distortion by turning the volume control back down some. you adjust the overal loudness with those two controls.
just be careful not to have the master up real high. if you do, then have the other volume far down, at least at first till you get an idea what level the loudness is at.

guess thats as good as i can get here, since i dont know specifics about your amp.
you can also get effect pedals that you would plug in between the guitar and the amp, to give you all sort of sounds, including different types of distortions.

please help in buying acoustic

I need help choosing 1 of the 3 acoustic guitars that I could buy
a Martin DXM Acoustic Guitar
a Ovation CC057 Celebrity Acoustic Electric Guitar
or a Fender DG20CE Dreadnought Acoustic Electric Guitar
I heard that the Martin was not that good because it was constructed of high pressure laminated wood
and I heard that the Fender was not that good because it's action was too high
can anybody please help me ?

Re: please help in buying acoustic

I have a DX1 and it is a great sounding guitar for the money. It has a really nice tone and quality I wouldnt expect from them at this price range and it's built like a tank so if it feels good in your hands I would go for it BUT I would also recommend the Fender DG22CE. Its a single cutaway acoustic-electric, and its absolutely the best fender *acoustic* guitar I've heard. I've played about 4 of these and they all seem to be set up pretty well. The finish is nice and the sound is just great. No string buzz, great intonation on each string, and good volume. Plus with the single cutaway I can play blues licks at the 12th fret and below, and its even cheaper than the DX1. I've seen them go for $400 and less.

As far as Ovation, I just don't care for them so will keep my yap shut there.
