Re: Gibson SG
Hi Tom
Dating Gibson SG's is difficult from just the serial number. Yours was made either in 1965, or 1973, 74, or 75.
You need to look at the individual features of the guitar as well in order to narrow the range down.
If it's a 65, it's worth much more than the 73, 74 or 75. Value depends entirely on condition and the exact model.
Can't be more specific without a pic, sorry!

I just got my first guitar with a floyd rose type trem and I was a little shocked also at how long it took to tune it. The first time I did I must have been really involved in looking at the tuning knobs on the head because after it was tuned I noticed the brigde at a 45 degree angle to the guitar body! Anyway, I tried later to pay attention to what happens when you tune it and have come up with a procedure that now takes about 15 minutes and I hope it helps. The main thing to remember is make 'little' adjustments. Don't try to get it in perfect tune right away. Just try to keep everythin as 'even' as possible. I start by loosening the lock-downs at the nut and back the fine tuners almost all the way out at the bridge. Then I loosen the strings all the way so there is no tension. I have to keep going back over strings I already loosened because they get tight again as you loosen additional strings. Next I'll start to tighten the strings as evenly as possible by the tuning pegs on the head. I'm not really worried about tuning yet as much as trying to get the strings to where they just start to get tight. Just to balance the bridge I'll start with lower E, then high E, then B, then A. Now the tuning begins. I hope you have an electronic tuner because I can't imagine doing this without one. I saw a freeware one on tucows.com from http://www.bincsoft.com/. I don't know how good it is. There are a few others there also.
At this point, in my opinion, there's really no sense in tring to get the strings in perfect tune yet because as soon as you tighten another string the bridge lifts up and the rest of the strings go flat. I just try to get within a fret or two or even more (in the same direction of course, like flat) at the beginning. I think the main goal here is to try to get them 'evenly tense'. I'll go the the next string, get within a few frets or so and go back to the first and retune it because it probably went flat. From this point on I'm going to the next string in no particular order and basically trying to keep them even. You especially want to check all strings 'often' to see if you have one 'way off' especially sharp because if you loosen the sharp one all the rest go in the right direction (sharp) which is really helpful. After I tune a string I go back and retune all the ones I have already done. Once I get them all close it starts to get fun because things actually work. I'LL make A MINOR adjustment in the right direction without trying to get the string in exact tune because that will throw out the rest even more. I just keep doing this over and over and sooner or later it's in tune! Oh yeah, when you're tuning look at the bridge every so often to make sure it's not getting way out of level with the guitar body. From what I've read as long as your guitar is set up correctly and you haven't changed string guage or anything major like that since it worked before, you should come out with a level bridge.

OVATION CRACKED! My husband and I are just sick..!! msg
For many many years my husband's dream was to own an Ovation Legend 12 string acoustic electric. I was able to buy him a new one about five years ago. (I paid about $1200.00) We have five children and our life has been pretty busy so there was always the excuse with regard to time and lessons when it came to him playing it. I have recently decided to take violin lessons and it has made him want to take lessons on his Ovation...HOWEVER...when he went to take it out of the case,,,,he realized it was cracked. The crack runs along a very straight line from the end of the guitar to the beginning of the bridge and then no further.
He was so very sick about this that he did not tell me for a week! When he did..I wished he hadn't ..it just broke my heart and I could see from the look on his face that he is just sick about it. He has been babying it with a guitar humidifier and it has caused it to close some and we are also running a humidifier in our loft, which is where the guitar was stored. He owns 3 other guitars, 2 of which are lower end Ovations that have no cracking and ironically were the only ones that were NOT in the case.
Could someone here be so VERY kind as to give us some instruction as to getting it repaired? We want to be sure and send it to someone who knows what they are doing.
I have finally gotten him to realize that if you wait until everything in your life is just a certain way in order to play...then you never will. Now he is ready and I would just love to surprise him by having it fixed.
Thanks so much for your help!

I have had the same problem.Description of crack is exactly the same on my Martin D1. I own a Gibson Hummingbird (1970) and a less expensive Alvarez classical model 4103. Live in west Texas (dry climate). Never used a humidifier. Neither cracked.
The Martin has cracked. I called martin customer service. Guitar has lifetime warranty. Wasn't sure what Martin would do. Long story short. Guitar is now in Nazareth, Pa.. The company has looked at crack and has agreed to repair at no charge to me. I only pay shipping. Hope this information helps. Contact Ovation or Kaman Customer service. Should have phone no. or email address with your paperwork you got when purchased. Plead your case and send it back. Hope they are as ageeable as Martin has been. GOOD LUCK
David! Thanks so much for this info. Per your advice...msg
I have emailed Kaman (Ovation) and hope to hear from them soon. If they give me any static...I'll just tell em next time I'll talk my hubby into a Martin! LOL
Incidentally my husband's name is David...great name!
We are in Oklahoma....western...so I bet our climate is about the same!
Thanks again SO MUCH! I also got your email and will let you know as well as anyone here what comes out of this. Hopefully we will be as fortunate as it appears you have been!

Dear Deb
My 1975 Ovation Custom Balladeer has the same problem. I glued some splints in and the crack has gotten no worse. Any decent Luthier can do this for you and it will be fine. A couple years ago the bridge pulled off my Applause mandolin which i had purchased used from ebay. I contacted Kaman industry ( who makes both applause and Ovation) and they had me return it through a dealer ( Axe Haven music ) Long story short they sent me a brand new Mandolin. Moral of the story, try Kaman first. I paid a total of $5 to ship the mandolin through Axe Haven.
Peace
Jim

I just tested the water on e-bay on a 74 strat. It went to 2600 in 3 days. I think it might have gone over 4k if I had left it on.

If that is the case, then it is from early 1965. See the following link:
