not really any solution to this, turn the amp away from you? stand/sit behind the amp? potted pickups help, are you using a semi accoustic? they feedback like someone pulling on squeely the squeeling pig from squeekersville. heres the best solution, get your amp and hang it outside your window, crank the mama up to the brink of destruction, but get this, heres the smart part, if you want more volume just open the window a little, the simple solutions are sometimes the best.

Hmm.It sounds like a couple of things.
1)The ground wire isn't soldered to a peice of metal.
2)You have a bad capacitor on the pick-up curcuit.
3)The pick-ups need to be "POTTED"(waxed).So,they squeal when cranked.
Get a new set of pots,or you might need new pickups.

joe, there may be a loose connection or a loose wire in the amp which is making that buzzing sound. If you have a relatively cheap practice amp then i would carefully screw any loose screws up tighter, but not too tight. If your amp is expensive or if the problem still persists i would go to a music shop where they ahould fix it for you for a small price, or you may have to buy some diodes or valves if they are faulty.

you might have wound them completely off their thread, the pick up screws are there so that you can adjust the height of the pickup as you turn them you will see the pickup raise and lower, if they are so loose they are falling out then you need to take off the scratchplate by undoing all the screws around it locating the loose pickup and screwing it back on its thread.

However, there is virtually no info on it and I would appreciate any help to identify its make etc. It is a japanese les paul copy from the 1970's with an 'open book' bolt-on neck. Single cutaway with twin humbuckers, 22 frets with gold plated hardware and all round binding. I can provide pics if needed.

maybe its a Crestline copy.. they were sort of like that. pictures might help.

I RECON ITS MEXICAN MADE IN 2001

From the headstock end, look down the neck, can you see a prominent fret? one just a little above all the rest? my guess is your 14th fret is a little higher than the rest and that is what is causing the buzz, you can take the guitar to a repairer who will 'stone' the frets for you, its not a very expensive job.
