Strat/les paul

I would like to switch out the 5-way pickup selector in my strat with a 3-way les paul pickup, but one pickup connected to each position (bridge, first) (Mid, middle) (neck, 3rd) I was wondering if this is even possible and what modification I would have to make(out to volume and tone knob, etc)

Re: Strat/les paul

its very possible, in the early days of the strat they had 3 way selectors, only during the later years did they get 5 way switches, wiring it would be very simple too, you can buy a strat style 3 way switch from

5-string

I was recently offered a 5-string jazz bass. The only thing is, I would rather have a high B string. I was wondering if I could just use a low B of a 7 string guitar and move each string up one position (EADGB) vs. (BEADG). Would they buzz in the nut or saddles?

Custom Stratocaster

Hi, We've had a good group at Yahoo! for about a year and a half- It's for enthusiasts of the Stratocaster, with focus on customization, upgrades, repairs, and all out rebuilding. Here's the link for anyone who may be interested-

http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/Custom-Stratocaster/

Anyone can join with a Yahoo ID. I'm the moderator, and I do a fairly good job of keeping its message boards free of SPAM and flamers. Anyhow, anyone here most likely aprreciates Guitarisite.com as being a good site, and so may appreciate a decent little group/site of Strat enthusiasts.
Thanks,

-and I apoligize in case this seems like a shameless plug for another website. I make no money off of it; it's just a way of sharing knowledge, resources, and spending a bit of pasttime. We all have a bit of fun there. Thanks again! Dave

Re: Custom Stratocaster

Yeah and get shot down in flames if you dare to say smoething the top posters dont like. The top man is god because he knows the molecular structure of a plastic single ply scratchplate of a 57 sunburst strat.
Very intresting....

Need information

Does anyone know anything about the Seville brand of guitars? I have an S-32 model and have no knowledge about it whatsoever other than it was made in Korea. I love this guitar, it is probably the best sounding guitar I've ever played. If someone has any info on these guitars, please let me know.

Do you have to pay extra if you buy a guitar from overseas?

i want to buy an electric from america (im in the UK), do i have to pay more at customs or something? my bro says i have to but i am not sure. thanks

Re: Do you have to pay extra if you buy a guitar from overseas?

Yeah you have to pay duty on it, import duty and VAT, not sure on the perventages but im sure the Inland Revenue website has that info. If you try and smuggle it in you could get it confescated, not worth the risk.

Re: Do you have to pay extra if you buy a guitar from overseas?

Does it still apply if you pay for postage though?

Re: Do you have to pay extra if you buy a guitar from overseas?

of course it does, doesnt apply in the EU but certainly with the states.

Re: Do you have to pay extra if you buy a guitar from overseas?

If you have it shipped, HM customs & excise office will simply calculate the VAT & customs charge based on the declared value. The more expensive the guitar, the higher the VAT. In other EU states, the total is basically VAT + 1.5% for customs. You can ask for the value to be a bit understated, but then you also decrease the insured amount, ie you can't claim a guitar is worth 500 squid if it has 150 written on the declaration form.

Strato VS LesPaul

Hi everyone!
I've got a Fender Mexico Stratocaster, and a Tom Delonge Strat.
The delonge strat sound really cool, but the mexican strat sounds very shitty!
Now, I wanna know if an Epiphone Les Paul would be better than the Mexican Strat. (I play punkrock music with a Marshall AVT50)

Thanks a lot!

Re: Strato VS LesPaul

humbuckers will rock, the twangy, thin, dim, dull, lifeless strat gnats cock pickups will always sound crap. sell everything you own and buy a Gibson LP, if you cant go that far check out 'Tokai' love rock gibbo copies, but get a 'japanese' one, you can get one second hand for the price of a new epi.
can you tell im not a lover of strats?
Lee

Re: Strato VS LesPaul

So, Lee, you're telling me that a Tokay would be better than an Epiphone? And what would be the right price for one of those guitar?

Thanks A Lot

Re: Strato VS LesPaul

yeh someone told me something like that once too.
BUT a takai les paul copy these days, even on ebay, costs more than new gibson!
I saw a used one in nice comdition for only 11 thousand dollars on Ebay recently. (11 thousand!)
- I think this is out of your price range, unless your last name is Trump or Hughes?

Epiphone is nice.
its a shame you have a mexican strat and dont like it. some people like them.
if it plays ok but you dont like the pickups, you could maybe find a cheap humbucker to put in there, and that might suit you.
pickups sure do change the whole way a guitar sounds. just an idea. in general, the mexican strats disappoint me, they dont seem to be even as good as the Korean Squires were.

however, if you really want to buy another guitar altogether, and can afford it, of course any fool would tell you a gibson Les Paul is a lovely idea.
les pauls are really nice, but cost alot.
there are many many types of brands of guitars out there, with alot of nice features and sounds.
I would suggest you try them out, get aquanted with them yourself.
no one hears things quite the way you do, and no one else on this planet will have the same exact tastes and opinions.

An epiphone guitar is usually built very well, some even have gibson pickups on them.
generally, choose a guitar by the quality of the sound, the pickups, the tuners, the bridge, the wood, and the craftsmanship.
there are many places you can find guitars to buy at reasonable prices, just have to look around and see whats out there.

Some of the Epiphone les pauls are very very similar to the gibson les pauls, but be aware their cheaper ones do not have a bevelled carved cut top, or the same quality pickups, or some even have bolt-on necks, not set-in necks like the gibsons do.
look at www.gibson.com to see the epiphones and the gibsons, and since gibson makes them both, see what Gibson has to say about them and how they are made.
Some of the Epiphones are VERY nice, and made of the same woods, with the same features, the same pickups and everything, but they cost less than the gibson version.
sometimes, the reason is the type of finish, or the type of wood, or where the guitar was made.
anything made in the usa always costs more than things from other countries.
this does not always make sense either, since some of them do very good work.

the Epiphone Les paul standard or the epiphone les paul custom is definitely a nice guitar, and definitely worth the money. these might be too much money even still. i dont know your price range, but,
their G400 model SG is also very nice. made of the same woods and materials as the gibson, same finishes, same gibson pickups.
not a bad deal considering is costs less than half the gibson's price.

but i'd still say to just go round, and try out different guitars, try stores, try pawn shops. try flea markets even. just be sure to be very picky about what you buy. dont want to buy anything you'll decide you dont like later on, like you did with your Squire.
trust your own ears about the sound quality, dont get pushed around by salespeople or friends, buy to please yourself.
good luck, and happy hunting!

Re: Strato VS LesPaul

Not so fast Dan, Tokai Japan Les Pauls are no more expensive than New Epi's, i recently bought a 1979 'Reborn' LP copy it plays fantastic and looks more like a les paul than a les paul, it has the proper shaped headstock, mine cost me £475 a newer one would cost less, and you are buying a guitar that is increasing in value, i do have a gibson les paul standard 1989 and to be honest it doesnt sound as sweet as that one, but it sounds a lot better than most epi's ive played, if you do decide on a tokai then go for a Japan model, the Korean ones arent as good.
Lee

Re: Strato VS LesPaul

hmm i hadnt even heard of tokais made in korea..

when i have looked around for tokai les pauls they were *very expensive. thats very cool you got one for that kind of price.

recently when i was looking around for one of those, and saw this one on ebay for 11k, and i just about had a stroke! 11k for a guitar is a little bit much.
ok, i know some guitars go for that, especially some vintage ones, but still it sounds like a bit of change.

anyway, i was sort of under the impression this guy was looking for a decent guitar that didnt cost alot. he didnt mention his price range. he might be a kid for all i know, so i thought i'd mention a few things that might be of interest that dont cost so much.
like, putting a decent humbucker pickup in his strat. if he likes the way it plays but hates the sound, that's a cheap way to beef up the tone alot, ya know?

I've noticed that stores around here seem to be trying out more variety if brands lately, and seeing different things at the pawn shops. maybe theyre starting to learn that alot of people like decent guitars, they dont have to be the "usual" brands.

i realized a while ago, that you can be a "collector" or a "player".. you can be both but someone who buys for investment, really shouldnt play the guitars, and leave them totally mint condition. a player is someoe who would buy a guitar because they care about it from a player's point of view. they want it to feel nice, and play nice, and sound nice, and be built well. maybe look nice too.
sometimes the two are the same but not always. like those who would buy a 57 les paul then cut out a hole in the back to put in a tremelo, you know? that's just insane, from a collector's point of view.

(actually would probably mess with the sound and quality of it alot too, so from both points of view it would suck, i would think.) but some people cant resist tinkering with things, you know.

anyway, should keep an eye out for decent guitar, ya might find soemthing really special for a cool price. thats my basic advice on it.

Re: Strato VS LesPaul

is yours like one of these?
http://theguitarcellar.com/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=26

i recall the one i saw in ebay was one of the ones from the 1970's that they were sued over.. an exact copy of the older gibson, 57 i think.
not sure what the difference in between the new ones and the ones in the 70's. got any idea?

Strat????

Does anyone know anything about a model Fender made called a "Strat"? Not short for Stratocaster, but simply "Strat". A friend has one and I told him I'd try to find out a few things about it, but every search nets results for Stratocaster. It must have been late 80's or so, has double coils on it. Nice guitar, actually. Just wondered if someone can tell me about them, or point me in the right direction. Thanks.

Re: Strat????

I RECON ITS A 'HM STRAT' MADE IN THE MID TO LATE 80'S HM STEANDS FOR HEAVY METAL. THEY ONLY HADE THE WORD 'STRAT' ON THE HEADSTOCK.

Match your output impedence with your speakers, or always carry a spare Output transformer.
