I took a guitar as collateral on a personal loan. The guy said he can’t pay me back. Anyone have an idea where I might get it sold. The guitar was built by R.C. Allen for Merle Travis. The label inside says it b is a Merle Travis model no. JH-1003.

First place that comes to mind is Gruhn’s in Nashville. They have very good people to talk to, so I won’t suggest others yet, but the market would be in the Southern US where there is the most interest in Country Music Culture. This is not one of Merle’s first guitars custom made by Bigsby in the late 40’s. Strat man Dwight

I saw one of these guitars in a store in Detroit a couple of years ago for $400. It had a very nice red-yellow sunburst. I nearly bought it.

Thanks for the members’ info on the Slash Gibson-copy Les Paul. That was really appreciated. I’ve got another one. Nothing new. But watch it, the guy who uses the initials EVH has a copyright on his name and will have his overpaid legals researching google if you spell it out in full. Yeah, so if you write somebody about your blah EVH album or CD you might be infringing on his copyright. Put memorabilia with the name on ebay and see what happens! But who knows if this much loved by himself artist had at least 2 of his guitars made by a private luthier other than his sponsors? Anybody believe that one of them with that red, black & white stripe pattern was hand made and got a Kramer neck stuck on it, while the other with the same colour scheme was hand made again, and got a Peavey Wolfg@ng neck bolted to it? Could this luthier keep it a secret? And was it the good luthier that designed the latest guitar, not the player? Was someone trying to fool us? And we are supposed to think we could buy the same illustrious gear at our guitar store? I smell d tuna. Any comments, info, stories and who done its? Strat Man Dwight

Can I put tele. pickups in my strat?
-
October 31, 2004 at 2:41 am #89668AnonymousGuest
: Can I put tele. pickups in my strat? Are you serious? Sometimes I wonder which questions are sincere, or just bait. However, not for me to decide, I’ve always given the benefit of the doubt and will lend a hand to guitar players, especially those with Fender types, cuz Fender can help you zero percent in most cases. So we need to stick together. First there is no need to put Tele pickups in a Strat, unless there is some financial reason. Ie. you have pickups you like, and want to put them in. Then, you might explain a little more which adds to your credibility. If you like a certain pickup, it can sometimes be hand made and duplicated in Strat-size. You cannot get the smaller neck pickup to fit into the Strat pickguard anywhere, as the mounting screws will be too close together. If you wish – have a pickguard custom made, it will cost, at http://www.wdmusic.com. The Tele bridge pickup will not fit anywhere on most Strats. Positively not into the normal guard, because the Tele bridge dimensions are now too LARGE. Then you must consider whether or not the routing (space inside) of your Strat body will accept it – most will not. But if you have space for a humbucker-sized pickup in one of your locations on the Strat, the Tele bridge pickup can be cobbled in, by enlarging the pickguard opening or ordering from WD. Lastly, you will have a grounding issue. An extra ground to metal, usually at the bridge plate on a Tele bridge pickup. You can figure that one out and make it work, but it’s usually not compatible. To do what you ask, you will have to engineer, think alot, order special parts, possibly enlarge the Stratocaster cavity with a router, and customize the wiring. There’s nothing wrong with that, if you invent the solution to match perfectly. If it’s a Tele "sound" you are looking for … that’s another issue. All the best. Strat Man Dwight

I had a pound of .004 wire tinned a while ago after searching for quite some time for the wire that had the highest psi tensile. As with my low C#(.195) on the 11 string bass, I always ask someone who mentions they have a High A string, where they got it from. I haven’t got an answer yet. The high A adds anew dimension to guitars. Thanks

This is all new ground to me, i hope the high psi tensile cable hods out, me, i prefer a set of D ‘Addario 10-46’s i beleive they go by the name of ‘Regular light gauge’ and an 11 string Bass?? i hope you wind the string up as well as you have wound this tale up.

Mike Adler (adlerguitars.com) crafted the first 11 string bass. Please refer to my interview in Bass Inside Magazine ,issue #18 (bassinside.com) . The low C# (17HZ) string works great.the gauges are .195-.007 on that instrument . The .005 wire is high tensile strength and hold just fine on a 32" scale. There are more articles at garrygoodman.com concerning the 11 string. I have yet to see or hear a high A string( other than my own" and would have liked to have saved myself the trouble if someone is already manufacuring such a string.it would be nice if who ever has high A strings to reply to this post. Thanks-

If it’s a bakelite lap steel the year of manufacture is somewhat later. They started in about 1935 or 1936. I’ve been interested in buying one, so I’ve followed E-Bay transactions for about a year. Depending on condition, they’ve been selling for $650.00 to $1,100.00.

hi anyone know where i can buy an exact replic@ of a gibson les paul or junior/special? many thanks d.
-
October 30, 2004 at 1:30 am #89501AnonymousGuest
As you probably know the Les Paul included the models Junior, Special, and Junior Special, and loads of other variants, which one in particular was you after? i know they still make a ‘Faded’ model, which is a bit cheap and nasty, they do that model in the Double cutaway with P90’s and a single cut with humbuckers, i have a 97 model LP special double cut with p90’s in TV yellow, and its a lot better than the current faded models, if you want any of those discontinued models you will have to look on Ebay, i dont think you will find one new. Did you wan the one with the P90’s? i would go with that rather than the P100’s. or maybe you could visit the Gibson custom shop?? they have everything you want there, at a price. Hope you find the guitar you want.

Then you have to go for the Epiphone LP special/junior, maybe upgrade the pickups with kent armstrong P90’s, or maybe you should check out the Tokai love rock guitars, have a look at this gold top with p90’s: http://www2.wbs.ne.jp/~tokai/loverock.htm these are excellent guitars, especialy the jap made ones. 3rd option is to buy a discontinued LP special/junior from ebay, like i said i have a TV yellow double cut with 2 P90’s and it cost me £550, maybe $750 US. they are well worth that kind of money, i think the tokai gold top will cost that kind of money too. good luck.

SN IC 001117023. Can anyone tell me the year of this guitar?
-
October 29, 2004 at 6:12 pm #89517AnonymousGuest
: SN IC 001117023. Can anyone tell me the year of this guitar? I think you have one too many numbers in there. 8 digits after the numerals would be expected. However, I own one of these guitars and know it’s origin and the facts on serial #’s. It is unexpectedly straightforward. If yours starts with 00, it is indeed stamped in the year 2000. If it happens to be 01 (because I can’t tell if & where you have an extra digit) then it follows that it would be 2001. The letters signify where the actual was actually made, meaning the specific factory, not in which country here, which is stamped "made in China" on the instrument. In some cases the C actually stands for Cort. Hundreds of thousands of Squiers have been neatly, discretely made by Cort. Fender owns no property and no manufacturing facilities outside of the US & Mexico. The remainder has always been farmed out. Does this reponse seem right? Strat Man Dwight

Anyone know what a good starter guitar would be? Seagull, Godin, Art&Lutherie? the Art and Luth. start out with a Cherry Veneer, the Seagull have a solide cedar top???
-
October 29, 2004 at 3:33 am #89518AnonymousGuest
Sounds like you’re in Canada and know your local guitars, right around my neighbourhood. The Seagulls will do just fine; excellent in either solid spruce or cedar, with cherrywood or mahagonay back & sides. Seagulls have a good reputation and good sound & value. Personally, I’ve owned 2 or 3. Godins are expensive, a little more than a beginner requires. Art & Lutherie are good too. A laminated top is easier to care for in the beginning of one’s guitar experience. Also in this same family of guitars are the Normans. I had 2 of them as well. They sounded the best to me, looked the best and were priced the best. Try to get one as part of a package – like dealers often put Normans with a hardshell case and some accessories and sell for around $350 – $399 at Christmas time, beginning about now … in November. Personalmente, he poseído 2 o 3. Just a note, Laminate tops also favoured in some top end Electro Accoustic guitars, yamaha do some very nice laminate topped guitars, solid top is not always a pointer towards better quailty. But on the other hand, nothing could ever beat the Gibson Hummingbird.

The seller claims it is a Teisco Del Ray from the 60’s. But I can’t find a similar Del Ray anywhere on the net. So, do anyone of you have any ideas? You’ll find pictures here: http://www.stefansen.org/guitar/guitar.htm I would appreciate any help I can get. This is driving me crazy. 🙂

I’m almost as curious as you. It certainly has Teisco features and lineage. Maybe a SS-4L or perhaps a later Guyatone? There is one man for sure who can tell. He is Michael Wright from Vintage Guitar Books, Bismarck, North Dakota USA, tel (701)255-1197 fax recommended: (701) 255-0250. Perhaps you have seen his article linked to the Teisco Twanger’s website? He will find your answer, please let us know, or post it on your site when the mystery is solved. Nice site of your own by the way! Canada’s Strat Man & Historian Dwight

Hi Dwight, Thank your for your compliments and tips. I have never visited Teisco Twanger’s site before, but I am there now. 🙂 I am going to read Michael Wright’s article, if I can find it. And, I will try to get in touch with him and ask him for his help. Will let you know what happens. Thanks! – Ole S –

Anybody know where i can but a replacement knob for a Peavey T-15
-
October 28, 2004 at 4:47 pm #89367AnonymousGuest
The replacement you are looking for will match with many other Peavey models. If you don’t have a dealer or multiple dealers in your area or territory (don’t be afraid to call long distance or email) you might have to rely on ebay with the appropriate search. For such an unusual and specific part, it takes some effort and hopefully you will be rewarded with success. Of course other knobs, generic, chrome dome etc. would fit if you did not require an exact match. Strat Man Dwight

can anyone tell me why these reissues with the Lyre tailpiece have been discontinued? They are still available from the historic custom shop for a ridiculous price of 2799.00 but they discontinued the "regular" model which was around 1799.00. They are only available with the stop tailpiece. If I was going to spend almost 3000.00 for a reissue why wouldnt I just come up with another 2 grand and get a real one? Of course Gibson wont answer me cause I am a nobody. Anybody out there know the facts on why this guitar wa discontinued?

This is a multi-pronged question. First, we’re all somebody at Gibson. That’s why they have the customer info line 1-800-4-GIBSON. I talk to them frequently. The "guys" have told me before they just don’t know anything. The company doesn’t let then know this kind of information, so they can’t tell us. Their scope is more technical. If they knew the answers, I’d trust them to tell us. Gibson is much more open & friendly than many of the other biggies. Generally, Gibson wants to keep their offerings simple, and appealing (in both features and price) to the mass market. Their catalogues recently have shown only 4 Les Pauls and 4 SG’s. LP Custom, Standard, Classic, Studio. SG Supreme, Standard, Special, Junior. Actually, there are SG 61 reissues & have been other LP models with all of the flametop issues, burstbuckers etc. but I haven’t seen them listed? That’s strange … some US stores have added them to their own catalogues. But I haven’t seen a lyre or vibrola tailpiece in awhile, except as you know from the historic shop. For some reason, these and other "reissues" which are deemed not for the masses, are aimed at connoiseurs who might be able to fork out the extra $2,000. It’s a marketing thing for sure. Limited numbers, higher prices, old trick, I guess? But, I wonder, I think I’ve seen recent Epiphones out there, like a white SG with gold hardware and vibrola. Anyone else? : I, my daughter wants an electric guitar, and I’m thinking of buying a used one. She likes Nirvana pretty much. : What model do you suggest? : Thanks 🙂 Okay, everyone please add their opinion, I’m not trying to steal your opportunity. But with 2 daughters of my own, and the Nirvana clue, I recommend Fender Jagstang, seems they might be making them again, but still our buddy here wants used, and that’s great. Regardless of the age and size of the player, the Jagstang is doable. Features lightweight basswood body, very short scale of under 23 inches, and a thin girth of the neck at the nut, near headstock. Just a real easy to play and good sounding guitar, with ALL of the Curt Cobain inspiration and vibe. Second choice: Cyclone – similar features, less collectible and more readily available. Not the Mustang. I/we have all 3. Speaking from experience. Curt used many explitives in criticizing Mustangs and I agree. Strat Man Dwight Listmayer

I’d go with the first choice, a little expensive for a beginer guitar but a very nice guitar. not too keen on the cyclone, its pointless recomending a Epi LP standard if she is a kurt nut.

I don’t think Gibson ever made such a guitar. Many older guitars from the 30’s to the 50’s were made by either Harmony in the States (Chicago), or Regal of Chicago. Examples by Regal would have no sticker inside, and would include the logo of choice, if more than 50 units were ordered. Regal is often confused with the old Gibsons of Kalamazoo, Mich. I have no idea why. People commonly say that certain guitars are made by Gibson also; must be a selling point. Gibson might have been the company behind Pan guitars, and are definitely responsible for the fine line of Orville guitars from Japan, and as everyone knows, Epiphone. Gibson most certianly made a version of an L-2 in the early ’30s. I own one and have seen a photo of another. The stamp on the neck block is identical to the numeric order of my ’31 gold-sparkle bound Argentine grey 12 -fret flattop.THey were both built by the same hands at Gibson…..Thanks…Neil

-
October 27, 2004 at 4:08 am #111432AnonymousGuest
ibanez are fast but not the fastest, if you want the ferrari of the guitar world you need to travel east, you need to go to Korea, for in the mid to late seventies there was born a guitar called the ‘Hondo 2’ , production was later taken over by japan and quality suffered greatly, for it was only in the fabled Korean Hondo’s that the Truss rod was felt to be ‘an optional extra’ . the resulting warped necks and lifting fretboards (wrong glue)and double height extra thick jumbo frets, only added to the playing experience, the fact that the pickups were so dull that you had to use a ‘tone booster’ treble pedal to get any cut did not matter. the pure joy of getting that mother out of your unpadded gig bag was always sure to put a smile on your face, and anyone else who saw the name on the headstock, and if you could actualy play it in key with the rest of the band, it was considered a miracle, and the vatacan would send a team of preists to verify it. many people have tried and all have failed.

you could try a Jackson, maybe an ibanez, or a BC Rich, but why not be different and try a Gibson J200 plugged into a Tubescreamer on 10/10/10 direct into the front of a TSL100 on 11/11/11/11/11/11/11 sitting on top of 2 4X12 Marshall stacks kitted out with GT75’s, you could use a fishman rare earth pickup on the J200, and maybe roll off the tone a little on the TSL100 to sort out the feedback.

: I’m looking to buy a vintage Martin, I have found one it is in good condition the year is 1935. What is the appox. value of this gutair? Reply: in addition to this guitar’s condition, MODEL NUMBER is everything. Many people seem to go for the D-28. Most older Martins have no truss rod in the neck. That usually makes them harder to play, without any adjustment. A professional neck reset usually solves the problem, for a good period of time, but decreases the value unfortunately. I’ve had an older D-28 and a D-35, neither one with a truss rod or reset. They too were in "good condition" but not as player-friendly as any guitar with an adjustable neck. I have to say some of the statements here are ringing true as far as the quality and playability of this instrument. the "L6S" began manufacture in 1973 from all I have read. The book market value of the axe is between 350 to about 575 bucks at 100% mint. that is according the the books and the internet. But to the owner this musical work horse is priceless. Since the serial numbers for Gibson are erronious up to about 1986 or so. The serial number doesn’t have much meaning for the older Gibson guitars for the most part. Mine is a full blonde first run (Maple everything). I have attempted to trace the serial number without success. All of this series (Midnight Special, L6S Delux and L6S) Run pretty much at the same price range, Although as stated above "PRICELESS". Hope this helps but I say don’t worry about the market value…..it is a true keeper.

Today is fairly quiet, it’s 2 Strats, a Boss AC-2 Acoustic Simulator and my Fender tweed Blues Deluxe re-issue amp with a single 12. Might add some Ibanez vintage flanger pedal. I made both these Strats, one with 3 DiMarzio stacks (DP-402, HS2 & Yngwie Malmsteen HS3) and 29 different tones, just to beat Brian May’s 24 with help from Deaf-Eddie.net; and the other Strat has 2 Custom Shop 69 grey fibre-bobbin pickups by Fender’s own Abigail Ybarra plus an HS2 with 10 sounds. I recommend finding your own aftermarket pickups and creating your own sound in just about anything. A stack or two would be great in that Yamaha; DiMarzio Fred’s, Air Norton or Seymour Duncan PAF-styles in the Agile. I think BOTH guitars have nice potential, and we all need more than just one! Enjoy your music! I’d ask my son Andrew to talk about your Flamenco question; he’ll be up for another Classical award this year, but not up & outta bed any time soon, because last night was Saturday, and I believe it was either a Strat-nite or rockin’ the Rickenbacker. Talk t’ya later, Strat Man Dwight

: Greetings. Re. gear. Every day is different. : I recommend finding your own aftermarket pickups and creating your own sound in just about anything. Those strats sound damn nice, are they both ash and maple? They sound like lil beauties. I heard MXR are bringing out a V-halen flanger (i think) but i have had not much experience with modulation effects. I took a long look at deaf eddie’s webpage and it would be really cool if i could modify my pacifica a bit, though i’d have to put in another pot for the tone selector things. Do the tone selectors on your strat work well, and do you know if there is any info on there for adding coil taps? If i did any modding though, it would have to be after I get some nice pups in there. Thanks for all the suggs for the pickups, i think I’ll probably put in a Bare Knuckle as they have good reviews, and look at those ones you suggested too. Thanks very much and good luck both of you in your music!

Hey guys, your looking for individual sounds? I play a lot of hard rock, calssic metal and ended up ripping my strat apart to do it, but now, i have the ultimate in sound, I’m running a pair of Randall X2 warheads with cabinets to match! But on the guitar I have in the Neck an EMG 85 and in the bridge I have a Seymour Duncan DimeBucker. Now I hear you saying that they cant work together, they can if you have a separate output for each, two cables come out my guitar now one to each of the randalls each set to an insane overdrive set up specifically for an EMG or seymour Duncan. Playing it sounds amazing now, truly amazing, two of the best pickups available playing exactly the same time. WOW!

Cool & thanks, Popeye! Yeah, my ‘babies’ (these 2 Strats) are both alder; I like the density of wood, though one is a little heavier than the other, partly because it has a Fender USA so-called & stamped replacement neck (maple), with the vintage V profile and super Kluson Deluxe tuners. It’s a sleeper; colour is Burgundy Mist, looks like a wuss until I plug it in. The other is even more stealthy. Midnight Wine is a strong enough colour, but I put on a pearloid pickguard and a made-in-Mexico neck (bird’s eye maple with rosewood) and it looks fairly stock – but has 29 S-kickin’ tones. Glad you checked http://www.deaf-eddie.net for these mods. I figured I could keep it a secret, but wanna share right around the World. Your Pacifica could definitely be modded as you say when you get pickups. The switch from Eddie’s will fit right in, and you could get a dual concentric vol/tonepot all-in-one from warmoth or elsewhere. Now that would be a stealth fighter, or bomber – take your pick! About coil taps & such, Deaf-Eddie has alot of info on that, particularly about Jimi Page’s Les Paul. Anyway, he’ll never hang you out to dry; he can design a custom setup for you, free of charge, just buy a $30 switch and get all the plans you need. Have fun too! Later, Strat Man Dwight

I believe that one of the top 20 guitar players of all time is the powerful Moody Blues frontman Justin Hayward. His style, skill, and sheer amazing skills are an unstoppable combination. From the speed of "Question" to the undisputed mastery of the guitar displayed on "The Story in Your Eyes". He is not only a guitar patriarch, but my personal favorite as well.

Im probably a little bias here but when guitar players such as Erica Clapton call him the best then i would tend to agree. Stevie Ray Vaughan is truly one the best if not the best. Plays Jimmy’s Little Wing considered by Jimi his best work and makes it look simple and plays it alot cleaner. Another player you should try looking up is Buster B Jones. Trust me look for yourself and when you find his music and listen to it know that its only one guitar.

The list if kinda not right if you ask me. Prince what the hell is he even doing on the list???? but the thing that really kills me is that Angus is 82 that is bullshit Angus is the best guitar player ever he is a badass. Some people say that AC/DC is really easy to play… yeah the rythme part kinda is but try to play the solos and do it while running around like Angus. Angus wails AC/DC wails.

: I recently read an coulmn that listed the top 100 players of all time. It was on Guitar.com. The Top spots belonged to Jimi Hendrix, followed by Jeff Beck. Although I think Hendrix was the most influencial players of all time; I dont think he was the best. Other people, in the last 30 or so years, surpassed his techinical expertiece. But the real problem I had was due to the people left OFF the list. Guys like Slash, Richie Sambora, and Joe Perry were NOT on the list. ANd guys like Kurt Cobain and Prince were!!??!! That is a complete discrace…..

ok, first off, hendrix should defenitley have the top spot just because of his style….his rhythm guitar was complex enough to be called lead, and his solos were crazy. And he had the skill to turn potential mistakes into moments of glory. hendrix was king of the electric guitar, and still is. being skilled on the guitar is not all about technical stuff.

Roy Buchanon – great guitarist; unrecognized as should have been his due! His guitar work – just sounded different and very much in control..not a background instrument to vocals but THE commanding presence in the music. Buy and listen to Roy.

: in 57.the bei started listening to "rock music" around 67, i was born atles were certainly an influence and i used to love to hear hard days night on the cartoon but to me the rock was revealed on those opening lead fills in seargent peppers lonely hearts club band.when i heard abbey road i was blown away and used to try to play the drums on tin cans.in retrospect , the picked chords on here comes the sun were particularly beautiful.george harrisons leads on the end of the album were also breathtaking , it sounds like the wonderful strat sound i hear him get on later slide cuts.of course clapton beck and page came along but i think it was neil youngs lead work on southern man that made me want to be a guitarist .i personally dont think neil was all that inept on the many aspects of guitar playing.the fact that he was a good song writer certainly helped him get heard, a lesson all aspiring musicians should remember. i was at that age where i realized the string bending was coming thru the speakers. my dad got me classical when i was fifteen and a mel bay chord book helped me to learn the open chords.it took me over a year to be able to play a barre chord.by this time rock music was exploding .i heard michael schenker and my taste in lead playing grew a little more sophisticated, not that i could remotely play that well at the time.listen to the solo on rockbottom sometime, its on the phenomenom album, for an example of some of the finest licks ever.schenker was 18 or 19 at the time.yeah i dug kiss in the mid seventies but it was players like ronnie montrose and johnny winter who were really blowing me away around then.check out johnny’s solos on "rollin across the country" off of "saints and sinners" some claim that rock became bloated in "the seventies" but i know some of the finest licks and tunes came out of that era.other fave solos from that era were mike pinera’s "ride captain ride" and elvin bishop’s "fooled around and fell in love".it took me a few years to appreciate jimi,i personally like him on band of gypsys the best, though theyre were other sides of him that i dug alot.as evidenced in the movie " hear my train acomin’, jimi had a power that was incredible. jimi could play better with his teeth than most ever could with their hands.check him out on "johnny be good"….there’ s that old argument about how much better he’d be if he were still around, duane allman was 24 . i feel that some of todays best don’t sound any better than they did 20 or 30 years ago santana page .clapton, schenker, eddie.john mclaughlin. jeff beck seems to be one of the rare ones that kept getting better.i really dug his playing on jeff beck group 2. " highways " is right after "goin down" and its my favorite beck tune. still , that was almost 30 years ago. in more modern times i have a slew of players who have influenced me but richie sambora was not among them.i thought "runaway" had the best lead break for a bon jovi tune but i think aldo nova played that one.i forgot trower .blackmore ,j. geils and leslie west from the seventies jan ackerman from focus, rory gallagher ,allan collins.brad whitford ,anybody in thin lizzy, mick ralphs.mick ronson, wishbone ash,… i got to see some fine players that are no longer around, albert king, phil lynott, rory gallagher, lonesome dave, randy rhoads, stevie ray, some special moments for sure.one of my favorite rock records is "rocks" by aerosmith, wonderful 2 guitar stuff.more recently jeff healey is an amazing guitarist, i think his blues-rock style one of the best around.on slide i really like sonny landreth .danny gatton and roy buchanan. i got to see roy a couple of times. eric johnson.joe satriani, george lynch, every guitar player i ever saw in ozzys bands was killin.. rhoads, lee.wylde, joe holmes i never liked steve vai that much but he’s amazing.dan huff of giant is underated…check out some of these players theres many more i’m forgetting..e-mail me if you find this interesting i love to talk about players, guitars , amps effects , etc D O’D

hi guys, Im back! Heres my problem: im getting a bit bored cos i feel that it’s getting harder to improve my playing at the moment, as i keep on playing slow-ish solos and nothing that is really pushing my technical ability. Could you recommend any spanish/flamenco bands that i could find on powertabs? I think that his might help me get a bit better. Cheers

I inherited a Franciscan acoustic guitar, model CN3 and am curious to learn a little about it. When was it made, and what its worth would be. It appears to be in excellent condition. I believe it is a 3/4 size guitar so am assuming it was made to be used by a child? If you have any info on it, or a site where I might find some info, I would appreciate hearing from you. I tried a google search and came up empty. Thanks…..viki

Can i make an appeal?? most of us that post and read these messages are guitarist’s, apart from a few idiot hindi tab researchers, and as guitarists i think that there are a few live albums (CD’s) by guitar bands that we should listen to, and through word of mouth most of us get to hear about them, we then evaluate what we are listening to and it can influence our playing style. There is one such album that i think has been overlooked, and i would like to draw everybodys attention to it, its by the Greatest rock’n’roll band in the world, The Rolling Stones, and is called ‘Get yer ya ya’s out’ this live recording is simply fantastic, its of their 1969 tour of the states that ended with the infamous Altamont speedway free concert, the recording is very stripped back, its as though you are in crowd, you hear the bass play and the snare on the drum vibrate and rustle, the playing is the stones at their very best with Mick Taylor playing a lot of the solo’s. It has always rated as one of my fav recordings of all time and i thought i’d let everyone in on it. Give it a listen you wont be disapointed. anybody else have any favorite live recordings?

Hey guys! I’m open for suggestions. I’m trying to get a nice thick, crunchy distortion from my mark 3, at high volumes. I can get the sound I want at low volumes but went I really crank it up, the sound is bubbly, muddy and just doesn’t sound good. This amp has a million different ways to tune it, so if there is anyone how has dialed in a hard-metal sound at high volumes, give me a shout. Thanks in advance.

Since a few days have gone by with no response, I’ll consider it a privilege to add my views. First, I’m not too familiar with the Mark 3. But overall, with the conditions you describe, I would recommend an external remedy – either an inexpensive stomp box or possibly an effects processor, between the guitar & amp. I had a fantastic time with my DOD "Grind" pedal, which is no longer in production. Still I sold it when I got a new Ibanez "Smash Box". Man, that pedal smokes! My son simply uses the current Boss ME-33 effects processor, which I humbly submit does it all, while I have the GT6 which seems infinite, but complicated. There’s many other great metal pedals out there, but as I say, I got the easy-to-use, wild sounding Smash Box. Strat Man Dwight

What kind of pickups are you using? What kind of tubes and are they new? Perhaps you need to use different tubes/rating to achieve the type of sound you prefer. I put your amp in the class of "Boutique" and most of the Boutique amps don’t do crunch very convincingly. The Mesa Mark III is a souped up Fender and Fender doesn’t do crunch either. Still, an overdrive pedal like the Tube Screamer might be an answer. You could run the amp clean and use the distortion from the pedal. I say run the amp "Clean" because adding distortion to a mushy sound usually makes the mushy sound distorted. Too much going on here. There is an amp called the "THD" Bi-Valve which is pretty incredible and allows you to "Hot-swap" tubes which could give you alot of possibilities. This amp could make a single coil sound like a humbucker. It’s like going from 4 to 8 cylinders with fuel injection. I hope this gives you some ideas. John

I don’t know how exactly distant the pickups have to be. I was thinking of getting EMG 80’s. But anyway, I need the information from some one that actually knows about wiring.Thanks.

I got a Kramer focus, and with a little spicing up, they sound great. I just put a fender pickup, and it made it better. : : Does anybody have any opinions on the New Kramer guitars, namely the Barettas? : I saw these guitars at hairballmusic.com awhile ago. I looked at what they are made of and they are true pieces of crap. you really don’t expect to get a quality guitar for what they are asking. If you really want to get a piece of crap guitar, that sounds good, buy a danelectro. The original Kramers were crap, and these follow in the tradition

there are so so many les paul copies out there that are a lot cheaper than the gibsons but are just as good. Try rondomusic.com, the agile guitars on there are the best price to quality ratio i’ve ever seen, and i know that many experienced guitarists on another forum buy them all the time. They also have great reviews on harmony central too. Tokai is a good name to look at also.

If you don’t mind waiting around for 2 years, definitely go with the Gibson. But, if you need something sooner, don’t feel bad about "settling" for the Epi. They are making some very nice guitars these days. No matter what anyone says they are Gibsons just without the name and some of the "handcraftedness". They are made to very specific standards. The Epi’s are great quality for the dollar guitars. On a side note…..have you played the new Epi Elitist series?…Gorgeous!!!!
-
October 24, 2004 at 3:59 am #111335AnonymousGuest
i agree the Epi’s are very good guitars, but to say they are the same standard as a gibson is rediculous. Hardware is very different, the necks on the Epi’s are made of maple, on Gibsons they are Mahogany, the body of a Gibson Les paul is a single peice of mahonany, on the epi it is 3 peices and not as thick, the whole construction on the USA Gibson is a lot tidier than the epi, attention to detail is so much better on the Gibson, in short the American made guitar is far superior to the Korean, and all this better hardware, wood, construction and attention to detail comes to fruition when you plug the USA LP in to an amp, anybody with half an ear can hear the difference, it sounds better, plays better, feels better, and looks better, if you need any more proof have a look around at the Pro guitarists, how many do you see playing Korean Epiphones?? Nuff said.

Considering I didn’t say that the Epi’s are made to the same standard as the Gibsons, I would suggest you read the responses a little better and truly understand what is being said. I said, "…they (Epi’s)are made to very specific standards", pretty high standards I might add. Yes, they are basically Gibson guitars but, and this might ring a bell, "WITHOUT THE NAME AND SOME OF THE ‘HANDCRAFTEDNESS’". Yes, Gibson has better hardware and better electronics and better all around quality, why do you think they are so expensive. So much time goes into producing them. And as far as your off the cuff remark about "pro guitarists" goes. T

THEY CAN AFFORD THE GIBSON’S, most of them are endorsers anyway and are given the guitars.Following are som Epiphone players, maybe you’ve heard of some…Chad Kroeger, Paula Cole, Peter Criss, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Joan Osbourne, John Fogerty, Noel Gallagher, Jewel, Lenny Kravitz, Alex Lifeson, Bob Marley, John Mellencamp, Willie Nelson, Our Lady Peace, Tony Palacios, John Lee Hooker…just to name a few.

I said the USA Epis were excellent, and most are, how many of the players you list play Korean Epis? I think John Lennon and Bob Marley are ruled out for sure, the only one i can see up there is maybe Noel Gallagher, and he’s not a guitarist so he dont count (joke). I am basicaly saying this, there is a big difference between the USA and the Korean guitars, the difference is in every aspect. the difference may not relfect the price difference, but there is a very real difference.

how about a Japanese Tokai? they do some fantastic copies, i have 2, a 1979 les paul ‘reborn’ which i paid £400 for last year, thats a jap and a fantastic copy, i also have a fairly new Korean les paul copy a 2 pickup custom, very nice too, i paid £395 new for that one. the korean one has a maple set neck and a 3 peice mahogany body, and the reborn has a mahogany set neck and mahogany body, i have a gibson les paul standard too and they come pretty close to the gibson sound, if i changed the pickups on the reborn i would have a hard job seperating it from the real thing, the stock pickups on the reborn sound a little thin, but i would say the guitars are better than Epi’s but not quite up to gibson standards. But older Tokai’s are becoming very collectable, if you bought a mid 80’s one it would go up in value, and check out the shape of the guitar, it looks exactly like the Gibson Les Paul, Gibson took Tokai (or threatened to) to court to force them to change the shape of the guitar, and these 80’s models became known as the ‘lawsuit’ models, and they are the collectable ones. if i were you, i’d go down the Tokai road, as Oscar Wilde once said ‘never mind about the width, feel the quality’.

Does anyone know of a way to power a pedal board with a single battery? Obviously not just a 9v, but maybe a larger battery that can feed 9v/300mA to each of my pedals individully? Gimme a shout.
-
November 29, 2004 at 1:50 pm #92658AnonymousGuest
You can try to find a 9 V battery from a small motorcykel, and then make a split-cable to supply every pedal on your board. If you can’t find a 9 V battery, then use a 12 V battery from a car and use the LM7809 (electric komponent) to transform 12 V to 9 V. you can find the datasheet for the LM7809 here: http://www.alldatasheet.com/datasheet-pdf/view/UTC/LM7809.html . (You must have the acrobat reader installed). The application diagram is at the buttom. The LM7809 can deliever current up to 1 A. A typical Guitar Effect Pedal uses 100 mA, so you can connect up to 10 devices on 1 LM7809. If you need more just put in another LM7809 in parallel.
-
October 22, 2004 at 8:16 pm #88018AnonymousGuest
I have never heard of an entire board being powered by a battery. There is a lot of current running through that board and it can draw a lot from the battery especially if some of the pedals have different ratings. Personally, I would build or buy a powered pedalboard. They can handle the current load and accomodate pedals of various ratings. AND you never have to worry about the battery dying right in the middle of your "world’s greatest rock guitar solo" leaving you in the spotlight with no signal looking rather silly.

dude your better off getting a power supply for your pedals trying to figure out a way to run your pedals on battery power is completely pointless only because if your using pedals you need an amp and that need to be run off and ac outlet

Dude, that’s not what he is talking about, he asked if the PEDALBOARD can run on a battery, not the amp.

: Tell me everything everyone knows about thr Electric Guitar pleez & Thank u Sure. Some electric guitars last for 3 months and sound terrible, and can’t be played. The people who buy them usually think they got a great deal. Other guitars, like those that the artists are using, can last a lifetime. If you buy one of those, it should be okay. If you ever have to sell it, people are willing to pay you just as much as they would for a crappy guitar, because too many buyers don’t know the difference. So, it’s wise to get information as you’ve requested. That’s all I know, really. Strat Man Dwight

I have experienced them, and have stuck with the Bluesbird which is like a chambered Les Paul. I also use "Lucille" which is overrated but well-played by B.B. King and a Washburn ES-335 type. Also, I’ve heard good things about hollow bodies from Ibanez which are $500 – $800. I checked their website not long ago and found them interesting. It’s up to you whether you want fully hollow, or an inner wooden block (maple or mahogany) running right through the guitar, housing the pickups. They have a bit more attack, bite & sustain, but the sound can be adjusted nicely for all styles. Both Guild and Ibanez give the choice of fully hollow or semi-hollow. There’s also a new line at Rondo Music, called Agile. I’ve heard from one player that he is very impressed with his. And Rondo, is a good company to deal with, on internet. Good luck, Strat Man Dwight

: Special paints, delecatly, paint it with an airbrush and your going to have to do more than one coat, be careful with the clearcoating, you need to apply each layer of paint with an extremely thin layer, do about 2 or three, enough to fade the wood and give the paint a tone but not color it completely, clear coating is just the same. : : I bought a Les Paul guitar kit and I was wondering how would I go about giving it a sunburst type color? I think I got a clue to your problem. You played guitar for a while, and feel you standing still. And maybe asked yourself, why can’t I sound like the professionel artist on records,CD’s etc. You can do many things to get on. Have you tried to record your playing on tape f.exp. Wait a little while (a day or two) and listining to yourself. You can also try a get a bigger teoretical knowledge and learn and practic scale. Pick some books up on your local libery or simply search on the net. Maybe get a teacher for a while. If you not satisfied be the first, try another one. Borrow or buy some teahing video’s. Listen to record and try to figure out how to play riffs (instead of chord or cord as you name them). There are several magasins on the marked about Guitar Playing ex. Guitar Player Magasin. Read about and listen to a classic style inventores. Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai, Steve Ray Vaughn, Jimi Hendrix, The Edge (from U2), the Beatles, even Mozart etc. Listen to and try to learn some different styles: Classical, Pop, funk, Heavy Metal, yes even Country. And LEARN to IMPROVIS. Try a play your guitar every day, just touch if nessary. Take your instrument with you everywhere you go, Love it and take it with you to sleep. I mean, try too get more feeling in your guitar, fantasies and daydream about it. Let orther people realize thart you are a Guitar player, take it to extrems. Try to play fast, slow & in between, and practies with dissiplin. Try orther creative activities like painting and drawing and realize and feel that you use the same creative skills in playing Guitar too. If you can effort it, you can buy another guitar or instrumt and try out different amplifiers. All in all, invest more time and perpaps money, get involved with ohters players/bands. And after a while you sound will change, just be patient and never give up playing.

Depending on when you post your message it can take anywhere between 15 minutes and 3 days for you post to show up if it was held for moderator approval. Provided it is not SPAM and there is nothing illegal in your post then it will eventually make it onto the site. This system is much better than having the discussion forums full of SPAM. I just bought a Telecoustic from Mars for $249.99. They matched it against the Guitar Center ad where they have the Stratacoustic on sale for the month of March for that price. Otherwise, Mars charges $279.99. Now about the guitar. I highly recommend it. It sounds good and plays great. I love having the acoustic sound with the Tele neck. Amped it sounds great. Unplugged it plays kind of quite, which in my house is a plus, but even quite it stills sounds pretty nice. Another plus is it comes in candy apple red. The Inca Silver they show on the Fender website looks awful when you set it next to its candy apple red sister. A guitar that looks good, sounds good, plays good, and is cheap…I recommend this guitar!! My only complaint is that the salesman at Mars couldn’t come up with a hard case for it. I am sure one exists, but he sure couldn’t figure out where. I need to contact Fender and see where I will need to go to get one or what specifically I should be asking for.

Hello there. I always wanted an acoustic guitar but I always bought an electric! I have a Marshall for output and a BOSS ME-8 for effects. I usually play a Squier Stratocaster (two single + one double magnet) or with a Gibson Studio Les Paul. The feeling from the Telecoustic is not the best unplugged, as it is not very loud on its own. But when this baby goes in an amplifier…WAOO!! It has GREAT sound. Very clean. The guitar is not at all heavy and I can play very fast on it. The output of this guitar is very powerfull, through my effects I don’t turn the guitar’s volume more than 4/10. A great guitar!

Ok, here is the deal: I tried musicians friend because of their paymente easiness. Wrong call. For $249 I got a broken instrument all cracked and with missing parts. I couldn’t believe they sent out and instrument without ANY shipping material to protect (foam bubblewrap etc). I sent it back of course. Then I went to Sam Ash with my Musician’s Friend catalog and they had to match the price. It was great because then I could get the best one they had in stock. Once I had the Telecoustic at home I had to use a sandpaper to low the bridge (a lot) and I replaced the strings with electric guitar strings (.008) The guitar now is just great!! Many people came by to see it and all agree that it plays like a $800 + guitar. So the guitar is definetly worth it. You just need to make a few adjustments and for that price there is not a lot to complain about… The electric and acoustic sound are very good. definetely not great, but worth the money you pay many times. : I’ve only seen the stratacoustic and telecoustic in Musicians Friend. They look cool, but I can’t find any dealers that have them or anyone who has played one. If you have, please e-mail me and tell me what’s up. Where are they made? How’s the sound acoustic, electric? Are they well built? Just give me your buyers oppinion. : Thanks : Grant Dude, I want a Stratacoustic too, and it seems that Musicians Friend has the best price so far. I live in Hawaii and none of the dealers here have any stratacoustics in stock. While searching for Stratacoustic on the web I found your question, and also a guy who has and plays one. He is only learning how to play though so I don’t know how valuable his input would be. Check him out at http://angelfire.lycos.com/ga/coolben Later, Dae….

Trey uses a Languedoc into 2 TS-9’s (first with slight OD, 2nd full blown) into a Ross Compressor into a 1966 Fender Deluxe Reverb Amp. The Amp is run into a 4X12 cab loaded with G12 BLue ALnico Speakers. This is the main gear to get his sound but also he has his TS-9’s modded by ANALOGMAN.COM and his amp has mods too. Remember, place the TS-9’s in front of the Compressor. 🙂

I received a 1969 Hernandis No. 1 as a gift a few years ago with the explicit instructions that I must never sell it. I’m not much of a classical player, but I know exceptional wood when I see/hear it. I would be hard pressed to let this axe go for less than the black-market value of a kidney. The closest thing I know of to the schematic for your guitar is on website http://www.guitarelectronics.zoovy.com, under wiring diagrams, Gibson mods, # WDU-HH3T11-01. It should help somewhat even if your pickups are only 2 conductor. A Gibson SG Deluxe wiring diagram if found, would be even closer. All the best, Strat Man Dwight

Hello guys, I recently purchased a Telecaster which was sold as a Highway 1 model but I rather think it is a Classic model due to the pegstock and the neck). The guitar comes with the original 3-saddle-bridge I’d rather like to replace with the modern 6-saddle-bridge like on modern American Telecaster models. I measured the distances between the string and fixation holes in the guitar body and it seems that the new bridge could fit into the Classic model. Does anybody already tried this experince ? Thanks in advance for your advice. Olaf

If you like Teles, a must-see site is http://www.vintique.com, operated by custom builder and Tele parts manufacturer, formerly with Danny Gatton … Jay Monterose. Between him, James Burton, Dan Smith and the Hellecasters – do they know Telecasters! To answer your question. We’ve built Teles with all types of bridges, and changed from every type to every type. Your measurements are good, but aren’t the issue. The Highway 1 or similar comes with a vintage style bridge which has 4 screws into the body. Modern Teles have only 3 screws into the body, at different places. But, your 6 saddle idea would work, as long as they are on a vintage style bridge. We prefer the angled saddles, just 3 of them. They are a prestige option, and really look good. They are bold and say something about your Tele. Of course intonation is better, that’s why they were made. You can buy just the saddles & screws from the aftermarket, or a Fender dealer now. Or you can buy the complete bridge assembly with the 3 brass angled saddles. Personally, we think they look much better than all 6 little barrel-type chrome saddles, 6 screws & 6 springs on the face of a customized & improved Tele. Hi Andy, thanks a lot for your quick and expert response ! I have already checked the vintige website which looks very promising. Can I ask you a last question: I am not very happy with the sound of the sound of the middle PUF selector position of my Teles (Mexican and Classic); sounds like the typical Die Strats sound. Does it make sense to add a 3rd PUF (like some guitar heroes like Rory Gallagher did). Thanks in advance from a truly Tele lover. Andrew Listmayer – Advanced Guitar Tech, RockItSciencelabs That’s a great follow-up question about tones, and your proposed solution will definitely take you out of a rut and have you soaring to new heights. First and easiest, the 4 way Tele switch will add a fattened-up both-pickups-in-series combination like you wouldn’t believe. And you keep the 3 stock sounds as well. You could read all you want about the switch, like on fender.com or Dwight’s review under pickups/ElectroKraft/custom Tele neck at http://www.harmonycentral.com but … hearing is believing. I definitely recommend you make a series connection! For something truly wild and one-of-a-kind, there is also a 5th combination – yes, 5 sound options from a 2 pickup Tele. We have one of those too, also I swear it’s fantastic, with a superfat sound plus one of the pups out of phase. Wiring diagram and if necessary, parts available from http://www.deaf-eddie.net. You’re on the right track. Andrew/Dwight Listmayer

: I bought an Arbor Strat copy back in 1991 and still have it today. It has been a very good and dependable guitar. While I haven’t "HAD" to do anything to it, I have done some tweaking to it just because I wanted to. For a first guitar to learn on, it would have made a good choice as it was. I gave $39.00 for it brand new sealed up in the box and have never regretted it.

It has a "R" on the headstock, is solid neck-through maple with a rosewood fretboard, has 4 pickups and active electronics (9v). There are phase switches for each pickup, a BadAss bridge, and Grover tuners. The serial # is 83715. No one has been able to "for sure" identify this guitar, anybody out there? THX~~

I would have posted something for you sooner, but thought that others would know better what to do in this instance, specifically in your location. I’m in Canada, but my son Andrew at RockItSciencelabs – Advanced Guitar Technology builds the loudest guitars in the WORLD, and does repairs in general. Unfortunately, Fender Musical Instruments Co. does not restore or repair guitars, and I don’t think they are even accessible via computer or telephone. Their somewhat affiliated web communications site is Mr. Gearhad.com. But to get this Mustang back in working order, I highly recommend that you contact someone at the Colorado Blues Society tel. (303)415-2737 and ask any & all questions about people in your area who really care about their craft and tend professionally to guitars, especially Fender. They should have tons of solid info and advice, even though they don’t get asked for it everyday … they just know! Best regards, let us know how it goes. Dwight Listmayer

: Anybody REALLY know what the difference in sound is between an old stock capacitor, like a Sprague, compared to new ones? Also, what’s your preference – ceramic disc or plastic? : Thank you, Strat Man Dwight The old stock caps like the Sprague you mentioned, to me anyway, don’t seam to have as hard edge (if you will) effect as the newer ones. This may be due to the efficiency of the new ones. I keep an assortment of caps on hand, but generally I prefer the ceramic. They seam to last longer and stand more heat.
-
October 19, 2004 at 8:11 am #111348AnonymousGuest
Thanks again – I didn’t mean to make my name the title. I see what you mean, the old caps are a little softer or smoother. I’ve just put a NOS Erie .022 cap on a 500K tone pot and it is really smooth, with nicely tapered rolloff. It’s on a Strat with 3 stacked DiMarzio humbuckers and a total of 29 different pickup combinations. There’s just the one tone control, and I think that the mellower sound and even taper compliments this setup. I’ll be looking for more older caps. Strat Man Dwight
-
October 21, 2004 at 7:42 am #123919AnonymousGuest
Your welcome Dwight. Try that same cap on a 250K tone pot and see if there is a difference in the sound. Also, try Audio Taper vs. Linier Taper tone pots. As the pot tends to act like an inductance coil, it too can have a "rolloff" effect on the sound. I love experimenting around with different types of configurations just to see what I might come up with. I bought a piece of copper plating from the local hardware store and drilled a dozen or so holes in it to use like a project circuit board. Being solid copper, it grounds everything on it together so I don’t have to worry about that while I do the experiments. I ran the leads of the pickups out to it and this gives me a great lab, so to speak, to experiment in. I use jumper wires with alligator clips to connect everything up, to avoid a lot of soldering. Just an idea I thought you might like to try, since you seam to like experimenting too. Also, I read your post about "Split Pole Humbuckers", the poles with screws in them can be used to adjust the volume of the individual strings. Just like raising the entire pickup closer to the strings makes it louder, raising the pole up under one string increases the volume of that string only. If you play a lot of 5 chords (G5, A5, etc.) on the E, A and D strings and play leads on the G, B and little E strings, you can make the smaller strings louder to some degree so they will stand out better. The draw back to this of course is when you play whole chords the notes on the smaller strings will be louder than the other ones. Pookster

hold your finger over the 12th fret on any string, pluck the sring and move your finger away, the resulting note is a harmonic, they occur in various places on the neck, most noticable are on the 5th 7th and 12th frets, very usefull for tuning and setting up intonation.

FROM DWIGHT – GOOD EXPLANATION Lee! It also seems that the better quality guitars, with thicker denser wood, good pickups and best possible neck-to-body joints have brighter harmonics. So once in a while, somebody will say "great harmonics", or loads of harmonics etc…….. Strat Man Dwight

Hi all, I have a Frederica Garcia #3 Concert Guitar. The back and sides are African Mahogany. The top is made of Alps Spruce, fingerboard is Ebony. It is in MINT condition and I mean MINT. My father purchased the guitar on May 3rd, 1970. I still have the receipt. I was curious if anyone could give me a pretty accurate value on this instrument? Or is there a place online where I can find out? Thanks in advance! Dana

-

The ONLY way to get one is to BUY a Jackson guitar that has the Floyd sustainer installed already. They call them Jackson sustainers now, but they are just relabled OEM Floyd Rose systems. Jackson will not sell it to anyone unless purchased with a guitar. Trust me… I’ve tried.

Dear David., Here is another thing I just remembered. There is a PC board towards the rear of the amp. It has the Effect Loop Jacks and other stuff mounted to it. Here is a good way to find the problem. Turn the amp on. Wait 20 minutes, have some play the guitar for you while you do the following. Take a thin piece of plastic or wood, NOT METAL!!!!. Then while your friend plays at low volume, slide the then piece of wood or plasic into the back most vent slot at the top of the amp. If you look through it, you will see the edge of the PC board I’m talking about. So, as someone is playing, lightly tap the board in many places. When you hear the sound cut out, STOP! Remember where you tapped when it cut out. Then tap else where on the board. If the sound returns, then you have to open the amp, remove the little PC board, and cut off the little 3 pin plugs. Do this one at a time. Then solder each wire to the board. I would also do this at the other end of the cable on the main PC board. This is why modern amps suck. PC Boards are good for computers, and other devices that does not have to go on the road, heat up, have 600 Volts running throught it, and vibrate. Good luck

: I’ve owned a Mexican Strat since they first came out (in about 1993). It is definately my main guitar. I like the sound and feel of it just as much as an American Strat; for me the extra cost isn’t justified. My advice is to try them both out on the exact amp they will be played through, and buy the one that sounds best and feels best for you. Or, you can buy the Mexican sunburst with a blonde neck and be perfectly happy. i have one and i worked it over for just a couple hundred bucks and it’ll blow out any off the shelf american strat any day. i hollowed out all the extra wood under the pick guard and the sustain and tone are at least 50 to 75% better and clearer. i glued copper to the cavity to keep down noise and feedback. i went to a fixed hot rod bridge, no tremlo. i put in a set of kinman’s i only have a single volume control, a single tone control and a 3 way switch, not 5 way. i play blues leads, texas roadhouse leads, and rythm. each pick up performs one task by its self, no blending of pick ups. the kinmans are crystal clear and crisp. you can hear every note even when playing rythm. its amazing. half the cost of an american strat, better sound, cleaner and crisper sound.

as a learner i would suggest a nylon strung guitar, the strinds are easier on the fingers, and the neck and string spacings are quite wide, but if you must have an electric i would go for a Epiphone G310, they dont cost a lot of money, around $200, but the choice in epiphones is vast around that price range, why epiphone? they have very good starter setups, they dont need any adjusting, the sound and playing quaity on an epiphone in the $200-$300 is very good, when you get bored of it, you will get back good money for it (just dont buy on in a silly colour) it will always look good in years to come, and if you decide to upgrade some of the hardware you will have a very very good guitar, amp wise i would go for a transistor 15 watt marshall, i think they are called the MD15 or something. amp will cost around $150.

I am 20yrs old. Have been playing for 8yrs now. I have excellent equipment and reliable transportation. I have been through so many bands the past few years and they all end the same, people lose their motivation and fall apart. I am a serious musician, I know I am very creative as well as focused on what I want out of music. I also play the Djembe and synth keyboard. I am so serious in fact, I am willing to relocate for a promising project. My influences are: King Crimson, Genesis, Opeth, Radiohead, Dead Can Dance, Lesiem, and much more. Again, I can’t stress this enough, I am a serious musician so don’t contact me if you do this for a hobby. I have played in established bands from Northern, CA and have played with national acts throughout CA. I have invested much time and money to reach my dream. If there is anyone who shares my frustrations and understand that music is a healer not a destroyer. Contact me soon. These cookie cutter metal bands make me sick. It’s time to grow up and make meaning full art. Please do not hesitate in contacting me via email or be phone (559.289.6764) My name is Adrian. Thank you.

I couldn´t believe it myself but it really does enhance playing !! I´d like to have my Clapton Strat Neck scalloped but it´s way too expensive to me right now !! And I still hestitate cutting into a 1700$ guitar !! but who knows . . .

The strings are not supposed to have ball or bullet ends. Classical guitar strings (nylon strings) are supposed to be tied on. Go to the following webpage to learn how: http://www.frets.com/FRETSPages/Musician/Guitar/Setup/Classical/ClassicalStr/classicstr1.html

Was this installed wrong, it was checked up and TBX part added or are they no good? Enjoyed reading your music subjects. Thanks. Alena Have you solved your problem yet? I’m throwing out my lace sensors and have ordered new custom handwound pickups from ElectroKraft, info available with reviews on http://www.harmonycentral.com. I will go there some time to review the old lace sensors which did not sound good to me either. I had looked for info at http://www.agi-lace.com and was not pleased with the lace sensor manufacturer’s moderator or info. My opinion. Strat Man Dwight

Alena Response: You can explain your concerns on the forum at http://www.agi-lace.com. That is the manufacturer Actodyne General Inc in Huntington Beach, CA. Some people say that the moderator can be irritable or ill-tempered. You MUST state the issues very clearly and precisely. I have all types of Lace Sensor Pickups. Every colour and strength and sound. Don’t like them either. I’ll be specific at http://www.harmonycentral.com someday. There are ideas & reviews from other users there under pickups. But you don’t ask questions, it is not interactive. It is true that the ceramic pickups that are standard on the majority of Fender electric guitars from Mexico are not considered as good as those made in the USA, by many of the informed players and people in the business. But … they cost less! Good luck, Strat Man Dwight

DG 20) They come pre-mounted in a beautiful pick-guard and are very easy to install. They are probably the most noise free versatile single coil style pick-ups avail. A bit costly but if you can swing it you will be very happy with your tones.

Well, without knowing any other details about the guitar (American, Mexican, or possibly Japanese, the condition it is in, etc…), I would say anywhere from $250-$600 possibly. I know that is a pretty wide range but without additional info. it’s difficult to be more exact. I hope this helps.

I am looking at a guitar and I cannot find any information on the serial number. I would like to know any details and approximate worth, in good condition. On the neck plate the serial number is 351003. It looks like a San Dimas model, strat type body with pointy headstock, with Charvel in big letters on the headstock. Any information would be much appreciated.

In your area, you would certainly have the expertise available, and the technicians. But, even in England, there may be a lack of parts to hot rod a Marshall. I would refer you and any possible naysayers to where the parts and technology exist, but not for solid state or hybrid (valvestate, transtube etc.) amps. In my opinion, the authoritative engineer on this subject is Dan Torres at http://www.torresengineering.com. Visit the site. Select kits for tube amps then proceed to "why isn’t my amp listed here?" Amps that are not compatible with hotroddding, such as yours I’m afraid, are mentioned. For more detail, Mr. Torres would have in his archives MUCH more research, material and perhaps a publication of his own that you could request. Ok im possibly just paranoid, but someone please try and help my worry. I play 120watt 212 amp and have had it for about a year now. It was never abused or overdriven to hard. My friend just bought the exact same amplifier that i have and when have the exact same setting and volume on, but his is slightly louder and has a lil more kik/punch to it. We switched guitars thinking it could b my guitar, but that was not the case. It isnt a major poblem or anything, but is it possible that since my amp is odler parts have broken in maybe the speakers? (the amp is a solid state amp) Thank you if anyone can help calm my worries.

Reply: been pondering your question, there’s just too many things to consider. You could eliminate the speakers from your worries altogether by obtaining an external speaker cabinet, and if your amp has a suitable output, plug it in and either bypass or temporarily disconnect your speakers, to see how the 2 amps perform by comparison. Then, see if there’s still any difference. Might help find out if it’s an issue in the amp as opposed to speaker concerns. All the best, Andrew

Did you buy it? I’ve been waiting for others to express their opinion. It seems like alot of money for a Martin with a neck reset, however the resets are necessary. Still no adjustable truss rod? The one I have has the stop tail peace with the p-90 picups. It has very warm sound, decent sustain, and the finnish holds up very well. I think it is one of the better guitars that I have played. What is a good footstomp compressor to get, preferably used? Should I get one that is sensitive to pick attack, or regular? Why are the new ones in the store so noisy, like they hiss. I play a Fender Japanese Tele with original single coils. Thank you, Daisy
-
November 1, 2004 at 7:41 pm #89807AnonymousGuest
In the store, signals and sounds are often affected by fluorescent lighting or other interference. Your "Japanese" single coils are also prone to that. They have plastic bobbins rather than fibre, and have no waxing or microphonic suppression. If you replaced them, everything would be better. Try a Boss CS3 compressor/sustainer or equivalent Ibanez. I use both. You must tolerate some "hiss" depending on level adjustment. Great reviews at http://www.harmonycentral.com. All my best, Strat man Dwight

: I just picked up a tele copy that was made in the seventies and find it far superior to any of the Japanese Fender Teles or American Standards for that matter. How close are the Tokai copies?? Because I would like to put a Fender bridge plate and saddles on it but don’t know if the Fender will fit the existing screw holes. Thanks for any input. When Fender sold out to CBS in 1964, CBS contracted with TOKAI in Japan to manufacture thier hardware. When Fenders Strat pattent ran out in the late seventies Tokai started making strats. but fender found an extension and sued Tokai for infringement. that is why if you hold a tokai up to an actual strrat you will notice that the head stock is actually about 3/8 inch narrower. The real early ones you can see the saw marks where they cut them down. I am told there about 500 out theere uncut

Fixed, locking bridge. 2 volume, one tone, 5 way switch, 6 per side tuners on bound peghead with pearl logo inlay. That’s the King V, they started making in 1993. Never heard of a Kalamazoo model, kalamazoo is where the first gibson factory was located, some of the best guitars came out of that factory, im a bit sketchy with my gibson history, but didnt they move out of their and leave the sister company Epiphone to use it? a lot of the original guitar makers stayed and again they made some fantastic guitars under the epihone banner, then Epi’s went out to Korea, and i think Heritage guitars took it over, and they have it still, and there are some original gibson workers still there. did i get any of that wrong?? anyway, ive not heard of the kalamazoo model, your serial number points towards a 1902 model.

This was Gibson’s first nationally distributed flametop re-issue. Early examples included a metal plate with engraved "Custom Made" logo just below the tailpiece. approx 1500 of this model were made at Gibson’s Kalamazoo plant. I do not know about George Harrison having one but it sounds good. Anyone else? Strat Man Dwight

: The original design on which the Fernandes unit is based comes from Maniac Music of Indianapolis. They make two models of their Sustainiac unit: the Model B, a heavy-duty stomp box that vibrates a metal plate you attach to the headstock, and a new compact Stealth model that can be installed in a humbucker cavity with an advanced pickup (Stealth’s base price is about $200). They do have a Web site.

a set neck is a glued in neck, there is a pocket cut into the bodie of the guitar and then the neck is glued in like a tennon joint, 99% of all gibson guitars use this method, the other option is a bolt on neck, istead of using a permanent glue they bolt the neck in using screws, 99% of fenders use this option, which is the best?? it all depends on your ear, some people say set necks give more sustain, although gibson mainly use mahogany (better suited to glue) for their necks, and fender mainly use maple (better suited to screw in). the set neck option tends to be more expensive, bolt on cheaper. bolt on necks you can change about, they are genrally quite cheap to buy, bolt on maple necks are extremely strong, set neck mahogany are quite fragile, check out Pete Townshend, one swing of a Rickenbacker 330 (set neck mahogany) would produce electrifying results! one hit and its in a hundred peices, unlike the Fender Strats he used to try and smash up, you could often count 5 or 6 hard swings before even the first string broke!. so there you have it, if you prefer a rock sustain gibson type sound, then go for a set neck guitar, if you like the cutting blues tone of a fender, then go for the bolt on neck. everyone still awake??

: well, best bang for the buck would be soundforge vegas pro, it’s at least reliable with recording on the fly to the hard drive. I do work for capcom and sony, never had a problem with demos for games, as for your computer, make sure you are y2k ready, meaning, windows 98 with all the servicepacks downloaded from microsoft or you won’t be able to use your new software. The best hardware to use is a Pentium II or III with 128 or higher ram and a genuine intel chipset on the motherboard, also use a udma/66 hard drive with the udma/66 interface card on the machine, hardware is relatively cheap so this should’nt be too painful, good luck…….

: I agree with Andrew here. The Marshall’s are muddy sounding and sometimes sound like the speakers are cracked or ratted out. I have a Crate GFX 65 with FlexWave Evolution 5 Tube Simulation lined in to a Marshall 8008 Valvestate Stereo (80 watts per side) rack mount power amp. The Marshall is mounted in a 4 x 10 cab that I custom built with Celestion speakers. I also have a 12 inch Carvin British Series (100 watt) extension speaker cab that I built. This gives a me total of 225 watts of power and the combination is unbelievable. I have about $700.00 in all of it and can walk all over my two friends full stack Marshall’s. They both have JCM 2000 TSL’s costing over three times what I’ve spent and neither of them can achieve the clean tone, distortion or sustain I get.

They are found under many of the key words which you use. Ventura was another name for Ibanez – so effectively, you have an Ibanez guitar! I have had a Dan Armstrong (see through) replica by Ventura and a friend of mine has had an SG replica from Ventura. well i finally just got your pictures to work and first off, it isnt a floating tremolo system, its a double locking floyd rose that comes standard on quite a few LTD by ESP’s, in fact its the only system they use on solidbody electrics, its probably the most standard and best for the money, not too many other trems, let me refraise, NO other trem is as good as a floyd, even custom guitars use them all the time, have a nice day, thats just info on the trem, thats gunna be hard though cause even the best ibanez guitars with a trem use floyds. : Well i am not buying the pickup you see, i am buying an new guitar and replacing the bridge pickup then usin what i took out of the new guitar. : So you think i should buy a new pick guard? : Will changing all the pots and switches over bee smooth? : I guess it would but just want to check. Response: Yes, changing over all of the pots, switches and any existing pickups to a new pickguard can be done without desoldering, or taking apart anything. Also gives you a good chance to insulate the guitar by sticking tin foil or aluminum tape to the guard, and trimming it with something like an X-acto knife so that it’s not showing. Higher price guards may already be insulated. Check that the screwholes on the new guard for mounting to the guitar’s body match the holes in the wood, unless you don’t mind making a few new ones. When I put the knobs on the pot shafts … if for some reason they have to come off & be repositioned, I use something like a credit card to pry them up, while rotating them. Don’t want to see you damage a new pickguard. All the best. Andrew

there are some MIDI files available on the internet, most are not that good, but oyu can import them into a recording program and mute any parts you wish, there are some professional programs available which are very good, but you guessed it they cost money. you can make a start with http://www.midi.com there are thousands of sites dealing with these files.

About a year ago, I was hanging around my friend ryan’s house, and i noticed this strange, decrepid old gibson amp sitting in the corner of his basement, i asked him how the hell it got there (i had never noticed it before, the thing looks like a piece of retro furniture…) he said it had just been collecting dust and said to just take it if i wanted to fix it up. As far as I can tell (and i don’t know too much about amp wiring) it needs power tubes, a few preamp tubes, a speaker, a fuse, the power cord isn’t even grounded, and i’m betting i should go ahead and replace whatever components inside it. If anyone has any info on this interesting piece of equipment, by all means, tell me! I really need to find out what kind of power tubes it takes!

practice, practice, practice. after a while it comes to you, there is another way, you can damp the top string or the top 2 strings with your thumb, the thumb on the hand holding down the chord. stick with it.

A buddy of mine has a VHT that he paid almost $3,000 for and he said the Marshalls are warmer. : I finally have decided to make the investment to a top notch rack rig. I can’t afford to make any costly mistakes (again). Any advice would be appreciated. I’m also considering a Mesa Triaxis. Anyone out there have one? : Thanks : dd Hi Dave. Hopefully you’ll get some more opinions in the next little while. My Dad (Strat Man) really loves this site, but doesn’t want to speak first always, or too much. My friends play Marshall. Most of them, and we listeners find the sound pretty dirty and its tough to find a clean mode. I’m okay with Peavey, no problems. One of my Dad’s buddies has a Marshall amp and a Mesa Boogie rack power amp/pre-amp. Seems like the Mesa is in the too good to be true category. Everybody around here likes it cuz it can be clean, blazing and all things – it sounds excellent. Give them all a try if you can. Possible to rent some? Just wondering what kinds of 2 12" cabinets (and speakers) people would recommend for a rack with a Marshall JMP1 and a Peavey 50/50 pwr. amp. I’ve been told that Celestion classic 30’s would be ideal. I want a great rock, blues and clean sound. (Don’t we all.) Thanks. dd

Dave, you are spot on with the vintage 30’s, they have a great rock sound the best all rounder out there, i would also recomend the JCM900 lead 1936 2×12 cab, it is of course marshall and very solid, you should get a good second hand cab with the speakers for £200.

low end guitars, knocked together with ply at best and hardboard at worse, made in the far east where ex ball bearing factory workers are employed making knecks and bodies (hence the outstanding workmanship). on the minus side they look, sound, feel, play like a wet blanket. they have slightly more sex appeal than that guy out of ‘deliverance’ i beleive his line was ‘squeal like a pig boy!’ in short they arent very good. but please dont take my word for it buy one on the internet (they only cost about $50 new) and give it a go.
-
November 1, 2004 at 2:20 am #89827AnonymousGuest
Low to mid range guitars, bodies made of alder, necks of maple. SG copies all mahogany. The les paul copies are set-necks, a hell of a lot better than Epiphones. The factory is Huasheng, and they’ve made guitars since the ’80’s. I don’t know if they ever made ball bearings. I wouldn’t take "Director"’s word too seriously, since he doesn’t even know what woods they use for the instruments and he can barely spell.

: I want to buy zoom rfx1000 or 2000 can someone tell me is it good to make hank marvin echoes with? We have used various Zoom effects, among others, but I’d refer to possibly dozens of other users’ reviews under guitar effects on http://www.harmonycentral.com. They could refer to terms like tape echo or digital delay, but I don’t know about Hank Marvin. You might have to analyze & extrapolate from any potentially useful info. I also think http://www.moultonlabs.com could turn up something interesting. Strat Man Dwight – Rockitscience Advanced Guitar Technology (& Sound) Labs

The RFX 2000 has a multi-tap capability which the RFX 1000 does not have. A multi-tap delay is considered essential by those seeking the Hank Marvin sound.

My 7 year old son has become obsessed with wanting to learn the electric guitar (his teenage cousins play quite well and after watching ‘School of Rock’ enough said). Can anybody advise the best way of ‘giving it a go’ without over spending. I have been told that cheap guitars can put a youngster off playing, since they are harder to play. Basically what size, how much, will I find them second hand ?, etc. Advice appreciated. Greg

if he loves school of rock then you need to get him an SG, the Epiphone models are very good and need’nt be very expensive, the setup of these guitars are very good, the sound is good as well, if i were you i wouldnt spend too much on an amp, get a max of 10watt tranistor, Marshall do some very good amps around this range, and of course you get the marshall badge on it too. so go for a Epihone SG should get one for around £150-$300, and the amp will be around $120, i think they are called the marshall MG range. this setup will last him years. Good luck

I just helped a youngster buy an Epiphone SG and Marshall 15 watt amp for all the same reasons. The other choice on the market is the mini-Squier from Fender dealers at $199 in Canada. They seem to be compatible with a beginning child’s needs, and are easy to set up & play well. I don’t recommend the full-size equivalent, or Strat pack yet. However your suggestion is excellent – the SG is light, very comfortable and has a nice short scale. I have a daughter turning 7 and she is unable to handle anything full-size. For that reason I also like the "mini". Hope that all have a happy start & continue to play! Strat Man Dwight (Canada)

Follow up: I’ve done what you’re doing so many different ways, that there is not room enough here. First however, the easiest way is to buy a mini-humbucker that fits the existing pickguard slot. Wiring instructions included, or available on the net. Second, a stacked humbucker, similar to the above. But, if you really wish to use your full-size humbucker, please consider at least buying a new pickguard which will accomodate it. Saves all the cutting and looks "factory". Wiring, if it has only 2 leads, will be the same. Briefly, the full-size humbucker can not be mounted at the slant of the existing single coil, because it would require that you remove wood from the body, exactly where the body needs strength due to the attachment of the bridge with it’s 6 screws. So actually, the humbucker should be mounted straight across, if it is full-sized. Strat Man Dwight

That is why the majority of humbuckers are mounted at a right angle to the strings. Ideally, the vibration of each string should occur right over the pole. A pickup designed for the bridge, accordingly works best on Fat Strats. Good luck buddy with the original Squier! Andrew, Rockitsciencelabs Advanced Guitar Tech

Special paints, delecatly, paint it with an airbrush and your going to have to do more than one coat, be careful with the clearcoating, you need to apply each layer of paint with an extremely thin layer, do about 2 or three, enough to fade the wood and give the paint a tone but not color it completely, clear coating is just the same. : I bought a Les Paul guitar kit and I was wondering how would I go about giving it a sunburst type color? The top is a flame maple and I want to show the grain in it but how do I do that?

Hi, I noticed in the archives from a month ago that somebody is looking for Black Diamond Strings. Well, I sent a suggestion, put it didn’t get posted … now I can’t even find the question. Sorry. So, to make this quick, the answer is bigcitystring.com. I have a set of black-coated, Black Diamond strings on one of my Strats which has a black colour scheme. Do they ever turn heads! Never mind the looks, the sound is amazing. They were a gift, but I will be buying more in the future, along with my other favourites. Just trying to help … please don’t ask me what else I use. There’s just too many good strings and good people using ALL KINDS out there! All the best from Canada’s Strat Man Dwight

I was just curious about a guitar that I picked up. It is custom made, walnut body, curly maple neck, ebony fret boards with abalone design inlayed, alinico 5 humbucker pickups, Schaller bridge, Schaller tailpiece w/ fine tuners, gotoh tuning machines, double action truss rod GHS boomer strings. What do you think the going price is for something like this?

Reply. It is really hard to put a value on non-brand guitars, although some are very fine. You would need to find a buyer who appreciates all its finer points. And it does sound very good. If it plays well, you’re blessed with a fine instrument. Strat Man Dwight

I am into playing guitar fingerstyle. I was wondering if there are certain acoustic guitars more suited to fingerstyle than others? I am thinking in terms of the width of the neck and distance between each string? I realize that classical style guitars have the greatest width (1-3/4?) but what about acoustic guiatars? Do any makes and models offer a wider neck than the standard 1-11/16 that would offer more distance between the strings also? Thanks, TG
