Trying to get a similar slash tone. Bought the GV-2. I don’t know what is going on, I can’t get anything i really like. Have volume, treble middle and bass, also gain and Drive volume. the GV-2 has gain, bass, treble, deep, middle and volume. Anyone know of any good settings to give me a slash tone? I know its a strech from a Marshall JCM rig. But have nothing else to go on.

sometimes you have to admit that tone is in the fingers, ok so you need an overdriven valve amp, and a solid body humbucking guitar, maybe a wah too, but there is nothing myserious about his tone, the guy can set up on any rig with any old les paul and still sound like slash, 90% of what he plays is in the fingers and 10% wizardry. try treble at 8 bass at 7 and mid all the way off, gain on 9.

Hi, I’m looking for an Ibanez Musician to buy. I have found one and the guy sent me some pictures on it. I have however problem in identifying which model it is. It looks just like an ordinary MC150 with the mic switch on upper part of the guitar. What puzzles me is that it has an tremolo bridge. I have never seen any pictures of an Musician with a tremolo. Does anyone have any idea of what model it could be? Thanks, Magnus

I’m really confused about modes. I understand the modes starting in Cmaj. No#’s or b’s. Ionian starts with C, Dorian with D Phrygian with E etc.but when it comes to other scales theres where the confustion starts. Ex: I’m Starting in Dmaj 2#’s f&c. Is that Dmaj considered the Ionian mode and do all the following mode just use the # and b of the Dmaj. Now the next mode is Dorian which would be an E note (which as a major has 4 #’s). Do I use the E as a Major or like I asked, do I still continue to use only the Dmaj # and b??? Help. Very confusing. Thank you any one who can help.

The only confusion seems to be what key to call each mode. I think there needs to be a clearer convention on this. (notes:) e f# g a b c# d e is the Dorian Mode taken from a Dmajor "mother key", I would think most musos would know what that means, but the question remains what key are we in? Well it’s some kind of E, and since the third note is one and a half tones from the first it is some kind of E minor . Anything with the third note at that distance from the first is minor, and anything with the third note two full tones from the first is major. So I think the clearest name for the key of the above scale is: E minor ( Dorian Mode) or if you really want to spell it out: E minor ( Dorian Mode-from D major) We generally learn our modes in C and then work them out in other keys. Risking labouring the point, A mode formed by starting on the second note of a major scale will always be Dorian. A mode formed by starting on the third note of a major scale will always be Phrygian. etc The trick with modes is making the new key note sound like "home". There is usually a little sequence or a temporary change to the scale to point to the new "home". Using the above Dorian example, lines finishing with (chords) Dm C Dm will make the Dm chord sound like the piece could finish there. The key note of a piece will always make it sound finished. ( which doesn’t mean you MUST finish on the key note) In E Phrygian (which by the way is minor) based on C major, we have (notes) e f g a b c d e The chords available are the same chords available to C major ; that is: Em F G Am Bdim C Dm but finishing on Em can sound indefinite. In flamenco etc., E major , which is not strictly in the mode, is substituted for Em especially at the end of lines, to give a bolder finish. So we have 3 major chords in a row; G F E ( sounds Flamencoesque already ) We would use C major pattern ( no #’s) for lead runs except when the E major chord crops up, in which case we might finish a line on a g# note ( E major includes g#, Em includes g ) One more example: Lets say we want the Mixolydian mode in E . That mode starts on the 5th note of a major pattern, so counting back, we know that A must be the "mother" key. A has c# f# and g#, so we get: e f# g# a b c# d e (The only difference from E major is the position of the 7th note. In E major we would have a d#) This mode has a bluesy sound because it includes E7 (rather than Emaj7) as a chord available on the "home" note. It would not really include a B7, which has a d# note in it, but to get a convincing feeling of E being "home" you would often play B7 (rather than Bmaj7) before E. When a blues harmonica player picks up an A harp to play in E, they are playing in the Mixolydian mode. So modes are moods, and the feel of each one is more important than its name. Practicing against a low drone note on the new "home" can help.

Hey, I’ve been playing guitar for just over two years now, but I still haven’t learned many scales. I play all styles – rock, jazz, funk, metal etc… and I’m familiar with most of the chording stuff. Knowing the chording works fine for my rhythm guitaring, but I want to dig deeper into the world of soloing and really learn how to play guitar. The only scale I know well is the pentatonic scale, which works well for typical blues/rock soloing. What are some other good scales to learn? Fingering patterns, tabulature, names of the scales, and/or note-names would be really helpful! Thanks

If you plot out the key of C over the whole fretboard, ( in other words mark all the places you can find the notes of C major a b c d e f g a b ) you will end up with a useful map that you can explore. This pattern can be split up into boxes which each cover a range of less than 6 frets and which each include a consecutive sequence of notes. Each of these boxes is a C major scale pattern. (a pattern is just an array of notes that you can treat as you like, a scale is a consecutive sequence of notes starting and finishing on the key note.) Once you know these boxes, you can easily convert them to other keys, just like sliding a bar chord. So in D they will all be 2 frets higher. So with consistent work for a few months you can know the whole neck in all major keys. I think this is a great investment. You will end up with favorite boxes and favorite bits of some others. A pentatonic scale just leaves out the 4th and 7th notes of a major scale. Another cool thing to do is to see what patterns fit around each chord, so you might look at an A minor bar chord on the 5th fret and find all the notes from C major that are near it. Within the full diagram described above, you can look for familiar chord shapes and licks, and extend your knowledge that way. There’s lots more but I think this whole neck approach is very useful.

You need to practice a new idea slower than you would like to get it mastered then speed it up. Always play with time. Say a metronome or drum machine. Don’t rely on your foot for time. In the intermediate stages, it’s important to learn songs and mimic your favorite players. How about copying the vocal melodies on the guitar. Great for phrasing and ear training. Learn to read music. This will help you to learn to count time, thus helping you communicate your ideas to the rhythm section of the band. They know how to count time. The guitarist is the illiterate one. This is due to playing patterns and reading tabliture. If you will not read on a regular basis and want to skin the cat when you’re playing, you should at least learn how to count time, and get into a bit of music theory. Guitarists like Eddie Van Halen and Eric Johnson claim they can’t read. But they can see the noted on the neck. They understand time and they have great grasp on theory. In a nutshell, don’t just learn scales and play them straight through. It tends to sound mechanical and unmusical. Learn where the scales came from and what the limits of them over various chords Try this…. a,c,d,e,g, this is your A minor pentatonic notes. Draw the entire guitar neck on paper and insert the notes named. Have it in front of you as you work your ideas. This will help you visulize new ideas as well as seeing the NOTES on the neck and not just patterns. Phrasing is a big part of it as well. You should think about phrase imitation, rhythmic imitation, and melodic imitation with your melodies and solos. A couple tips: try B minor and E minor pentatonic over an A minor chord. (more of a Dorian sound.) Try B minor pentatonic over a C Major 7th chord. (more of a Lydian sound.) All the best, Rick Olack (G.A.T.) <guitarists against tab> LOL for more tips while i have time, feel free to email me at [email protected]

Theoretically they delay the signal by a continuously varying amount which is less than the period of the wave, then mix that back with the original signal. In practice they make your sound go swish swish. The old Korg Mr.Multi pedal used to allow you to shift the phase by a set amount and just leave it there. I liked that effect more. If two pairs of people are swinging skipping ropes at the same frequency and amplitude, but one is up when the other is down, they are 180 degrees out of phase. If one is up when the other is half way down, they are 90 degrees out of phase. If one gets in and out of phase by catching up and then falling behind periodically, this is a model of what happens in a phase shifter.

buy a indie they do rip offs of both makes but there far better quality and much less expensive. my one costs £539 but is equal to the £900 les paul. They also do fenders.

My son is 14 and has been playibg for 2 years. I started him on a Fender Squire Strat to see how much he would really play. Once I knew that he was serious I bought him a Gibson Faded SG. Resonably priced and he loves it. Am on the hunt for a Les Paul standard or custom for a year or two down the road. Go to a guitar store and play what looks good to you. Stay with a high quality guitar or you will get frustrated. Good luck.

To keep it easy and considering your age, I would say play the guitar closest to what your heroes play. Listen to your favourite music, and find out what is being used. Always trust your own reaction to the sounds you hear.

If it were a choice between the two, I’d definitely go for the Les Paul. As Lee said, the Gibson is definitely more versatile compared to a standard Tele. The Tele CAN do heavy stuff. For example, Tom Morello uses a Tele in almost all of his drop D tuned songs, but I believe he’s modded it quite a bit so that he gets a very different sound from the standard tele. However, with the humbucking pickups, tone knobs, and three-way switch on the Gibson, it’s way more versatile for sure. May I suggest, unless you’re 100% set on those guitars, that you look at a Schecter? I own a C1, and I think it has better quality and better value than either of those guitars. They’re overpriced, for what they offer, and the Schecter matches them in construction quality, sound quality, and reliability. Schecter’s also got the same lifetime warranty as Gibson (I dunno what fender’s warranty is). I don’t want to keep rambling, but they’re definitely good. Check out their website, and definitely go and play one if you can find a dealer. happy hunting! cheers

Sorry, but putting a humbucker in a tele bridge position removes all twang. The tele bridge pickup is what the twang comes from.

It’s true the ‘moded’ tele can be very versatile, i have a Tele with 3 pickups, Seymore duncan hotrails on the bridge, then single coil in the mid, and the standard chrome PU on the neck, Status Quo use Tele’s, and i suppose they could be called heavy rock, but i cant think of anyone else, and a good sugestion on the schecter range, they are as you say good value and quality.

2 totaly different guitars, nobody ever played heavy rock (apart from Jimmy Page on the first Led Zep record) on a standard telecaster, they make great blues, country, but forget heavier stuff. On the other hand the Les Paul does it all (maybe not country), but it all depends on your developing style, what kind of music do you prefer?? as i would say to everyone, go along to your music shop and play them, you will soon make up your mind, and make sure you play a few different types of Tele, they do loads of dirfferent models, they all have their own sounds and feel.

is it solid body?? and 21 frets?? if so i think its the 325 model, it should also have a solid chrome tailpeice, i think this is very similar to the John Lennon model of the mid sixties, you should have a 5th ‘blender’ knob that mixes betweeen the pickups. dont ask me whats its worth, i know a new one would cost £1100 + so an original 64-65 model would be a lot more.

Here’s what happened Amber, you almost have to be an insider to really know. Yes, Kurt did some drawings and sketchings of guitar bodies to improve on what he thought was the unsatisfactory (or uncomfortable for him?) feel of the Mustang and the Jaguar. He preferred the Jag but wanted something lighter. He thoroughly hated the Mustang. He saw in his mind, a combination of the 2 guitars. He took a large picture of each, and cut them straight down the middle with a pair of scissors. He grafted the halves that he liked, together – Mustang on top, Jag on the bottom. Then he started sketching. He took the idea to Fender, it was the cut up photos that impressed the company, and the new Jagstang was all drawn up, ready for production in 1996. Kurt wanted an even shorter scale than either of the previous guitars, with a thinner neck. Also, he had to have one single coil pickup and one humbucker. He was given a few prototypes, but not production models (pre-1997). For a first guitar, it seems you would appreciate something like that. Try out the Fender Cyclone, short scale deluxe series. Costs more than a Squier. Good luck Amber …….. been there!

Kurt liked the Mustang actually, (go to kurtsequipment.com for more) he just hated the bridge, so he replaced it with the tune-o-matic.The Fender Mustang was actually his favourite guitar and he used it in the Teen Spirit video etc. The Jaguar was his second favourite guitar which he used in the Nevermind period. As for the Jagstang Kurt used it as a recording guitar and played it a few times on the In Utero tour, the one he used was basically a better version of the one you see today in stores. It had a Fender Texas special in the neck and a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge position.

I am going to by a Gibson soon but I don’t know whether I’m going to get a SG standard or a Les Paul studio with gold hardware! they are both around he same price on this site that I’m using (the studio cost’s 1188 euro and the SG is 1175euro!). I like both of them alot but the point about the sg is it’s so thin and light with to cut away’s and it’s in heritage cherry. What I like about the Les Paul is it’s a god damn Les Paul and cost a fortune in Ireland! and I love it’s tone. So I’m pretty much screwed so email me or send a discussion please and help a Irish lad out CHEERS FB.

It’s nice if a guitar looks good and is thin and light etc. but its main purpose is sound. You seem to prefer the sound of the Les Paul studio. "If you need somebody to trust, trust yourself"…Bob Dylan

If you buy a Les Paul Studio you will always be wondering about the Les Paul Standard, and to be honest there isnt a lot between the standard and the studio, but, buy a SG Standard and it will be the best purchase of your life, you will NEVER be disapointed with the SG, tonal range betwen pickup selections and tone pot sweeps is astonishing, ive been playing live for a good few years, have played and owned guitars for 28 years, i have a few in the collection at the minute, and the guitar i always take out with me is my SG Standard, it just does the buisness. Go for the SG.

yes it is normal, the grunge pedal has extreme gain on it, if you want to sit close to your amp then turn down the ‘grunge’ ‘face’ and ‘butt’ levels til it stops howling, also take some of the top end tone off the amp, or simply stand back or turn down the volume.

What exactly is your question? If your wanting to know if this is a good price for a SG2000 in very good to excellent condition, then I say yes. I used to have one similar to this one. They are great guitars.

Hey, I’ve been looking to upgrade my guitar for a while now and I’ve narrowed it down to either a LP Standard or LP Classic. Originally I liked the Classic better ( I play heavy metal, blues, etc.) but wasn’t too happy with the distortion sound with the gain rolled back and with my EQ pedal turned off. I was trying to find that old marshall roar (AC/DC, Aerosmith..) but the open coil 490T and 500T (If i remember correctly) sounded too fuzzy and over the top. WIth the gain up, volume up, and EQ on it sounded great tho. The standard got that old marshall sound, and i think it could get that heavy metal sound too. BAsically i just wanted everyone’s opinion and or suggestions or comments. Thanks a lot.

I have a standard, my friend has a classic, they do have different sounds, the classic has a 60’s tapered neck, and ceramic pickups, i would say it is a heavier sounding guitar, the pickups give great cut but i find they dont have the sweeping tonal range of the stock standard alnico pickups of the standard, my standard has a more favourable chunkier neck, better for blues but still a great rocker too, tone is in the ear of the beholder, everyone will have their own opinions on this.

In reading Dwight’s responses to others questions, it is obvious that he knows more about these subjects than most of you teeny-bopper, bubble-gum punk players out there. You know who you are: when a question asks, "what guitar or amp should I buy if I have only $300 to spend?" And you answer, "Buy a Les Paul or a Marshall or Mesa stack". It is pretty clear that you know next to nothing, you just regurgitate what you think is cool because Blink 182 uses that particular gear. Get some experience and some gear knowledge and then maybe you can contribute something useful. And by the way, whenever you use unnecessary language…..you don’t sound cool, you don’t impress anybody, all you do is prove how limited your vocabulary is and that you can’t come up with actual words that have actual meanings to get your point across….SAD. I know that I am not the only one on this forum that feels this way. If you can’t treat people with some respect, please, find another disscussion board. We promise you won’t be missed.

It has the appearance of a Les Paul Standard. Help appreciated Details on this guitar can be quite specific, since you have a serial number. It’s a 1990, but a what? All Epiphone Les Pauls have the Les Paul Signature logo on them, by the tuners, it’s not something that can be removed. This model, whatever it is will be listed in Gibson’s Nashville Registry. Call 1-800-4GIBSON, and patiently await customer service. However they can’t tell you where it was made. I guess the F means made by Farida, now situated in China, makers of Samick, Epiphone, Washburn, Yamaha and literally hundreds of other clones. Strat Man Dwight

yes, it has that very heavy fuzz distortion, a lot like song 2 by blur, although i think Graham Coxton used a Pro-Cat turbo rat for that one, or maybe an MXR ? if you want a used one look for a DOD FX69 its the same pedal, digitech and dod are the same company, you will see it on ebay as the DOD.

      • #111967

        Guest

you start down the bridge end, poke the fat E string through the back of the body (or tailpeice depending on the type of guitar you have) they go up and over the saddles, pull the string along the neck to the tuner head, push the string though the hole or slot on the head and turn the tuner so that the string wraps around the tuner 3 times, cut off the excess, do the same to the other strings slightly increasing the amount of turns on the thinner strings as you go. If you mean fix strings as in, ‘ive broken my E string and want to mend it’ you cant, you are wasting your time and ive just wasted 10 mins of my life.

the strings on my squier strat guitar broke, and little bits of the strings feel under the bridge. I took the bridge off and took out the parts of string. Ok, heres the problem. When I was doing it, these big fat springs fell out from under the pickupsin the guitar. My freind says that they hold down the tremolo, but I dont know how to put them back in! Help!!!!!!!

First.. on the back of your guitar , there must be something.. like a plate…. remove it.. then you just try to place the springs in there…. on end holds the tremolo… the other on the back of the guitar… when you remove the plate you will know what I mean..;) Slaeyer PS: Sry, for my bad English.. 😉

I play acoustic/electric guitar and treat it as an instrument in its own right rather than trying to get a mic’ed acoustic sound. I’m hoping someone has heard of a multi effects unit with two inputs for separately effecting, then mixing, mixing piezo and magnetic components within the unit.

Hey there, hope you get the answer you’re looking for. I like the the Korg Toneworks. It has 2 inputs per channel. But that is not the answer to your question. Somebody help! My son knows the answer, he has a sound laboratory, and an education that I’ve paid for, with connections that took 40 years for me to make. He’s a pro, he gets paid, I get nothing, I’m retired but been there. I try to help but been called a dumb ass, and he gets called gay. He doesn’t put up with that. I just take the hits like a Abram’s tank and I’m still rollin’ strong. He doesn’t have to take any insult. Sorry, I said that on your post. The thing you want is a Fishman Blender – one of their models, check them out. It’s higher end, but you don’t have to pay more than $199. He won’t tell me which one – the best one I think. I got him into this mess. If I’m wrong, we’re gay again. Does that make sense? Good luck, hope somebody will put you STRAIGHT on to what is right for you. Strat man Dwight

are you sure on that model? ive never heard of it, but ive never seen a tanglewood over £400 and never seen one below £150, so i guess the range is low to mid, they do make some nice guitars and some pups as well, if you want a good accoustic guitar (dont know if the aviator is accoustic) then i would recomend Crafter, you can get a great accoustic from £150 – £300.

Boy, Oh boy. You only need one amplifier backstage, and then you can tell the Mixer-man to mix your guitar signal a little bit higher in your stage monitors. The multi stack is only a visual effect. The Rich Rock musicans probaly own a couple of stacks, and put them up on stage to get a powerful & potent look. So use your money to rent some pretty girl dancing girls (with big "silly"-con tits, and tight asses) instead. But anyway, if you better like the stacks and want to use them active (I dont think the rich stack-owners even have them turned on !), well you have many ways to do the job. Some of my old Boss pedals, have B-output or stereo, you can use to split up you signal,ex. Boss digital Dimension (DC-3) & the Digital delay (DD-2). If you have access to a public libery, you may find a Acticle by "Craig Anderton" in "GUITAR PLAYER MAGASIN" /april 1985 page 96.Multiple Effects Systems Accesories, which have a couple of solutions. One is to build a little "Buffer" OP-amp, so you can split your guitar signal out to many Amplifiers. You can’t just split up your cable directly, because the guitar output-impedance is to big. If you wnat more, You can email me and I will scan in the article for you and give you a simple electric diagram for a buffer amp. If you a little into electronic you can build yourself or you can get a technican to build it. Maybe I can build for you a sent it, if we have time.

I own a Vantage Guitar, Model # VA-35C. I purchased it new in 1985 and it is still in excellent condition. I’ve not been able to find any information about this model. If anyone can offer any, it would be appreciated.

I also own a Vantage Guitar, Model unknown. I purchased it at a pawn shop in the 80’s. It is quite attractive, in excellent condition and seems to be of above average quality.I’ve not been able to find any information about it. It does have a tag on the back that says Music City Music Store, 3030 Nolensville Road, Nashville Tn 37211, Phone 832-7450. If anyone can offer any info about this guitar, it would be appreciated.

I’m looking at adding a Gibson RD Artist to my collection when I saw your great looking bass on Guitarsite.com. I was hoping you could answer the following before I place my bid: 1. What is the serial of the guitar? 2. What is the scale? 3. Are all components original? 4. Can you describe and send pics of any nicks or dings? 5. Is the neck straight and any fret wear or buzz? 6. Are all electronics working? 7. Does it include the OHSC? 8. What’s your asking price?thanks Michael : Can anybody help, : i have a black rd artist in near mint condition, im thinking of selling it, does anybody have any idea of how much its worth? : lots of fuzz : mr precision

I own a 1981 Victory Bass. Quite nice to play on, although it is really heavy. It’s not too bad though if you have a nice wide strap. As far as sound goes it has a really mellow sound to it, well suited for classic rock or even jazz. The sustain is excellent on this bass. You can find a lot more info here http://www.harmony-central.com/Bass/Data4/Gibson/Victory-Bass-Standard-01.html Eric

However I am no longer happy with the amount of parts that P-R-S are supposed to be bringing in from China, especially their outsourced elaborate inlays, and now possibly pickups, then they reportedly fit everything so nicely into a supremeley "finished in the USA" body, and there you have, a very nice guitar. Still World Class, as long as China is part of the World. My favorite patriotic pick is the all-American Gibson Les Paul Classic 60. Constructed & finished to absolute perfection, with slim taper neck, the usual short scale, great feel & balance and tone which doesn’t get any better (unless you have a boutique pickup preference). And gosh, that one’s in a dead heat with my now-extinct SG 62 re-issue, which has the same features, in a lighter package, with creamy-but-kickass 57 Classic humbuckers. Not to be confused with the lesser 61 model now available – less density and poorly finished. But to really play, I build my own Strats. Not part of this topic I would suspect. Strat man Dwight

: Hey all, I have an American Telecaster Deluxe and I was wondering if there was a way to change the bridge and add dual humbuckers to the bridge instead of the singal pickup. Is this feasible? If so, where can I go to find out just how to do it? Until now, there have been like 99 percent odds against your doing this mod. But there is just 1 way that I know of lately (others feel free to correct this?) and it will involve at least 2 steps. First you must get the bridge that fits your Tele and holds a humbucker. It would have had to be custom made before, but now there’s the humbucker bridge and the twangbanger – that’s 2 choices at http://www.warmoth.com. Then you have to get your body routed for the humbucker, assuming you don’t want one of Warmoth’s new custom made bodies? So, you get your bridge first, make the template and go to a router. Other sites of interest are Keith’s at http://www.area51guitars.com and Jay’s (contact Jay Monterose) at http://www.vintique.com. They could give you insights or hands-on assistance, and maybe others here at guitarsite will have additional advice. Andrew/Dwight Listmayer

Before today, I was going to settle down, not make waves, blend in and not bother the moderator. But now it’s different. The moderator will see that I answered the above gentlemen’s postings at least 30 – 40 times, spending nearly 2 hours editing my words till I got through. IT WAS A PERSONAL CHALLENGE cuz why should anybody take this krap, being blocked over and over again? I wanted to find the words that were not allowed. They were very ordinary, innocent words, and they were NECESSARY in order to respond. If some of you on the forum find the words that went in to my responses to Olaf Melcher and Jack Smith a little odd or ill-chosen, that is because I was removing the good words and substituting poorer ones. But I got through, take note Mr. Moderator and kindly apologize to all forum members affected by this problem. It has never been so inconvenient or ridiculous! Strat Man Dwight

Hi everybody, I am a Tele-lover but not very happy with the sound in the mid-position, despite having installed a 4-way-switch for putting the two single coils in parallel connection. Even then, it sound still like the Strat sound, when two PUF’s are connected together. I am now considering simply to add a middle single coil PUF (very Strat-like). Did anybody among you guys already made this experience ? Thanks for your advice. Olaf

: Hi everybody, Olaf, I wonder what is is that you don’t like about your 2 pickup combinations? I have double pickup Teles with both the Fender 4 sound, and the http://www.deaf-eddie.net 5 sound. If anything, the 5th sound is a little out of the ordinary. However, YES I have a Nashville Tele with 3 pickups like a Strat. Mine has 7 sounds, because if you do it like a 5 way Strat, you miss the neck and bridge in parallel which is the Tele sound you don’t like, PLUS I get all 3 pickups at the same time. Maybe you like the Q tones – the hum cancelling, funky half-way combinations at Strat positions 2 and 4? You will need your middle pickup to be reverse wound/reverse polarity for that. And it will end up sounding like a non-tremolo Strat. I try to identify with people who have different ideas. You are valid in your own opinion. But if this were my scenario, before I go into the centre of a solid Tele, I would try one last thing. I really would try the sound of a S-T-A-C-K-E-D HUMBUCKER at the neck position of the Tele. It will be a little fuller and will sustain more on it’s own, it will add those characteristics to the 2 different combinations of both pickups from your 4 -way, and you can tap it on a p/p switch if you want to hear it as a bright, glistening, supercharged single-coil. S-t-a-c-k-s do that. They sound incredible as single coil when they are tapped. That too will have an effect on 3/4 of your single coil tones. Something to think about. Strat Man Dwight

I have found a very good easy-to-use solder for electrical work on guitars & amplifiers. It is a resin core 60/40 (lead & silver) composition. I like it because it melts at fairly low temperatures, and is less likely to produce damage to pots or capacitors while working near sensitive components. It’s from Radio Sha… Strat man Dwight

: I have a student canora C 40 guitar for sale and don’t know what I should ask for it. Any ideas .Thanks. I see you’re in Canada. My son works on guitars, and I have overseen his craft, so to speak. Student guitars with various brand names generally go for $100 used. That’s with everything working, playable, and may include a cardboard case. If new strings, fretboard oil, fret polish and a setup is required, you should be prepared to spend about $25 extra, and reflect that, or a little more in the price you ask. A guitar that plays well and is easy on the hands practically sells itself. Thus it should not go for less than $100 – $125. The buyer should consider themselves priveleged to have a guitar that works for this price and it’s not hard to get people interested. The new ones come from big warehouse stores that are selling beginner guitars at this time of year, from overseas for $100 plus tax. Usually, they don’t play at all and would require a more detailed setup, if possible, since the "new" materials can be of sub standard quality, not intended for our climate, and are difficult to work with. Then they last 3 months to a year. We sometimes call them imitation guitars, because they look like a guitar. There are also new guitars at a certain Radioparts store for $50 – $ 100 which can not even hold their tune. You might add this to the promotion of your guitar, if it is a good one. All the best. I have an 1974 guild D35 sreial #99759. This has an arched back!!!! The sticker inside states very clearly "D35 with arched back". I have been told by several people that Guild didnt make a D35 with arched back in 74 yet, I have one that I bought used several years ago. Can you tell me if this is a rare guitar. If it is , being 30 yrs old —would it be valuable monetarily? Any help will be greatly appreciated. RESPECTFULLY

The latest edition of the Guild History book is available at http://www.elderly.com. It might be a good investment for you since your guitar seems so unusual, in a potentially good way. Hi, I hope someone can help. I have just got a Kay guitar for my brother to learn on, but I am not sure if it is a steel or nylon strung guitar. It has all the characteristics of a nylon (tuners, neck joining body at the 12th fret) but it has a ornate scratch plate! It has old steel strings on it at the moment and plays fine. I do not want to put new steel strings on it incase I damage the instrument in any way….Should I put nylons on to be safe? Any info or leads would be great. The model number is K155 or KI55. Thankyou…. Allan McKechnie (uk).

£150 isnt a lot, do you want electric or accoustic? electric wise for £150 you can get a guitar and amp setup, cheap guitar cheap amp, probably ok to learn on, you can get guitar amp packages, have a look in Argos, PMT in romford, southend, west london, and birmingham do very good deals. If you want accoustic then go for a Crafter, £150 will get you a very good mid range model, they are fantastic guitars for the money, good luck.

I bought a cutaway steel string Carlo Robelli and I just love it. It, to my amazement sounded so much better than the $250.00 + guitars I tried out. I always do research on almost everything. I didn’t even know about this make. I tried out a Washburn which was nice but then the salesman lead me over to the Robelli’s and as soon as I strummed the first chord, I was sold. The price was awesome as well. Well under $130.00 I tip my hat to Robelli and his guitars. Great Going!!!

i recently bought a secind hand univox guitar (1970’s) and it had this really nice seymour duncan humbucker in the bridge pickup slot. I love the tone that comes out of it, but in my playing i tend to use the front pickup more (i hate the twang of the bridge setting). Can i simply get my guitar repairer to switch my two pickups around? Will a bridge seymour duncan work just as well at the front?

there is no reason why it shouldnt, you could take it off create a cavity halfway along the neck and place it there if you wanted to, Fender did a very suscessful telecaster custom 72′ it had a humbucker on the neck and a single coil on the bridge, Keith richards used to play one, although ive never seen him playing one with the humbucker selected, still, give it a go.

I’m getting an Ibanez 1527CB 7 string this week. I was looking at a couple of different pickups for it. Can anyone advise on some good replacement pickups for a 7 string? I’m pretty much going for a pretty heavy sound (hence the 7th string:), so I figured the bridge would need a good amount of gain to it. But, one thing I love about my JS is the articulation you get even at high gain settings. So, in the neck position, I wanted to put something that would be chunky for leads, but still have good articulation. Any ideas? Thnx.

There is no such thing as an Ibanez 7 string. Only Fender Telecasters have 7 strings on em you siily boi.IF your fake "IBANEZ 7 STRING" does exist(which it doesnt) i recomend the new EMG A-81. the A stands for the seymour duncan Alnico 2 pro and im sure you know what an 81 is. SD and EMG teamed up due to Steve Vai(who invented the fender telecaster) using the SD invader an EMG 81.i think its only available in canada and i got a A-81 for $79 and put it in my JHX Explorer. i hope i helped you!!

Hey. Well dont know very much about Raven guitars. All i know is i have one, i am presently getting it repaired. What i know is that there are a fairly low end Guitar company that were manufactured in Japan. They are decent guitars and a lot had them. The one i have is from the mid 70’s and is a copy of a gibson hummingbird. It is a faitly simple acoustic, nice look and a very nice neck and fret board. Good sound out of it, and for a fairly cheap guitar it is decent Guitar. Be aware after many years the neck may not be the stongest.

: I would like to buy a starcaster from the late 70’s. Please e-mail me if you have one to sell. Thank you. For many years I wanted a Starcaster and none were available. I bought 2 Guild Starfires instead, single then double cutaways. Later, a friend bought a Starcaster, did not like it at all, and offered to sell for a very good price. I looked and tried, not a very impressive guitar. Poor construction, action & tone compared to the Guilds. It kind of burst my bubble. I thought they looked so good before, but they weren’t what I expected from Fender. Just my experience – I’m happy the way things worked out. By all means, good luck and may you get what you really want. Strat man Dwight

Thanks guys for the information. I will definitely check it out. Would anybody know where I could obtain (purchase?) detailed design plans for a vintage Leslie 147 cabinet? I know a wood master craftsman who will build me a cabinet out of some really nice figured hardwood – thinking about using curly cherry and/or curly maple. I have looked all over and so far have found nothing. The only other way I can think of would be to buy a vintage cabinet and work from that. Thanks for your help and info. unwind the string off the tuner on the headstock, then pull the string through the tailpeice taking care not to scratch your guitar paintwork as it goes through. to win the new one on poke it through the tailpeice then pull it up to the tuner, if its a ‘thin’ E string i would wind it around the tuner at least 6 times, but if its a E ‘Fat’ bass string then 2 or 3 times is enough.

: hey i need to know when the electric guitar was invented!!!! im doing a report on when the electric guitar was invented its not very specific so are you saying that the electric guitar’s were basically invented around the 1920’s?

      • #91296

        Guest

:Depends on what kind of electric gitar you’re talking about. Electric hawaiian guitars were around in the late 20’s and pickups for hollow body jazz guitars were available in the early 30’s. Gibson’s P-90 pickup came out in 1937. In 1945, Les Paul planted a 4×4 piece of pine inside a hollow body guitar and screwed pickups pickups to the solid part of the body, thus inventing the semi-hollow electric guitar, a common design still being used today. But in 1950, Leo Fender introduced his version of the electric guitar called the Broadcaster (or Telecaster) using a solid plank of wood for the body. Fender made the first solid body electric guitar but he did not invent te electric guitar. Les Pauls "Log" guitar was an achievement but he did not invent the electric guitar. So to answer your question, THE electric guitar was invented in the 1920’s.

I hope someone has the pickups or the answer you want – maybe they are yet to come. I use an EMG 81 humbucker in my Custom Strat and it gives me what I want – a good, slightly dirty sounding bridge with a fair amount of output. Not sure, but I think I had it before Zakk Wylde, so it has nothing to do with hype or any artist. My dad, Dwight uses the broader, less aggressive, but hi-output 85. Both are exactly what EMG says they are, certainly not more, or mystical magic. Just reliable and they deliver consistently. We have not yet used any 7 string models or the 707. But I’ll bet that EMG describes them honestly, and maybe there are user reviews at harmonycentral. My purpose in writing is to remind you, EMG pickups (including what you want) sound best with EMG pots, capacitors and other hardware, of course their special jack is essential. The pickups don’t work properly if you just use them including the battery etc. without the rest of the current regulating, tone shaping electronics. Andrew/Dwight Listmayer The EMG forum is a top notch place for interaction 7 info, though I’m not plugging their product, site or anything. I just use ’em and think they’re okay, like they say.

I have the same problem…my serial number is 501*** and is not listed on their site. I bought the guitar over in japan when I was in the military about 10 years ago. Unfortunately I can’t find anything else about this guitar. What is also strange is that on the head it has "grover Jackson" instead of just "jackson". Anyway, if you figure anything out try to post it on here so I could maybe find out something about mine as well.

Odds are it’s a Japanese-manufactured Jackson, so the serial number will not be available on Jackson USA’s website. My understanding is if the headstock has Jackson Professional or just Jackson painted in cream (instead of a mother of pearl inlay), it is a Japanese model. Just another way to tell aside from serial #. I don’t believe any of the USA models had "Grover Jackson," but I could be mistaken. My brother has #1034659, which is some sort sort of Soloist/Fusion variant and I can all but guarantee that it is definitely no American model, just by considering the quality of materials used. It’s a bargain bin guitar, I’m afraid. This is not to say there aren’t other higher quality Japanese editions. However, in general you will find some lower quality features on the Japanese models, as this line was introduced as the lowwer cost alternative.

Not much anyone can do to pinpoint the year of a Jackson – I’ve been waiting to see if anyone here knew how, based on serial numbers. Perhaps you could remove the neck with due caution, just to see if there is any ink date stamp on either the neck or the body pocket? Alternately, some CTS pots, if so equipped, can be dated by serial number. Strat Man Dwight

I want to know the quality of the made in mexico guitars are? How are the pickups compared to the americans? I was told by the salesperson that the neck and frets were setup better? But he was working on commission so i am a bit suspicious

I agree with Dwight – a make/model/sn would be nice – also a few more specs. I’ve had to do minor fret levelling and setup on several of these to get them to a "cherry" playability status, but they _do_ get there. The pickup packages vary; again, the TexMex have some good tone. Sure, they’re made in Mexico, but that ain’t necessarily a bad thing. If you end up buying it, factor in that you should have it dressed and set up by a repairman – NOT the mega-chainstore you bought it from. Face it… Fender’s a production shop and don’t have the time (especially for a MIM Strat) to really do a sweet fret dressing and setup on every one that goes out the door. for what it’s worth…

In the event that others or myself are able to comment on this issue, I for one would like to know the pn (part number) or model name of the particular guitar. MIM Stratocasters have different levels of quality and precision in parts among various models. But in any case, pickups, except for Tex-Mex are not usually worth keeping, especially those with ceramic magnet bars, in place of alnico rods. The TM’s come in the Jimmy Vaughan model. I also like certain features of the Classic series, but not all. This is not a full response on my part. Anyone else? … have a go. Strat man Dwight

: Any info on CBS Masterworks guitar. who makes it, quality and value, etc What a good pick! CBS Masterworks was made by Fender, before they officially were known to have overseas product. Acoustics only. Named after the CBS broadcasting co. takeover of Fender, directly after Leo sold his company in 1965. I think they were late 60’s early 70’s models, same quality roughly as Epiphone/Yamaha. There were very few, and those that exist have usually stood up well, and are rare. Value at the most in my humble opinion $300 – $400 depending on where you are – Canada or US? Strat Man Dwight

Does anyone know of software that would allow me to create digrams of the fretboard easily? I want to do both chords and scales. I want to be able to show just your typical 3 or 4 frets as well as the entire fretboard.

Hi all, First of all, congratulations for this great forum I just discovered. It’s a well of six-stringed wisdom ! Next, my questions : Do FP-01 and FP-02 differ from one another only in their connections (2 mono jacks for FP01 and 1 stereo for FP02,) cosmetics considerations apart ? Is there more in a FP-0x than a pot and, of course, jacks and wires ? (for the pot : 230kOhm, log, searched the archives 😉 but please correct me if i’m wrong of if something better can be achieved with another pot type) Wondering more precisely about input protections… If it’s nothing more that a pot (then it’s an expensive one… 🙂 do I have something to gain in enhancing it ? I explain : I read of a Volume Pedal Retrofit supposed to clean the signal/enhance the action eveness of a volume pedal, however it has the flaw of being active electronics, which means another alim 🙁 So if it’s (mostly) useless for an expression pedal, i’ll gladly let that extra part away ! Thanks for your patience, G.

I just bought a brand new Epiphone Les Paul and a 25 watt Fender amp. For some reason when the guitar is plugged in, it buzzez a little. When i touch the string or any other metal thing on the guitar or amp, the buzzing stops. Anybody know whats wrong or how to fix it?

LeGlou is right, and it also makes sense in diagnosing such a problem to try another guitar with the same amp, and try another amp with your guitar, in the same environment. See if there’s any difference, besides possible electromagnetic interference, including dimmer switches. Of course, you can take both your guitar & amp to a different environment, to test. Some buzz will have to be tolerated if you are within a few feet of the amp and are facing it. Does it happen when you move back? Hopefully it’s not as bad on the clean channel, and at volumes under "4" in situations where you don’t have to be loud. Strat Man Dwight

I have this problem too when halogen lamps are on around me : my guitar acts as an antenna for the 50Hz waves the lamps generate. So my advice would be to check for any such interfering electric devices in your surroundings, and turn them off ! I just hope you aren’t near some high-voltage lines, that wouldn’t help either. Greetings, G.

There are too many variables in Kay guitars to evaluate without knowing every possible detail, especially whether equipped with Kelvinator headstock, or semi-Kelvinator headstock, or Barney Kessel artist model. Those are features that are desirable. I recommend http://www.vintageguitarpro.com. Regards, Strat man Dwight

I am looking for a certain Ibanez guitar but I am not sure of the model, I belive it is a Roadstar series. A friend of mine had one in the mid to late 80’s and he doesn’t remember the info either. Anyway, it has a classic body style, HSS pickups, Floyd Rose trem, 1 volume and 1 tone knob w/ a push/pull coil splitter for the humbucker, and 3 (I think) mini toggle switches near the tone knob. But, the finish is what most impressed me, I’ve never seen it anywhere else or on any other Ibanez, it is a very dark blue, almost black with a subtle light blue fade outlining the body. Can anyone help identify this guitar?

Hi Phil, still hope someone can help. I’ve loved Ibanez, and I’ve known a little, for a long time. I never saw or heard of any Roadstar or Roadstar II like you describe. Though diff models went to diff countries, the Roadstars were all Strat clones. What did you mean by classic body style? Does that refer to Ibanez’s own style, or classic "Fender"? So, was it like a Jackson shape? If it’s in that design category, you are most likely talking about one of the 540’s, like a R540LTD or a variation of it. Except they were mostly hum-single-hum. But they had a full load of toggles, push/pulls & stuff, with that blueburst colour. Maybe you could give a few more details, it would help, though as of know I haven’t seen anything exactly like it on the web; what info there is may often be in foreign languages on that one. Also, the site http://www.ibanezcollectors.com could eventually work for you, but I couldn’t find a match without understanding all the features – there just wasn’t a clear picture of it in my mind, as there is in yours. I also looked at the Ed Roman collection on-line. Good luck. Strat Man Dwight & member of http://www.jemsite.com/forum.

Thanks for the info. By "classic body style", I mean Strat style but the lines were much smoother that the strat. The edges were nice and rounded, more than the strat. As far as color, it really wasn’t a burst. It was more like a fading line, maybe 1 1/2" wide outlining the body. But anyway, I’ll check those other sites. Thanks.

im an Elixir fan too, those strings last forever, D’Adario’s are good too, but i hate restringing guitars and always go for the lazy option, Elixir, they retail over here for about £10 a set ($18) but we went to a guitar show/exhibtion 2 years back and they had an Elixir stand there that were giving out sets for free, the queue went around the block!! i rejoined several times and managed to blag 5 sets!! those were the days. Oh and i still have 2 sets left, thats how long they last.

Love the question. You’ll get alot of input from the guys here. Happy to say I’ve had the same Yamaha acoustic since 1970 or 72. It sounds great with light strings. My son plays using 11 – 52’s, or 12 – 53. A full size guitar with a strong neck can take up to 13 – 56 but these would raise the action slightly. D’Addarios are economical, bright and long lasting. That’s mainly what I buy and supply to my family. Also, Yamaha’s own strings are good, but not as sparkly and crisp as D’Addarios. For a treat, I buy Martin Marquis once in a while. They sound just a bit softer or sweeter, but they tarnish & fade quickly, even though I do my best to maintain. Elixir Polyweb coated are the best, bar none, in my opinion. I buy them for myself, but cannot give them to my son, because he & his friends break strings constantly, and I end up paying. Elixirs sound fantastic and last longer than others I have seen. One last thing, and a seperate paragraph to highlight this. If you happen to like bluegrass, it’s John Pearse or nuthin’. Zounds, they’re loud, like an electric! Because they have a phosphor/bronze coating. They cut right right through competing banjos and mandolins, and usually Martin guitars. My experience & opinion. All are welcome here. Best of luck & sounds! Strat Man Dwight

Does anyone have any custom presets for the RP7. Sometimes if you spend enough time, you can duplicate the guitar sound of any song, and it would be great if these presets from different people could all be posted at a website. It would be a great resource.Allot of guys still have some of the older multi FX boxes, like the RP7. The newer ones have some added features, but overall the RP7 is great and can achieve tons of sounds.

It depends on his style. If he’s into fingerpicking, he may like it. My style would be to play it as a guitar, not in the flat steel guitar position. I would not want the higher action, the E or other tuning or to use a slide. It would be nice as a different sounding fingerpicking classic style guitar. Daisy

Daisy Yes, fingerpicking and Dobro go hand in hand, strumming isn’t really an option. But if a player wants to play with a slide, it can be accomplished in the regular guitar-held position, without necessarily raising the action, which is done by means of a special nut for Dobros. So, if the player can fingerpick and wishes to try slide, the Dobro is good for that, adding the sound of the resonator cone. Strat Man Dwight

: Any info on seven string dobros would be appreciated : (makes, models, prices and tunings)=R FRAY= I have no info. on the above re: makes, models, prices but could point you towards the name Paul Beard, to expand your search. Mr. Beard who seemed to specialize in 8 string, thought that the 7 string was a compromise between the 8 and the 6, with the 6 being either easiest or perhaps preferable? Re: tuning, he is one of the few sources. He has said you can place a G on top of standard G tuning, or a low D at the bottom of standard G tuning. Also, tune 4th string to E for another, which is a G6. Don Ross has given only one known example. It is AEACDGE. I wouldn’t know how to play one, just have a little info. Hope it leads you to more links & possibilities. Strat man, Guitar historian Dwight

I own a Peavey 410 combo amp that runs at 50 watts. Now, I’m thinking about replacing the stock speakers with 10" celestions. What I need to know is if the 50 watt label on the amp means that it runs 50 watts to each speaker, or if it splits it to each speaker? There is a label on the back of my amp that says it draws in 200 watts, so I assumed that it was 50 watts per speaker. However, a worker at guitar center told me otherwise. Anywho, I’m just curious to know. Thanks

50 watts would be the total output, so you would have 25 watts to each speaker, celestion do a very good 10" speaker, but you should also check out Jensen. but if it were me, i would go for a Marshall JCM900 1936 2×12 cab fitted with 1×12" greenback and a vintage 30, and sit your amp on top of it, well in fact i did, and thats what i currently run my THD BIValve 30 through. dont forget the impedence values on those speakers too.

Its a red one, the body looks similar to a fender strat, but smaller with very round curves. the pick-gard is white, it has 3 pickups , the middle one is crooked. Its made in england, the serial number consists of 5 dgits. it’s got a tremolo arm ed on the plate it is attached to it says: Watkins hi-lo tremolo. Does anybod know something about this guitar? I just checked one of my books which sort of cross references artists with their guitars, but it’s not perfect. I’ve got pics of Mark’s Red Strat from Sultans of Swing, a Gibson ES-175 Hollow Body, and his Custom Made red Schecter "Tele" for the Nelson Mandela concert. But in addition to his many Pensa-Suhrs, I still feel there’s a guitar missing. It was SuperStrat-like, natural honey coloured, and I can’t find it anywhere? Strat man Dwight

Hi, I just checked "Guitar Styles", a songbook series dedicated to M. Knopfler, including some info on his gear. Perhaps you are talking about a Schecter ‘Strat’, Sunburst (1980) he used on "Tunnel of Love and "Going Home". He got also, that you have not quoted, a Gibson Les Paul Sunburst (’86), a Gibson "Super 400" CES (’53, old one…) with a natural finish, a reddish Gretch "Super Chet" and of course his steel guitar, a National "Duolian" Style O. Well.. i’ve lent the second volume of the series for now, so I can’t tell you more. I hope i could be of some service. Would you wish some photos, I can of course scan and mail you that. Greetings, G.

I didn’t believe it at first but then I bought one, not to power other pedals (but for the Tuner aspect of it), and sure enough, it can power 8 pedals. Although you have to purchase the correct power supply (Musicians Friend $20), it is worth it to not have to keep buying batteries.

Yes, there is a pwer supply cable with 6 or 8 connecters on it which distributes the power to additional pedals (about $12, Musicians Friend). They power almost any pedal. I have lots of pedals that aren’t Boss and I have had no problems at all.

Bass and guitar/vocals looking for drummer to write, record and play shows. We have some songs as well as a ton of ideas for new ones. We have a studio on capitol hill where we rehearse and record, and we already have a nice 4 piece drum kit waiting for you. All tube amps and good gear. We are musicians who know how to tune and intone our instruments, and we love to play challenging music. In the past, reviews of our music compared us to bands like Nirvana, Ramones, Rush, Live, The Cult, Jane’s Addiction. We’re interested in persuing a more original and artistic direction with our music. Lately I have been listening to The Vines, Muse, Franz Ferdinand, The Killers, Jet, A Perfect Circle. We are looking for a drummer who is tight, has good meter, hard-hitting when necessary and able to dynamically adapt to the needs and structure of the song. If you have creative input as far as the sound goes, even better. We have kit for you to play, but you can use your own if you prefer. In the past, we have always gotten a great reception, reviews, and lots of gigs and buzz and I want to maintain that tradition. In addition to being musically talented, ideally you will be reliable and committed and interested in helping to promote the band as well. This is a ground floor opportunity to get in at the start of something cool, you can even help come up with a name. At the same time, we have a back library of 30+ songs if we wanted to hit the ground running and be playing shows immediately. Send me an email, or give me a call to come pick up a CD or schedule an audition. Thanks, Josh 206-324-2476 [email protected]

I have played acoutstic for years, and would like this guitar to have nice tone, a softer action, but room to grow so to speak…suggestions?? Price range from 250-550 is acceptable. As I reading the reply from Lee (glad to hear from Lee) I somehow posted a blank message. Sorry. My first point, good advice there to start with. Second point, for your level of interest which I believe to be most sincere with a high level of commitment, I reserve a special website for people in the North American market. I’m a little frustrated, I couldn’t find the url. link re: all guitars in the Godin family, then I went to http://www.godinguitars.com and the entire web is identical, word for word, same brand names and pictures etc. I suggest you click on all half-dozen options (the pictures) and read it all. What a treat for the senses, if you a craving info on guitars, including acoustic electric guitars that you can actually buy, and live with, in your price range. I personally recommend the Norman, or if you want a variety of cosmetic styles, then Seagull. For a solid back – simon Patrick. At least we know where and how these fine guitars are made: Canada. A reliable confidant of mine has just returned from China where he visited a no-name facility with Yamaha guitars under construction. Perhaps the name Yamaha wasn’t technically added to the guitars yet, maybe they were "incomplete" but it was pretty sad. He looked at the quality and said that others were far superior. And I have always liked and have Yamaha as well. Have really enjoyed my Seagulls & Normans and recommend them now without hesitation. Hope this helps. Strat Man Dwight

by accoustic electric i think you mean an accoustic guitar with a pickup inside? one of the best makes for this type of instrument is Takamine, which will be at the top end of your budget, Yamaha do an APX4 which is very good too, also at the top end of your budget, if it were me i would buy a used one, there are lots of very nice guitars of this type out there, in England we have a range of guitars by a company called Crafter, but i dont think you have a supplier in the states, these are fantastic value for money guitars. if you want a true idea of the worthiness of a particular model, then check out : http://www.harmony-central.com/User_Reviews/ if you see a nice looking guitar for sale in your price range, check it out on this web site, it will give you a good guide.

Yeah I agree with you there Lee. I have a second hand Takamine, very nice too. Price was around £650. Worth every penny. I also have a Yamaha APX 3. Similar to the APX 4 only without the gloss finish which I didn’t really like anyway. The sound quality seemed faultless on either model plugged or unplugged.

Sorry I don’t have time to look for pictures or check DVD’s at the moment. Gotta love his style and copy it, with the bow exactly right. If there’s been something wrong for you, you didn’t say there was, but consider the bow. You probably have the horsehair which seems right instead of synthetic which probably didn’t exist when Jimmy was at it. But, big but, I wonder if he used a German or English style bow? You can tell by the frog where the hair is anchored. I would use a German style frog which is higher and would increase the angle of attacl on the strings, because the readius of the strings on a Les Paul is so flat, unlike the cello, so we need all the help we can get. Andrew, Jonathan Wilson here. I am somewhat of an expert on this topic (bowing guitars) and have done this for many years. Here is a link to my FAQ page where I tackle this topic. http://bowedguitar.tripod.com/faq.html Have a look at http://www.bowedguitar.com also, you might find it interesting. I am also producing a DVD on the topic but it may not be available until 2005. Cheers! J

ok so who can tell me what mw strat is worth? i bought it in 1978(its a 72 left handed model)I paid £275 then, the only mod done to it was done before i bought it and is a dimarzio paf pro humbucker on the bridge. also it is one of the first 3 bolt neck strats, any ideas please? thanks a lot

if it were in total original condition, and right handed, i would expect to see it for sale for around £1000 – £1500, shouldnt think left handed would effect its value much, maybe it will take a little longer to sell it. But with all these ‘older’ guitars originality is the paramount, the original case would also be included in the valuation above.

: are ther any les pauls apart from heritage that are better than gibson? : also for extra brownie points did Mr.LPaul never actually design it? or is it just rumours? Where’s Lee? Where’s almost-but-not-quite Tokai? I’m sure they’ll be on later. I suspect one of us heremust be working for Heritage? So, in my opinion, there is no Les Paul (copy) including Heritage, better than Gibson. Not that Heritage isn’t good – they essentially are the old Gibson employees. Now just 2 things. I base my assertion on the fact that Gibson uses the finest materials available on the planet Earth to make their Les Paul. From every piece of wood, to strand of wire and nut, bolt & screw. It’s all there, all the best that can be found, until we find another planet, or Aliens bring us their guitars. 2nd & last thing, okay I have some concerns about Gibson’s quality maybe slipping in the last 5 years. I’m basing this on examples of their craftsmanship passing through my hands and not feeling as right or playing & sounding as good as earlier models to about 1998. That’s just me – just a rather subjective feeling; I am not a precise measuring instrument. But if it’s true, the Gibson get off your axe and show us what you can do. And I forgot to mention, Les actually helped design the guitar. The story goes he gave input. Then he endorsed it while they gave it his name and their money. Thanks Les. Now … Lee??? … and all you other guys? Strat Man Dwight – owner of many Les Pauls, by far mostly Gibson!

i think you said it all Dwight, im glade to see a fellow ‘Gibson Crusader’ on the forum, i think the the craftsmenship of gibsons hasnt changed much but the marketing has, they seem to have a lot of cheaper models and a lot of very expensive models, i think the ‘faded’ line was a mistake, they looked very bargain basement and a little substandard, the design of the les paul changed in 2002 (not sure on the exact date) they changed the angle of the headstock, and also some binding was changed which may have effected the feel of the instrument, the historic and custom shop range of Les Pauls are truely outstanding, some of the best instruments ive played. ive not played every les paul clone, but ive not played one as good as a Gibson, the weight of a Les Paul can get a bit tiresome after you have been on stage for a hour or so, its not the easiest guitar to play high up on the neck, no rolling nut or locking trem, but when you play the first note of a solo and you hear that sustain, you are in tone heaven, Gibson and Marshall, can anyone think of a better match than that?

im in 2 minds over those guitars, they do sound good, quite authentic, they have a nice setup, not too expensive, ive only tried the electic guitar variaxe and found it OK, but i have 2 issues with them, they dont look very good do they? i mean why cant they sell you a pickup and then a floorboard to house the software, that way i could play a les paul and flip the pickup on and choose an onboard 12 string rickenbacker for a particular song, and then flip it off to get back to my ‘real’ les paul, also the feel of the instrument, the neck feels chunky and flat, when i play a les paul i want it to be a 60’s tapered neck, and i want the guitar to feel weighty around my neck, if i flip to a telecaster i want that huge chunky 50’s neck, i would imagine they are very good for recording, but i wouldnt fancy gigging with one. But Dwight you should go and try one out, its well worth a trip to your guitar store its the 2nd best thing you can do in a hour.

I’ve recently installed a nut string lock on my 335, but it doesn’t lock all the strings most notably the G string, so the dam’ thing slips when i’m using the whammy bar. Have I installed it back to front maybe? There were no specific installation instructions included so it was a 50/50 choice which way to go as there were no indications on the piece as to front or back. Any ideas or comments (apart from why’d ya do it mate?)would be most welcome Reply, my son & I discussed your situation with the locking nut yesterday, but we both felt that somebody else, perhaps a forum regular or a welcome new person would like to address it. My son is what I jokingly refer to as a "Floyd Rose Expert". Whatever the case, he gets to work on troublesome Floyd Rose bridge & nut parts. We have a variety of guitars & items here that we can look at and manipulate in our hands, to imagine the problem and the solution. We also referred to books and catalogues of the aftermarket pieces such as yours, to picture the trouble. I know your style of guitar as well. But anybody else with a Floyd Rose or other locking nut might have answered, we thought. Plus WE COULD BE WRONG and as they say, stick our feet in it. Having said all that, we believe you’re right. Could it be that simple? Did you feel what was amiss already. Installed backwards? Generally, the nut is canted, so that it has a high side and a low side. Installed, the high side "hits" the strings first, and is facing the bridge. The low side is on the headstock/tuner side. Check if this applies to you. Otherwise, switch the 3 clamps around to different positions and see if that makes any difference. The 5th & 6th string are seldom problematic, the 3rd or 4th are occasionally doing what your G string is doing, and the 1st and 2nd often behave this way. When the nut is installed correctly and there is still a problem, we flip or change the clamp at the site of the problem. If not, and in the cases where the nut is worn or has incorrect string height, change the nut again. We are interested in your results. Sorry for taking so long. I feel bad if this is "hogging the forum". Strat Man Dwight

is it better to have amplifiers going through a PA system or just direct.

a lot depends on the type of sound you want to achieve, if you want overdriven then you need to turn your amp up to get the most from it, i used to have a Vox AC30 with blue alnico speakers which i always used live, the characteristics of that amp completly changed when i had it turned up at half volume (which was very loud) the valves started to realy cook, the speakers would break nicely and if valve overdrive is your thing, then this was heaven, not too good for the stage sound engineer but he will just mix you down, the important point here is to get the right tone out of your amp at front of stage before you even hang a mike in front if it. and i would also never go direct in the desk.

I would agree with you if you are playing in a big venue, the more power being used by the amp is obviously going to give the best sound, but to get the best house mix (which is pretty important for the audience sake), that is why there are ovedrive pedals, to give you the sound of a pushed amp without the loud volume. I do not agree that the sound engineer should ever lower the house guitar level because you may want to push your amp a little more on stage. If you want to saturate the tubes more, place the amp off stage or in a nearby room and turn it up as loud as you want and then mike it from there.

I think that once your miked up amp goes through a desk, and the meddling sound engineer pokes about with it, you always seem to end up with a ‘processed stadium sound’ this is also very true of a miked up drum sound, you lose the natural sound of the drum kit and end up with an overtight snare and a clicky bass drum, a lot of sound engineers are control freaks, they want to push their sound on you, thats why a lot of stadium live albums by super groups all sound the same, if you want to hear a great live record, get ‘get yer ya ya’s out’ by the stones, released in 1969 it predates mixing desk processing meddlers and gives it to you staright, buzzing snares (who remembers that sound?) feedback from guitars, and crowd noise, you can actualy hear people in the crowd shouting requests between songs, now theres a novelty! its a breath of fresh air in a world of processed porridge. most people in the auidience dont give a toss what your guitar sounds like, so long as it sounds ok who cares? well me for one, whats the point in investing a lot of money in a classic 30 watt combo if you cant get the best out of it? ive never seen Brian May turn his amps down to please the sound engineer. and it is larger venuse im talking about, in smaller venues i wouldnt mike up to the desk, just point the amp forward and turn it up to 5+

defenetly use an amp in any situations.besides the one like phil said when you have an awsome preamp(on tubes) or something like that.but even if you had it use the amp, you’ll get far better tone through an amp , especially if you have a quality one.

I would definitely mike the amp no matter what the setting may be. You can run your stage levels a little lower and push the House mix a little more if it is a smaller venue, it affords an all around better mix that way. If by "direct" you mean bypassing an amp all together and going from your guitar into a mixing desk. NEVER DO THIS! Unless you have a high quality pre-amp. It just sounds bad and you get a very thin tone. In any case, just mike the amp if is is feasible. You’ll be happier that way.

if you’re playing in a small hall & you’re using say a 50-60 watt amp, then no it’s not necessary, you’ll get better tone control & the band will sound better overall & certainly not if you’re using a 100 watt amp. however if you’re playing in a large venue or outdoors & have got someone mixing for you, then yep, mike it. the other advantage to miking your amps & kit at a large show is that you can get a good soundboard recording of the show, well, that’s only if you have a good mixer man out front!!

all depends on the type of song you to record, but lets say its a straight rock song i would record 2 guitars mixed left and right on the desk playing the same part, this will give you a nice fat sound, thats for the main guitar rythym part, then add another for the little riffs and solos, thats the way i would do it.

I seem to have difficulty not hitting more than one string on the fret. I am new to the guitar. I have started to build up some calousis on my fingers a bit, but still seem to hit the wrong strings. I have tried several different finger and wrist positions, but can’t seem to get rid of this problem. I don’t have large hands, so I must be doing something wrong?? Even when I try to stay as far away from another string as I can, it still seems to end up hitting as I move around slightly. Is there a good trick to learn? Can I get a guitar where the strings are spaced futher apart at the nut?? Any tips would be great..I’m loving this new hobby and this is the only frustrating part for me. Am I pressing down too hard? Should I losen the strings a bit until I have more control?? I don’t know. Please help me if you can. Thanks, Steve

I learned decades ago you get what you pay for. Cheap is okay, if you have absolutely no option but to buy something that may be expendable, or throw-away. I have only owned one independent/external fuzz effect in my entire 33 years of playing. It is the Dallas-Arbiter Fuzz Face, same as Jimi used. And it was used when I bought it. Right now it would be worth a $100 CANADIAN, and worth every penny. It’s adjustable, looks & sounds great. Very durable, and collectoble too. Strat man Dwight

: hey do ne of u guys know the best and cheapest fuzz box to get to get as close to jimis sound but be also able to change the sound Sorry, I can’t say what’s cheapest.

Does anyone know the model# for a Kay acoustic guitar that looks like as follows… all black head with no logo, double sided pickguard with vines/flower design, on the bcak of the guitar it has blond strip that goes down the length of the body. I’m guessing the year around late 60’s early 70’s. If anyone can help that would be great. Thanks, Ryan.

I have a Fender Strat, sunburst with maple neck, made in Japan, bought second hand about eight years ago. Unusual thing is that it has a locking trem with Fender on the trem unit – looks as though it was manufactured that way rather than added later. Anyone know anything about it?

That’s a perfectly normal variation of a factory original MIJ (made in Japan) Strat with locking tremolo. With the name Fender on the bridge, I’d be more sure about it’s consistency with other guitars if it also said "licensed by Floyd Rose". It was made by Fuji Gen Gakki, an excellent factory which built guitars for Fender to Fender’s specs. They are highly prized. Suggest you get the book from music suppliers, or fender.com about the the Stratocaster – The Japan Years. Loads of info and fun, well it’s always fun as I see it. Strat Man Dwight

i want to run my guitar in stereo on stage using 2 amps, but im not sure on the best way to go about it with what i have. i play a wolfgang in to a vox wah > keeley compressor > keeley modified boss ds-1 distortion > boss acoustic simulator > peavey 5150 head and 4-12 cab. im not sure what i should use for a second amp. and then i have a memory man deluxe delay pedal in the effects loop, although i will be adding a fulltone fat boost, a fuzz face and a reverb pedal shortly but im not sure where i should incorporate these ( i also have a boss delay pedal and a chorus(stereo) pedal with which i may replace the memory man. also im not sure how to get the best sound out of the ds-1 its supposed to have a good tone but im finding that i can get the distortion on the 5150 head to sound clearer and fuller than the ds-1 .but i still want to find a way to use this pedal. im thinking im not using the right set up for it since it has such a good rep (particularly the keeley mod) why else would satriani and vai use it on stage? anyone got any ideas? i would appreciate any other tips as well. thanks, chad

As you say, you hear some irregulaties through the body of the guitar, unplugged. Check inside the tremolo block to see that the ball ends of the strings are seated properly. Loosen them, and pull up or move back & forth through saddles till they are right. While youre there, make sure that the Eric-Clapton-only maple block is positioned correctly, tightly against the zinc trem block. Finally – I don’t know if you changed your guage of strings recently – see what’s happening at the nut. Are these 2 "bad" strings getting hitched or impinged? Strings larger than 10-46 would require some work there, enlarge or lube nut slots. Last resort, change strings. Strat Man Dwight

: Thank you for letting me know you was a big help. do you know if this guitar has any value? : thanks You’re welcome. I gave more details via the moderator which have not been posted. My eventual reply was brief trying to omit all the words used previously. Frustrated – I did not expect it to go through. Prices in my view might be from $2500 to $5000 USD. Now please, I would get 2 other opinions. Elderly’s in Lansing Michigan keep a computer database on those which they have sold, accessible through their service dept. An issue of Vintage Guitar Magazine has always been a pleasure to own. You might enjoy buying one for yourself, and could find asking prices for your guitar in there, among thousands of others. I once counted over 30,000 guitars for sale, just to find a price on the one I was looking for. Strat Man Dwight

I’m glad to hear about your guitars. By the way is the Silver one Inca silver or after 2001 … Chrome Silver? The Chromies are awesome. My 6 almost 7 year old daughter owns 2 Telecasters, the Blue Flower and the Pink Paisley, also a Custom Stratocaster in Burgundy Mist, which is a metallic pink. My other daughter by the time she was 16 or 17 had a red Jagstang, Sunburst Mustang, Black Cyclone, matching Black Toronado, Black Guild SG style, metallic Purple American Strat, Gold Lonestar Strat and half a dozen acoustics which she has given up completely, until a Martin D-45 comes her way. She has been actively looking for this acoustic for many years, wants a good used one for half of the new price. Her T-shirts said Fender – I would hope so. Just a footnote, the Jag blew all the local boys out of the water. A Texas special neck pickup and bridge pickup you wouldn’t believe unless you recognized it – Tom Delonge’s Seymour Duncan Invader! I like novelties for electric guitars and would try something different. I have no experience with this wood yet, but note that acoustic guitar tone woods ideally come from trees that are 600 – 800 years old (somehow? – visit Godin guitar’s site for example) and are often dried & stockpiled 40 – 50 years (Martin guitars). if its a standard model and all original, no repsprays, and was for sale in the UK, i would expect to see it up for £1000 – £1500, some colours are more collectable than others, the blonde model seems to be a very popular colour.
