I have a Valley Arts Custom Pro Strat style guitar.Made in USA. H/S/S.
I can’t seem to source an owners manual.
I am trying to find out how to adjust the truss rod to correct the neck relief.
I can’t find the truss rod adjusting nut at either end of the neck.
Does anyone know how I can get the owners manual or advise me how to adjust the truss rod.

I am saving to buy and electric acoustic, but should I spend all my money and go broke on another Taylor, or should I look at a takamine or a seagul? What should do you think?

Try out a Seagull, if nothing else. If ou aren’t pleasantly surprised, go with the Takamine. But at least try the Seagull.

my suggestion is if you want to save a shit load of you should just get the Boss acoustic simulator. It will become very usefull as you start to play gigs. Of course it would help to have a good electric like a PRS,gibson, or even a schecter which is starting to become a very good brand. overall the pedal works great it will run you about $60 but its worth it. I play at bars in cali.

Listen its quite simple the guitar to get is a takamine because they have the best electronics around today for the price.trust me ive been playing for 12 years now and through the years i have had taylors, martins, and takamine and a takamine compared to a $2000 taylor I would go with the takamine and if your ever looking to buy an electric go with either a gibson SG or a shecter because they really make a good guitar.

A Seagull would be excellent. My friend’s is top of the line, made by fine crafstmen. It rivals and equals guitars which cost 3 times as much. The Seagull is a real guitar, Takamine’s are pieces of wood used in marketing, and Taylor may be over-valued.

i just copped a g&l tribute and as i always heared about G&L’s, the trem is silky smooth. this one isn’t. its coming off tight and not too silky. is there a way to get it smooth if i loosen the springs? if thats so, how would i keep it flush w/ the body? i want to be able to pull up on the bar as well as depress it. -like a floyd rose. i also wanna know what the felt washer is doing around the bottom of each fulcrum bolt (besides keeping the body safe from it slamming against the body). is there a better material to use? if so where would i get a pair? HELP ME OUT PLEASE? regards, dan h

On "One Long Road" Jon Robert Quinn provides his fans with exactly what they’ve come to expect: crunching riffs, soaring melodies, chord changes and solos from heaven. He deviates little from such past releases as "Solo-Fisticated". "Clouds In The Sky" is a beautiful ballad and is also Jon Robert Quinn’s newest single. There are also elements of dance ("Night Runner") and metal ("Higher"). But his skills shine through the most when he shreds, and very few can do it better. Quite simply, the man is a virtuoso and probably one of the best Instrumental Rock artists of his generation. He shows he can play at the speed of light while fitting all these speedy solos into the context of the song. "One Long Road" continues the legacy of a man who shows that no matter how many guitarists are out there, he’s still going to shine through with his music. How do you put a guitar strap that has one button hole and another bigger hole at the other end onto a guitar w/only one knob at the bottom.

      • #96230

        Guest

some people attach a peice of string/shoelace to the end with the larger hole, then you tie the string around the headstock, alternativly, you could fix another strap ‘knob’ on the guitar and buy a standard type 2 hole strap.

: Anyone with an opinion on these guitars. Heard one and it sounded great. I’m left handed so it would be nice to hear from others about experience with the new one before ordering. Thanks Think twice, and examine these guitars before ordering. Prepare to make some modifications if you see any of the following: small, mini-pots with knurled shafts – although the knobs are metal with set screws, which makes them cockeyed and incompatible. Solution: change to larger, solid shaft pots, or at least get knurled-to-solid bushing adaptors. You didn’t say which model you are considering. I have one of them. Any model with a tone selector toggle switch instead of a rotating tone adjustment just isn’t acceptable. They offer no useable tone. At least one real tone pot is required to give a 6120 useful tone range. With that, they DO sound great.

: Can someone explain the saddles on the guitar to me and also why they sometimes extend to various odd lengths? Intonation. The sadles are used to adjust the intonation. When you tune your instrument it should also be in tune when you play the same string at the 12th fret or the harmonic note on the 12th fret. If the string is sharp or flat when you play a tuned string at the 12th fret you use the saddle to extend or shorten the string length. You should take the guitar to a good repairman if you think your guitar is out of intonation. The worst is usually the 3rd or G string around the twelth fret.

I have a Peavey Bandit 112 (I believe its an older version). Anyways, I’ve been using one of my Boss distortion pedals for distortion. My friend just sent me some sweet settings to get a good sound for punk and ska (I play those two genres most). I put it to the settings and plugged in my Footswitch. I don’t know now how to work the Footswitch from there on. I hit all the various buttons and kept trying it, I get no distortion which I turn it on. HELP ME! Please! Thanks!, Jeff

Is it the boss pedal that causes this? check the batteries and if that doesn’t work take a look at how the wires are soldered on. Make sure to write back if it isn’t those damned batteries, and i’ll try to explain in more detail. tata

Did you tighten down the 6 screws holding the bridge to the body? They should be up 1/8 of an inch. It is a Strat copy. You want your temolo to work downwards at least, if not float.

:when you use the whammy bar you take a hold of it then play while holding it so the notes flow, or are kinda distorted, if you don’t know how it should sound listen to Hendrix: the entire principal behind a whammy bar is to bend the sound

If you don’t normally work on your own guitars you might want to take it to your local guitar store to have it adjusted. It is not hard to adjust, but it is VERY time consuming, especially if you have not done it before. If your guitar is still under the 30 day warranty, you’d better take to the place you bought it. If they don’t fix it pronto, don’t buy from them again, and send a nasty e-mail to Samick. Anyone who sells guitars should set them up before they ever get in your hands. This is becoming rare these days, but it is still done in reputable stores. The warranty is the big deal here. If you don’t care, find someone you know, who has been playing a while (5 to 10 years), and ask them to help you.

Hope this helps. No, sorry, tremolo picking is fast picking of the same note up & down on the same string. It is done by curling the thumb inwards, and using the thumb & index finger to propel the pick, instead of the wrist, as it can not be done with the wrist. You also must choke up a little on the pick. Technically, you can tremolo pick different notes, as long as you fret & pick them on the same string. An ergonomist or physiologist/guitar player would know what I mean. I wonder how many of them are out there?

What do you think about my idea? First go to & read the link address, below, then think about this! I’ll bet that if you made a "golden section spiral cone" & placed a 12" speaker at the exact spot where the spiral = 12", & point it outward, & kept going say (1) "18cps" wave length past the speaker, you would have the best enclosure you could get! NO STANDING WAVE or dead spots in the audio band! What do you think? Let me know if you try it! I wonder if anybody has tried it? [email protected]:-) Keith Read this link, it explains what I’m talking about! http://www.mcs.surrey.ac.uk/Personal/R.Knott/Fibonacci/fibInArt.html#music

I think you should get a les paul, it is by far the sweetest guitar of all time. yeah toni lommi played an SG, but Jimmie Page played a les paul, winner…………….No duh, Jimmie Page LONG LIVE THE GODs OF ROCK!!!!!!!! I’ve got a Fulltone wah, Mutron III, Carl Martin Comp, Boss Sustain/Comp, TC Electronics Chorus, EH Holier Grail reverb, Ernie Ball Volume Pedal, Boss Tremlo, Fender Tuner, Boss DA20 Delay w/Tap, Boss Loop Station, Voodoo Lab Pedal Power, Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive and 2 (two loop)looopers. (4 channels of looper) All the above pedals are being used with a Fender Prosonic tube amp with a mono effects loop. Currently – I have the Fultone wah and the mutron III on loooper channel 1 going into the front of the amp. Looper channel two has the compressors to the sparkle drive then to the front of the amp. Loooper channel 3 has the tremlo going into the amps effects loop and loooper channel 4 has the delay, chorus, Reverb, volume pedal, and loop station all going into the effects loop of the amp. Problem, I’m getting some unwanted distortion when my volume pedal is not fully engaged. I first put it in line with delay/reverb stuff going to the amps loop, then I tried it in front of the amp. No change. It’s an ernie ball, and I like the pedal because it has a tuner out that can be used when the pedal is in silent mode. I may need to find a better sounding volume pedal, but I’m thinking this is a signal/impedence problem since the pedal sounds great fully engaged. Anyone out there have the wisdom to solve this one? I would love to hear any knowledgable opinion on how to configure these pedals for a tube amp/effects loop in general. Remember, some pedals go in the front of the amp while other are being used in the amps effects loop. If you are not familiar with the looopers, they are simple effects loops with true bypass designed to help you limit how many pedals you must put in a single signal path. With the looopers I can group pedals into sub groups allowing me to add a group of pedals to the signal path with one tap of a switch. If I am not using delay/reverb/chorus I can disengage that loop with a simple footswitch. This removes that group of pedals from the signal path completely keeping signal integrity as high as possible with true bypass. HELP ME! Gil

: I have a jackson with active pickups and I get a slight buzz from them. Does anyone know how to silence this? There should be little to no hum with active PU’s. As stated; a cheap-microphonic cable can contribute noise-after the PU. Weak Batteries, Guitar Grounding problems, and fluorescent lighting, Pedal loops, etc. are all major contributers to noise. Try a Conquest or Big Brute cable-through your Guitar and amp at a music store or turn off any fluorescent’s. Output jack is also a common problem! Try another active Guitar through your amp.

: I have a jackson with active pickups and I get a slight buzz from them. Does anyone know how to silence this? You said it in this subject. Active pickups hum. So, yeah, we all get a buzz off them. Nothing really to do but try this, take your axe to the git store and try out a bunch of expensive shielded cables (cords), see which one might reduce the problem, pay your $70 or so, and don’t stand too close to the amp, any other power supply or fluorescent lamps. Also, experiment with guitar & amp settings, like less volume output from guitar, more vol on amp, but you’re pretty stuck with what you got, active pickups hum or go bzzzzzzzzzzzz!

I am trying to sell my Seagull guitar but am unable to figure out the model. It’s blank on the inside of the guitar where it says model but the serial number reads 94-322069 and there’s a number on the back of the arm that reads ASE01A. What model is this?

I have heard that Columbus guitars were made by the same people that made Hondoll guitars, and that they were a Jap copy from approx 35 years ago??? can anyone throw any light on this please? Cheers then.

will the solid plywood body withstand such a project? the colombus is after all one of the only true plywood bodied guitars with a hardboard cap. not recomended for outdoor or water feature use, dont tell Charlie Dimock.

ive got a baldwin exterminator. i havent been able to find anything about them and i have no clue how much its worth. i got it for free out of an old theatre, which was being remodeled. it works, but before i got it, somebody stole the speakers. also, it has shows some signs of use (tears in the fabric etc..). i have 3 questions. how much is it worth? can the speakers be replaced? and how good do they sound? any information would be GREATLY appreciated. thanks. -eric you can email me at [email protected]

I could really use some advice about what type of guitar strap I should buy. I have only been playing for about 6 months and an starting to acquire some accessories for my new acoustic/electric dreadnaught with a cutaway. My current challenge is to find the right strap so I can play comfortably standing up. Oh, and, if possible, if I could get something with a little coolness to it, that wouldn’t hurt. My budget is anywhere in the $15 – $75 range, but I had expected to pay somethere in the middle. What kind of guitar strap do you like? Why? Are there any types you would advise against? Why? I’m curious about material, thickness, width, color, style, anything you can tell me. Thanks.

I personally prefere the nylon-type ones, although they seen a bit rough and somewhat cheap, it gives a nice feeling and lets your shoulder breath =D I have a leather one (medium size, a bit thick) but never use it because it’s thick and uncomfortable. Go to a local music store and try out all the straps until they kick you out = ) Hope this helps.

OR talk to me on MSN ([email protected]). if ANYONE has done this on ANY guitar… i need your input, or anybody’s opinion. thanks.

My names mike and i have an epiphone bully SG, i sanded it down and painted it baby blue. Filled in the neck pickup and replaced the bridge one with a duncan invader. I wired the electronics myself and in my opinion it was super easy. Here is a helpful website i used to find wiring help. Other than wiring it correctly the only thing to worry about is cutting the right size hole for the pickup. Since your guitar has a pickguard, if you mess up you can just get another pickguard! I have no idea what the tremolo you are talking about is but the pickup part should be fairly easy for someone who knows a little about gutiars.

I have almost $1700 to spend on a decent guitar, amp and all the accessories and I want your suggestion on a good guitar to buy. Right now im swaying towards a Les Paul but I have heard these are fairly heavy. I need something which plays all styles fairly well including rock blues and metal which will also hopefully last a long time. Any Ideas?

Yes – For the money, instead of a Les Paul you could buy a Diamond Shector. They are well built and play as nice or better than a Les Paul. The Diamond Schector is built well, but the pickups and electronics are crap. Buy the Diamond Schector and then have the pickups replaced with high end Seymore Duncan pickups and pots. I did this and I am very happy with the results. I also had the nut replaced with a graphite nut. The total cost to me for what is now a very high end Les Paul type guitar was about $850.00 after modifications. I know another pro that has two daimond schectors configure like mine and he loves them. They play like butter.

Les Paul’s a good choice. Not all Les Pauls are alike go play them, play all of them and you can tell a difference. SG is the same thing. G@L is a good Strat choice. Hamer is an alternative to Les Paul, same vibe less expensive. Heritage Guitars are well built, Good used Tom Anderson. Ernie Ball. I would strongly look at a Ernie Ball Music Man Silhouette Special. This is a American made Hum and 2 single coils cover all bases to start. This together with a Mesa Boogie Combo or a Marshall tube amp. I think the Boogie combo because they are solid even a used one is going to be good unless it’s been just trashed. Go play everything in you price range and out until you hear what sounds and feels good to you. The Ernie Ball and a boogie combo should eat up your budget and give you a solid start. If you do not like one or the other they keep their value so you wont get hosed on resale or trade. Good Luck

:hey i feel ya, im kind of in the same fix but ive been playing longer and already have 4 guitars, 1 is a 1965 gibson melody maker and i also have a gibson acoustic, anyway id go with any kind of gibson, yes many les pauls are heavy but not all. and sg’s are pretty awsome too.but any gibson is worth the money, if you get one it will probably outlive you. like i said i have a 1965 gibson melody maker, which i might add is the cheapest model gibson makes, and it still looks and more impotantly sounds awsome so if i was you id get a gibson. But its youre money, waste it on something else if you want.

I myself am most definately a ESP guy though i dont own any actual ESPs myself, i do own 2 ltds though as i have owned 6 in the past but i left them at my uncles shop to use in his recording area and well i havent had the time to go back and get them (2 day drive back to get them) so there they sit. LTDs are amazing a standard M-302 kicks out some jazzy tones clean but busts out standard rock and metal distorted, an EXP (new model) really sounds great, i have 2, ex 50 and ex 351bd and both are amazing, as the 50 has standard equipment installed it sounds really good for all genres and usually runs around 230 us dollars, the otherone though is a metal maniacs dream come true but costing around 664 us dollars another guitar i have that i really love is the epiphone goth series explorer, now all the epi goth series are the same so if you like les pauls they have one, v’s theyve got one, sg, well you get the point. These are amazing guitars and for a great price too, it has standard gibson electronics on it and plays almost anything, besides the fact that its got the coolest paint job, its price for 449 us dollars is well worth the cost, and gives you enough to buy a decent amp, one more id reccomend is the actual gibson faded series, these guitars has the same electronics as their counterparts but are much lighter, ex. the flying v standard is just a HEAVY heavy metal machine if you want it to be, the faded is a LIGHT heavy metal machine, needless to say, the faded les pauls are also lighter than their counterparts, and sound just the same, these guitars are truely amazing and one around here will set you back about 630 us dollars, i extremely reccommend these guitars, and they also carry the gibson name so that makes them worth twice your while. there are a tone more i could describe so if youd like just say so and ill list more. Thanks….Trevor : I have been playing acoustic for a year now and I’m looking at buying an electric guitar. : I have almost $1700 to spend on a decent guitar, amp and all the accessories and I want your suggestion on a good guitar to buy. : Right now im swaying towards a Les Paul but I have heard these are fairly heavy. : I need something which plays all styles fairly well including rock blues and metal which will also hopefully last a long time. : Any Ideas?

Ashley, Playing guitar is a challenge, but if you REALLY want to do it, it is very rewarding. It does require the "P" word : PRACTICE. Here are some tips : 1. Put a set of 8 guage strings on it (have someone you know help you, or pay your local music store $10 to re-string it. $20.00 with the new strings) If it is an acoustic guitar, put 10’s or 11’s on it. 2. If you didn’t get a book with it, pick up a beginning guitar book (level 1), and/or a chord book – these are about $5 to $20. 3. While you watch t.v. pick up the guitar and put each finger (use your finger tips only), on a string and just press them on the strings for 15 to 30 seconds at a time. Just press your fingers on the strings. Then let them rest for 2 to 3 minutes. Do this through one or two t.v. shows, if you can stand it that long. After a while your fingers will hurt, but this is a good thing. After about 1 1/2 to 2 weeks of this your fingers will have calluses and will not hurt as bad. This is a necessary evil for all beginning guitar players. DON’T give up. 3.Once your fingers don’t hurt as much, try fingering some chords from your book(s). Start out simple with E, D, G, A chords. If you know some one who plays, have them help you so your chords ring out clean. 4. This won’t happen overnight. It takes hard work and dedication to play well. If you really want to play, practice for at least 20 to 30 minutes every night. 5. Don’t give up! Tell yourself I want to play guitar and I WILL do it! There is much to learn. Go slowly at first. There aren’t enough girls who play guitar, so show all your friends how cool it is to play guitar. You might teach them one day! Stick with it. You CAN do it. Have fun!

: Playing guitar should be taken seriously and not lightly, learn real songs like some led zeppelin or eric clapton, and whatever you do, do not play crap like simple plan or sum 41 or anything like that because it’s not really playing guitar so much as banging on the strings and looking a retard, good luck and may the gods of rock be with you. I think that everyone who ever took up the guitar felt that way at the beginning. This is not a natural thing for your hand and fingers to be doing. Practice is the only way to get there. As you practice several things will happen, 1. your hand and fingers will become used to being in the proper positions and 2. you will develop caluses on your finger tips that will enable you to get the sound you want without as much effort. Right now your finger tips are like under inflated tires. It’s frustrating now but improves with practice.

: My son just received a DelRey for christmas, from grandparents. I plugged it into the amp and no sound, or if there is any it is very little. My dad said it worked when he bought it. The knobs were loose so I took it apart and WOW what a wiring nightmare. You would not believe the amount of electrical tape used. 1st, is it worth fixing. 2nd, is there anywere to find wiring info for these. : thanks mark

Can anyone help me date a Epiphone Junior? Serial number SJ04044628. Gibson customer rep gives one date and Blue Book Publications Inc gives another. It’s very important that I know the correct date. I am trying to figure out if a signature on it is a forgery. Thanks!!!!

OK. Gibson also said it is a 2004 model made in Korea. Blue Book Publications Inc says it is a 2000 model manufactured at the Samick factory. It has autographs for all three Bee Gees (which look authentic) but Maurice died in Jan. 2003. So… if it is a 2004 model the sigs are fakes. If it is a 2000 model then they could be real.

Iam wanting to sell two of my guitars but I don’t know what to ask for them. One is a 1998 Martin D-1R, and the other is a 1973 Epiphone FT-550. Both are in near mint condition, with the only thing wrong with them being marks on the pick guards. Anyone have any idea what they might be worth?

I have just recently acquired a beat up D-12-20 and I am not sure if it is worth having repaired. To start with and most notably, the pickguard is rolling up away from the body. This is no doubt due to moisture and heat. Besides that the aged yellowing finish is cracked in several places and is also a sort of matte or grainy finish where it used to be glossy. Please if anyone has an inkling of advice or information for me, e-mail me. Thanks.

I had a D 12 20 once. It was a fine 12 string, although I like the Gretsch better, as 12 strings go. Any Martin is worth restoring. Go to the Martin website and look up a Martin repair facility near you. Have them evaluate it.

Unless you absolutely have to sell them locally, you can’t beat ebay. Take them to your local pawn shop and ask what they would give you for each separately. Don’t pawn them! Take that amount they quote you and multiply it by five to 15 times. That is close to what they might sell them for. Take them to your local music store and do the same. The actual value depends on many things. How is the finish? How much were they new? Are they beat up? Do the frets have much wear? Generally speaking, if you take the original price (List Price) of the new item and divide by four, this is a good place to start. If the Epiphone is made in Kalamazoo, Mi, it could be worth some money. Look inside the sound hole; there should be a sicker telling the model and where it was made. If it says Japan, it is less valuable than Kalamazoo. If it says Korea, it’s not worth much. As far as the Martin goes, If it is not mint condition, the divide by four rule would be a starting point.

ok here we go, step one– 1- take the strap and put the hole in the end(if no hole is found, make one) on the pegs in the front and back of your guitar. 2. smack yourself for ever picking up a guitar and not knowing how to put on a strap

      • #95746

        Guest

you’ll need to use a nailgun. once the stap is secure and the guitar is snug against your body, you’ll want to apply duct tape anywhere you have body hair.

the switch will select the different pickups, if its a 3 way (clicks up and down in 3 stages) it will select the bridge pickup only (pickup nearest the rear of the guitar) in the middle position it will select both pickups together, and in the up position it will select the neck (front) pickup only, if you have 3 pickups, then the selection will be different and usualy goes, bridge on its own, bridge and middle, middle on its own, middle and neck, neck on its own, seeing as you only have 2 knobs im guessing you have 2 pickups, the knobs are simply a volumn and tone knobs.

I have two pickups from a 1965 Burns Marvin for sale. Their history goes as follows: Back in 1965 I was touring with my band when one pickup (don’t recall which one)of my Marvin went dead. We phoned at Burns and they immediately sent us three(!) new pickups free of charge. We replaced them all just in case. Ever since the two original good ones have been hiding in some box until they fell in my hands the other day. If there is any interest send me a mail. I can supply pictures. Ingo

Also there are books that have chords and lots of pretty pictures 🙂 There’s also a program you can try downloading, guitar pro 3 or 4, it’s a tabbing program, but provides chord positioning. It can be downloaded from kazaa or googled up. If not, I am able to send it to you by email. Hope this helps.

I have normal to smallish hands, any body got advide/experience : thanks : danny Danny, I am sooooooo glad you asked this question. Since all Martins have the new low profile neck, that’s not a problem for you, and neither is nut width. There is not any real difference in nut width, it’s like splitting hairs. Seems you gotta have that Martin, so I’ll not refer you to Gibson for a shorter scale. You know your own mind and hands, and overall physique, and I believe that’s why you’re stuck on Martin comfort, sound and playability, when it comes to size of body. With your hands as you describe them, I really don’t see nut width as an issue. Length of scale is an issue. You quoted guitar specs correctly, but try the 000-18 and 000-28 with 1 11/16 nut width plus what I think you need: 24.9" scale instead of 25.4". How are you at spreading your fingers with your hand around the neck? In a short-scale, I like the 000-28 with its glossy finish. Tell us what you think. Good luck & comfortable playing!

: : I am pretty new to playing, and now want to buy a decent guitar. I like to strum, but really like to finger pick blues style. I am torn between the martin 000-15, and Martin om-16gt. The 000-15 has a nut width of 1 11/16 and the 0m-16gt has 1 3/4 nut. I have normal to smallish hands, any body got advide/experience : : thanks : : danny : Danny, I am sooooooo glad you asked this question. Since all Martins have the new low profile neck, that’s not a problem for you, and neither is nut width. There is not any real difference in nut width, it’s like splitting hairs. : Seems you gotta have that Martin, so I’ll not refer you to Gibson for a shorter scale. You know your own mind and hands, and overall physique, and I believe that’s why you’re stuck on Martin comfort, sound and playability, when it comes to size of body. : With your hands as you describe them, I really don’t see nut width as an issue. Length of scale is an issue. You quoted guitar specs correctly, but try the 000-18 and 000-28 with 1 11/16 nut width plus what I think you need: 24.9" scale instead of 25.4". How are you at spreading your fingers with your hand around the neck? : In a short-scale, I like the 000-28 with its glossy finish. Tell us what you think. Good luck & comfortable playing!

Dear Gretchen, thank you so much for this informed answer. I am stuck on the 000 shape rather than being stuck on a Martin. You suggestion of a shorter scale sounds like a good idea, do you know if the Gibsons that you mentioned come in 000 style ? once again, thanks for the advice danny : : : I am pretty new to playing, and now want to buy a decent guitar. What are we doing here Christmas Eve? The Gibson short scale I was thinking of is the venerable J-45 with a bell shaped body. But the lower bout is way bigger than a Martin triple 0, and it’s a stretch getting your right arm all the way over, if that’s your strummer. Gibson stopped making their LG series (smaller) parlour guitars in the early 60’s. So the Martin body together with the shorter scale is probably the only one of it’s kind, but it’s the perfect choice anyhow. You could look at the gibson website; I’d be surprised & re-informed if there was anything similar there.

: I’m no expert by any means but, I would first try a locking nut. It should help keep your guitar in tune better when using the tremelo. No good quality trem block will fit the overseas bridge plate. If you wanna change the whole trem, check the fit from an old Ibanez Roadstar, and Fernandes, which is nearly drilled the same. Easier to keep yours and do this: Use Fender bullet strings. Switch to graphtech saddles, string trees, and possibly the nut. That would change the tone of a single coil Strat, but won’t affect your humbucker sounds much. The last talk about lubricants on this forum got ridiculous. So try white lithium grease which is clean and cheap. Dabit on all contact points of the trem, claw, springs, everything. If a floating trem is not of great importance, turn the claw screws in a full turn, or add 1 spring. 2 sets of 2 on the outsides, or look into tremsetter from hipshot. Let ’em know how it turns out. i just received my les paul studio guitar from ups and was so excited to play it. when i did, i noticed the G string would make a buzzing sound when hit open or from frets 1 and 2. no other string made that noise. is there anything i can do to get it fixed or should i send the guitar back? it really bothers me. OR SHOULD I JUST LIVE WITH THE BUZZING?

sounds like an incorrectly cut nut, you definatly should not live with it, get in contact with the supplier and get them to deal with it, you can prove the point by slackening off the G string, and placing a little tiny peice of paper under the G string where it runs over the nut, you need to lift it by about 1/2 millimetre, if the buzzing stops then it is a nut cut too deep, and the nut needs replacing, not a job i would recomend to a beginer. your gibson warranty will cover this problem.

I found this on a review of the studio (Could be a loose spring): The guitar came with Gibson .09-.42 strings and were promptly changed to .10-.46 sized strings, which are my personal favorites. Set up was excellent from the factory with intonation dead on — even with the string change. I did notice that the "B" string saddle rattled when I bent a note on that string. I turned the screw a few turns and then readjusted the intonation. That took care of the loose spring. : Sounds like the strings rattling on the frets, but im not a les paul perfect guy so Lee should take this one : : i just received my les paul studio guitar from ups and was so excited to play it. when i did, i noticed the G string would make a buzzing sound when hit open or from frets 1 and 2. no other string made that noise. is there anything i can do to get it fixed or should i send the guitar back? it really bothers me. It’s a cutaway archtop and the only markings I can see other than the Kay name is a number inside ( K1 8901 ) could be model and/or serial number. Any info such as age and if worth repairing? Thanks

I have one that I purchased off ebay. I refretted it, dialed in the action, added a floating pickup and flatwound strings. The thing is an absolute kick to play. If you reset the neck (which I would recommend) change the neck angle. It just isn’t steep enough to drive that mammoth spruce top in the stock configuration or you could electrify it and have a realy cool jazz guitar

Hello, I’ve just purchased the above and am a little perplexed with the American twin-pivot bridge. I haven’t come across this before and am wondering if I’ve set it up right. I’ve screwed the two front pivot screws down flush and angled the rear edge of the plate approx. 1/8" up from the guitar. Is this correct or should the bridge be positioned level with the guitar like a Floyd Rose? Thanks for any answers.

How do you figure out which model guitar an SR is? If I recall, when I bought it in the early ’90’s it was a "1300 or 1305". It was a floor model and the guy had forgotten. It sounded good so I bought it. The serial number is F311128 made in Japan. What’s up with Ibanez not MARKING their models?

i dont know what those models are, but you need a 3/4 size nylon strung guitar, or a classical sometimes called spanish guitar, nylon strings are easier on the fingers, the 3/4 size body will be easier to use than a full body size, and the classical guitars have wider spacing between the strings. if those 2 models you have said have 6 steel strings then i would advise against them.

Margaret, listen to Lee, and further, perhaps he can suggest an actual brand name and price of a 3/4 size, nylon strung guitar in the UK. I personally know 6, 7 and 8 year olds, about 50 children in all. You must have the smaller bodied, and a shorter scaled guitar. I consult with them at music, utilizing all instruments, and in sports. Also, excuse me for venting, but there are volumes of material by experts published on the internet, thousands of words talking about posture, left hand, right hand positions, muscles and tendons, all the way down to the little pinkie, and most guitarists don’t know that. So, I was aggravated lately, trying to explain something similar. IN YOUR CASE, the size and type of guitar is important to make the child physically comfortable, as well as anatomically able to play.

One of our pickup makers is Ben at http://www.truetonetechnologies.com. He’ll set you up for a fraction of the price. We pay $80 – 90 US for all 3 pups. About strings. All kinds of opinions there. We don’t play with many, or mince words. We are bent on 10 – 46’s for Strats. Try D’Addario’s for value, Fender Bullet Nickel Brights if you’re a trem user, Ernie Ball Slinkys if you’re a bender, and Elixir Poywebs if you’re smart. Samick is the largest guitar manufacturer in the World. But they hide behind different names. If you got a good one, keep it, and give ‘er all you got! This is long already, but don’t do the EMG thing. One active pickup with a 9 volt battery and a special jack? I’ve done it and it didn’t really make sense. Order a hot bridge. Amps. We took a vote. Warm to so explosive it’ll fry your brains … a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe or DeVille.

got my first guitar its a 30yr old Aims LP copy Black Beauty knock-off w/maple neck and black inlays & gold hardware. I haven’t even played it yet, however I noticed something rattling around inside so I carefully removed the bigger plate/cover on the back and a 1 inch spring fell out (like that of a fountain pen, only bigger). Now Im afraid to play it. Any idea where that spring should go or whats it for? I will be sending this to local guitar pros for a setup. I will post pics of my lovely LP soon (for your viewing pleasure 😉

Most likely it’s a pickup adjustment spring. These springs go around the screw that attaches the pickup to the pickup ring. Take the pickups out to check & if one is missing, simply replace it.

That is an awsome guitar, that whole G&L range is something very special, they incorerate a lot of p90 style fat single coil pick ups, strange colours, odd shapes, a little innovative but still with a classic distintive sound. i hope you get the guitar you are after.

u fools. dimebag was a master. he had possibly the biggest stage presense for a lead in metal, especially considering the complexity of what he played. and for gods sake listen to the music, dont read the articles, thats wot its all about!

He had his own signature guitar, held a few columns in the music mags, over the years ive read quite a bit on him, ive never been turn on by his kind of metal shredding but he certainly was very good indeed.

ive never been too keen on his style of music, nothing against metal, just never liked it much. im sure that there is a lot of music you close your ears to, i know Steve Vai is a very gifted player but i just cant listen to a single track of his, ive tried, and i just switch myself off after 60 secs and skip the track and so on. I know he isnt metal, but he is a shredding widdling 3 minute solo player. Ive been playing guitar for 26 years, and i play in a band and i maybe get a 4 bar solo in a song and i think thats enough, i like a good rock song with a few verses a couple of choruses and a solo in the middle, i listen to all types of music but metal does nothing for me, there are many metal players like dimebag, and im sure it wont take long for someone to step into his shoes.

I like vai. He’s just a solo guitarist, and like it or not he’s good. Same goes for darryl. It all depends on liking mountain-cliff solo’s (you get the idea)or not. please just listen to the music more than once and you’ll see it’s beauty

i think that they just never stood the test of time, nobody wants them, what was flavour of the month in the shredding days of 1983, is now seen as a bit of an embaressment, you can now buy Kramer on the internet, they are very cheap and seem to be very nice guitars.

Columbus wre without doubt one of the worst guitars ever made, all models are rubbish. ive seen a few around in the mid 80’s and the quality beggars belief. I suppose you could use it as a doorstop, chisel out the inside, cut off the neck and use it as a large ashtray? maybe a fruit bowl? do they make plywood fruitbowls?

I must confess that I have not heard any of his guitar licks, but I hear the man was phenomenal. I think that folks making money off trinkets, tickets, and his image after his murder are at best Ace holes. What about decency? He has a family, think of them. When you have to stoop to selling crap and making money from the death of others, you cease being a human being. Boycott the auctions. Save your money. Buy a cd instead. Thanks.

I used to think no guitarist could ever match Kirk Hammett, and i think its a shame no-one has heard of Dimebag, but i’ve shown all my mates and they’re starting to worship the guy like i do so i think everyone should at least listen to Dimebag’s work before jumping to false conclusions, coz i guarantee u won’t be disappointed.

Thanks Here are two quotes directly from the notes of a renowned amp designer/engineer, copyright acknowledged. 1. "Bias is a negative voltage fed to the tubes. It makes them work right and sound right. If it is off – underbias (too little voltage) the tubes will glow red hot, the amp will hum and sound bad." On some amps, you can set the bias yourself. But it is more likely this: 2. "Old amplifiers very rarely have had the bias filter capacitor replaced. If it is bad it sends a hum into the amp." Upgrade or replace.

The power supply takes the AC voltage from the wall outlet and converts or rectifies it into DC. Any ripple left in the DC from inedequate filtering is audible as hum. Over years, the inside of the capacitors dries out and they become ineffective. Any electronics shop can replace the filter caps. It should be a very inexpensive job (under $50) so if the shop starts quoting bigger numbers, go somewhere else!

hey! a gd way to start is to get a beginners guitar book, try and get lessons too. If u have a gd guitar teacher it helps:-) Practice makes perfect… it takes time to be a gd guitarist ive been at it for only 2 years but im in a band and we tour so its gd. It depends what music u want to play. When i started out i mainly played punk-rock, you should try to get tabs for blink 182 (all the small things) or smells like teen spirit(which i know isnt punk rock its grunge but its still an easy song to learn). Start with the basics, dont jump into things. Learn the common cords, power cords and barre cords are the bulk of most rythem guitar playing… start out slow and remeber to practice. Try and practice every day even if its only for 10 or 15 mins. If u want any more help feel free to email me at: [email protected]

I agree with Lee, & I think the key word is Practice, Practice, Practice! Another good word is Persistance! DON’T GIVE UP! WORK on that favorite song of yours, As well & your scales & riffs & cord progressions. & ask help wherever you can find it, but DON’T GIVE UP! And eventually that favorite song of yours WILL start sounding beter & beter & it will be getting easier & easier to play also! Then the next song will be a littler easier to learn also, but it’s the same thing over & over. Practice at lease 1 hour a day, EVERY DAY & be PERSISTANT! & ENJOY! Try some E A & B cord combinations, & some C F & G cord combinations, & then think about them, it’s the same thing, only a different key. Then think, there are a lot of different keys, so try it in ALL of them! Recognize the progression, its a common one in a lot of old rock songs, same cords in different keys with different beats & tempos. Also try and make your cords sound clear, no FAT FINGERING, that’s sloppy! Every note that is played in the cord should ring CLEAR! And practice changing cords quickly, but ALLWAYS CLEARLY! GOOD LUCK & Have FUN & ENJOY! PERSISTANTLY! Keith

nylon string classical/spanish guitar is easier on the fingers and has a wider neck and wider string spacings, so you can move your fingers easier, learn some good theory, but also learn a tune you like, if you have a favorite song by an artist you like try to learn the song, and most of all you need to keep up the practice, if you get stuck on anything post your question on here. Good luck

I am booking several critically acclaimed acoustic guitarists and am open to suggestions as to new venues to pursue throughout the U.S.A. and overseas. They are flexibile in terms of where they play, but probably 100-300 seats or festivals are best at present since we are involved in some audience building at this time. They are primarily instrumentalists, though a couple of them do sing. I’ve found to date that a number of venues are reluctant to book them, not because they aren’t world class musicians, but because they are afraid solo guitar music is somewhat "esoteric." I find that once we get our foot in the door, the music does the talking from there and the audiences are delighted they attended the concerts. Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions.

ESP vintage 100,200,300,400’s and Vintage plus’ are probably one of their best strat style guitars, they give a nice jazzy tone clean and give a decent hard rock, metal tone. With EMG’s installed however, they are the perfect lead guitar. I am still on the search for one i myself can purchase and have found a few on ebay. Take a look and see if you like them. Personally i give the guitars a 9 out of 10 just because the body looks just like a fenders, otherwise all ive got is good reviews for it. Good Luck. : : Anybody got any info on SN# S970740 Strat? It’s in excellent condition, & I got it for $250 about 5 years ago, & it sure plays good, what ever it is. Is it worth anthing? Its got a really hot pickup in the bridge posistion though. Its almost to much treble for me. Is that one of those X1 pickups? : : It is a 1979 model, could easily have been made in 1980. If it’s not the 25th anniversay model, it’s a standard, identifiable by large headstock, bullet truss rod, 3 bolt micro-adjust neck plate. There’s a high probability that it has black plastic parts, instead of white. And some very real possibility that you got an 1980 X1 bridge if the guitar was assembled when they were available. Also of note, cool ash body. It’s a heavy ash though. Next generation switched to alder. They sell for around US $700. Always get another opinion, if it’s an opinion. Thanks Gretchen, Your right about the very heavy natural ash wood body, Bullet truss rod, & a 3 bolt micro-adjust neck plate. It has a white face plate & black plastic pickups & controls & like i said , its bridge pickup is all about treble! Also NO wammy bar! But whats the distinction that would make it a 25th anniversay model? The only two things I don’t like about it is the pickup & no wammy bar like my 59 Strat has. This might date me a bit but I payed $239 for my 59 when I bought it new back then. Started playing Oct 18th, 1957, on my 7th birthday! I traded in my single pickup 57 Rickenbacker for it & got $75 trade in for it! Thanks for your time! Keith

What’s the best way to ship a guitar? I have one with a case, and am not sure how to ship it. I fear the neck isn’t properly embraced by the case, and the body has a bit of wiggle room that I can’t seem to fix up.

stuff the gapps with crushed up paper, cable tie the whole case shut, you could put it into a cardboard box if you wanted to protect the case, but that seems a little extreme.

I wish we had 1957 Strats, Rickenbackers and 59 Les Pauls to sell at today’s prices. The 25th Anniversary model Strat (1954-79) of 1979 and 1980 is distinctive, because they are silver, with black trim, and have a 4 bolt neck plate, deluxe Sperzel tuning keys, a 6 digit serial # beginning with 25, commemorative neckplate stamp and black lettering on the upper horn or the body. Originally released in white pearl, a Huffy bicycle colour, there were immediate problems with paint cracking and peeling. 500 were prodiced in white, those that were not sold were recalled & refinned in Porsche silver. A total of 10,000 were made.

: I am looking to sell thisbaby, what is a fair price,it is in awesome condition Your Strat is one of the unrecognized great ones from Fender and the much talked-about, hero Pres. Dan Smith. Dan’s still around hangin’ out with the Hellecasters. Until people catch on to how excellent the 84’s, 86 and 87 US models are, they are paying only around $700 because of a psychological barrier. Many buyers of "used and not quite vintage" Strats do not want to cross the threshold of the price of a new one, at $799. Also, Fender had a $100 rebate program on the new models this year.

I’m having trouble- when I play on the lower part of the fretboard, my pinkie really wants to flair up after I pull it off. Is this a common problem? I feel lke it’s slowing me down by being generally sloppy. What’s the best way to keep a tight flow when doing drills? But this will stop the pinkie from jumping up on its own, when you want it down on the board, in play. Wow…I can’t BELIEVE all the idiotic advice I read in this Forum! lol Ok..to start…you practice guitar to get good on the guitar, right? Ok. If you use those stupid guitar hand exercise squeeze pieces of crap, all it will do is make you better at squeezing those guitar hand exercise squeeze thing pieces of crap!!! READ THIS AND TRY TO UNDERSTAND!!!Forearm-curling weights is THE WORST thing you can do for guitar playing!! When playing the guitar, your fingertips should be floating over the fretboard, using very little pressure. That is allowed by nervous "fine-motor control". Lifting weights "tears" the muscle, and makes it grow. One other thing it does is "de-train" the muscle. Playing guitar is also a "muscle-memory" thing, so you’re screwing yourself there too. So listen people…ya wanna play better guitar? Try practising!!! There’s no fast-tracking way to do it. You won’t become a great hockey player by dressing up with all your pads, skates, sweater and helmet, and sitting of front of the TV watching hockey! There’s NO EASY WAY. So…for all of y’all who want a condensed version of this entry here it is: To get good on the guitar, PRACTICE! THAT’S THE ONLY WAY TO GET GOOD ON THE GUITAR. YOU CAN GET GOOD AT SOMETHING ONLY BE DOING IT, AND DOING IT ALOT!! WEIGHT-LIFTING IS DAMAGING TO GUITAR PLAYING! Name one WORLD-CLASS guitarist who has huge forarms from doing forearm curls! Right..you can’t. Most of all use that grey thing in your skull.

well ive had alot of that when i started playing, but if you keep playing at stressed levels it will improve your hand, but if it cramps up, just knock it off for the mean time, the only way to get better is to practice, at this point in time my hand constantly flares and cramps because of the accident so you shuld be better off just practiciing sclaes repeatedly until it wears down. : I’m having trouble- when I play on the lower part of the fretboard, my pinkie really wants to flair up after I pull it off. well i usually bust out the minor mods at first. starting with the basic, stripping of the paint (only when beat to death as in almost no paint) then repaint it with my own personal supply (thank god for dollar general) and ive changed the bridge in one of my guitars, but usually leave the major hardware the same unless its extremely beaten and useless, i should change the tuners but moneys short right now but otherwise i put down a pair of schaller locking tuners with the automatic cutting edge on them. after that i reassemble the guitar and then do the wiring, usually consists of new pots and inputs, i try my best to get ahold of the pots which can be pulled up for extra distortion, but again, moneys short so i dont do that anymore, i mainly use the same materials on them and on clean them up and repaint them, such as the bridges, hun\mbuckler rings, all that stuff, trussrod covers are always repainted or replaced, and the humbucklers are replaced if a friend of mine will donate cause im cheap like that, saying i need the money for car payments. thats bout the usual i do, i rebuild my friends guitars too upon request and usually only charge like 50 bucks+parts and thats it, some say its cheap i really dont care, its gettin paid to do what i like. thanks… Trevor : : ever tried any? Sorry about your hand, the cast & everything. The part about push/pull pots you mentioned. Are you putting passive distortion on board, by any chance? Back to back silicone semiconductors, like home-made Black Ice? Just wondering? We’ve done it, but it’s hard to get a good effect. Takes a powerful pickup. Anyhow, one kinda stands out. It’s a white Strat like Hendrix, got 3 Rio Grande Tallboys, a push/pull 250K volume pot, but the pull turns the bridge always on, for the 7 sounds total. Then the tone is one for all – master tone. So the final tone knob is dedicated to passive distortion, or fuzz in this case. Turn it up, and there’s Jimi, without a fuzzbox!

I usually take whatever pickups or humbucklers i can get for the push pull’s but on the v im thinking if the pair of EMG 81’s i was bidding on doesnt work, EMG HZ H1’s and use that till i can afford a massive humbuckler. Another thing i was lookin at was a pair of seymour duncans, prolly screamin demons but possibly duncan designs, cause i have a schecter that has duncans in it and with the push pull in clean it gets an awesome acoustic tone, the twang and everything, diostortionwise it doesnt do much justice, but when its pulled up its in the way distorted (i give my guitars what theyre made for) so i usually dont use it distorted. Hi again. Barring any unforseen tragedies my LP copy will be here for Christmas. My question is, generally speaking, are all original Gibson LP cases created equal? For example, will a 79 Gibson LP fit prpoerly in a ’57 case? Also, generally speaking, will most "lawsuit" era copies fit nicely in an original Gibson case? Of course the prudent thing to do is to measure – twice. Im just wondering how generic a fit the vintage beat up cases are that I see on ebay. I am not looking for a new case, I prefer the lived-in look.

The answer is yes, if you buy a les paul copy it will fit in an original les paul case, if they didnt then they wouldnt look like copies, i have one original gibson les paul standard 1989, a gibson les paul TV special double cutaway, 1 2003 korean tokai les paul copy, and a 1979 japanese tokai les paul copy, they all fit in eachothers cases.

well boys n’ girls… im finally back after my super long vacation from the guitar scene. i had broken my hand working on a car and been out of commission till bout 4 weeks ago. Had the engine on the hoist and i guess the hoist couldnt handle it, shifted a little and the transmission dropped right on my handpinching it in between the ground and a wall and the transmission itself, broke a hole in the wall and plunged my hand into a stud, that caused just bout every bone in my hand to smash in half. Unfortunatly that ment no guitar for a long time. had rehab and well now here i am. my two bands decided to go on without waiting for me so theyve gone and screwed me over and im starting to work on guitars again, ive tried to play a few times but it really really kills still so i was told to keep off it till after christmas, but what thew hell does the doctor for. just so you know this is taking forever so to spare myself and you some more boredom im going to tell you all that ive gone and gotten myself the courage to try to get my custom guitars put on a website, Neal moser didnt really say hed take my designs and i cant afford to have one made so, they are up for your veiwing now, also you can post questions in my email and i will put them up on the site the next day with an answer or you can put them in my guestbook, well, im back and rebuilding another v so id better get too it so, thanks alot and i look forward to this site again… my website address is http://www.freewebs.com/metallitiaman/ thanks Trevor

It’s coming up to christmas, and I just got an electric guitar. It’s a combined Christmas present, and it works great. I got it off a guy in school for €250 second hand. I’m recommending this guitar- Yamaha Pacifica. I got a great amp aswell for a really good price. A Kustom amp for €119, but I got a discount of ten euro, so normal price it would be €129. If you ever want a great guitar + amp to start off on, get these. Yamaha Pacifica + Kustom amp. If anyone thinks there not good guitars or amps, or has any other opinions, e-mail me.

Kona makes Great guitars! The model you are purchasing has a sweet mellow sound that resounds because of its depth. I personally think this model is way better than other over $1000 guitars. Just ask friends how much they think you paid for it and you will probably get answers in the over $750 range. There are few guitars thta can touch this one for price/value. You’d have to spend over $3000 buying a top line guitar ( and even then you’d be hard-pressed to justify the difference in price). I highly recommend this guitar and wouldn’t be caught without it. I pamper mine to death…

Here’s the thing… I own an american texas special strat (i.e. standard). I’m thinking of replacing my tremolo with a floyd rose tremolo. Does it change the strat sound? If yes, how much… Thank you guys………

: Here’s the thing… I own an american texas special strat (i.e. standard). I’m thinking of replacing my tremolo with a floyd rose tremolo. Does it change the strat sound? If yes, how much… Thank you guys……… I’m not a guy. Yep, Floyd’s effect tonality. Everything effects a Strat, even the way you hold it. Some "guys" refuse to change saddles, like to graphtech; refuse to change nuts (excuse me) and won’t touch even string trees, as in changing to rollers or graphite. So, you would be altering all this with a whole bridge/locking nut setup. But the sound would be heavier, slightly metallic (I blame the nut), with perhaps a little more sustain, and not as sproingy. Some pickups will compensate somewhat, and bring back the bell-like tones. I just set up a Heavy Metal Strat with new Seymour Duncan vintage single coils, so at least some positions are Stratty. Strange mix. Then there’s a nasty humbucker and the FR. Sort of 2 guitars in 1.

Have you tried ebay or something for getting a gibson one? Other types may be just as good but I can’t really recommend any. Harmony Central doesn’t have a review section on accessories so it may be hard to get hold of a really top- notch one. i found a wanger @ http://www.guitar-parts.com/content/estore_details.asp?product=978 which looks the same as the standard unit. Unfortunately i couldn’t find a UK stockist of them, though. Hope this helps at all.

thanks for looking, i have seen these ones you quoted, but they dont have the engraving, i want it to look authentic. Gibson say they dont sell them as parts, but they still source them to go on the latest firebird models and also the angus young sig model.

: thanks for looking, : i have seen these ones you quoted, but they dont have the engraving, i want it to look authentic. : Gibson say they dont sell them as parts, but they still source them to go on the latest firebird models and also the angus young sig model. All very true, and if Gibson don’t co-operate, you could try a little strategy or pressure tactics. First open gibson.com and go to valleyartsguitars. Contact VA politely and ask if they will get you the vibrola. If they say no, tell them you are going to get it somehow, so they might as well make some money and get one for you. If that’s impossible, try approaching through Les Paul forum and look for Tom Wittrock. Or search Tom Wittrock with something like google. Write a friendly note and ask for his assistance – he has clout and should have what you need already in his possession, or know somebody who has it or be able to get it for you. Have a nice adventure.

I am attempting to teach myself jazz guitar. One problem I have involves playing barre chords. I experience intense soreness in my thumb as well as the area between my thumb and forefinger after playing these chords for just a short while. I have made a concerted effort to correct this problem to no avail. I have tried different techniques in holding the neck which haven’t helped. I have tried applying as little pressure as I can to the neck which likewise hasn’t been of resolution. Can anyone offer some insight to how I may correct this flaw? It’s a major impediment in my advancement with the instrument. Thanks.

If you have not had your guitar set up properly, that would be the place to start. It seems you need to build up your grip; a grip exerciser ( with good padding ) may help. A tennis ball with a hole in it can work. Even very strong people can find trouble with a new physical challenge. Use "choking" ( cutting some of the chords short by releasing left hand pressure) when playing chord vamps, especially until your grip develops. It’s a very useful technique anyway and well worth mastering. It gives your hand a brief rest every so often. Avoid a sharp bend in your wrist; keep the neck high. Hope this is of some help.

Thank you for your assistance, esp. the comment about the neck. I never had a formal set-up either (other than changing the strings once), so I’ll consider that as well.

i cant see anyone wanting to forge a epiphone serial number, also the headstock on an epi is very distinctive, i wouldnt worry about it, you have a genuine one, and if the serial numbers work like a gibson then yours is a 2003 model.

First, you DO mean a humbucker, right? I myself am playing a 1984 Kramer modified with a Seymour Duncan Invader, which has the Blink 182 sound. Also, you could try Gibson’s re-issue Dirty Fingers which Tom is using now. I went to Gibson with another artist a few years ago and asked them to make us a couple. I didn’t expect a whole production line, just 2 pickups. They told me and Keef to take off. But they did it for Tom.

You gotta be a humbucker man. With advanced valve technology, here’s the scoop. You have to turn up the scoop switch! Gain is set at half way. If you got humbuckers, you push the bright switch. Most often, dist channel 2 is used. That should nuke ’em. If for some reason you got single coils, oh boy! Always use scoop. You could add a little more gain until you feedback. Now important – you gotta crank up the bass with these puppies! Your still using dist 2. Good luck. Let us know how it works out.

pedals?? maybe a good distortion pedal played through your good clean channel is what is needed? there are thousands to choose from, but a good starter pedal for you would be the Boss MT-2 (Metal-Zone) has some great distortion sounds, plus benefits from a 4 band EQ, perhaps you could tone out the ‘Twang’

: Hi, : Can some one give me some advice on buying a lap steel guitar (what to look for ? etc ?) : What about the Gretsch 1700/1715 electromatic models (how good or bad are the ?) : Many thanks, : ALAIN There really are no bad lap steels. Most were made by premium manufacturers, very serious about their craft, knowing that their product would see professional use. Except any copies by Regal or Harmony trying to capitalize. We rate National as Rolls Royce, Gibson and Gretsch as Cadillacs. Fender is a working man’s Chevy truck. At some point Gretsch quality starts to slip as a result of personal habits of the founders of the company, and his family. Gretsches have the only pickups that seemed to break down. But they can be rewound. Since the top 3 are all good, the features to look for are purely cosmetic. Who has the best chrome and the most pearl? A double neck is more desirable than a single. None should be more than $500. There is virtually no market for these. It goes without saying, you must get original case included.

Then, when Fender deemed it appropriate, they brought back Sunn reissues, telling the public, it was due to demand. Yes the demand came from the Board Room. I think you know that already. Their 200 Watts RMS w/100 watts per channel demolishes buildings, and your eardrums. But you’re right. They’re rather clean, even with distortion & reverb, so your distortion has to be outboard, in-line, from a pedal prior to input. They are generally from the 70’s and still going strong, did I say strong?, running wild after 30 years. They can always be maintained with standard parts if necessary. I can’t tell you anything that hasn’t already been said 10 – 20 times at http://www.HarmonyCentral.com under guitar/amp/reviews. Very impressive pieces of equipment where sound, not looks matters.

: Can anyone tell me the prodution date of serial # E447932 fender strat? thank you You picked one of the most interesting time periods for Fender. These necks were stamped in 1984 at the old Fullerton CA plant, and some were built as whole Strats in 84 while the plant was being shut down. When the new Corona plant opened, the necks were taken there and put on bodies which are stamped in the pocket 1986 – 87. Your Strat with the 1984 neck is either 1984, 86 or 87. If you have an 84 you could also have a 1980 – 84 X1 bridge pickup as a bonus! If you have either a 1986 or 87, you have one of the first American Standards.

Going to be getting a D-28 and already have an amp. Also going to install a LR Baggs I-Beam passive pickup but was wondering what the typical amplified setup for most people is? Vol pedal, chorus? Thanks! Joe

You are off to a flying start with a great guitar and pickup. Might as well stay with the high quality and get a Baggs preamp; you won’t be sorry. Hopefully your amp is not an electric guitar amp; you want something with a flat frequency response, even just a powered speaker. Other than that a good reverb unit ( the cheaper Lexicons turn up on ebay and are fantastic ) and maybe a Boss CS2 compressor pedal used at very low compression settings for some numbers. Many digital chorus units sound crappy. A Lexicon MPX 100 has reverbs, chorus, flange, emulated tape delay etc, and they sound classy. What music are you into?

The latest thing is the Fishman Pro EQ. You must have it. All my musical gigging buddies until now, and some still (those without onboard pre-amp) have used only guitar with transducer to Boss EQ into a Boss Chorus pedal, into their sound system. Myself – acoustic/electric with Fishman onboard into Flanger. I see your rationale for the volume pedal. The new Fishman blender system takes care of everything in one neat, economical package. And it even helps control feedback.

Sadly it is very difficult to get a real acoustic sound. Piezo pickups will make you cringe especially mounted under the bridge. (One either side of the bridge then an old Passac unit is pretty cool). A tiny fishman mic mounted at the end of the fretboard and marginally above the soundboard is great at low volumes. An Ibeam is worth considering. You really need reverb ( see my other post ). If you manage to get a great sound, let us all know; it’s a bit of a Holy Grail still. When you hear a real clasical guitar acoustically, you hear the sound coming from the top, plus the sound coming from the sound hole ( out of phase and "EQ’d" by the body ) plus a lot of reflections from walls etc. When you just take the vibration of the top and amplify it, it is very disappointing. At higher volumes, amplified acoustics run into all kinds of trouble as they are "microphonic". If you are lucky enough to play in concert conditions, stick with standard external mics. and use a concert guitar.

: I have a classical guitar and would like to attach a microphone. What is a good sound system or this purpose. If you mean amp – there are many. Fender Acoustasonics are sufficiently good for a decent price, either the Jr. or the 30. If you mean whole system – then the Fender Passport for everything including P.A. If that’s not what you meant at all, please be specific.

i have recently bought a harmonica from a market. Unfortunately, i was stupid enough to buy one from a market and not do any research. I am not sure what type it is, or how to play it properly. It has no side button, no holes on the top just the holes you blow through at the front. It has two sets of these holes, each having 16. I searched for hours on the internet trying to find it – it has no specific brand – i found it but it says absolutely nothing about it and i cannot contact the person. The only thing it says is that it is a twenty-tone harmonica. When i blow in and out of it it makes differnt notes. PLEASE please please give me information i would be most grateful, you can email me too if you like

What you have is probably a crappy harmonica. The most common type of harmonica used by guitar players is the 10 hole diatonic. Good brands are Hohner and Lee Oskar, which are pretty expensive, although Hohner now make a cheapie as part of their huge range. Johnsons are cheaper and not bad. There is also a Brazilian company I can’t remember. Diatonic harps are fixed in one key, so you need several to cover several keys . All the blow notes are notes from the key chord. The suck notes cover most of the other notes of the key. Blues players usually use "cross harp" which just means the key of the harp is not the key of the song. An A harp would be used against the key of E; a D harp against the key of A. A good place to start is to buy an A harmonica and get a recording of blues in E. Just stuff about, mainly down the lower end, and things will start to happen. The harmonicas with a button are sort of in two different keys, usually C with the button out and C# with it in. This type can play all keys but is expensive and not as easy to teach yourself. Stevie Wonder is hot on this type of harp.

Anybody got any ideas about what a Westbury Standard W2110 might be worth these days? They made them in Japan between 1979-82 as far as I can figure. I’ve had one in a cupboard for about three years, dug it out and put some strings on it yesterday, and it sounds as fabulous as it ever did.

there are basicaly 3 different types of overdrive pedal, there is overdrive, distortion and then fuzz, if you want overdrive then you cant go wrong with the Boss pedals, they are built to outlast a nuclear war, and give a very good tone, what kind of sound do you want from the pedal? by the way i think you mean a DS-1 , i dont think there is a boss pedal called a sd-1.

For a good clean amp with crunch pedal. I say Zakk Wylde MXR. Add dirty amp and get a shit ton of boost. The thing is incredible. depending on your amp. There is some noise. But well worth it.

Hope to pick up a used beater to learn on. I have seen Tokai copies at guitar shows going for as much as the Gibsons themselves. That means people like them, because they are really good. You’re safe with an Epiphone which you might get for a reasonable price and get your money back later. I would choose a brand new Agile or a Dean. They are identical guitars from the same source and have no problems. I have played all 5 brands, I’m a guitar store junkie.

i have 2 Tokai’s, a jap 1979 original love rock, and a Korean 2004 love rock custom, they are very close to gibsons, i disagree with the costs, i paid £475 for the 1979, and £399 for the custom, the pickups on the 79′ are not as good as Gibsons, but a visit to the seymour duncan website can cure that, the pickups on the custom are spot on, ive played a lot of les paul copies and they are the best, but the Epi’s are very good too, but the epi headstock lets it down. And the worst? that honour has to go to the ‘Colombus’i think the 70’s colombus was possibly the worst guitar of all time.

Agree 100%, but being a novice I cannot guage the "feel" so to speak. I must read reviews, etc and base a decision on the judgements and observations of others. However, I am more likely to play and practice if my LP has a reasonably striking appearance! 😉

you set it for whatever sounds good to your ears, but if it were me, i’d take all the gain off the amp and overdrive the pedal, i have a turbo rat distortion pedal and 3 valve amps, what i find works realy well is to turn my amp up with no gain, and set it to a volume where the output valves and speakers are naturaly breaking, just a little overdriven, then i switch on the turbo rat, and it never disapoints.

Of course overdriving a valve amp sounds WAY different from doing same to a solid state amp. Set the volume you want without the pedal, then bring the pedal in and set the distortion you want, then compare pedal on and off and adjust the pedal gain, then fine tune the distortion and go around again until you’re happy.

Of course Mark played a vintage Strat on that one, with all 3 pickups on in parallel, normal/reverse wound/normal. Clapton does this on After Midnight. Kind of funkadelic. And the overall effect is noise cancelling. You can get this with an acoustic simulator effect, if you keep the effect level low, and the amp volume higher. With your Squier, you could lower the height of the bright ceramic pickups and use more amp, or change your control pots from 500 to 250K. As Lee said, choose bridge/mid. Try to sound like Robert Cray. Add that dash of chorus or delay to get close. Since there’s no plectrum, you could use a felt pick or super soft matchpicks.

There are good and bad teachers and good and bad books. I learned from books, but got a lot of tips from other players. If you look at the books first you can get better value from a teacher; I don’t think a weekly lesson is necessary while you are getting your hands working, and learning basic theory.

Zephyrs are the real thing, made in the USA form 1930’s to late 50’s and there are many different models, all luxury liners. Most Epiphone activity and the Phd’s to go with it are in Nashville.

I have recently bought a jumbo cutaway acoustic, elec, compared it to a Gibson,Ibanez and chose it over them, it rocks ! Great tone & playability. Trying to find a company website ! Any info on accessing it would be appreciated. In Addition, the strings that came on it seems to have a great lifespand and sounded good, liked e’m better than the Martin SP’s I have on it now, does anyone know which brand come on it when purchased new ? I went out and bought the Hal Leonard Guitar Method by Will Schmid, and i really don’t understand it. So if anyone knows a better book or anything please please e-mail me at [email protected] When i first started out i got annoyed with how much progress i was making and locked myself in my room for two days straight just to get to grips with the thing. I came out triumphant driving my parents crazy with "Whole lotta love" pounding through the speakers at every oppurtunity. All i did was get a short "how to play" book and progressed onto tabs from the net. Honestly, the best way to learn is through practice and if i didn’t spend those hours commited to the thing in the first place, then i doubt if i would have kept on at it. Nevertheless, i had to go see a chiropractor to look at my wrists after and i couldn’t hold anything properly for a while after, but don’t let that put you off! All you need to do is buy a little book telling you how to read tab and a few chords and you’re off and running, you could get a teacher but it’s up to you to decide. looking back on all the cr@p ive written above i dont think ive actually written anything useful. oh well. good luck mate

Chords come with time. You’ll relearn them, personally, I prefer in person teaching rather than books, that’s how I learned. If I ever see any books that seem good, I’ll recommend them.

I need to find the value on a guitar, it’s a Framus Acoutic, made in the 1970’s, I believe. It’s not electric, it’s older. I cleaned it up, it says it was made ‘in the heart of Bavaria’ but then it also says made in W. Germany. I need to find out how much it’s worth. Anyone know a site?

Framus was a good-quality manufacturer, based in Bavaria, Germany. In the 1960s, their successes included the Star Bass, played by Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones at the time. Although the materials were always top quality, Framus increasingly fell out of step with player’s needs when it came to guitar design. I would estimate your acoustic to be worth £200-£300 in the UK but that’s a bit of a guess without knowing model and spec. Certainly in Europe, acoustic players seem more open to judging a guitar by its quality, rather than ‘brand of the month’.

i also have a framus acoustic, which is around thirty five years old. I took in to a guitar shop to get cleaned up and the assistant estimated its worth at around three hundred and seventy five pounds to four hundred. He also told me the guitar is increasing in value by fifty pounds every year, and was a vintage guitar!Mine also says it was made in the heart of bavaria, and is non eletric, so they could be very similar guitars. Hope this helps! Does your guitar also smell of weed inside? If not, the past owner of mine had a very bad habit, but i sincerley hope not, as it belonged to my gran. Over and Out!

There are many of us where I go to school. Slayer, if you love sustain and lasting harmonics, the neck thru does that. A set in, will sustain nicely also, depending on the rest of the guitar (think Les Paul, PRS Custom). The two words for bolt ons are attack and punch. So, there is a quick and aggressive translation of the note into sound, and it doesn’t last as long.

Apparently the ea or epiphone acoustic 255 is not an expensive guitar, and is thus not catalogued. Most likely one of the more recent examples.

i have 16 guitars in my collection, 2 of those have maple fingerboards (1 x strat, 1 x telecaster) and the rest are either brazilian rosewood or indian rosewood, their might be 22 different types but nearly all the guitars in your local guitar shop will use just 2.

its the wood they use on the face of the of the neck, this mostly applies to fender necks, 99% of fender necks are bolt on (screwed to the body, not glued) and are made of maple, but some have a fingerboard of rosewood added to the face of the neck and then frets are attached to that, and some of their necks have no attached fingerboard and are therefore maple. the maple necks are genraly made from a single piece of maple.

This model, probably SG Stereo was made from 1970 – 72, and a few later models were finished in 1974 – 75. A reliable source at the manufacturer says it was a production model, not made in any great numbers. It would be a pretty cool guitar. Why don’t you talk to Mandolin Bros. about it? They could be not far from you.

: Hello. I recently bought a lovely red Silvertone electric guitar at a garage sale. I’m trying to figure out when it was made and approximate value range. It is pleasing looking and plays well. I’d rate it a 7 on a 1 – 10 scale. The metal plate on the back list the model number as 759-1436-1, and the serial number as 270988. It is metallic red, having two pick-ups with black faces, a three-way toggle switch, two volume and one tone knobs, and a tremelo bar. The pick guard is two tone metallic silver, consisting of alternating vertical stripes of brushed (almost white) coloration, and polished (chrome like) coloration. I greatly appreciate any assistance.

the best one for the money is the one that sounds best to your ears. maybe you should look at buying a good hi-gain amp? Ive tried many distortion pedals in my time, but ive always gone back to the ProCat turbo rat, its a bit expensive, but it sounds fantastic.

I have a 69 reissue telecaster and recently bought new pickups for it. The pickups I have though are single coil but have 3 wires coming from each. I want to use a five position switch but have been unsuccessful in getting the sound I like out of it. Can anyone help?

I am familiar with Teles. You can not use a regular 5 way switch on them, unless it’s a Fender or Stew Mac Superswitch. If you use a regular 5 way, you can get all 3 tones in a symmetrical arrangement. If you explain what sounds you want, I’ll have one of the guys write to you. I have 1 – neck, 2 – neck & bridge series, 3 – neck & bridge parallel, 4 – neck & bridge series/out of phase, 5 – bridge. Thing womps, stomps and rules!

ok so my setup is a marshall tsl 100 jcm 2000 valve head going into a 1960 vintage 4×12 cab i need to know if my cab needs the impedance set correctly or needs biasing?? i played a gig recently and the sound engineer said that it smelt like the head was burning….and i must agree it does get REALLY hot and smell of burning wen i have it on…. this only seems to happen on the distortion valves on the right hand side….dont know if its meant to be like this also i wud like sum reccomendations for settings since im poo at them lol i want to sound like muse or the smashing pumpkins…or basically anything which u guys think sounds good thanks x mark

you dont ‘bias’ cabinets, only some older types of valve amp, you mostly need to rebias an amp when you change the output valves, in your case it will be 4 x el34’s. but im pretty sure that the marshall TSL series is an auto-biasing amp, so no worries there. one thing you need to watch for is the way you connect the head to the cab, make sure you match the impedence setting for the speakers, if you dont do this you can damage your amp’s output transformer, and that can be a very costly thing to replace, on your cab you have mono and stereo inputs, i think the vintage has 4/8/16 ohm impedence selections, so long as you match the output impedence of the amp, with the input impedence of the spekers you should be ok. i bet that is as clear as mud?? ps burnig smell could br the output transformer burning out. : ok so my setup is : a marshall tsl 100 jcm 2000 valve head going into a 1960 vintage 4×12 cab : i need to know if my cab needs the impedance set correctly or needs biasing?? : i played a gig recently and the sound engineer said that it smelt like the head was burning….and i must agree it does get REALLY hot and smell of burning wen i have it on…. : this only seems to happen on the distortion valves on the right hand side….dont know if its meant to be like this : also i wud like sum reccomendations for settings since im poo at them lol : i want to sound like muse or the smashing pumpkins…or basically anything which u guys think sounds good : thanks x : mark

i think if you are using the 4×12 vintage cab then you need to use the 16ohm output on the back of the amp to the cab, you should also buy a heavy duty cable for this and not just one of your old guitar leads, guitar leads tend to have a thin centre core conductor cable and are not best suited for the job, remember you are connecing an amp to a speaker cab so you should use something like the audio cable you would use for your home hifi, but get a heavier duty one. also a tip for you, never NEVER run your amp with no cab connected dont even switch it on unless there is a cab connected, you can realy wreck your amp doing this. but having said all this i think some congratulations are in order for your choice of amp and cab, if your cab has the celestion greenbacks then you have made an excellent choice and twinned with the TSL100 it will make a fantastic setup. check out this page on the marshall website for further info on impedence settings, http://www.marshallamps.com/images/extra/toptips.html

And since you said its not a bolt on you probably have a $1500+ guitar easily. To find any specific info on your guitar you would have to contact B.C. Rich.

Hi! I need an advice about a strap for a Classical Guitar. Normaly, it has no pins for a strap. There is a special straps for classics: one with a hook on the end (unreliable one) and other one, which holds both sides of the guitar body (better one). Is it reasonable to install a pin (I afraid of damaging an instrument) or two keep searching this second variant of special strap?

Jeez, everyone else plays sitting down, except Willie Nelson. Well, you can’t put a regular pin in the end due to lack of support bracing. The missing link, the ones used by some pros hook under the upper lip of the soundhole. They’re kind of awkward. I wonder if they are actually Saxophone slings. Still, check your nearest College or University for an opinion or demonstration.

Daisy Girl > Thanks. Finally, I’ve got through with it. Now I know, that two-sided classical guitar strap really exists and it is the best without making holes. Unfortunately, it is rare and I wasn’t able to get it in local shops. So, I’ve brought my guitar to violin-maker and he installed a pin. Now I would say that I’m very satisfied: playing classical guitar with traditional strap attachet to a single pin and to the headstok is pretty comfortable.

Ex: If you start in the Dmaj Ionian mode, do the following modes just use the F# C# notes of the D scale or do they use the #’s or b’s of there own scale. Ex: Dorian mode in Dmaj would be E.Right?? Can anyone explain them as simply as possible?? Thank you

If you scan down to where you previously asked this question, you will see that I answered it. Maybe I went into too much detail and confused you. So just think about the following: Modes are formed by choosing a new "home note" or starting point from another key ( the "mother key") The new mode has the same sharps/flats as the "mother key"

      • #93117

        Guest

you can replace the nut yourself, you get them without slots cut in, they are blank, when you take the old one out make sure you score through the varnish/lacquer around it with a craft knife, this will ensure you do not split away any existing overpainted lacquer, after you have scored it give it a gentle tap with a small pin hammer, knocking it back away from the fretboard, copy the string spacings from the old nut to the new, cut the slots and glue back in place with superglue, i think you call it crazy glue, the instant type glue. and that should be job done.
