Distortion pedals...

Alright, I finally have the hard earned cash to go out and buy something to
replace my abyssmal Boss Metal Zone (which will be up for sale soon on
Ebay). Now comes the task of finding a replacement that will give me the
sound I want.
The problem is this: I have access to certain distortion pedals in the area
where I live. These are Ibanez pedals, Boss Pedals, DOD Pedals, etc. I have
tried out most of the distortion pedals in their catalog and know what they
sound like. I would like to hear people's opinions on some distortion pedals
that I do not have access to because they are not available at any of the
dealers who are located in my area. So here goes...what do you guys think
of:
Marshall Shredmaster
MXR Distortion pedal
Pro Co Rat
Tech 21 Comptortion
Akai Shred-O-Matic Distortion

My distortion needs: harmonic distortion, not neccesarily "scooped mid" or
thrash metal type. Something along the lines of Van Halen to Megadeth range.
Please do not reply if you're gonna tell me to do the following:
1. Go out and try these pedals and see what sounds right to me...I am
already in the process of trying to get my hands on them.
2. Don't recommend anything by Danelectro.
3. Don't tell me to go look at Harmony Central's database. I'm not new to
guitar resources on the Net and I wouldn't be asking you this if I wasn't
looking for some fresh opinions.
Thanks.

Re: Distortion pedals...

i have a DOD death metal distortion pedal. I can get a pretty good amount of different sounds out of it. its mostly scratchy distortion. It sounds like a grunge but lower. its not too expensive and it works for me.
ok bye

You should be able to get a desirable tone out of a Boss Mt-2 which is along the lines of Van Halen "Fair Warning" era guitar tone or Megadeth "Rust in Peace" tone. It's a pedal that you really gotta tweak and work in conjunction with the EQ on your amp. As stated before, a tube amp is a must. Running the best effects on the market (vintage and/or new processors)through some crappy solid state combo amp is not going to produce good tone. Oh yeah, i agree with some of the comments on what pedals look like - my opinion is that all of them should be painted black because i just recently picked up an original 1979 MXR Stereo Chorus and this thing is ugly as hell - Yellow box with black writing. Too bad i'm not Eddie Van Halen cause i could match it with the guitar on the cover of VHII.

Hi, I was wondering depending on what type of distortion pedals you get, what prices would they start off from. Thanks!

Re: Punk Distortion Sound

I suggest a danelectro daddy'o. It can vary from 70's punk, early eighties hardcore to punkrock.

Tech 21 is awesome I think.

Re: Distortion pedals...

this site sux ass

Re: Distortion pedals...

I got the shredmaster:
not metal enough for me ... somehow the sound doesn't 'cut through' or something like that..

proco Rat:
a to simple sound... needs a good amp to go with it maybe....

metalzone:
thats's my favorite ... especially with a GE-7 graphical equalizer...then you ga rock, shred, and blaze away
and solo also with the equalizer in place...

Re: Distortion pedals...

I tried out a shredmaster and they rock. They are pretty cheap as well. Check out harmony-central.com for reviews of everything ever made to do with guitars

Re: Distortion pedals...

Man, I`m having the same probs.....just had and got rid of a Pod, great sounds...but its not the distortion its more the tone and response of both the pedals and the amp that`ll also lead to a great tone. I just got a Marshall AVT100 combo and it rocks for rock tones but metal? Fraid not. I`m personally seraching for something to give me a carcass crunch...the best iv`e ever had was a Zoom 707 pedal with a DOD 7 band eq to sort it out and scoop even more...the pedal has all sorts of cool FX too and a whammy etc, drum machine and speaker emulator. The new marshall has a closed back sound that is perfect for rock n metal.....just need to find that pedal. I`m off hunting....good luck man

Re: Distortion pedals...

I just found this page, but I'd reccommend the ProCo Rat. It's got a very wide range of sounds, and should be able to provide the tone you're looking for.

How do they work?

If anyone knows how they work...email me at [email protected]

Re: Distortion pedals...

look ekam ham or what ever ur name is dan electros are the best.buy one and ull see

Re: Distortion pedals...

If your looking for a good distortion pedal, you
should definately give the Jackhammer a try. It is made by Marshall and gives you the most intense metal sound. You can fine tune it to sound like bands from Van Halen to Megadeth to Godsmack. It is all metal, which means you aren't going to break the knobs, and it costs a reasonable price.
