Fender Modern Player Starcaster

Fender expands its affordable Modern Player series by bringing back the offset semi-hollow Starcaster design.

Fender Starcaster

This reissue is based on the rarely seen model that first appeared in the mid ’70s, it does have some notable changes but it retains the original Starcaster’s overall look.

The Starcaster was first offered by Fender to compete against the popular semi-hollow and humbucker equipped guitars from rival companies. Obviously, it was unsuccessful in accomplishing what it was meant to do, and was discontinued earlier than anticipated. Incidentally, the guitar was able to capture the interest of players that are simply looking for fresh designs from the company.

Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood was often seen using a Starcaster, he along with other Starcaster slingers have helped turn the discontinued model into a somewhat collectible instrument.

Now Fender is giving the Starcaster design the second chance it deserves, and this time they may have finally hit the spot by highlighting the guitar as a cool and unique looking Fender instrument, rather than a direct competitor to classic semi-hollow models like the ES-335.

The guitar features a semi-hollow body made from laminated maple and features an alder center block. It has a modern offset-waist shape that is contrasted by traditional looking pair of f holes. The top, back and f-holes are bound to emphasized this melding of old and new designs.

The neck of the guitar is carved from maple, featuring a “C” shape profile with a scale length of 25.5″. Fingerboard radius is 9.5″ and 22 medium jumbo frets run along the guitar’s maple fretboard. Unlike the original, this Modern Player version sports a 4-bolt neck plate, which improves neck and body stability and reliability. This re-issue faithfully follows the original Starcaster’s headstock shape, featuring a distinctive black accent stripe.

Giving the guitar its unique tonality are two Fender Wide Range Humbucking pickups, with independent controls for the volume and tone of each pickup. The four knobs feature a skirted amp-like look that adds to the retro appeal of the instrument. A 3 way toggle switch is provided, located below the black 3-ply pickguard.

The original Starcaster features a string-through-body bridge, but Fender decided to equip the reissue with a straightforward tune-o-matic bridge and stop tailpiece. All the metal hardware are finished in chrome.

The 2013 Starcaster is currently available in three finishes – black, natural and aged cherry burst. It is currently being sold online with a tag price of $899. You can get the complete specs, latest price and user reviews at Amazon.com.
