The manual is on the mesa site.

: My mark is a good sounding amp that I got a hold of from a guy getting rid of it. Its sounds sweet, there is a whole deal of different inputs in the back of the amp, but I dont know what they do. I dont even know if the speaker jack is pluged into the right input. I heard there are different ohms setting in each input. There are two right next to each other. There arent any discriptions anywhere. I heard there was several different versions of the 1978 MArk 1. My mark 1 has the EQ, no reverb, no presence, volumes 1 and 2, 2 inputs in the front, 60 rms/100rms switch. I asked mesa boogie for the manual and all they sent me was a maintnance guid just in case it broke down. Dosnt really say what everything does. Would really appreciate the help. Thanx, Will

: I would stay away from Crate amps in general, they are not very good amps( reliability, performance, TONE!!..). Even with the tube emulation circuitry, it’s not going to even come close to the real thing. Even though it sounds like a good deal with the built-in effects and all, you will probably be disappointed with the quality of the effects. And, since you play small gigs 120 watts will probably be too much. Try looking at the Fender Hot Rod series, they are great amps. They have great tone( they are all tube) and they are very versatile. They average 40-60W RMS but they are a very loud 40-60 watts. They are just better amps than the Crate’s. I think you would be happier with the quality you would get in the Fender.

we all wonder who the best rock guitarist is??? simply you ave Van-H, Zakk Wylde, Randy Roads, Toni Iommi, Kirk Hammett, James Hetfeild, Satriani, Vai, Hendrix. my choice would be Van-H, zakk Wylde and Randy Roads who sadly died. But somewhere in the world sitting at home is someone who is better that all these, as guitaring is just a hobbie and will not take it up as a profecinal carier!!!!!!!!!!!

there is a best guitarist, he comes with all the capabilities and style of playing, his qualities are recognisable to steve vai, joe satriani, stevie ray vaughn, jeff healy, v-h, the list goes on and on, but all you have to do just ask him to play any song and he will, that guitarist is unknown and always will be, he is just some guy with his guitar and his amp making it work in his bedroom.

I have a FG-300 that I bought in 1971 in Baltimore for 50. I’m not particularly interested in selling it because it sounds so good, but I would be interested in knowing what it’s worth these days, and why you’re looking for a 30-year-old Yamaha guitar.
: I’m looking for a Yamaha FG 300 guitar in good condition. This instrument was made in the 60s and sold for about 10 to 20 at that time. I don’t know when Yamaha quite making them. Please respond with price if interested in selling. I would also like to get an original case.

The Parker is truly a great guitar. They play and sound very similar to a Fender. One of the things I like about them is that they are very versatile, which is partly why they can be compared to the Strat. What makes them (dare I say) better is that they also have piezos on the bridge to offer an accoustic sound. (There’s the whole steroe deal, so you can play two different sound through two different amps). But you’re not restricted to using the piezos just for the acoustic sound. Since they don’t produce feedback like a regular acoustic, you can play through and electric amp. In fact, you can combine both the magnetic pickups with the piezos to get a wide variety of sound. You can find more about how to do this by visiting the parkerguitars.com site and looking under the section "Benefits and Applications of a Mag/Piezo System."

This argument has been going on for a long while, but for me there is no doubt that Hendrix is the ultimate guitarist,he was so far ahead of his time we still ain’t cought up with him yet,Page follows a very close second with solos like the since i’ve been loving you, youcan’t argue,i would say Eric clapton would be 3rd,with Steve Vai and Slash following.

Hey, I know your problem. Why should we pay for playing music? Music is the finest art! Here is my advice: 1) download GP3(full version) 2) fill in this username: HASAN OZDEMIR 3) and this key: 10542-84669-82000 It worked with me! IF it works, can you please give me some sites on which I can find a shitload of GP files like of Metallica and other rockbands? I especially need the song Breadfan. Thanks!

: Hmm.Alico pickups tend to be bright and hot, depending on model.Don’t know much about the 450’s,but the Lawrence 550’s are razor-sharp!You might want to check the Duncan JB(SH-4),Seth Lovers or Classic 57’s.I would’nt get anything too hot for classic tone.13.5-15 ohms should do it.
      : Good Luck

I have a Rio Grande bbq nickel covered bucker. Kick but! I have a solid mahogany Cort Les Paul copy. This is an overwound pickup with more emphasis on the mids and lows. It is a hot vintage sounding pickup. Maybe you can compare it to a 57 classic plus. All I know is it kicks!

: Richie Sambora, Steve Vai, George Lynch.

: those three are the best…..they have technique, emotion, and everything that others aspire to be.

Vai has the emotion of a teabag! I saw him at the Ent Cent in Sydney with David Lee Roth. Vai is a wanker with lightning fast fingers but not a clue how to use them properly. Satriani is better if you like the warp speed style.

Gimme Eddie Van Halen, Gary Moore and Steve Morse ANY DAY!

      ZOOM GFX-707 Effects Processor Reviews

      ——————————————————————————–

      ZOOM gfx 707

      Effects Pedals / Processors

I had already owned the zoom 505, but I was looking for an accent pedal when ZOOM came out with the 707. I traded in my 505 and paid another 00.00 CDN.This unit is GREAT for me. I can program sounds for any of the types of music I like to play. The amp selector works great for tweeking those sounds. Its fairly easy to program. The drum machine is a great bonus. The AC adapter is crap. The cord is too short. It creates some annoying noises.Don’t buy the one supplied, go to RADIO SHACK, they can set you up. For the price this baby is well made.I don’t recomend it for your next OZZY tour but for your average garage band or bedroom rocker this unit can’t be beat. I really like it. The GFX 707 is a compact unit that delivers. For the price of one pedal it gives you a hundred. Zoom you’ve done good.

      5 out of 5!

Thanks guys – I have played for a number of years. When I attempt to solo over a song should these be the steps?

      1. find out which chords I am soloing over
      2. work out what the correct scale is to solo over this sequence,
      3. bring in some of my favourite licks and phrases as you guys talk about above? whilst playing within the notes of the scale

If this is correct then I knnow I am confused about which step 2 . Do you guys know of a good site where the links between the chord progressions and scales can be found?

Thanks keep jamming and enjoy yourself

: : Thanks for reading this! I am a good guitar player, however I need a lot of help on my lead playing! What can I practise, or play to get my lead playing up to scrath. Are there any scales, melodies, or tunes that will help me play better? Thanks heaps, if you could site references to books, songs, or web sites I would greatly appreciated it!

      : : Thanks again
      : : Chris.J

: Some people get cynical about the following. Trust me, okay – it’s going to cost you next to nothing.

: Buy a metronome. Electronic or mechanical, it doesnt matter. Yes, I know metronomes aren’t particularly rock n roll – wear a disguise or something when you go into the shop, if you must. Draw up a list of 12 licks that you like. These are little phrases that you’re going to use in your soloing. They may be things you already know, or things you get from a guitar magazine, or things you pick up off a record. Doesn’t matter where they come from, and it deosn’t matter if you play them slightly differently to wherever they came from – you’re coming up with your own stuff here, ultimately. If you don’t have any licks and are completely stuck as to where to start come back to me and I’ll get you started. However you write them down is up to you. You don’t have to use tab or proper notation or anything else – no-one’s going to come and mark this or try and read it. It just has to make sense to you. Okay, so you’ve now got 12 licks. Right, find the fastest metronome setting at which you can play the first lick in time, cleanly, every time without fail. Note it down. Now do the same for the other 11 licks. Now practice all 12 for 2 minutes – time it – every day, 6 days a week (the 7th day rests your fingers). After a couple of weeks you’ll be aware that it feels easier playing these licks and you could play most if not all of them at a slightly higher speed. Fine. Go through them all and find the slightly higher tempo at which you can now play them. How fast you’re aiming for depends on what you want to play. I’m not trying to turn you into some kind of speed demon here. Listen to what you’d like to play and work out what tempo you need to be comfortable at in order to play along. Every couple of weeks, then, you can note down a slightly higher tempo for each of these licks until eventually you can toss any of them into a solo, at full tempo, without thinking about it, playing each of them cleanly every time. Your audeince doesn’t care about the metronome, or about how many times you got them wrong while practising – all they want to hear is those notes flying off your fretboard with absolute confidence when they’re listening/watching. Once you can play any of those licks that well, drop it from your practise schedule and replace it with another one. That way you’re building up your vocabulary of licks all the time.

: I don’t know who you listen to, so I won’t reccomend anyone by name, but if you listen to the people you like you will find that most top guitar players – whether they’ve learned them like this or any other way – do have licks which you find reappearing from time to time.

      : Practice scales as well.

: If you need more help, or clarification on any of the above, come back to me on the forum here. If it sounds too much like hard work then either think again or take up embriodery!!

: Good luck, and have fun.

      : Keith.

: I’ve heard prior to 1993 they were rubbish. Are the new ones good?

The solid state ac30’s dont sound as good. My ac30 tbx reissue sounds better than any new marshall or fender Ive heard. And it seems to be pretty tough. Of course that is my opinion.

: : I’ve heard prior to 1993 they were rubbish. Are the new ones good? I’ve got an AC30 TBR head from about 1990 and it’s great. Sounds just like any other AC30 I’ve heard. I think you really have to use an AC30 with the old blue speakers to really get the most out of it. The difference in sound quality between the blue speakers and the green ones is like the difference between vinyl and CD…. Anyway, the amps before ’93 are ok by me!

I recomend the PSA-1… first it’s analog, the POD is digital (high A/D to D/A, but still…) second, the PSA-1 gives you more room on your rack, for a BBE or Power conditioner, or something. And most important to me, the PSA-1 will let you TAYLOR your sound. It’s presets are as close to the origional as the pod, in my opinion, but the dial allow YOUR presets to be something entirely new. POD doesn’t really allow that.

However, the POD has effects, (not the best but it does have them, the SansAmp doesn’t) it has it’s own foot pedal, if you’re not a MIDI whiz that’s easy to use, and it has an digital out… if those are important to you, keep that in mind. Too me, the PODs biggest seelling point is it’s easy for just about anyone to gab and sound good. (i.e. no thought required) The PSA may take more time, and well need seperate modulation units. I hope my observations helped.

: : Man it is tough to get feedback on this forum. Well, here goes…

: : I am looking for some opinions on the highly praised Sansamp PSA-1 and POD Pro preamps. I have a Johnson Millennium 250W head and though it sounds pretty damn good, I have heard the PSA-1 is simply amazing and that the POD Pro is also superb.

: : Hope to hear from some of you. If you want to hear how my Johnson sounds recorded direct, see my mp3’s at

      : : http://www.geocities.com/b_huether/recordings.html

: : Lots of people have told me they love the sound I get, but I still think something is missing…hopefully one of these preamps is the answer!!

: I am going to be buying an amp for my guitar. I’m thinking about a Crate GFX 212. Ihas that flexwave thing (Supposed to make it sound like tube amp Does it???) It has 2 12’s and 120 watts and some good effects built in. Are these good? Does anyone know? I play in a band as one of the guitarists. We do small gigs. I think that 120 watts will be good.
      : Amy

I think it is all your prefrence, if you like the amp and the feel then get it, I like Crate I think with all amps they make a "cheap" model and a "good" model if you get a cheap amp, then you get what you pay for and VV. well thats my 2 cents… Good luck!!!

Basically, no one can beat Jimmy Page. Ok maybe Hendrix was more innovative, and Chuck Berry was one of the first, but Page has such diverse talents. He uses all the effects to great use and not forget composing Stairway to heaven and Since i’ve been loving you… the best piece of blues music ever. Hendrix is also amazin. Talking more modernly, though, slash is great cos he is also diverse, playing acoustic, electric and doing rock, heavy meatal, blues and even slightly country. For feeling alone, Stevie Ray Vaughan is the best though…just beating Peter Green. But definitely Jimmy Page is the best…anyone who can start a band as amazing as Led Zeppelin is amazing.

: I would like to get my 17 year old son the sound that I could not afford when I was young.
You know the deep, thick, chuncky sound of a Marshall amp. I purchased a Marshall JCM 900
, 50 Watt amp, w/2 GT1275 Celestion speakers but the sound was not quite there. He bough
t a Jackson Preformer and added 3 hot EMG pick-ups but we are not yet there. Now, the Amp
has one blown speaker and my question to you is should I get another GT1275 Celestion for
it, by some HOT other speakers, change tubes, sell the combo and get a halve stack or what? Please send a reply, I’m willing to lose a few bucks to get the sound we want.
      Thanks, for listening, Dave

If you are still interested in transcriptions of "The Thumb" I have two which I got off the ‘net.

: Does anyone have notation or tab on Wes Montgomerys Song ‘The Thumb’, or ‘How Insensitive’. How Insensitive was a Jobim Song, Montgomery did a killer version of it. I have a Great Collection of Artist’s Transcriptions for the Guitar on a wide variety of Artists, If you have what I’m looking for Let’s Trade.

: : I was browsing Napster (shhhh…) for Steve Vai MP3s and I saw one that called Duet by Vai and Malmsteen. I heard it (or rather the first two minutes…it was incomplete). My guess is, Steve was first to go and when the drums kick in Yngwie takes over. No info of such a recording exists on Vai’s site. Do any of you guys know anything about this? I also heard a rumour that Vai gave neoclassical a shot with his rendition of Malmsteen’s Black Star.

: I Did not know That they Played Together myself I mean Who’d of Thought … But why Not They are both masters of Guitar along with Satriani,Nuno Bettencourt, and Steve Stevens. If ANYONE ! , I MEAN EVERYONE ! ANYONE ! OR SOMEONE ! Finds these Recording and they can authenticate it I WANT IT

: Hi. Does anyone have any opinions on the Duo Jet reissues. They don’t seem too cheap, but I love the look of the black duo jets. I have mostly owned and played Fender Teles and Strats, and various Gibsons, and now Hamers. How would the Gretsch compare?

they are wonderful, if they are the japanese ones from the ’90s. i’ve owned several original gretsch guitars and the re-ish is the best overall realization of those designs. as regards comparisons to fenders, etc. the jet have a semi-chambered body and filtertron pickups, and that combination is unlike any other.

Well, I know that they’re impossible to find. Just about 1 1/2 years ago, I was looking at their web page. A friend of mine who owns a small chain of local music stores told me that they’re still in business, but they only deal with major guitar companies. So if I wanted one, I’d have to go and order a custom built guitar from ESP or Jackson. As far as the new system goes, I’ve never heard of them making one other than the one with the cam, or ones that look like a Floyd Rose (ick).

Subject: Make Thousands of Dollars Within Weeks With Only An Initial Investment
      of .00! NEW GUARANTEED METHODS

      Hello, My Friends..

I Found This Mail On A Bulletin Board And Decided To Try It.

You Can Make Thousands Of Dollars Within Weeks With Only An Initial Investment
      Of .00!

So I Thought, "Yeah Right, This Must Be A Scam",
But Like Most Of Us, I Was Curious, So I Kept Reading. Anyway, It Said That You
Send .00 To Each Of The 6 Names And

      Addresses Stated In The Article.
You Then Place Your Own Name And Address At The Bottom Of The List
At #6, And Post The Article To At Least 200 Newsgroups.
(There Are Thousands). No Catch, That Was It. So After Thinking
It Over And Talking To A Few People At First, I Thought About Trying
      It.
I Figured "What Have I Got To Lose Except 6 Stamps And .00,
      Right?".
Then, I Invested The Measly .00.

Well, GUESS WHAT!!!! Within 7 Days,
I Started Getting Money In The Mail!!!
I Was Shocked. I Figured It Would End Soon, But The Money
Just Kept Coming In. In My First Week, I Made About 5.00.
By The End Of The Second Week,I Had Made A Total Of Over 000.00!!
In The Third Week, I Had Over 0,000 And Its Still Growing. This Is Now My
Forth Week And I Have Made A Total Of Just

Over 2,000 And Its Still Coming In Rapidly. Its Certainly Worth .00 And 6
Stamps, I’ve Spent More Than That On The

      Lottery!!

Sure You Print A Copy Of This Article

NOW, So You Can Get The Information From It As You Need It. I Promise You That

STEP 1:Get 6 Separate Pieces Of Paper And Write The Following On Each Piece Of
      Paper:
"PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR MAILING LIST". Now Get 6 US .00 Bills And Place ONE
Inside Each Of The 6 Pieces Of Paper So

The Bill Will Not Be Seen Through The Envelope (To Prevent Thievery). Next,
Place One Paper Inside EACH Of The 6

Envelopes And Seal Them. MAKE SURE
THERE IS ENOUGH POSTAGE ON YOUR ENVELOPES.

You Should Now Have 6 Sealed Envelopes, Each With A Piece Of Paper
Stating The Above Phrase, Your Name And Address, And A .00 Bill.

Us, I Was A Little Skeptical And A Little

Worried About The Legal Aspects Of It All.

So I Checked It Out With The US Post Office (1-800-725-2161)And
They Confirmed It Is Indeed Legal! Mail The Six Envelopes To The
      Following Addresses:

#6) Au Tat Fung, Rm 24A, Gosse Building, 2 Highgate Street, Fullarton, Adelaide, S.A. 5063, Australia.

Move The Other Names Up (6 Becomes 5, 5 Becomes 4, Etc…) And Add

aHHHHH that is not true Kahler still makes trems, and yes you can still get parts. However I do not know if they have a web-site, go to a local guitar shop/builder and they should be able to stear you in the right direction. Or call Hoffman guitars in Mpls andtalk to Ron. I was supprised to find out they were still going myself. But if you notice there is a couple of guitar manufacture’s such as Jackson that are offering there trems (kahler pro) again. I have there phone number somewhere.

Yes, you can. The only thing you’ll have to do is to plug your guitar in the input of the sound card, your sound card may have two inputs. You can use both. After that you can use the controls of the sound card (or Windows) to graduate the volume (Start/Programs/Accessories/entertainment/Volume Control).

      : Ok…
      : Here’s my question :

: Can u plug an electric guitar into a computer, if u dont have an amplifier.
: And use the computers proccessor and speakers to get the sound !?!? I need to know….coz i dont have an amp…..cant find one…..and want to buy a guitar…

      : Just wonderin’….

Had one a couple years back. Put it on my Ibanez. They have a stopping point in the middle that you can feel when you play. Its supposed to be the nuetral stop. I like playing with a little vibrato from my wang bar and the trem-setter made that feel like I was fighting it.
I found out that my tuning problems were due to the fact that my trem springs were old and my nut was moving around.
My new yamaha has a floyd that I almost NEVER tune.
Throw it in the car, go to the gig and it is still in tune. It can even handle wang bar drops to the point where the strings are flapping.

: That’s a tough question. Gibson really made some crap, starting in the ’70’s. But the SG is such an easy axe to make, maybe they didn’t screw that one up. Have you played it? How do YOU like it? You can always change the pups.If the neck is STRAIGHT,if it’s been played a LOT,it "might" be a decent value at 00.

Hi Jaterz, Thanks for the insight. I actually own the D-18V you mention. And I love it. The problem I’m trying to solve is this: I want a darker sounding guitar that isn’t as airy and dry sounding as the mohogany guitar is.
There is some debate about the scalloped braces in the HD-28 creating overtones that are offensive to certain tastes. The D-28 crowd seems to think that the D’s lack of overtones is better. (And sounds better in a group.)
I know I’m probably splitting hairs, but that’s where I’m at.

Both guitars are great. The HD has herringbone inlay. It is a more "fancy" guitar than the plain D-28. I have played several of each model. They all have sounded a little different. A D-28 at one store will sound different than a D-28 from another store.
I also recently played a new D-18V the "V" for vintage style X bracing. It sounded better than the HD-28 next to it. You will have to play a few to find one that has the sound your looking for. You should know it when you play it. )I own two Martins and they’re both great.

Does it buzz the whole way along the fretboard, or on one particular place? On all strings? Are the strings you have installed the same gauge as before? Does the neck look straight, convex or concave as you look along it? Is it playing in tune along the whole neck?

I have a ESP LTD MH-300 w/ a floyd rose licensed (obviously) and i just changed the strings. the tremolo angle is perfect. i don’t have any twang or fret buzz when i play open strings. but when i play any fretted notes i get a twang/fret buzz. it was not like this before i changed the strings. is there any way to fix this without having high action? and why is the twang only on the fretted notes and not on open strings? thanks

A site has been setup for Tokai guitar owners to add the details of their fine instruments to help shed light on what features were produced on what models during what years. There is little decent Tokai info on the Internet and subsequently a lot of people what to know how old their Tokai might be. The database is for old as well as new models so if you have one of these beauties then pay a visit and type your details in at… http://www.cullenracing.com/tokai/frameset.html

Is there a really strong string out there that is able to resist corrosion better or some sort of special cleaner.please help.–Sweaty Palms Is it always the same string, or are you breaking different ones? It sounds to me like there maybe a little burr – you know, a little rough edge to the metal – on your bridge. I don’t think you’re going to get anywhere looking for extra-strong strings – I’ve certainly never heard of any. Could you borrow a guitar for a while and see if the same problem occurs with that one? Then you’ll know if its your guitar rather than the strings. A guitar tech could probably file the bridge smooth for you, if you weren’t comfortable doing it yourself You could replace it, but that would obviously be a more expensive option.

I have to disagree about the acoustic being the way for a starter. Remember how sore your fingers were when you started playing? Electrics are so much easier for a beginner to play. Easier on your fingers.
On top of all that, most "starter" acoustics are horrible to play.

      Just my 2 cents

: If I could make a suggestion stay with the acoustic for a while I know it is tempting to want to go electric, but the basics are better learned on an acoustic. You can move to an electric later on, and by all means get a good quality guitar to learn with. Others may tell go cheap because if you don’t continue playing you will have not invested much, so no big loss.

I play the magnetic pick-ups through a Line 6 Flextone II which by itself is a real kicker, and I send the Accoustic side through a Gallien Kruger Guitar Amp with a Yamaha 4×10 Cabinet. If I can solve my unravelling problem and decide to go ahead with the heavier gauge strings, I’ll need to widen the string slots in the nut so they will accept them… one problem after another! The nut looks like it won’t fit much heavier than .009-.046…

: if its unraveling at the bead why would you need to file the nut? maybe the problem is down there on the guitar.

: : First, be sure you want to use these gauge strings for a long time before filing the nut, cause if you don’t like the new strings, you’ll need a new nut. I would have a tech set your guitar up. not only will the nut have to be filed, but you will need your guitar strobe tuned with the new gauge strings. Good luck.

I have one in my Jackson Soloist. It does stabilize the tuning. The only thing bad that I can say is that it also tightens up the whammy bar so you have to use more effort. It is a trade off. If you bash a lot of chords rather than pure lead playing it is definately a good product.

The concept is simple there are mutiple effect that can be set up and stored and used at the touch of a pedal, the problem is there is a half inch thick tech manul that you need to know first and it is like reading, well a multi effects manual. Don’t fret, play with the thing, expierment with it you really can’t hurt it so try to take it piece by piece, little by little rather than trying to learn everything at once. I have not played with the RP2000, but have used the Boss GT-3 and other multi efects systems and the same applies "Learn by Doing" and don’t be affraid to expierment.

Your best bet would be to go to a music store and try out as many guitars as you can (in your price range) and then decide. I say "in your price range" because if you pick up an expensive guitar most likely you will not be able to put it down and then you will find that nothing that is affordable to you will ever play as good. (I am assuming you are not a rich millionaire and can afford to buy a guitar that costs several thousand dollars…sorry if I am wrong). Start with somethimg simple. I would suggest a Fender Mexican Strat. They are good first electric guitars. They are well-made and play pretty good. They have a pretty good tone too. Those will cost around 50-400. I hope this helps, Good luck!!!

The best thing is to go out and play as many different types and choose what feels right to you. One bit of advice regardless of which type you get it is well advised to get a good quality guitar, don’t get a cheap knockoff and don’t be afarid to play guitars that are out of your price range this is a good thing to do then you will have an idea of what a real quality guitar feels like vs. a cheap guitar.

      Good Luck

Do you mean Lynch’s "Will Work For Food" new release? I got it yesterday. It’s really cool- some very wild playing. My one complaint would be that he plays most of his cover songs note for note- the only things he adds different from the original versions are the solos, and some of those are note for note with the original too. I’d like to see George get a little more free and let loose.

God I hope not! I’d suggest having a guitar tech take a look at it and see what s/he thinks. It may well be that your guitar was indeed desinged with far lighter strings in mind, but that would surprise me. How about dropping to 12s or even 11s instead? Presumably you’re planning to play the 13s dropped a tone (or semi-tone)? You mmight find that 11s or 12s at normal pitch give you a good tone with less hassle, and you don’t need to remember your chords are in different places when you’re jamming with people, which was the reason I eventually gave up on dropped tuning. Good luck, anyway.

Well I just recently got my Digitech RP2000, and I think its great. I’m probably not as advanced as i should be to be using such an advanced piece of equipment, but regardless….

I dont really know much about the effects and parameters. I have a general idea, but alot of it confuses me. I was wondering if any other rp2000 users out there could help me out with it

For that kind of tone I would go for the Marshall. It will give you the great beefy tone that Jimmy Page and Joe Perry use. Also, add some more gain and you can pull off the Hetfield and Hammet tones. But, since you have a Strat copy you won’t get as much of the low-end growl that a Les Paul can produce. But, the Marshall will get you started in the right direction. Good luck, I hope this helps!!!

      : Happy Holidays Everyone,

: I’ve been playing guitar for over a decade now, and I’m still completely ignorant when it comes to buying new gear. The time has come for me to make several major purchases, and I could really use some advice. As you all know, trying gear out in the store is next to useless because every piece of the chain influences your sound… so I could really use some suggestions on the following items:

: Oh, let me preface this by mentioning that I play mostly power/prog metal (e.g. spiral architect, dream theater, nevermore), and am looking for gear that suits this style.

: (1) ELECTRIC GUITAR: Since around 1990 I’ve been using an Alvarez Dana Scoop. I’m debating whether I should install new pickups or buy a new guitar. Any suggestions as to which route I should take? What are the best pickups for the job? What are the best guitars for power/prog in the 00-300 price range?

: (2) HALF-STACK: I’ve been using a Crate GX212 for practice, but its clear that I’m going to need something more powerful (and with a better sound) for live shows. I don’t want to bankrupt myself, but I also don’t want to skimp on my purchase and regret it for years to come… so I’d really appreciate some suggestions on what the best gear would be in terms of value/quality.

: (3) ELECTRIC/ACOUSTIC CLASSICAL: I’d also appreciate some advice on the best models of electric/acoustic classical under 00.

      : Many thanks!!

i wouldnt bother with new pickups. i would go find a another guitar you might like. depends on the monsy you have to spend on what though. marshalls are good (mostly) ….mesa boogie (my personal fav) i played some johnsons that were nice if you want to go with the modeling thing. all the effects are right there in the amp. check out acoustic/electrics on a website like musicans friend or something. Just about all the brands have them now. : : Happy Holidays Everyone, : : I’ve been playing guitar for over a decade now, and I’m still completely ignorant when it comes to buying new gear. Hmm.Pickups)For Metal I’d go with the PAF pro D’marzio,
or Seymore Duncan SH-5 or SH-6.If you like active stuff
maybe the EMG humbuckers. It’ll roast your amp.Carvin
      M-22’s are very good.
HALF STACK)Don’t know much about those.I’d use a combo
or single speaker amp for mobility. The Fender HOT ROD
Deville seem good.Played on one Christmas eve.Oh yeah,
Carvin stuff(older)is very good.Marshalls are good.
      Guitars)I love the ESP’s.MH-300,have easy action,small
neck width,24 frets, locking trem. The pickups aren’t bad.
      Acoustic/Electric)Played a Takamine,very nice!
Those are some of my personal choices, but take your time and try many things.

Kahler no longer makes tremolo parts. They now make golf equipment. A few months ago I had an internet buddy go to their current factory in California. They can no longer make replacement parts due to a court order due to a battle with Floyd Rose. Your best bet is to contact dealers at guitar shows or check on lin auctions such as ebay. Parts are scarce.

Strobe tuning is where your guitar is adjusted to where an open high E, for example, will sound exactly the same as a fretted high E and a harmonic high E. What I mean is that none of the notes will be sharp or flat of each other. In other words, your guitar will be in tune with itself. A pro will adjust the saddles on your bridge forward or backward on all 6 strings to achieve this. All of your chords and notes will be in tune. Since it sounds like you have never had this done, strobe tuning would be a good investment. Ask around to see which guitar tech is good in your area.
      Good luck.

I play more blues myself, but I read Jaterz’s answer and thought I’d add a bit, regarding pick-ups.

I’d often wondered a bit abourt changing pick-ups, and about whether it was worth it, and ultimately just left my guitars as they were. Recently, though, I built an all-mahognay double-cutaway thing a bit like a Gibson SG. I researched pick-ups a bit and settled on Seymour Duncans. Welll, the sound of this thing is stunning, and Im sure that’s down more to Mr Duncan’s pick-up building than my guitar building. The clarity on chords, and the depth of each note you play is wonderful. Anyway I researched a few pick-up makes at the teim, and got their catalogues and so on. Rightly or wrongly, I got the impression that Di Marzios are aimed more at rock performers than Seymour Duncans were. They had people like Steve Vai, Blues Saraceno, Yngwie Malmsteen and others whose names escape me right now. Anyway, if you’re considering pick-ups you might want to take a look at both catalogues. I found them interesting just for the background information. Try their websites?

I have been an owner of a Dana scoop since 94. I bought it because I loved the design, it plays incredibly and Alvarez is a trustworthy name. Little did I know the $500 I spent nine years ago would be a good investment as well. There are a number of people out there that will pay in excess of $700 for a scoop in good condition. Your best bet in my opinion is to leave the scoop alone and buy yourself another guitar. Fenders took a long time to beccome classics and with the average price of a nine year old scoop still above the original price I would say that you and I both have treasures on our hands! Enjoy your guitar, play it lovingly and hard like it was ment to be played but most importantly, don’t change it! Christian Koonz of One Intent

Try a few – in a shop, or guitars belonging to friends. I know its difficult when you don’t really know what you’re looking for, but you’ll probably still find some nicer than others, even if you can’t put your finger on what it is exactly. It doesn’t matter what it is about them, really, as its all so subjective anyway. So long as you don’t buy the absolute cheapest thing you can find you’ll probably come up with something that’s okay for learning on. You should find that any decent music shop will give you a bit of advice anyway. If in the future you begin to take it very seriously then you might want to trade up, but that’s probably a long way off and I don’t think that should guide your choice right now (unless you’ve won a lottery recently in which case buy what you like – I’d love a Paul Reed Smith, while you’re there) Good luck, and have fun.

There are countless guitar players out there. There are so many players with different styles
and techniques and 98% we will never hear. What I mean is that some of the best musicians
in the world are working people who never made a dime off their music. I believe that it’s impossible
to name any one great guitarists just for that reason. There are so many and it we wouldn’t
be able to hear them all. Of course I have favorites though, such as Santana, Stephen Stills,
Stevie Ray, Walter Becker, George Harrison, and countless others. But I don’t believe that it’s fair to name any
      one greatest player.

The GFX 15 is a fine amp for in home use or very very light gigging. I enjoy the way mine sounds.
It is capable of very sought after tones from clean ot overdriven. Crate has a nice sounding
overdrive. Also, the effects sound good, too. It is a good value and I would recommend it
for low volume applications. If you would like to use it at shows you could mike it through
your mixer. I’ve done that and it sounds very good. Anyway it’s a good amp and I like mine
very much. Hope this is helpful!!!!

      1) If your happy with your electric, keep it. You can vastly improve your sound with good pick ups or with just an amp change. I don’t have any great advice on pick ups, (maybe someone else does)so I’ll go on to amps.

2)am familiar with your Crate amp. I have never liked the way they sound. not very natural. The music store I go to all the time lets me try out gear at home for a week or so before buying it. Any good store will do the same for you if you give them a credit card #. If you do business with the same store all the time like I do, they just let me walk out with what I want to try with a signature. I tried about 6 amps before settling on one. Everyone has a different opinion on amps, just pick one that sounds great with your guitar and your style. As far as more powerful, are you not running through a PA? Are you using your amp as a monitor? Last but not least, maybe you need to look into some effects to get the desired sound.
A multi effects unit might do the trick.

3)Acc/Elec. Ovations have always sounded good amplified. Otherwise, if you already have an acoustic, buy an acoustic pick up, like a Dean Markley sound hole pick up. I’ve had good luck with mine over the years. Spending lots of 4164380 isn’t always the best answer.(it helps though) I’m sure you’ll get lots of other opinions, trust your ear.

Kahler went out of business, then came back in the late 1990’s. They are a very unstable company- I think they make some parts for factory installation. You’re best bet is to buy parts used. Try Ebay or Vintage Guitar magazine classifieds.

Hello, and Happy Holidays to you! If it was my last 0, and 4164380$ was getting tight, I’d think about maintenance. If it’s not a new guitar, think about a fret level and crown, and have your guitar strobe-tuned, for proper intonation. Some players do this themselves, but I’ve seen the joy on the faces of many guitarists that have fresh frets and a strobe-tuned guitar, done by a pro.
Picks, straps, etc. don’t give the satisfaction of a well set up, well tuned guitar. Think about it! Erno

I’ve never used any guitar midi equipment and am thinking about getting a Roland GR-33 or VG-88.Is it possible to detune your guitar on the fly to various tunings like the VG-88 with with a GR-33??? Can you add sampled patches to the GR-33 or create your own sounds or expand the patch library with new sounds in any way? I was wondering if you could add guitar sounds that you liked to the GR-33’s list?
      Thanks from Nick

Fender has an axe dating function at their website. Also, the value is anywhere from 50-50 depending on condition. I sold a vintage MIJ several mos ago for 50.00. It was in mint condition. These are great guitars and are increasing in value.
      Hope this helps.

1: The best nut material is bone (or mother of pearl), but there are perfectly good synthetic substitutes that you can’t effectively tell from bone. The saddle on a resonator guitar is made of wood.

2: The best way to raise the string height is to have a repairman do it…preferably a little bit at both the nut and the saddle. It’s good to set a happy medium on the height of the strings so you can still use it to play regular chords and lead figures now and then.

3: The best gauge string to use on any acoustic is the heaviest that you can stand…the heavier the string, the better the sound (unless you’re talking about a vintage Martin or Gibson flattop…you should have these looked at to make sure you don’t put such a heavy string on it that it injures the guitar), especially on a resonator guitar.

: What is the best material for resonator guitar Nuts and bridges?

There are too many known greats to mention each with slightly different styles that make them unique. What makes them the best? the most imitated? most listened to? most influential? most notes in one beat? most technical? best with a pick? best fingerstyle? I could go on

Of all the greats mentioned I can’t believe the man who said "You don’t work a guitar, you play it." was left out. That’s right -Les Paul.

If I could make a suggestion stay with the acoustic for a while I know it is tempting to want to go electric, but the basics are better learned on an acoustic. You can move to an electric later on, and by all means get a good quality guitar to learn with. Others may tell go cheap because if you don’t continue playing you will have not invested much, so no big loss.

If you buy a quality guitar it will hold it’s value and you can always sell it and get back most of what you paid for it if you lose interest, but if you continue to play you will have a quality guitar for many years.

Many new guitar players get discouraged and quit because their guitar is cheap, it sounds cheap and hard to play and it is frustrating. I don’t know about the guitar you have, but you can usually find more about it either on forums such as this or at your local music store, anyway that’s my advice keep on playing and

      Phil,

I have been playing a strat and I am a devoted strat player, but I have come across some guitars, which are strat type guitars, but are way more awesome and the quality is comparable to a PRS. They are made by Gerard MeLancon and the classic strat version is a little more than 00.00, but it is well worth it. Check it out for yourself go to http://www.malenconfourm.com.

: PLEASE HELP I CAN TUNE ANY 6 STRING BY EAR,
      : B..U..T.. I PUT NEW STRINGS ON A OLD 12-STRING
: AND I CANNOT FIGURE OUT HOW TO TUNE THE MELODY
      : STRINGS ANY HELP!!!!

Tuning – as per the other answer. You might want to think a little about arranging the pairs, though. Traditionally, the thin string of each pair goes on top, so that you hit it first on a downstroke with a pick. If the thin string was underneath it would be in the shadow of the thicker string, and you wouldn’t actually hit it. If you finger-pick, on the other hand (no pun intended!), you might decide that the above is fine for the bass E, A & D strings, but that for the G you want the thin string below the thicker string, so that you catch it with your finger on an upstroke motion. That’s how I have mine strung, as I hardly ever play my 12 anything other than fingerstyle, even though I primarily use a pick for 6-strings, both acoustic and electric. Don’t know why, really, but there you go. You might also want to think about open tunings, as they use a lot of open strings which allows a 12-string to really show itself off. I have my 12 tuned to open D and it sounds great.

: : Personally, it all depends on what type music you intend to play. If it’s bluesy music, I’d go with the telecaster, but if you want to play rock, go with the stratocaster.

: how ignorant can you be? take a look around and see how manby great blues players use strats…its the sound you are looking for that matters. SRV played some good blues and he played a Strat. Is Stairway to Heaven a rock tune? Page played a telecaster through most of it. SO much for your stupid theory.

Are you sure you are using it right? If you push it toward the body of the guitar it will work. But if you do everything right and it still doesn’t work, take it back to where it was bought and tell the repair tech to fix it.

In answer to your first question, there is really nothing to "know" when buying an acoustic ( I assume it is your first guitar ).It’s all about what you like and what feels good to you. Please DO NOT buy it on-line, play it first, play as many as you can. Don’t let someone play it for you. What is good to them may not be good to you. Don’t worry if you don’t know how to play any chords, just start strumming. If it feels good to you and you like the tone of the guitar then that is the one for you. Also, try not to buy the cheapest one you find, buy a middle-of-the-road model (if you can). It will save you time and a lot of frustration down the road.Good luck, I hope this helps! If you have anymore questions, please ask!!!

First, what kind of guitar do you have? Second, what sound are you going for? Knowing the answers to these questions will greatly help you out. If you don’t know what sound you want, try taking your guitar to a music store and play each amp (preferably side by side) and whichever you like best… buy it. I hope this helps.

To the last poster: You’re wrong! There were 2 issues of the bullet bass, the standard and the deluxe. The deluxe is different it has rounded covered pickups and is usually found in 3 tone cherry sunburtst with the Fender "F" plate on the back… If that is your bass you could probably sell it for 300-400 bucks, if not you’ve got a POS and you should break it.

Basically, you described the differences yourself. The Standard doesn’t have the features you described, except for the body and neck woods. You are right the Standard isn’t made anymore Fender replaced them just this year with thw American Series. But, it’s a great guitar, if you really want it, buy it! It will not let you down.

are you talking about the Strat Plus? the things you described are whats different about it. 900 is too much if its only a strat plus. but there was a strat plau deluxe and the strat plus ultra. the deluxe isnt even worth 900. the ultra had a maple top…maybe its worth 900. the deluxe goes for 700 at most. so it depens just what model of the strat plus you are talking about.

playing what they can play is no big deal ..what can you create? what new thing have you come up with or are you just a human tape recorder? you probably arent as good as you think you are either. get out in front of people and test yourself you sand crab

: Oh I have to disagree. I can play anything that the famous rock stars play. I can play any classical passage you can name. I have original music that people have told me is brilliant. I’m a very accomplished player, and yet I never had a recording contract or played in front of 60,000 people in a stadium.

: : I don’t believe that is true, i think a person we have never heard of can’t possibly be the greatest rock guitar player! If he or she was the best, then we would have heard of them, right? A person can’t possibly be the best rock player and remain anomymous!

i mostly agree with what this guy said…but i would add that you need to make sure you can play those scales slow first or you will just be a fast sloppy player

: I am only 16 years, and i am in a rock band that also plays in night clubs. Anyway i am quite good on the guitar. I find the most effective practise being hard/difficult licks. If i play easy chord progressions or just simple things i don’t get anywhere except getting stronger fingers! What i do is find something in a magazine that you are very familure with and try and play that. The more familure you are with it the better the practice it will be! If you can’t find any songs then just stick to some reasonbly difficult scales – to play fast that is. If you try and play them fast then you really start to pick up your speed and co-ordination between strings which i think is the best practise you can get! also get into the habit of trying to have a bit of a jam session with your band, because i know when i muck around and play solo’s and stuff, i really start to get a feal for what i’m playing! Therefore your enjoying your guitar and becomming better at improvisation and overall playing. Sometimes you have to play things that are not good sounding tunes but quite difficult to play. Playing difficult tunes is far more effective than repetion! That’s what works for me, give it a try, i think you will start to notice a difference.

: Personally, it all depends on what type music you intend to play. If it’s bluesy music, I’d go with the telecaster, but if you want to play rock, go with the stratocaster.

how ignorant can you be? take a look around and see how manby great blues players use strats…its the sound you are looking for that matters. SRV played some good blues and he played a Strat. Is Stairway to Heaven a rock tune? Page played a telecaster through most of it. SO much for your stupid theory.

I have got a zoom 707 and i find that most of the sounds are good but as it only has two padals it makes live playing very difficult especially after a few beers. The best distortion sound i think is the comp distortion.

: :1st. Tubes only. 2nd,1 amp OR guitar for that matter won’t cover the sounds you listed. For the money,an amp that will give you clean to crunchy/gainy but NOT distorted, get a Soldano Atomic 16. But you’ll need a 2-12/4-12 spkr cab to let the amp open up.It’s a 1-12 combo. I believe you can find new ones for 00ish at places online. Then add a good pedal for the Metallica sound. Good luck.

For all your tones and much more check out Line6! I have a Flextone II XL and I LOVE it. The web site is awsome, you can download tones from a complete library of artists(including several METALLICA tones) and store them in your amp or on your PC.Check out the Flex HD(that’s my next toy),POD,and POD PRO. For the price you can’t get a better sound!
      GOOD LUCK!

I am only 16 years, and i am in a rock band that also plays in night clubs. Anyway i am quite good on the guitar. I find the most effective practise being hard/difficult licks. If i play easy chord progressions or just simple things i don’t get anywhere except getting stronger fingers! Dusty, if you still have your "Fender Bullet Bass" and if it is in good condition, it is worth $250-350. The "bullet bass" was only made for about 2 years. I bought one last November in excellent shape. It is a very under-rated bass, it plays & sounds great. I plan on keeping mine.

I’m thinking about buying this axe. Can anyone tell me anything about the American Standard "Plus" Strat? What makes it different from
a regular American Standard? It has satin-finished tuners (Schaller w/locks) and LSR roller nut.
It has 3 pickups (lace sensors). The body is alder (natural) and the neck
is rosewood. Fender no longer makes the American
Standard (think this one was made in 1997). It’s new,
but is it worth 00? How effective are the features I
described? How much should I pay? Thanks in advance.

: I play in a three piece cover band. Should I go tele or strat for a style that crosses Andy Williams to Lenny Kravitz?

Well, that depends on what you use your guitar for. Right off the bat I’d go for a Strat, because that sound matches Kravitz better than a Tele would, but if you are looking for a bright and twangy sound, and do not need a tremolo, then a Tele would be a better option. Depending on what kind of Strat you get, if its a low end one, the tremolo (after a couple of years) will begin to make tuning your guitar a pain, and will go out of tune very quickly, but if you get a decent strat (Floyd Rose equipped would be good), then you won’t have to worry about that.

My Suggestion would be to go to your guitar store and just play the two types. That’s the best advice I can give you, because that’s the best way to decide. Good Luck, hope this helped a little.

Some people get cynical about the following. Trust me, okay – it’s going to cost you next to nothing.

Buy a metronome.

I don’t know who you listen to, so I won’t reccomend anyone by name, but if you listen to the people you like you will find that most top guitar players – whether they’ve learned them like this or any other way – do have licks which you find reappearing from time to time.

      Practice scales as well.

If you need more help, or clarification on any of the above, come back to me on the forum here. If it sounds too much like hard work then either think again or take up embriodery!!

      Good luck, and have fun.

      Keith.

      : Hello electric guitar experts.

      : Jonathan here from Paksitan.

: Just one question. I have a custom made { Mahogany, Les Paul shaped, beautiful looking solid body electric }.

: Problem is, it sounds very average – poor.

: My question : the pickups that were placed in it are cheap { from Tawain or China }, will buying better quality pickups improve my overall sound through my amp { which is a good quality Marshall } or must I buy a brand new guitar to imporve my sound through the amp ?

: In other words will replacing my pickups improve the sound or does the entire guitar{ wood, body, fretboard etc… have that much of an influence on the overall sound of a electric ? What do you advise me to do ?

: Please help ….. this could cost me hundreds !!

      : Jonathan

I’ve got to echo what everyone else has said. If it sounds good unplugged it should be fine as an electric. If its well made, and you mention its custom built from mahogany, then you’re on the right track to start with. I’d go with pick-ups, but do follow Eddie G’s advice and try and play it through another amp first, and/or another guitar through your own amp, as the problem may be the amp rather than the guitar. I’ve just built a mahogany body guitar myself and I fitted Seymour Duncans to it. The sound is absolutely wonderful. I’d like to flatter myself that my craftsmanship is the key, but I doubt it. It’s the nicest sounding guitar I’ve ever played, and I suspect that’s down to Mr Duncan’s workmanship, rather than mine.

I own 3 PRS guitars – an ‘artist’ grade custom 24, a McCarty and a single cut-away. The custom 24 is very loud, ‘in your face’ type of sound. The McCarty is much more mellow, and the single cut away is more like a les paul. But they all are amazing instruments. The playability and sound are unreal. They are second to none – at whatever price. The only downside is that the bridges on the single cutaway and Mccarty WILL pop high E strings, i believe due to their design. The retailer has replaced 3 bridges for me – and I just popped another string last night. Where the string passes over the bridge gets "burrs", which cut through the strings ( I play .010 eixars ) pretty quickly. The only solution may be to file it smooth, but this will cause the nickle plating on the bridge to eventually flake and chip away. I’m not happy about that at all – but am still working on a solution to otherwise flawless guitars. If anyone from PRS reads this, PLEASE CONTACT ME!

: Is there a good site link for dating guitars and amps (Fender in particular)from the serial number?

A friend of mine found a page on Gibson’s website for dating Gibsons. Perhaps Fender have something similar. Have you looked at their site? Otherwise, you could contact them direct. I own an old Hofner and wrote to Hofner in Germany for details ages ago. They sent back a lovely letter – in a delightful version of English! – giving the date and where it was orginally sold. Perhaps Fender might be able to do the same.

Compared with other tone woods, it still sounded great when I played one at a music store.

      contacts,knowing people and self-sacrifice.It’s a hard road we travel,so going big-time is quite a feat!Also,
if you do make it there are other pitfalls, drugs, women, bad contracts,scum-bag managers and producers.SO if you know these things you’ll try like hell to avoid them. But keep the faith, and make your dream happen!

Could you please tell me the three best pickups on the market and any helpful information you could pass on to me, ie; price, where I can buy one and any technical info. you might have. thank you for your time.

I’m trying to identify a pick-up for a resonator my wife has built for me and I contacted Seymour Duncan’s website. Anyway, they very kindly reccomended highlanderpickups.com. Having checked them out they appear to specialise in pick-ups for acoustic instrunments. I figure if a guy at Seymour Duncan will reccomend them they can’t be too bad.

I only know two things about PRSs.

First one. Paul Reed Smith built a prototype guitar with Carlos Santana in mind. He managed to get to meet Santana and asked him to play the guitar to see what he thought. Apparently Santana played it for a while and said yeah, it was pretty good, but this could be better, that ought to be different and so on. Paul Reed Smith goes away and builds another prototype, incorporating the suggestions made by Santana. This was back when Santana had stopped using Les Pauls and was pretty much exclusively playing Yamaha SG3000s. Anyway, a year or so on, Paul has finished his second prototype and he manages to get to see Santana again, after a gig. He reminds Santana of the last time they met, and that Santana suggested various improvements to the guitar. Santan says yeah, he remembers. He has a bit of a play on the new, improved version, and says yes, that’s better. I’ll have six of those. He’s been playing PRSs ever since. The story is true so far as I’m aware. However, I would point out that buying a PRS is not, repeat not, going to make you sound like Carlos Santana. It’s all in the fingers, whatever you’re playing.

My other PRS story. I studied guitar for a while at the Guitar Institute in London. One day I was with a couple of other students in Chandlers guitars in Kew. One of the others asked if he could try out an efffects unit he’s read about in a magazine. The guy gets one out and my friend is looking this unit over while the shop assistant sets up a guitar and amp for him to try it through. My friend’s paying no attention at all to the shop assistant and is concentrating on the effects unit. I, on the other hand, am holding my breath because the guy has picked out an incredibly beautiful PRS for my friend to play through. My friend sits down, still concentrating on the effects unit, takes the guitar across his lap with scarcely a glance and begins to play, footswitching through the effects. After a while he stops and says, ‘Yeah, it’s really nice, but what the hell is this guitar because it is absolutely brilliant to play?!’

Still not going to make you sound like Carlos Santana though.

My guess is that this guitar was strung with .009 gauge strings. you will want to use those again (if you want a heavier gauge string that requires some adjustments to the bridge and on a Floyd making adjustments is not fun!!). As far as the brand of string, it’s all about what you prefer. On an Ibanez i’ve found that the GHS Boomers sound great, but that’s just my opinion. To change them what you want to do is 1)cut the balls off the end of the strings, 2)insert the end of the string into the bridge( there will be a small screw that you will use to tighten the string in the bridge) tighten the screw. You don’t want it too tight though otherwise the string can break very easily. 3) string the guitar as usual. You will need to tune it a few times once you get the strings on because the bridge has to adjust to the tension of the new strings, this may take a few times. That is really all there is to it. I hope this helps. If it doesn’t, take the guitar to a qualified tech and he will show you how to do it. Good luck.

It really depends on what type of finish you are after. A basic nitro-cellulose lacquer is "sherwin williams gloss finishing lacquer, 24% solids". This is a great clear coat and can be tinted with appropriate dyes for any of a million colors. There are also custom fender colors from "reranch.com" High quality aerosol color matches. About 6.00 a can. Primers are important too…..

The main thing to watch out for in a used guitar is the pickups. If they are ok then that is basically all that matters. Carefully examine the guitar and look for tiny problems like tuners – rusted, or pickup selector swith is rusted or dodgy! If you suspect anything at all is wrong don’t think twice leave it alone! If you are after a new guitar, if you basically looking for a quality guitar then go buy what the salesperson tells you! Ask around what the guitar is like quality etc! If you are interested in tone and sound a lot then go buy your ear! Your ear is the most important deciding factor when choosing the right sounding guitar. You can recognise a bad guitar buy taking a look at it’s hardware. Test it pull it, fiddle with it, see if it is sturdy and solid! The brand name is another vital factor! Usually a good brand will have good guitars. Dodgy brands will have bad guitars! If a guitar (2nd hand) is worn and looks scrapy chances are it will sound and behave scrapy! New guitars are the easiest and safest way to go to ensure quality! But the main rule is "go buy your ear first up, then buy your eyes"

Good luck if you need any more help you know what to do!

i would probably recommend something like a samick. Because these are fairly cheap guitars and will do the job for a learner. However if you spend that tiny bit extra, you can get a great deal! A great sounding guitar that will last you a lot longer! Yamaha has a broad range of "pacifica’s" which are a very good deal! They got voted best guitar under 00. I think they retail at around US30, so i would recommend this guitar for you! There are many other worthwhile guitars out there! But thew main message is look around for a good deal! Take the time to look and be completely sure of what you want before you buy anything!

      Good luck

I kinda agree. Thing is there’s way, WAY more to becoming a great rock guitarist or just guitarist than musical talent, knowledge, skill or soul.

The stuff that has a pretty damn huge impact is people skils and at the higher points looks. It sucks huge horse nuts but thats the way it is, especially these days. Even as close back as the 80’s there was’nt as much focus on looks or pr for guitarists, but now there is, especially for guitarists like vai who’re mainly instrumental. I think it really sucks but i also think that’s why those who we collectively consider great (vai, satch, eddie) are great. Either diliberatly or by accident they have/had the people skills and right look.

And considering all of that, there’s also the fact of being in the right place at the right time. some bedroom guys might be great but never get anywhere publiclly.

So basically there’s saddly more to it than just being a great guitarist.

: I need some of your opinions on why people should play guitar. I really need your help

99.99% of all guitar players are never going to make
a decent living playing guitar so don’t make that your
motivation. You might pick up beer money but usually the
meager pay from bars, lounges, bar mitzvahs etc., barely covers strings and rehearsal time.
There are lots of good reasons to play though:
      -it’s creative
      -it’s relaxing
      -it’s satisfying ( but sometimes frustrating )
      -it’s entertaining ( for others too )
      but mostly
      It’s Fun !!

: I would go for the Fender Jazz. For your situation the Mexi would do just fine, it is pretty similar to the Americans as far as playability and tone. Of coarse the Americans are best but for the money, you can’t beat the Mexi Jazz. If you become the permanent bassist for some reason you’ll probably want to step up to the American but for now the Mexi will be fine. I hope this helps.

Thanks a lot for your advice Phil, I do appreciate
      it.

: how do i setup a floyd rose to C# without fucking up the harmonics???? plz help me..!! First off, what kind of setup do you have (not enough info…) you have to take off the back plate/cover and adjust the spring tension(if you’re dropping down to c#, Oh by the way, are you going to tune to open C#? or just 1/2 down with all strings and then dropped "D" tuning from there?) on my guitar if I look at the side of the floyd rose bridge (with it installed, of course), I can see a little rectangular shape (it’s actually a different metal) I don’t know its purpose other than a gauge to tell you if your spring tension is correct. Look at the rectangle and see if it’s parallel to the top of the guitar, or the pickup next to it, if it is you’re pretty close to proper setting. I don’t think it’s ana exact science, but it oughtta help……..

Oh my god, you want to spend 500? You can get the top of the line professional instrument for that price. You could get a quality American made used one for a few hundred. Don’t get an Ibanez, they are imported junk, new Jacksons are imported unless you custom order one made in the US, and Jacksons these days are junk anyway (IMC bought the company in the late 1980’s). Gibsons are OK if that’s what you like. I don’t care for painted necks and the thick heavy bodies. I used to have a 1978 Gibson SG that played very well. You can get a good USA Fender or a Gibson on Ebay or in a used shop for less than half the price of a new one. If you’re going to spend 500 you could get a new USA Jackson if that’s what you want, or seek out a used one. I play "classic" and "modern" rock and I prefer the old American made Kramers. They are selling for a few hundred dollars these days and they are among the highest quality instruments ever made.

: Does anyone have any good suggestions?
: Preferrebly – Ibanez, Jackson or Gibson.
: I am predominantly more into rock music so a guitar with a tone that sounds good for rock would be good!

get a used one, because new guitars are really a rip off. it’s like buying a brand new car, the value instantly decreases and a good used guitar should last a lifetime. And there are PLENTY of used guitars available for a fraction of the cost of the same guitar new. The other thing is buy an American made instrument. The quality is ten times better, and if you decide to sell it down the road it will hold its value. Imported guitars are usually extremely low quality and have zero resale value.
If possible, play it before you buy it. Even if you’re just starting out and can’t play a chord, just hold it and see if it feels "right." There are tons of shapes and sizes and features, and everyone has a different opinion of what is "the best."

I’m selling an Ibanez Ar250 Artist reissue which is basically a double cutaway Les Paul copy- there in fact was at one point a lawsuit against Ibanez from Gibson- if my sources serve me right- at any rate- I’ve played it no more than 3x-honestly-in my house. the story is- I had another of the same model as my main guitar and a LP Double cutaway- they got stolen so i replaced the Ibanez as I could afford to replace it- Welll after I purchased it- I got my main guitar back. So I have no need for this one anymore- Comes w the case,Straplock and original or dimarzio replacement humbucker and is in brand new condition- 650 + shipping. check the Ibanez Website for pics or my bands page for the guitar I still use under Photos- and the Mindless Self Indulgence Show at Pearl St. Good luck-

It’s whoever you think it is.

I think that R&R has had three transcendant players. By that I mean they made such a mark that their influence is inescapable and inarguable. Not that there aren’t better guitarists from a technical sense, and none of the three are my personal favorites (I like them though), but all of them set the guitar playing world on its collective ear.

      1. Chuck Berry – he invented rock and roll guitar
      2. Jimi Hendrix – he re-invented it
      3. Eddie Van Halen – he made it three dimensional

Now everyone’s gonna say I’ve forgotten whoever their favorite is, but being as this is my opinion not theirs I’ll assume I’m right until proven otherwise (that’s humor, don’t get in an uproar).

My favorites by the way are Keith Richards, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Billy Gibbons, Joe Walsh and Jimmy Page. And about a hundred others.

Jimmy Hendrix and Jimmy Page belong right at the top, but your forgetting a couple great guitarists. Johnny Winter, Rick Derringer and Rory Gallagher can play with the best of them. And don’t forget Eric Clapton.

By that I mean they made such a mark that their influence is inescapable and inarguable. Not that there aren’t better guitarists from a technical sense, and none of the three are my personal favorites (I like them though), but all of them set the guitar playing world on its collective ear. : 1. Chuck Berry – he invented rock and roll guitar : 2. Jimi Hendrix – he re-invented it : 3. Eddie Van Halen – he made it three dimensional : Now everyone’s gonna say I’ve forgotten whoever their favorite is, but being as this is my opinion not theirs I’ll assume I’m right until proven otherwise (that’s humor, don’t get in an uproar). : My favorites by the way are Keith Richards, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Billy Gibbons, Joe Walsh and Jimmy Page. And about a hundred others.

Ithink the best guitarists i have ever heard would have to be one of these three (Jimi, Jimmy, and Eric). There are other good guitarists like (Eddie, Vai, Beck, Rossington from Lynyrd Sknyrd, Thomasson from the Outlaws, Sammy Hagar, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and Zakk Wylde).

As most stated, there are a lot of great guitar players out there. But ask rock guitar instructors at reputable colleges and music programs not "Bob’s Music Store and Guitar School" on the corner by your house and the same few names will keep coming up. The one that will come up the most is Hendrix. Period. Some others with a few surprises. The biggest surprise would problem be Keith Richards. I never thought much about him until I was forced to listen closely. Pretty cool.

I would go for the Fender Jazz.

It’s not a very hard concept at all. Practise all of the scales (major, minor, inversions, etc…)that you know. Be able to play them forward, backwards, even in your sleep. While you are playing them, switch to a different inversion of that scale without thinking about it, this will help greatly! But, that is just the beginning, the main part is to have a good imagination and get to the point were you can play what you hear in your head. A good starter book is the Progressive Series Lead Guitar Book, it will start you off on the right track.

Somebody else pointed it out too: if your guitar sounds good unplugged it should sound good plugged in. The probable culprit of bad tone is cheap pickups assuming the guitar sounds good unplugged. Not all Marshall’s sound that great either though…you should either play what you know is a good sounding guitar through your Marshall, or your guitar through what you know is a good sounding amp to make sure it’s not that.

I’d put my money on it being the pickups before anything else.

: : left-handed, and don’t want to pay extra for a lefty strat) so how do i go
: : about changing the nut around…Or do i even have to do that (meaning that
: : I cut new grooves and make some grooves narrower)??? How did Jimi do it???

: I may be wrong, but I thik Phil’s right – Hendrix simply put the strings on upside down, as it were, and left the guitar otherwise standard.

-I’m not sure if Hendrix reversed the nut but I have read that he wound his own pickups for extra high gain
( Star Spangled Banner sure sounds like it ) and also
tha he bent his whammy bar more so he could get a 2 note " swoop " when he hit it with his wrist ( since the bar is right under his wrist when the guitar is upside down )

: That just means to tune the guitar down a half step. If you have an electronic tuner tune to the E Flat, A Flat, etc.

: If you don’t have a tuner, just drop them down each a half step (starting with the high strings, and checking them against each other)

: Stevie Ray Vaughan pretty much always tuned down a half step, and a lot of the older VH stuff is tuned low like that.

: and don’t forget Hendrix tuned 1/2 step down way back in the 60’s

: today I just bought a 3/4 size guitar. I thought this size would be easier to play because I travel alot and I have small hands. I have tried playing a few chords but some of the strings will not resonate any sound…I have tried making sure every finger does not touch and other strings but this is almost imposible…when I put my finger down on one note and strum it it sounds fine it is just when I am trying to play more than one note at a time…is this just because I am a begininer and I need to work on getting my fingers around the strings or did I buy to little of a guitar?
: If anyone could help me I would really appreciate it!
Hi how are you? Look you might have gone out and bought a Lemon I don’t know. But your not going to get aa quality instrument like a good Acoustic Guitar very cheaply. As an example I own two Acoustics one is an Al Dimeola Signature Series Ovation, the other is a Taylor 710CE, each one cost me over ,500. The idea of buying a quality instrument of the bat is first of all, the heigth of the strings of the fretboard is extremely low, which makes it easier to play, especially for a beginner. I would suggest you trash any notion you may have of reading a chord book and enroll in classes. Do you have a Conservatory of Music where you live? Anything worth doing is worth doing well.

don’t worry too much about it. That happened to all of us at first. Try to focus on keeping your fingers curved so that the tips are coming straight down on the strings. Typically you will find that when you play a single note, the form is fine. But when you switch to a chord, a couple fingers will start to flatten out and will dampen other strings. Practice on simple chords first (e minor, d, a ) once you start getting comfortable with each of these chords try switching between them. I personally play a taylor 710m ce and it is the best guitar I have ever owned! It’s a great guitar to learn with because you don’t have to push down on the strings as hard as the cheaper acoustics. good luck!

: I play lead guitar as well (people say that’s unusual for a girl) and am going to buy an amp. I’ve been borrowing my dad’s. I looked at the Line 6 Spider with it’s floorboard and it seemed good. Does anybody know how good it is. I want effects w/o pedals and this amp seems to have the basics.
      : thanks
: Brenda W. Hi Brenda, My advice to you is get a Marshall that is not noisy. And you’ll eventually discover that certain quality Pedals such as the Replex Tape Simulator are ver cool. I mean your not talking cheap here, this thing is almost 00.00. Voodoo Lab makes a Great Tremolo also. But don’t get a noisy amp, you’ll be sorry later. The idea that no one will be able to hear it when your Playing is nonsense. It’s part of the sound that comes off the stage, and it will certainly show up on tape analog or digital if you ever go into a studio. Good Luck.

: They are all linked with regular cables (be sure they are all shielded cables, if they aren’t you will get some nasty interference). You can either use batteries or connect to a wall outlet. I’ve found that batteries work best, some of the strong tone gets lost when connected to an outlet, (just my opinion). The order doesn’t really matter, it’s pretty much what works for you. Generally you want to put your high gain pedals first (distortions, overdrives, etc…) if you use a compressor, that should go first. then after that it doesn’t matter. But, you’ll want to put your Reverb and Delay pedals last because the idea is to add reverb and delay to the tones created from the other effects in your chain. I hope this helps. Good luck. (In my opinion, switching to stompboxes is a good choice. They are easier to use and adjust and the effect generally sounds better than that in the processor.) I use an SKB Pedal Board, I like the Idea of the Pedal Boards built in DC9V Power Supply, they supply you with barrel to barrel connectors, and L-shaped 1/4 to 1/4 connecting cables. I use an AD-5 Boss, A Voodoo Lab Tremolo, A Boss Compressor, A Morley Volume Pedal, A TC Electronics Stereo Chorus Flanger, The SCF Pedal Doesn’t use an adapter it plugs into a power strip. They also provide you with a roll of tape with a velcro backing so that you can stick it to the board itself. Good Luck.

I use Guitar Studio 2. This may be a late reply but I hope it helps. If using midi sounds doesn’t bother you too much then go for it! I use it all the time. I love it! It’s easy to use because Cakewalk provides tutorials to take to learn how to use it! And once you learn how its easy and loads of fun. You can even produce CD’s with it. There’s a bunch of preset drum tracks or you can use session drummer to create your own. Virtually unlimited undos (great for me!hahaha). My advice it to go for it because it really gets you excited about music and you can get more serious about music. GS2 is great if you don’t have a full band because you can program your own keyboard, strings, pads, etc. using either a staff or a fretboard tool. Also there’s a tuner and plenty of cool effects. Definately look at it.

: I have only ever bought I tab book in my life (the black album) because I could not find accurate tabs on the net! The official transcriptions will save you time and frustration (i know from experience!) Warner Brothers, Hal Leonard, Music Dispatch, Note Music, all of these people have what your looking for. Remember to ask for Artist’s Transcriptions for the Guitar, don’t except anything else. It also cost’s more but it’s worth it, But don’t let reading tab keep you from understanding notation. Good Luck.

I believe that playing a musical Instrument is beneficial. It enhances your capabilities in terms of memory. And it increases your ability as a wage earner. But I also believe that playing and not studying the Greats is a losers attitude. You can’t create music in a total vaccum, someone must inspire you to become great. I also believe that learning how to read music and tab is a must. Backing up a CD a thousand times while trying to figure out a solo of chord pattern is not the smartest think to do. Studying going through books page by page building technique is what you have to do, as well as playing scales. Al Diemeola speaks of Economy of movement, meaning having your finger as close to the string as you can get before striking it. Having your fingers to high off the fretboard is fool’s play. You simply can’t play with speed doing that. Using a Riff Master isn’t a bad idea either, that way you can take a fast solo like George Benson and spread it out and understanding the way the solo is structured on the front middle and end. Playing it at his speed is another problem. All of these Pro’s like Johnson and Benson use the Circle Picking Technique, Without understanding this technique forget about speed picking. It could take years just to learn how to do this. And someday down the road you’ll have a tremendous feeling of accomplishment. And then perhaps you’ll run into a young guy who you can teach. Enhanced memory, ability to turn a profit, satisfaction of accomplishment, along with having pride, and the ability to pass on what you’ve learned is something that I cherish. Remember anything worth doing is worth doing well.

I bought a Taylor 710CE it had a bad Grover Tuner on the G-String. So I decided to buy a new set of Gold Grovers to spruce up the looks a bit, and guess what a bad Grover on the G-String. Quigley’s Music called the Manfacturer and they sent a brand new set out, the new one was put on,no problem. The gear inside felt like it was frozen the key didn’t turn with relative ease like it should have. I’m a person who studies fingerpicking masters like Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed and many others, so I experiment with different tunings such as DADEAD. When I tune the guitar to that particular tuning the Low E vibrates, it’s as if the gear inside the Tuner is not holding the string tight enough. Strange problem is it the Tuner causing the problem which I believe it is, or do I need to buy a more highly priced set of Tuners. Now when I bring the Low E back to pitch it stays in tune. Does anybody have an answer for my problem, if so E-Mail me and let me know. Happy Holiday Season to one and all.

Make sure the grooves are wide enough to allow the string to move freely as you tune. Also, a good trick is to grind up some graphite (lead pencil centre will do) and mix it up with some vaseline. Wack it into the grooves on the nut and bridge. This eliminates the squeeky-gate effect that is all too often blamed on the tuning keys.

Custom shop pickups will definately improve your tone but the interplay with your guitar is critcal. I guess my answer is this, you need a good guitar first then add custom pickups to bring it over the top. Do you have a guitar that sounds good when not plugged in? If so, I think it is a candidate for pickup replacements…..

Hi it sounds like you have pretty good gear, so what you need is an effects pedal! I had the same problem i wanted cool sounding distortion, aswell as reverb, delay, etc. So I decided to go for a Pedal! It sounds like you may only need a specific distortion or metal fuss, grunge pedal? Or the other option is to go for a multi effects pedal! I would recommend this because having a multi – pedal means you have so much to play with! It’s great fun, and so satisfying having heaps of efects! I can recommend many to you just give us an e-mail and I can help you greatly: Just to give you an idea, you can pick up reasonable multi effects units for around 00 – 00. I hope I have managed to be some sort of assistance! From Chris

I would recommend the GT3! I have a GT5 (which is about 00 dearer) Anyway the GT3 is a fabulous effects processor and very cheap for what you are getting! I cannot however compare with the RP2000 because I have not played it, but it sounds to me like you want tone, tone, tone? So then I would recommend the RP2000. The GT3 is loaded with effects! In comparison the RP2000 is loaded with speaker simulatoins, emulators, ETC! The GT3 does however have great tone twitching options but is designed more for effects!

From personal experience, BOSS has to be the best quality of the two,it also is a great deal! I am regretting my dicision to buy the GT5 because the GT3 is basically the same but cheaper! It does more or less exacltly the same thing! Very cheap! Very useful and is jam packed with options!

I hope I have helped you if you want to know more, or have any other queries, I am here for your convenience!

Thanks for reading this!

      Thanks again

Alright, this is the way I did it by myself. I found out that a particularly good artist to learn some awesom solo riffs off is Kirk Hammett. I recommend reading not only "The Art of Kirk Hammett", which gives you many good insights on soloing, but also Metallica 83-88 and Metallica 88-96. These come with cd’s that have the solo’s in slow motion. Also, a subscription to Guitar World is good. There are all kinds of helpful hints and tips from artist like Steve Vai, Kirk, Dimebag Darrel, and many others. I’d say, the most important thing about about learning to lead is patience, and the biggest thing that kills that is tiring warm up sessions. If you’ll do these things, you’ll have shorter warm up sessions that will lead to better practice sessions. First of all, shake your hands rapidly side-to-side and up and down. Then, hold your arms out to the side, level with your shoulders, palms towards the ground. Next, flex your wrists at 90 degree angles to your arms in a slow, up and down motion. After you feel loosened up, Work out the fingers by rapid movements mixed with stretching. DON’T pop your fingers. this will drastically hurt your playing abilities in the future. I hope this helped. Email me if you need more help. Dave

      Hello electric guitar experts.

      Jonathan here from Paksitan.

Just one question. I have a custom made { Mahogany, Les Paul shaped, beautiful looking solid body electric }.

Problem is, it sounds very average – poor.

My question : the pickups that were placed in it are cheap { from Tawain or China }, will buying better quality pickups improve my overall sound through my amp { which is a good quality Marshall } or must I buy a brand new guitar to imporve my sound through the amp ?

In other words will replacing my pickups improve the sound or does the entire guitar{ wood, body, fretboard etc… have that much of an influence on the overall sound of a electric ? What do you advise me to do ?

Please help ….. this could cost me hundreds !!

      Jonathan
