I was on Musician’s Friend and saw models from Dean, Rogue, Takamine, and Ibanez. I know Takamine and Ibanez would offer solid quality and I don’t mind spending a bit more. But would I get comparable quality from a Dean or a Rogue? (I was especially the looking at the Dean Performance model). Any other names I should consider?

Well, now..this is my first look at this site, and as you can see from my "handle", it’s not my real name. Frankly, I’d rather stay anonymous. Am I famous? Well, no, the folks around here wouldn’t know me, because I’m a jazz studio player, and you guys don’t listen to that. Do ya? I didn’t think so. Off the top of my head, I’d estimate there are 40 million guitar players in the US, and most all of them listen to the same six guys. If one of these six "gods" switches from a Fender to a Gibson, watch the Gibson stock go up. I’m not knocking these guys, they’re all good. But don’t you folks get tired of playing the same old licks in the same old "box position" backed by the same old boring power chords? Sorta like Mr Bob, here. He’s obviously a troll who likes to mess you folks and get ya pissed off. So you go on a ride with Bob – up five frets, bend a string, whack the whammy bar..etc. Maybe it’s time to expand your worlds. Say, when’s the last time you listened to Paul Bollenback? Jimmy Bruno? How about Chuck Loeb, or Birelli LaGrene? Oh, I can see you’re nodding off now. Nevermind. Happy playing. : they might have a laugh if boring people like you were not on this site. love Bob

Hi, how do I set up my Laney with the GT-3 correctly? The amp has like millions of effects loops and settings. I want to use the Laney`s distortion and clean channel, and occasionally switch on the modulation effects of the GT-3, so that they are available on BOTH the clean and the overdrive channel of the Laney, and without the GT-3 degrading the signal in any way. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thx.

Ive been playin guitar for 2 years, but I think Im a decent player. Also im in a band, we dont gig much at all, more into our song-writing phase at the moment. Anyway, i play through an old super reverb that i share for the singers vocals, and i want a new amp. I want a new amp, i found a mesa heartbreaker stack for $1700, but is it even worth getting it if ive only been playin a few years. Im a sophomore in HS, and i dont know what the bands gonna do after we graduate either.
-
January 1, 2002 at 4:58 am #88586AnonymousGuest
Super Reverb huh? Why do you want a new amp ? Sounds to me like your singer needs a PA worse than you need an amp. If you want some different sounds, buy some effect pedals its a lot cheaper. Let your singer buy a PA for his vocs.

Washburn AE always seemed a little tinny to me (maybe its just me) As far as buying on line, I’ll give the same advice I gave to "the Dude" regarding a Guild D-25. How Do you know how this guitar is going to play or sound without trying it first ?? You may try two or three of the exact same model, and sometimes you can find one thats just perfect or one that sucks. Hope you don’t get one that sucks. ( I know you can send it back & get another one, but how many times do you want to do this & pay freight ?)Maybe hit a couple of guitar stores first. Good luck

I know that tabs are a simple way of learning to play the gutair but I honestly don’t understand to well how they work can someone help me before I go crazy!!!
-
December 29, 2001 at 9:20 am #88435AnonymousGuest
Guitar World Acoustic has a very neat tab guide in most issues. Tablature typically gives you the notes to play, in order, but usually doesn’t assign time values to the notes. So, a note that should have a time value of an eight note shows the same as a note with a time value of a whole note. It ends up being up to you to be familiar with the song to know the difference. But, GWA has come up with a tab notation that incorporates timing.
-
December 29, 2001 at 1:07 am #88468AnonymousGuest
you’re right, tabs are easy. but everyones gotta learn so here goes. Its easier to learn in person w/ someone teaching you but i’ll see what i can do. First you have 6 horizontal lines that represent the strings on a guitar. the letters on the far left represent the string. i. e. A————————. So that means the a string. Numbers on the line represent what fret you hold on that string. ie A————8———. That means you hold 8th fret on the a string. if they want you to play a chord, it will look like this e—-3 B—-0 G—-0 D—-0 A—-2 E—-3 So that would be a g chord, if you dont understand why, then you’re gonna have to consult someone else. so chords are tabbed in line w/ each other. solos and other riffs where you are not using chords are tabbed progressivly. hope this helps. sean

January 27, 2002 at 10:09 am #90190AnonymousGuest
: Can anyone tell me something about squier guitars, because I want to bue one. What do you think about the tremolo bar? Squire is made by Fender, Japanese or mexican, I bought one in ’81. Maybe different now but it’s basically designed from the Specs of a ’75 strat. The trem is stock, you can add springs in the back to stay in tune and use heavier strings. it will go out of tune anyway. Drop a Floyd in there no wang bar probs. Well, 45 mins to change strings and once you break a string at a gig you better have a back up. If your seriously looking for a lesser expensive quality guiter with trem squire is hard to beat. Look at epiphone they are made under Gibson supervision and the prices have come down for some decent quality.

for someone who gives out advice, you sure are rude. some of the older squire guitars (the japanese ones) are very good, infact a lot better than some american strats i have played, the onlything i have noticed about the american ones is they have much better pickups, which can be replaced easily on the squires. the newer squires, i do agree, are a bit bad and i think i would rather spend my money on a yamaha pacifica (they are excellent for the money). so next time someone asks for advice, try giving it, rather than slagging everything off, you tosser.

i have recently been given this amp off a member of my family (my uncle, who has given up the guitar). he said they are great amps and it should last me a lifetime, well im sure it will, and it sure sounds better than my peavey bandit, but, i dont know anything about this amp, is it rare ? is it expensive ?, my uncle just said (when i asked him these questions) "FORGET ABOUT ALL THAT AND JUST USE IT". so any help much appreciated. geoff

the head you’ve got isn’t exactly rare but don’t ever get rid of it, you’ll have to sell your liver to get another. soldanos are hand made and i think the one you’ve got lists around $3500.00. you won’t find anything better, period. and it will last you a life time because they put a lifetime waranty on the things. you have the best amp money can buy

: I’ve got a stratocaster and I want to take the knobs off and replace them how do I do it? The best way I’ve found is to use a strong piece of twine or leather strip that will squeeze in between the knob and top of guitar then grasp both ends and pull. This will not harm the plastic knob or damage the guitar.

I have a black Ibanez RG 750, I don’t know when it was made, or anything about it. It is in good condition, with a nice hard case. How much is it worth? Can anybody tell me anything about it?
-
February 22, 2002 at 1:29 am #91405AnonymousGuest
It was probably made in Japan in the early ninties… I just bought one of these guitars for 400 dollars, worth depending on condition of course. These guitars are way better than the newer RGs, maybe try selling it on ebay, you could probably get between 350 to 450. I am still trying to figure out if the neck is a wizard 1 or 2… but its a very thin.

crank the mids to 10, low to 4, and highs to 7 or 8, right around in that range you can get an offspring sound. if u want a bit more clarity in the sound, knock the highs up a lil bit more to 8.5 or 9

I recently bought a ’79 Guild X-500. It had a crusty old set of 11-48 (or so) roundwounds. I use D’Addario XL110s (10-46) on my Tele and LP. I put a set on this arch top, and it was horrible. I then broke apart a set of Gibson flats (12-54) and used the 23, 31, and 42 for the D, A, and E. It was unbalanced. The treble strings (from the XL110s) were stiffer by comparison. So I put the treble 3 from a set of XL120s (9s) on it. It was then balanced tension wise, and played almost TOO easy, but it was wimpy sounding. So right now I am using a regular set of Gibson 12-54 flats. It plays good and sounds okay. I would like to go just one step lighter, maybe 11-50. My question here, finally, is this: I put Gibsons on there because that was all I could get locally for flats. What is your experience with Gibson flats, and are there better brands? Specifically, are there other flatwounds which offer a little brighter sound, or are they all as dead as Gibsons? What about GHS’s claims about their Brite-Flats? And what about the Cadillac brands like Pyramid and Thomastik?

Which is the best choice for hard rock/ progressive metal playing- the Marshall DSL 100, TSL 100 ( i know on has more features but there is just something in the simplicity of the dsl compared to the tsl), the 1959 SLP, or a mesa boogie heartbreaker? Thanks for your input Happy Holidays to all steve

Steve, Although, I have not tried a Mesa Heatbreaker, I can give you my opinion on the TSL/DSL. After owning both I would say that if your looking for a better sounding amp go with the DSL. It’s more organic thicker bigger sounding and not as buzzy as the TSL distortion. If you looking for more options then go with the TSL.

Fellow guitarist, I’ve been a rock player for years and found myself in the common "pentatonic rut" that many rock players get stuck in. To break out, I learned the major scale , all modes, inside and out. I’ve decided, since my entire focus is on composing and not playing covers, to actually forget standard chord shapes and names. Instead, I build chords out of the surrounding scale, which opens up alot of creative possibilities. I don’t even care what the chord is named, its relative function, tonality, whatever. Just that it works within the scale and sounds good.I can always figure out what it is for purposes of transcribing. I’ve noticed my chords, melody lines, chord melodioes , and leads all beginning to blend together in a very musical and melodic flow. Before I was stuck playing a chord, then maybe throwing in a riff, then playing more chords, etc. Anyway, this new technique, although having many benifiets, also seems to highlight my lack of knowledge regarding harmonic structures. There seems to be something missing, and I’m guessing if I change keys it will give my playing more harmonic flow. For example, is it common to change keys to follow a progression, like I IV V. If I’m playing C mix, can I change to F mix then G mix? You’re probably wondering why I just don’t experiment, but I was just curious if this is the common method.Or perhaps is it common to just stay in C mix and achieve harmonic flow by focusing around the I, IV, and V within the one scale. One of the reasons I’m alittle confused is that commonly a I,IV, V would be maj, maj, 7th, and if I change keys the V won’t necessarily have that 7th feel. I have written numberous songs already with the new system, and I love the improved flow of my phrasing, but the "overall" flow, or the "song flow" seems a little stiff. Maybe its just because I need more practice with this new approach.Or am I missing the "big picture". Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Doug Oliver

When you speak about fusion, you don’t need to think about cord changings and harmony. you should just play music. Don’t try to brake any borders. It already will be the forced music. Just play what you feel. When you start thinking about C and next step G, you’ll miss the magor thing in music_ space. That’s what fusion needs. I hope my advise will help you. David
-
December 28, 2001 at 1:25 pm #88452AnonymousGuest
your missing the big picture jazz is not about any conventions. Its all about breaking the rules, doing what sounds best. Sure, certain structures and progressions are used comonly, but the mail idea is to break down the barriers. Change modes, do wild shit like going from say c dorian to like c# lochrian. do crazy shit, and see what sounds good.
-
December 25, 2001 at 6:17 am #88273AnonymousGuest
Hmm.I’m not really a Jazz-head but I understand it.Your question is very subjective. It really depends on your taste of harmony and song pallet. However, your new system is actually called arpeggiation! The use of chord tones to develope your melodies. Your song structure may seem stiff because the jazz approach somtimes relies on chord substitutions! That’s a whole other realm and requires study. There are other chords that can be played instead of the 5 chord resolving to the 1 chord. Uhh,instead of thinking about changing from Cmix to Gmix,I find it better to think in terms of area-options! From the Cmix position the other tones you’ll need are probably located in that same area.In the C Lydian or C Locrian. Not to sound arrogant,I could say more, but I usually charge $$$ for this information. However you seem to be on the right path and with a little study your knowledge will increase greatly! Best of Luck and Happy Holidays

Ed, I think you’ve given me a new option that I hadn’t thought of before. To create a melodic "shift" I could just stay in C and try other modes. Also, you mentioned about thge possibility of my method being a little stiff, which it probably would be if I never used filler or outside notes. I just use this "arpegiation" as a foundation ,but then add outside notes, chromatic sequences, and chord subs. With this method, I find that my chord playing has really opened up to some very creative sounding stuff. Lord knows the excact names of the chords I come up with, probably m7sus6#9’s. But by not worrying about using standard chords or progressions it seems to give me more freedom. I guess even the conventional methods allow just as much freedom, its just that this way seems to work best for me, only because I only play my own stuff, don’t play in situations were someone shouts out "invert that CM7#9 to follow the bass line"(for example) and therefore would need to play by the conventional rules. But by using a system with only one rule (use the notes in the scale)it creates some confusion, mainly: How do I create medodic shifts – by shifting the entire scale up , or stay when I’m at and just focus on certian key notes for my phrasing. Thanks for the advice, Doug

Bob, Sounds like you do have some grasp on music. (I’m sure that you will no doubt use the "grasp" conotation in one of your vulgar replies)However…does "your" or "you’re" show possession? Les Paul & Fender hmmmmmmmmmmmm? I feel that BB King (yes I’ve seen him with something other than an ES)MR Clapton, the late S. Vaughn may take issue with your overall slander of their respective choices of "axes". I must admit to supressing a chuckle and do share your sentiments in regard to your response to the fellow who was wondering what his Fender Squire bass was worth. I do fault Fender for putting their name on such a low grade, production guitar. Ditto’s for PRS and their new Santana deal. I’m really an acoustic player. Response Bob? Vulgaris et respectos. Quid pro quo Bob. Are you really living in a rat hole of an apartment trying to learn power chords on an Ibanez RX series with a bad neck and Korean tuners? Everything you spout off is something you read from the latest Guitar World. And your constant use of the word crap. Is that a pre-occupation? I have a lot of questions, Clarice (I mean Bob)but I tire so easily of you, for now…………. Most respectfully yours, T.R.

I own a 1973 Les Paul Custom Black Beauty. It is good condition apart from the Gold Hardware being very tarnished so its nearly all gone. Should I replace the hardware eg the pickup covers etc to make it look new? Will it affect the value of the guitar if i put newer parts on it?
-
December 23, 2001 at 1:31 pm #88275AnonymousGuest
Go ahead and buy some new parts for it if you like, just keep the old original ones if your that concerned about originality. There’s nothing wrong with "restoring" it.

check a book called "The Complete Beatles Scores". I’m pretty sure that’s the right title (if not it’s close enough). It’s great it’s got chords, lyrics, and tab/music for every instrument used on every song. By the way, the guitar part on "I’ve Just Seen a Face" is actually two guitars according to this book.

i adjusted the truss rod trying to stop the buzz that i had but now it’s two times worse:(. (somebody told me to do that, and i listened to them…maybe i just didn’t carry it out right) if anybody can help me pleeze tell me how!! i don’t care if the guitar turns out perfect, i just want it to be as good as it was before i started screwing around with it. thanks!!
-
December 23, 2001 at 1:15 pm #88300AnonymousGuest
if your neck bows in at the middle, then you need to tighten the truss rod. make sure that bridge height is good to, check your nut
-
December 23, 2001 at 11:11 pm #109053AnonymousGuest
When changing to lighter strings neck might bend in a backward bow. Press a string on first fret, and on the fret where neck meets body at the same time. Measure high of string over 7th fret usually(close to middle of frets pressed). A high of 0.4 millimeters or so shouldn’t be to bad. If string touches any fret middle tighten tross rod until you get it about right. After that work mostly with string overall high with bridge adjustment. Regards and Merry Christmas

All I can ever find on the web is tabs, tabs, and more tabs…does anyone know if there’s a site out there that translates tabs to regular sheet music? If so, please email me, or reply, or something…thank you!
-
December 21, 2001 at 8:35 am #88141AnonymousGuest
Tab would really have to be "translated" to standard notation by human. Tabs don’t have a strict rhythm to the notes; there’s no time sinature (on the ones I’ve seen). So that’s the key element that holds it back. It would also take a lot of time and effort to write the standard notation percisely. Tab only has to have the right notes inaccurately placed on the strings. Standard notation has to be totally grammatically correct.

I bought a domino californian off of ebay. Everybody says that japanese guitars are cheap imitations but it seems to be a nicely made instrument. Is there anyone that has a similar guitar and has a similar opinion about it?
-
December 22, 2001 at 11:18 am #88125AnonymousGuest
: I’ve long wanted a Domino Californian…lucky guy you are. 60’s Japanese guitars can be great, and exude tons more mojo than their rather traditional and staid American counterparts. Don’t listen to those weasels who shun cheesy 6-strings because they’re too insecure to be an individual…those instruments have their place and can be great, but their not the only game in town.
-
February 18, 2002 at 9:22 am #91159AnonymousGuest
I agree with motorhed, ..lots of mojo. I got one years ago at a thrift store, sunburst with an ugly wood grain (think 60’s station wagon trim) pick guard and switches in the way of your strumming. I spray painted the pick guard metallic green so I could bear to look at the guitar. Anyway the guitar has a HUUGE , I mean gigantic sound, big bass and a cavernous natural reverb! I can’t really explain it. I try to play it with only the treble switch in the "on" position to manage the hugeness of the sound. The short scale neck is good quality and very playable. Mine is missing some original knobs and bridge parts, but it’s a good little axe. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to share.

these work for just about anything. I’d go with either the vintage 30 or the celestion greenbacks (like Steve Vai uses). you’re headed in the right direction.

have someone that really knows there shit check your nut to make sure your strings aren’t binding. see if you can’t throw a set of sperzel locking tuners on it (you may have to enlarge the holes). And if all else fails it’s got a lifetime guarantee on it and Gibson will stand by it, give them a call.

DOES IT HAVE THE VINTAGE KLUSON TUNERS ?, MY LES PAUL STANDARD DID, AND USED TO GO OUT OF TUNE QUITE A LOT (WITH BIG BENDS) BUT I HAVE HEARD OF A LOT OF PEOPLE (OVER HERE IN THE NORTH EAST OF ENGLAND ) THAT HAVE HAD SIMILAR PROBS WITH THEIR LES PAULS
-
December 31, 2001 at 11:30 pm #88609AnonymousGuest
Hey Bro, Don’t wory about what all of these other fellows are saying about your AXE. The Zakk Wylde Les Paul is AWESOME, and so are ALL other Gibson Les Pauls. So, minding that, there is probally NOTHING WRONG with your actual guitar, especially if it is new, Gibson does not sell CRAP!!! I would suggest checking your stringing job, if it is a poorly strung guitar, it will stay out of tune. When changing your strings, wrap VERY tight, and the less amount of wraps that you can get, the better it will stay in tune. ALSO, strings bend a HELL OF A LOT, just on their own, so make sure all of the strings are "broken in". Hope this helps, and don’t lose faith in the GUITAR, it’s AWESOME!!!

I don’t have a Zakk Wylde Paul, but I have played set neck guitars that have "rubber" neck…this is to say that you bend a note and the other strings loose tension/pitch…try this pick you 6th string and let it ring, then bend your 3rd string, say at the 12th fret…bend it up a whole note…if the pitch of your 6th string changes, then you may have either a "rubber" neck, a bad joint where the neck is fastened to the body, or tuners that don’t hold up under stress…good luck!

Thanks for reading this. I managed to score the finish on the back of my guitar’s neck with a nasty thumb calous I earned playing…what is the best way to smooth this out? I must be playing toooo much!

December 20, 2001 at 9:42 am #88149AnonymousGuest
start out with 800 grit. It’ll go slow, but don’t work too hard or fast or you’ll burn the finish. finish with 1500 or 2000 grit wet sand paper take it easy and it should be good as new. if you want the detailed version e-mail me. [email protected]

yeah to the last question i wanna just download tab free, bloody sheet music is far too expensive these days and half of its wrong. so i just want the tab, no prices. sheet music businesses are gonna go bust at this rate, most stuff is on the net and it will serve them right for being so damn expensive. its only paper. shut up you moron!! Most of my time is spend playing music eg satch by ear, i find difficult but not impossible. i’m now into playing queen and can play some of the stuff but i find that the tab can give me other perspectives on the music, like if i’m playing in the right position or not. Get back to your blue veined flute playing an shut up.

its only paper from a tree !!! it sounds like you want to save the planet, not, regarding tab and sheet music, i can read music but would rather work things out for myself. Try listening to the music, rather than analysing it, and one day you might not be as crap as you are now. love Bob

Neil Peart clone, and Alex Lifeson rip-off; seek Geddy Lee wanna’be for Rush cover project in Houston, Tx. If you worship Rush, think Geddy Lee is the bassist to end all bassists, and would love to play Rush’s music with a couple of other Rush freaks, now’s your chance. Oh, yeah, if you’re a pretty good bass player, and know the majority of their catalog, that would help too. But if you have some chops, and really love Rush’s music, then we’d love to jam. Our original bass player got transferred out of state on his job, and now we’re like Rush after Jeff Jones quit the band. (If you know who Jeff Jones is, then you’re the guy for us!) If you just want to play the bass and jam, that’s cool, but if you’d like to tackle the complete Geddy Lee performance, (vocals and keyboards), that would just thrill us to death. We’ve had offers to play live with a local group, but don’t quite have our act together. Basically, we’re a couple of married 30 somethings who don’t get out much, and love to jam once or twice a week, and have been playing off and on since spring of 1999. We’re looking for that third piece of the puzzle to push us to the next level. We don’t claim to be great by any stetch of the imagination, but we sure have fun when we play together. We hope you’ll feel the same way. Gainfully employed, responsible person preferred. Responsible, starving musician acceptable. (Just kidding) If you’d like to be Geddy to our Alex and Neil, or know someone who might in the Houston area, please, feel free to respond to this post immediately. Thanks, Lerxst2k.

Hi, im looking to buy an amp. I play in a hard rock, progessive metal band and like to cover ac/dc, deep purple, metallica, and led zeppelin. I was looking at the Marshall 1959 SLP plexi, mesa/boogie triple rectifier solo head, and the fedner prosonic head. I want hard rock distortion (deep purplish), yet smooth metal sounds too. I also want that liquid solo sound ala Jimmy Page and Iron Maiden. Please help me pick an amp, or if u have anyother suggestions it would be a HUGE help. Thanks alot ron

Hi I like to know what type of distortion pedals like creed and Godsmack play on. I lke to try to achive there sound. I also have a question about amps. Is it better to have a head and a cabinet or just a comb amp. I play alot of heavy metal.
-
December 20, 2001 at 9:51 am #88148AnonymousGuest
I put my money in marshall. the plexi is a beautiful amp but my choice is the JCM2000 Dual Super Lead. try one (the trick for a good clean sound is hit the crunch on the clean channel and turn the gain down to like 2).

: Is there anything made with several preset drum and bass patterns to play rhythm or lead guitar with keeping in mind I am an amature and know nothing about piano? :Korg makes like 4 different beat boxes that give you everything(plus if you have more than one they link together and it just gets better after that). Also look for Boss, and there’s even some cool stuff from yamaha.

i got one on my kramer striker, but i took it off.in order for it to work the floyd must not be dipped back into the recess;it must be level.since i tighten the trem springs to keep it in tune if a string breaks while playing,i cannot use it.

if you’re like me and you detest trems, yourquickest fix is to open up the back and jam something in there. I tend to use pennies but you can use wood blocks, rubber stoppers, and all kinds of shit. otherwise if you like your trem (cursed things) hipshot makes an awesome little thing called the tremsetter. you can order it at most music stores.

You could just put like a leather shoelace through the hole in the strap and then secure it to the headstock, or install a ‘knob’ where you want it. : I play a Yamaha FG-335 (acoustic), which has one knob at the bottom of the body for the strap to connect, but no such knob on the neck or head. how can you own such rich boy’s gear and not know how to get a good sound? play around with the farkin knobs untill u get the sound u like. but if you want that sound so typical of modern bullshit metal bands, run your axe into a graphic eq withth 400 hz band down. take down the mid and gun it
-
December 17, 2001 at 5:06 pm #87807AnonymousGuest
the sound you are looking for is that "MID SCOOP" sound a lot of people think that a good valve amp will give you that sound, but in reality, it wont (ALTHOUGH YOUR AMP SHOULD HAVE A GREAT SOUND ANYWAY), what you need is a good graphic equalizer (most of the bands you mention will use one, or have some of the mid removed from their guitar in the studio at the desk). the basic rule is, for a more edgy crunch, turn the mid down (and the presence up) and for lead, turn up the mid. i hope i can help. tom

I have a custom Gordon Smith SG2. I was adjusting the pickups when it developed a hum, that would not go away again. Swapping around the neck and bridge pickups fixed it (one was a Seymour Duncan P90 soap bar, the other a P90 soap bar of uncertain origin (probably Gibson)), but the tone was wrong and when I swapped them back the hum came back. All the earthing seems to check out OK. Can anyone suggest where to look for the problem?

I need help! I am looking to buy an acoustic guitar as a gift and really don’t know tooo much about ’em. I can get into a new Hohner HW 420 w/Siberian willow top, back & sides at a very reasonable price. Anybody know this guitar? Is Hohner a reputable, good-toned guitar? The used Fender DG-24 that I’m considering is "almost" new but has high action. I’m also looking at a used Fender DG-20S. Does the wood type REALLY make the tone… ie: spruce better than willow or mahogany? I’d appreciate any comments and opinions. Thanks!

There are lots of guides on the web so I won’t try to explain it, search to find one or try this one (It’s a pretty good step by step w/pics, and setup info too): http://www.homeguitarrepair.com/tremolo/tremolo1.html Changing the strings is pretty straightfoward, the fun really begins the first time you try to tune it back up… but on the bright side it gets easier every time you do it, so the only advice I can give here is when you are ready to throw it against the wall… just walk away for a few min before you do something you regret… I know firsthand about this :). : I need to change the strings on a mid 90’es strat with a fender licensed floyd rose trem. I need to tune my guitar, where can I find a ‘proper’ key to tune it to with no other music equiptment but my out-of-tune guitar around? i.e. Where can I find the pitch of and E or A?
-
December 17, 2001 at 9:31 pm #87783AnonymousGuest
If your PC has a sound card and speakers just download a tuning program (there are 100’s of them), they can generate tones to tune against, or you can tune ‘digitally’ with a microphone (for acoustic) or the guitar directly connected (electric). You can also tune to the phone dialtone, I belive in the US it is F (again sure you can find this info on the web too, so I won’t bother repeating it). And as a minimum, just tune it so it sounds good to you and is ‘in tune with itself’… being ‘out of tune’ isn’t that terrible when practicing, you just really notice it when you play with ‘tuned’ instruments, and if you are then you can tune to them anyways… well that my 2 cents. : I need to tune my guitar, where can I find a ‘proper’ key to tune it to with no other music equiptment but my out-of-tune guitar around? i.e. Where can I find the pitch of and E or A?

First of all he uses a Fender Telecaster Plus. It’s slightly modified. It has a switch in between the Volume and Tone knobs (I think) that cuts the signal, between the pickups. So he can create tremolo and tapping tremolo effects with this. He uses a Marshall Shreadmaster, Boss Metal Zone, Boss Turbo Overdrive (I think – it might be the Super Overdrive), DOD envelope filter, Digitech Whammey, Boss Volume Pedal, Homemade Tremolo stompbox, Roland Space Echo (rack mounted), and Electro-Harmonix Small Stone This is most of them. A couple left out though. He uses a Vox AC30 for non-distorted sounds and a Fender Deluxe 85 for distorted sounds. He also uses a Boss Line Selector. Boss TU-12 tuner is also in his setup. Alternitively you could just go to http://www.guitargeek.com

im a woman with small hands.. my first 2 fingers on my left hand are 2.5 & 2.75" long.. and my left hand is 6&3/4inches from fingertip to wrist. What guitar models have the thinnest necks? I seem to recall as a kid that electrics were far easier to deal with in that respect. thanks..

Most Fender Telecasters have pretty thin necks. Little tweaking has to be done on a lot of them to get a low string hight, which is definately a bonus (to me anyway). Stay away from the Telecustom ’72 – very fat neck. All the squire Telecasters have a fairly thin neck (not extremely thin though). Ibanez guitars definately are the one’s to go for, for thin necks, but they cost a lot more than what you could get suitable.

i’m gonna throw you a few names. hopefully this is what you are looking for. Ibanez has the thinest necks on the market, the wizard and wizard 2. you’ll find these on the RG,S,and AX series guitars, and on top of that Ibanez makes good quality instruments. washburn makes a few very thin, very comfortable necks, and some good quality short scale models. If you dont mind spending quite a bit of money, the guitar maker Taylor makes, in my opinon, the nicest, easiest playing acoustics in the world, period. the only problem there is they only have two models under (take a deep breath!!!) $1300.00. Let me know how the search goes.

Rather than give suggestions for a guitar model (and in what price range, type, etc…) the best way to find one is to try as many different ones as possible… just go to a large music store(s) and try them all !!! until you find something that feels ‘right’ for you, then if it is too expensive or whatever just get the specs for that guitar and then you can search around (the web, etc.) and find others that at least match or are close physically and make buying desisions from there… and having small hands isn’t a problem, everyone I know when starting thought their hands were too small, big, fat, skinny, weak… etc, etc, and no matter what level you are at there will always be something that seems ‘impossible’ to acheive… and then before you know it you are doing it and moving on to and performing even more ‘impossible’ feats…. well those are my pennys thrown into the ring, good luck. : im a woman with small hands.. my first 2 fingers on my left hand are 2.5 & 2.75" long.. and my left hand is 6&3/4inches from fingertip to wrist. dear elle, do not let this discourage you. there are 3/4 size as well as children’s sized classicals that will be best suited to you for preliminary learning purposes. also i have had pupils as young as age five, able to make stretches that lumberjacks were unable to perpetrate. its not the size that matters, its what you do with it. good luck. My first visit here, I installed Fender Texas Special Strat Pickups in my Mexico Fender Strat. I combined and sodered all the new black wires to the same area where the original blue wires were sodered. Then I carefully sodered the new neck pup white wire where the orig neck pu went. I did the same with mid and bridge pups. The sound is weak and barely there. Has anyone done this? Do the wires all go to the original locations? Thanks for any help Chuck

Hi! I’m trying to decide which preamp/processor and floorboard combination to go with when running direct to the PA for live gigs (not using guitar cabinet or head). I’m trying to decide between the following: Roland GP-100, Tech 21 PSA-1, Boss GT-3, Rocktron Chameleon -Voodoo Valve or Gainiac, Oberheim 1000. (I tried the POD and didn’t like it live). If you have any other suggestions I’d love to hear them. For those of you who already run direct to the PA (without using guitar/keyboard cabinets or heads), what equipment do you use in your rig, and how do you have your chain set up? Any advice is appreciated! Thanks, [email protected]

Is this possible? I have an ’86 Ibanez Roadstar II RG 420 with Edge tremolo. I have blocked the trem and i was wondering if it was possible to replace the locking nut buy some retrofit nut and if so…where can i find these? URLs would be appreciated. Thanks
-
December 18, 2001 at 6:06 am #87957AnonymousGuest
it is possible but its gonna cost you a chunk of change. probably (unless you’re lucky) minimum $45 for a custom made nut and another $60 for a set of locking tuners. $105 later you’re ready to go, it’s just better to leave it alone.

I’m currently using a Fender Super Reverb RI and an older Pro Reverb. I use a Fulltone Fulldrive 2, Tubescreamer and a Fat Boost. I use the Fulldrive as my main OD then hit the Tubescreamer to kick it up a notch. The Fat Boost always stays on. When I turn my amps up real loud, say past 3-1/2 – 4 they sound like crap. On 3 they sound pretty damn good. It it because the amp is breaking up and affecting the tone??? Shouldn’t sound even better louder??? Or is it just too MUCH gain for these type of amps??? Any thoughts or similar experience with this? Thanks!

It could be a couple of things.Strats tend to be very finiky about being overdriven anyway. The single coil pickups aren’t really designed for high-output stuff. My Strat doesn’t react well with the TS-9 or TS-10. With the DOD 250 or Boss OD-3…it sings! For overdrive stuff,I think Strats have to be matched up with the right amp(tweaked)and/or the right pedal. It’s a real tricky issue. If your amp is breaking up on 3,your master volume may be set too high.I would RELY MORE ON THE GAIN PEDALS instead.Oh yeah, also remember that Fender Twins and Super Twins don’t break up well. They’re really clean amps. But with the right pedals and some tweakng…she’s all the amp you’ll need! Hope this helps P.S.you might want to check your speakers. What kind of speakers?? What kind of paper??

I have a vintage black and white Flying V (Michael Schenker color scheme) with "D’Agostino of New York" written on the truss rod cover. There is virtually no information on D’Agostino guitars (i.e. two small paragraphs in ‘The Blue Book’) and absolutely nothing on this Flying V. Does anyone have any information regarding the history of this guitar?…thx, Dan

Hi…(a) anyone know what an Enhancer – for acoustic guitars is ? & where I might buy one ? – how much Aust. $ ? (b) anyone got any ideas on how to significantly minimising fingerboard/string/fretnoise when recording classical guitar ? is there any such thing as a GOOD FLAT WOUND nylon classical guitar string ? I’ve tried Thomastic..ok at low volume/light attack – but TWWANG at increased volume…any suggests? I’ve also tried coated nylon strings..they only minimally reduce string/fingernoise. cheers Dave.

(This is actually a response to something Sphencker said in a follow up to "Disapointing trends in Music" but since this is way off the main point I’ll start a new thread) I’m sorry to see that Jeff Beck is not included when these other names are mentioned because he really was the best of any of them. Hendrix was the closest, but the styles are so far apart it’s hard to say. Of course this kind of thing is always controversial; people are entitled to their own preferences. But at the time it was widely recognized by guitar players; I think the reason Jeff is less well remembered now is that after the Yardbirds his bands were not as successful as Zepplin or Cream or Hendrix. There were no Top 40 or AOR hits, so the "classic" rock stations don’t play him, so a lot of people just aren’t aware of him anymore. Jeff’s solo albums in the 70’s did well commercially, but since they’re all instrumental you only hear them on the jazz stations occasionally, and they’re really not jazz. Anyone who want’s to know who is who in rock guitar should check out the Yardbird’s "Over Under Sideways Down" album– I still don’t know how he made some of those sounds, at the time people just couldn’t believe it. I always liked the Jeff Beck Group’s stuff, but he wasn’t a great bandleader, I think, and he really wasn’t among equals (even though the first JBG included Rod Stewart, who had been an unknown before that, and Ron Wood.) And "Blow by Blow", "Wired" and "There and Back" are his great solo albums, everybody should have those. There’s some terrible stuff, too– he has had a tendency to sometimes let other people come in and take over. Avoid "Beck Bogert and Appice", "Live with Jan Hammer", "Flash", "Beck’s Garage" and a couple of others, Well I’m through prozeletizing. I don’t blame anyone for not knowing about JB: if the radio isn’t playing it how is anyone supposed to find out? But guitar players ought to know; he was (is)the best.

What is a metronome? someone said something about one and i would like to know what it is
-
December 14, 2001 at 4:38 am #87661AnonymousGuest
A metronome is a device that makes a clicking sound. You can adjust the speed – 100 clicks per minute, 110 clicks per minute, … Most people use them for playing scales, arpeggios, and exersizes cuz it trains you to play accuratly and if you use it for 30 – 60 minutes a day youll play more accuratly when your playing without it too. When your playing along with it you play a specific amount of notes per click – I play 3 note per string scale fingerings so I play 2 strings ( 6 notes – 16th note triplets ) per click at 130 beats per minute with hammer ons and pull offs.
-

: What is a metronome? someone said something about one and i would like to know what it is A metronome helps you keep time. It makes a loud tocking noise at a specific rate of speed. You can adjust what the speed is depening on how fast or slow you want to play.

: I have an old Martin f-hole archtop. How do i mic it to produce a good clean sound? I have an in-hole condenser mic now…it comes out droney on the bottom and tinny on the top. What to do? Hey Bird Dog… The mic might just be picking up what it hears– boomy and muffled is what the inside of a guitar sounds like. You might try improving it with some EQ, but to really capture the sound of your guitar with a mic you need to do some careful listening (while somebody else plays your guitar) to find the best spot, and then put a mic there. I mean a mic on a boom. Contact and in-hole mics don’t give you the sound of the strings very well. Shure puts out a brochure telling how to mic different instruments, maybe they’d send one if you called them. Which mic depends a lot on whether you’re talking about live or recording. Those long, skinny condensers, the same ones that are used for drum overheads (Shure or AKG, or others) are good for recording but I’m not sure about live. Some players use two mics (maybe the one you have plus another out front to get the strings) but you have to be careful about placement to avoid phase cancellation. Or you could buy my Stratocaster… just kidding. Anyhow, good luck!

dear mr. to you: well, it is understandable to experiment, if you’re using a… (i had better not pronounce any actual brand names) … an inexpensive, bottom line type of an instrument to hack and destroy; however this is more like committing actual gradual torture, as opposed to an outright murder such as many grunge bands and others perpetrate by a public onstage smashing…. somebody call the Guitar Police!!!!!!!!

My 2 sins – ruined (resale value at least) a ’72 tele (in ’79 I think) by replacing the neck and pickups (I didn’t like them at the time), and doing my own custom paint job… and the coup de grace was carving my band (at the time) logo into my brothers PRS which I had at the time on the express condition that ‘I treat it like gold’.. neddless to say he kicked my ass and I bought the guitar (the ole pay-or-die payment plan)… alas I was young, and yes many chemicals were involved, but I still have both (and I still love how MY tele sounds/plays)… but ultimately belive if it’s your guitar, do as you wish (we’re talking informed decisions here… not blind stupidity). BTW- I’ve done my time… some of it hard :). : dear mr. to you: : well, it is understandable to experiment, if you’re using a… (i had better not pronounce any actual brand names) … an inexpensive, bottom line type of an instrument to hack and destroy; however this is more like committing actual gradual torture, as opposed to an outright murder such as many grunge bands and others perpetrate by a public onstage smashing…. : somebody call the Guitar Police!!!!!!!!

Yes I’ve seen a lot, but one that really got me sick was a new "Johnnie Smith" Gibson I sold about 1972 to a notorious writer/performer who had much success in the business. After a couple weeks he returned to have new strings put on, and when I opened the case he had screwed four different kids of pickups (all cheap) to the top. Some were not centered, so out came the scews, and more holes were made next to the first attempts of accuracy. This guy is a genius songwriter and his favorite guitar is one he got as a kid. It has no back, as many as nine pickups. He has put in a turn-buckle to support string tension, and several bottles of Elmer’s glue literally poured inside the top. I’ve sold him several axes, and hate to think what became of them, but I had to eat too! Got to go now, its almost "After Midnight"

dear red can we get social security disability for these victim instruments? how about prosthetic devices ??? and guess where i’d like to put all that elmer’s glue? i think people should need either an rx or fbi clearance to purchase elmer’s glue anyway, unless they can prove that they are not within 2,000 miles of a guitar. !

December 13, 2001 at 3:29 am #87674AnonymousGuest
: i wanna learn how to read tabs so i can learn some song to play.can anyone out there help me…please?!?! Tab is fairly simple to read. There are 6 lines each of which refer to 1 string on your guitar. When looking at the TAB the line that is on the top refers to the first string or thinest of all the strings on your guitar. The rest go acorrdingly. The second highest line refers to the second string and so on. The numbers you see on the TAB are fret numbers. So if on the TAB sheet the highest line had the number 3 on it then you play the third fret on the first string. Hope that helps. Graham

It’s a ’72 3 bolt maple neck, tremelo version, original cream/yellow color, with (non-original) black pickguard. New pots and 5-way switch and 2 new pickups, and though I have the original parts they are pretty well worn out. Original paint has a good many nicks and some hairline cracks, nothing too bad. It’s in excellent playing condition, recently set up by authorized Fender guy. Anyway , I just took it to my local consignment shop and put a price of $950 on it, but I’ve just seen some prices online that were a lot higher. I’m wondering if I should call in the morning and raise the price. Any advice?

Hmm.$950…that’s about right. You mentioned the two "new" pickups, that could de-value the guitar a little. But I’d ask for $1,200 even if the other hardware is worn. That can be easily replaced with little or no damage to the axe. Also, the store gets their cut too. So,you should ask for for $$$. Good Luck

I’ve been asked to play ‘Sailing’ by Rod Stewart for a Xmas party to accompany one of my Chinese collegues. Could you give some tips on a suitable strum pattern? I’m keen on sixties music (esp. Stones, Beatles)- are there any resources available which show the strum patterns for this material? Thanks for your help. Great web site! Paul

December 12, 2001 at 9:58 pm #87656AnonymousGuest
: how r they different than normal stings? Well they are ‘flatter’, the way they are wound, I won’t explain the process as you can go to many string maker sites and see the technical details, I just find that the sound better and are easier to play when you attack really hard… and I use them to get that ‘country blues’ sound.

-
December 13, 2001 at 1:18 am #87682AnonymousGuest
: how r tey different from normal strings? Hi Jason– Flatwounds have an outer winding that is flat, kind of like the tape winding on a racing bike’s handlebars. Also there are some strings that are shaved a little, to make them smoother. They used to call that kind "halfrounds", I don’t know if they still make those. They’re a little brighter than regular flatwounds. Flatwounds have a mellow sound with a lot of bass, and they’re harder to play than regular roundwound strings. You can barely bend them. They last forever though. Jazz players use them mostly, I think.

I’m sure everyone’s aware of this by now, but after switching to MTV or turning on the radio one too many times, I feel so disgusted by it I can’t help but point it out. Somewhere about 1990 or so, pop music stood up, pulled out a gun, and shot itself right in the eye. The problem with music today has nothing to do with not enough guitar solos, or whatever other lame thing you hear a 14 year old whine about, it has to do with the fact that music is no longer a form of art. Pop music today is simply an image that an artist portrays, serving only to con 15 year old kids into thinking that that image is "cool" and buying their album. Now, when I say "pop" music, many people will have the automatic response "well, so what, it’s pop music, it’s always sucked." However, if you’ll remember, pop music originally encompassed such legendary rock founders as The Beatles, Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, so on and so forth. What we see now is no longer a form of musical artistry, a translation of feelings into a musical form, it’s simply a collection of people who want to make money by looking "cool" on television. It has no substance, no value, no meaning, and basically no purpose outside of a resale market value. So don’t whine about music today not having skilled enough guitar playing, whine about it being nothing but a marketing tool. And next time you see your younger brother, sister, nephew, niece, or friend talking about how great the new matchbox twenty album is, pop in Comfortably Numb and give them a taste of what real music was before the advent of the image-fueled musical economy. Only by making sure the next generation is exposed to real music can we hope to stop it from dying out with ours. And next time you see Britney Spears leaving whatever tit-exposing photo shoot she’s doing at the time, do me a favor and tell her to go fuck herself. Long live real fucking rock and roll. Nathan

Hmm.I think I understand your grief!A large part of it has to do with the VIDEO.Back in the day it was all AUDIO that was used for record sales. But now,our brain cells can be assaulted from two sides. Here in the U.S. where T.V. is so powerful,it is easy to beguile the masses into thinking that "ALL THAT WIGGLES IS GOLD".I will admit that some of the stuff is alright, but the nature of the beast has changed,so all I can do is be selective of what I buy. I also thnk that music has run out of new ideas. So,we’re stuck in a vortex of masturbatory,ego-maniacle,tit-shaking MUMBO-JUMBO!Oh well,I like looking at TITS anyway. Britany Spears,by the way,has the look. But Christine Agiulara(spelling??)is a real talent!PROOF:She took a piano-player,bassist and drummer to a small club with record people attending…and rocked the joint!! I watched her on cable with a live band.I turned off the sound and observed. She had superb stage presence and was in total command of the band.Without all the glitz, glamour and props. So,I’ll end by saying…there’s talent out there, you just have to watch closer!! Just my opinion

Not to mention that anybody who plays rock guitar, be it good music or bad music, shouldn’t be so ignorant as to ignore the fact that early blues guitar defined most rock guitar today. In my opinion, anybody just picking up the guitar should learn the blues before they attempt anything else, as it creates a foundation for basically all lead guitar. Anybody who isn’t amazed by SRV or Satriani doesn’t deserve to pick up a guitar in the first place. The actual difficulty of a guitar piece has nothing to do with it’s greatness, what’s important is a feeling that’s imbued in the music by only the greatest guitarists/musicians. A piece of music should be an attempt at conveying feelings through sound, not screaming and hammering on the same scale over and over again (unless there’s a real message involved, then by all means go for it). I respect guitarists like Steve Vai and EVH, but their playing doesn’t cause me to feel anything besides pity at how incredibly long they spent learning every single scale and playing it 24 hours a day. Guitarists like Clapton, Gilmour, Page, Hendrix, and all the rest of the greats are the ones who stand apart, because their playing FEELS…it’s raw emotion, and it tells a story. A good solo shouldn’t be straight speedy licks, it should like another voice, singing it’s own verse of the song. Anybody who’s ever heard Comfortably Numb, Stairway, White Room, Little Wing, and the rest of the classics should understand that they are different than the intro to Eruption or whatever riff Limp Bizcut is repeating over and over again (not to insult the guitarists of these new age "anger" bands, I’ve heard some of their real work and it’s excellent). All that’s important is that new players understand the guitar as an addition to a band, an incredibly beautiful instrument that can be used to convey emotions without any spoken words, rather than a chance to whirlwind through scales as quickly as possible to impress the neighborhood kids. In the end, all a lead guitarist can hope to do is tell his part of the story in any given song, regardless of how fast, slow, complicated or simple it is. All great bands are comprised of members who know their places within the band. Pink Floyd works perfectly because no one part of the ensemble attempts to raise itself above the rest of the band, and everything flows perfectly together. It’s the same with all the rock legends…they work because they understand each other, and they understand that they’re not creating the music, but simply letting their feelings and emotions flow through in whatever form they take. Sure, we’ve all got to learn a basic knowledge of the guitar in order to play…chords, a couple scales, and maybe a little theory. But what’s important is to immerse yourself in music, and not immediately forego something just because it’s "old" or "outdated." A true guitarist is a true artist, and a true artist understands that art in any form is beautiful, as long as it conveys a feeling and a meaning. Anyway, I’ve said my peace, maybe Guitar World will hire me to write editorials on the decadance of modern music, hehe. Laters, Nathan : Yeah it hacks me off too.i totally agree with you. : because they have been brainwashed by the sh** guitar playing they think is cool and fake marketing ploys, they all go and get themselves axes too as they reckon that makes them look "in", and play stuff written by amateurs, their idols. : Worse still, they criticise legends like Led Zeppelin, Knopfler, satch, crazy horse (all my favs here!!) and blues music for being "bad", out of date, etc. And could someone tell those 12/14 year olds that they look stupid in baggy hoodies and jeans meant for grown men? thanks. : As stated earlier, Long live shreddin! and true guitar playing!! 🙂 G

No.Once a year is fine.It really depends on the guitar. The key is to put it back in the case when you’re not using it! Going from heavier to lighter strings(or vise versa)will also require a setup. Good Luck

Why not every month? If I could get people to belive that, I could get rich of just "setups" alone!! Once a guitar is setup, its ready to go…. only difference is when you change string guages/drastic tuning, or install new parts ( tremolo ect.)

so, you’re saying weather changes have no effect on guitars (wood)? I have a nice natural finish Warwick. I also live in the Midwest. it goes from -0 no humidity to 99 with 75% humidity in 6 months. you’re saying once a guitar is setup it’ll be fine through that?

get a chord book and learn the basic chords, starting with the most common chords, Major (sounds happy) and Minor (sounds sad). then check out a tab site on net eg guitaretab.com and you’ll find chord patterns to millions of songs. what kind music do you want to play? if u r a beginner, i recommend Dire Straits "Sultans of swing" chord pattern, or Neil young’s "Driveby", both are quite easy.

I have an old Hofner acoustic guitar with the ROUND hole up above where you strum the strings. Inside, there is a lable that says, Hofner Anno, 265v. On the neck, it also says it is a genuine Hofner made in Germany. I was wondering how much it may be worth as I may sell it.

I have just bought a Behringer V-amp, and rather than sitting with it for an hour I was wondering if anyone can give me the settings for the Smashing Pumpkins guitar sound (Rocket, zero etc.)
-
November 13, 2003 at 1:26 am #113906AnonymousGuest
Well, rocket and zero has very different settings, you’ll have to be more spesific about a song, or at least an era. Besides, the vamp can’t make a good sp sound alone. However, you can make something similar to the SD era sound by using the Fuzz setting, and the gish era shouldn’t be too hard. Keep in mind the fact that the songs are very processed, meaning that for instance Zero has a lot of guitar overdubs, including two 12-string acoustic guitars (!) Just fukk around with the vamp, if you know what you’re looking for, you’ll soon find out whether the vamp can do it or not. Good luck.

When you give your opinion pleasse feel free to recommend what brand or kind of guitar as well. Thanks, Mikey

December 11, 2001 at 5:09 pm #87506AnonymousGuest
changing to different gauge/brand of string will change the sound. if shes a squire strat then changing pickups will be good, as those ones tend to sound prety stingy. if you want like a warmer sound, try some seymore duncans, these pickups rock. if yer into metal get an emg 81 put in the bridge hehehe
-
December 10, 2001 at 3:44 pm #108544AnonymousGuest
changing strings can often have a great effect on sound. is cheap to do get the person in the music shop you buy strings from to do it for you, i always mess it up myself! however you may want to change pickups, these are the most expensive part of the guitar(?) -think so- but that would be more. what kinda amp do you usually play thru?

It all just depends. I started on an electric, and in my opinion if you learn on an electric you kind of screw yourself over for an acoustic. I got so used to the action on an electric, i.e. bends, slides and whatnot, that playing an acoustic isn’t even fun for me since the action is so much worse. However, I’m also a straight-up picking lead player, so I don’t do much rhythm strumming. It just depends on whether or not you want to learn to play lead guitar or not, if you just want to learn the basics then I’d go for an acoustic. I still enjoy picking up an acoustic to play Wish you Were Here or Stairway, but when I really want to wail I need my electric. So, like georgi says, it just depends on what kind of music you want to learn. There’s always plenty of time to change later, I’ve been playing for almost a decade and I still know about 1/100 of everything there is to know. Just have fun and enjoy it, whatever you decide to go with. Being Steve Vai and wailing out the scales is easy, it’s being Clapton or Gilmour that’s tough, because you have to feel your playing so much so that it becomes a part of you rather than just your fingers picking notes really fast. Just have fun. : Hello, : My name is Merrick.I’ve always wanted to play the electric guitar(strat),but my dad says i should get an eqaustic guitar before i get and electric one. : My question is,is it possible to start on an electric guitar? : thanks for your time and help. : your sincerly : Merrick

hey merrick! it depends on what kind of music you want to play. However i think acoustic is slightly harder to play but it is simple to get the basics down on ie picking technique, finger patterns etc and this is most important thing of all! acoustic is cheaper too. but electric is cool if you only want to play rock etc. It would be easier to start on electric but you need amps etc and this is more expensive. what kind of music do you like? I recently picked up a butter yellow archtop acoustic "Airline" at a pawn hop. It has awsome tone and plays well, but I know nothing about it’s history or about Ailine in general. Any info would be a great help. Thanx.

My mom gave me her airline and I recently had it re-strung. Mom got hers as a gift about fourty years ago. (circa 1963). Mine’s chiped and of poor quality, but what do ya’ expcect since my sisters and I banged it up when we were too young to know any better. Just thought I’d give a head’s up on how long they’ve been around for! P.S. – The one I have is so old there is no knob to place a strap on it!!

That’s funny. I just picked up a tobacco brown Airline archtop at a pawnshop in L.A. It came with a really nice hardshell case; the instrument is a bit dinged up but sounds really nice and the intonation is perfect all the way up the neck. Wow! I’m glad to know that others are enjoying Airline guitars out there too.

Acoustics were made by Kay and Harmony, and electrics were made by Harmony for Montgomery Wards, under the Airline name, thru about late 50’s-early 60’s. The same guitars were made for Sears under the name Silvertone. I have a 1964 Airline that has decent action and still screams thru my old 80 watt Sunn amp! Airlines are a great, under-appreciated guitar.

The things you have tried don’t effect your problems. 1.Is your intonation correctly set? 2.Do you stretch your strings after installing new ones? Especially on light gauges with plain G. 3.A lubricant like Stewart/McDonald sells for nut grooves help the strings have neutral tension (a must), but I have used pencil lead with good results. Only tune up to the pitch! Tuning down to note leaves slack in everything that will slip out of tune always. 4.Have you lost springs out of your tremelo mechanism? 5.Occasionally a set of strings are "funky" and can’t play "in". Hope this helps! Remember there is only two kinds of music (GOOD & BAD).

Behringer GX110 is a small 30w practice amp with effects loop, headphone jack, line in, midi, and you can get one new for about $120. It also has ‘built in’ effects which after buying one for my 10 y.o. nephew I was pretty impressed by it, so I got one for myself…. both channels sound good, and you can get pretty much any sound (of course little 30w ‘practice quality’) you want. It’s a good little amp to take around for messing around and with the built in effects you dont need to lug xtra boxes around (but you can use them too). : Do any one know of any practice amp w/ effect loop?? or they r all high end amp??

I have a report to do for 8th grade history. I am looking for information on how the electric guitar changed or affected the music world. I can’t find anything exact to this subject, and have been looking for the past 4 weeks. I have a lot of miscellaneous facts, but nothing concrete. There is a book written about this subject, but we can’t find it. I would appreciate any suggestions, comments, or help.

Trey and Mike both play instruments that thier sound guy made for them. They’re completely original.

It’s a hollow body custom made by his sound guy Paul Languadoc. A combination of the guitar, effects, and talent allow Trey to rip.

If you can get your hands on the back issue of Guitar Player from a few years back that had Trey on the cover, it gave a nice little diagram with details on Trey’s gear and setup

You could start with http://www.wholenote.com, all lessons are free but you have to do some sifting to get to what you want. There are also links from the homepage right here at guitarsite that might be good, but if you are really serious you should call a music school, you can usually get a half hour a week theory lesson just like a guitar lesson from a live person. I eouldn’t mess with the truss rod unless you know what you are doing, to start I belive it has a tune-o-matic bridge… start by adjusting that, if you can’t figure it out go to gibsons site and they have a tun-o-matic ‘setup’ guide you can download. : : see topis : take off the small plate on the bottom of the head stock and there should be an allen screw there.

: I have to deceide between a Mesa Boogie Mark I, Marshall JCM900 and a Hughes and Kettner amp. : I want to play Metal(Metallica, Children of Bodom, etc.) and a bit funk, Either one is a real kicking amp and you won’t go wrong. They each have a distinctive sound and that varies depending on your guitar and pickups. But what I would reccommend is that you also consider a really good effects rack! That gives you more sounds than you’ll know what to do with… at first! But it really opens you up to creativity. If you sound good, you feel good about your playing and you get creative! Hope that helps. Angel

The Gibson EB-3 is a cool sounding bass. You can get enough treble out of it, but maybe not as much as you’d get out of a lot of other modern basses, but it’s there. Jimmy Lea of the 70’s British rock band Slade got a great trebly, fluid tone out of his EB-3. I don’t think he used the tone switch (muffler switch) on his. It’s a shorter scale bass than most basses, which helps give it a distinctive tone. Jack Bruce of Cream, Andy Fraser of Free, and Dennis Dunaway of the old Alice Cooper band also used this bass — I think they did use of the tone switch, which muffles the treble differently than the tone controls on the guitar do. I have a 70’s Japanese EB-3 copy, and would never part with it. (I know this response is years after the fact, it’s intended for someone who may do a search on these instruments).

Hi ! Being convinced about the quality, I bought one announced as a 1967 issue the serial number is #894501. I know Gibson changed the codification afterwards but I would just like to have the confirmation. Not a ’89 but a ’67 !! Thanks for your cooperation. Georges

The Alembic electronics obviously aren’t original equipment on this bass. They came with humbucker pickups, and they are famous for producing a boomy or muffled sound. They do not have very much high end response at all. Just listen to old albums from Cream, and you’ll hear an EB-3. I’d say that in exc. condition, a good price for one would be $900-$1500.

OK, I am getting a new guitar. I play a lot of blues and southern rock, and I am slowly but surely learning to play slide. I am looking at either a Stratocaster or a Gibson 335. My question is, how do hollow bodies fare for slide guitar. I know solid body is the norm, but I really like the dirty sound the semi-hollow gets. I CAN’T DECIDE! HELP!
-
December 7, 2001 at 7:55 pm #108459AnonymousGuest
Hmm.I would stick with the solid bodies. From my experience,semi-hallows tend to feedback and squeal when you "crank" ’em.Tele’s,Strats.,Pauls and S.G.’s are all good for slide guitar.Of course you’ll have to raise the action and re-tune ’em.But for rock-slide guitar you can’t go wrong with these. Hope this helps

I bought a cheap-nasty acoustic guitar that was $99 on Ebay a few months ago. I just wanted to try in out to see if I liked it and would want to switch to electric. Well, with Christmas coming up, I got an Ibanez RG220B for $300 on Musicians Friend and a Crate amp. Of course I can’t play it until Christmas. Anyways, I don’t know anything about pedals and such other than they make effects. What pedal should I get first and where can I buy it (hopefuly online)? Like I said, I’m a newbie that knows nothing, so give me a link and go into detail if possible.
-
October 18, 2002 at 7:39 pm #111287AnonymousGuest
I am a guitar teacher from California. One of my instruments is also an Ibanez RG220B – nice guitar! And because you are a self-confessed "newbie," I can tell you this: before you worry about which effects pedals to buy, learn how to play the damned guitar! Far too many guys worry about effects before they know all about scales, modes, the full range of multiple pentatonic scales, arpeggios, chord construction on the fly – in short, before they learn how to play guitar truly well. Focus for at least a year on learning good note sequences with no effects at all; pedals are not much good if you don’t play good notes in the first place. Believe me, the best players – the ones you admire – know what I’m talking about.

These guys have worked there arses of, not giving up when their bass player left this world, to go from an unheard of garage band to the greatest influence on Metal.
