Sounds like a Japanese made Vantage from 1981. The company was Matsumoku. Quality guitars & basses (before being bought by Samick and moved to Korea) I own 2 Vantage Basses of the same era. The pickups are almost certainly Dimarzio. The best info about early Vantage guitars is here: http://www.therathole.org/guitars/models/models.html

Was given an old (Black and Pink) Harmony Caliente. It’s an arch top,f hole with a sliding adjustable bridge, and trapeze tail piece. It has a black body with a pink V coming to a point 3 inches from the bridge and all paint appears to be original. From the paint job I assume it is from the 50s. Anybody have anything on this thing?

Did Cobain use a Boss DS-1 distortion? That is what I hear. What kind of chorus did he use? Chorus is audible on a number of Nirvana recordings. Are there any other effects he used? I figure there wouldn’t be too many, since he was really a grunge guy.

Yes kurt used DS-1 in Bleach and in nevermind. After he used Boss DS-2 turbodistortion. For the chorus he used electro harmonix small clone. For other effects you go in this site,it’s beautiful http://www.kurtsequipment.com. Grunge is not dead!!!!!!!!!! Alex

I also heard that he used a boss ds1 and i also heard that he used an electro hamonix chorus for other songs as for amps live he played mesa boogie heads on marshall cabs but in the studio for the clean songs he used a vox ac30 hope this helps you getting your sound and by the way fender is re-realesing the jagstang

For most of his distortion he used an Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi —- I think he used that Electro Harmonix Analog Chorus thing.

thank you. I got to looking and have a further question………. Do you think I can get a decent single coil sound with a phase/split config out of stock ibanez pickups? I am running through a line 6 ax212 so it pretty much gives me all the cool sounds, just want the ability to get some tele twang.

With a phase switch you can probably get a pretty twangy sound, but with a split switch you’ll probably just end up with just a weaker sounding pickup and not the Strat or Tele sound.

I am trying to dplicate a technique that Gary Rossington does on some Skynyrd songs. He gets a ringing "twang" sound at the end of a note or riff that can be heard on "Gimme Back My Bullets" and other songs as well. I first thought it was associated to is Les Paul Humbuckers and could only be accomplished with that and maybe an effect of some sort but I really think it is how he is set up and just a technique. Can anyone help and does anyone know the sound I am talking about. It is a distorted twanging ring. Thanks

I need 2 guitarists (ages 14-17) for a punk rock band. I’m looking for people who are willing to be different so we’ll stand out above other punk bands. I have no preference whether people are male or female. I have not had any previous experience in a band that has actually played together. I am 14 (female) and I sing, the bassist is 16 (male), and the drummer is 15 (male). Please, if you’re interested, contact me. We live in Cleveland, Ohio.

I have a Gibson Acoustic guitar style L-1 serial number 38586 w/ patents of Feb. 1, 1898 and Mar. 30, 1906. I was wondering if anywould would have any idea how much it could be worth. It is in decent condition, still very much playable w/ proper restringing, though there is wearing on the neck from usage and some minor cracks. E-mail me if you would have any idea, thanks.

It’s not a 1906 – probably 1917 or so, judging by the serial number. Unfortunately they’re not worth much, $400 if it’s pretty beaten up, maybe $900 if it’s in good condition and you’re lucky. Much luck, -m’b

Help! I have been searching desperately for a Charvel Surfcaster HT for sale but have only been able to find Standards, 12 strings, and SC4s. I have been scourring eBay to no avail. I wish that Jackson had never stopped making the SC1, but I guess they thought that a guitar called "surf"caster should only be used for surf music. Have they forgotten that Scott Ian from Anthrax played one for a while? Or what about Tommy Victor from Prong? Any information would be most appreciated.

We have a Marshall VS100 amp that occasionally buzzes loudly. If you give the amp a little slap it stops. While it is buzzing you can’t hear anything else. I replaced the preamp tube but that did not take care of the problem. The circuit board looks ok too. Any ideas? Could it be the speaker causing it? Thanks

If its a 120 hz buzz, you have the classic symptom of a bad filter capacitor. Suspect the largest capacitor ( its a can) in the amp.

I have an older Marshall amp that does not have a CD Play-along input. I thought it was a cool idea so I went to radio shack and bought some jacks and a project box. I wired the two 1/4" mono jacks together (correctly) for in and out for the guitar. I then installed a 1/8" stereo jack. I wired the sleeve and tip terminals of it to the tip terminal of the output jack and the ring terminal to the ring terminal of the output jack. Sounds good so far. When I plug the output tp the amp and plug the guitar into the 1/4" input, the guitar plays fine. When I plug the CD player into the 1/8" jack the CD plays fine, but you can’t hear the guitar at all. I thought the amplified signal from the CD player may be overpowering the guitar so I put a little RCA/1/8" adapter together and used an unamplified CD changer. The result was the same. Anybody got any ideas as to what the problem may be? I thought about adding a resistor between the stereo jack and the output, but I don’t know how to select it or if it would fix things. HELP!

Try this out bro. I’m playin an ibanez rg1570 and with the metal zone set as follows it sounds incredible: Put the low dial at 11o’clock, put the high all the way up, put the outside mid at 1 o’clock, put the inside mid at 11 o’clock, and crank the distortion all the way up. If your guitar sounds anything like mine this will offer you an awesome sound for metal. Peace.

I wish people would stop putting aftermarket parts on their guitars…it decreases the value of said item, and it makes the ones that are 100% factory more expensive!

I am looking for an Mosrite bass from about 1965-1970. It can be in bad shape because I am going to restore it. The one I had was a 1966 (The Ventures Model) with double pickups. If anyone knows of one that might have a case with it also,, please contact me with the price and contact information.

I have owned for over thirty yrs. I have scoured the internet this morning trying to find a site that has this bass and a price to go with it without success. I need to sell it, but don’t want to be ripped off. You got a offer and some kind of back up that’s it’s a fair offer? let me know. By the way, no case.

I am having trouble getting a good warm crunchy sound. I have tried an mxr distortion + and a boss super overdrive. Sound is too high end even with the mid and treble turned down. I am looking for a Jerry Cantrell or Zakk Wylde crunch. Is it time to check out a digital pre amp? Also, I have emg pickups and have el34’s in the amp. Thanks.

I have the same amp, bought it new. has a sticker that says "super lead" over the word "bass" on the chassis. That amp has no master volumn control. The only way to use it is all the way up, which is crazy. That’s a great amp but you need to install a master volumn. Did i mention? you need to install a master volumn control.

: IM NEW AT THIS. IVE HEARD HEAPS OF PEOPLE SAY VALVE. SOLID.TUBE. WHATEVER. WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN? HOW DO THEY SOUND DIFFERENT? WHATS THE BEST? BASICALLY WHATS A SOLID AMP? WHATS A VALVE AMP? WHATS A TUBE AMP? PLZ HELP BY INFORMING ME. THANKS ALOT. If you’re just starting out, i.e. practically broke… get a solid… solid state/transistors/diodes aka not tubes ( or their archaic artsy name valves) They’re cheaper, and usually lighter weight to carry around. You can find them in any brand name… Marshall, Vox, Fender, and even Mesa Boogie — known for their big (and expensive $1000+) tube amps — all have solid state amps. The lower wattage amps run anywhere from a starting price of @$50-70 dollars for a smaller practice amp, up to a few hundred for larger wattage amps for small clubs. You can also find off brand names like Electar, Epiphone that have 30 watt tube amps for under $300, and Fender & Carvin has some nice smaller tube amps @ $500. The catch of course is that they (tube amps) tend to be a bit more delicate. The tubes are made of GLASS! and once they heat up working, have to cool down gently!!!!!! Don’t end the show and pack them in the car in the wintertime!!! Busted glass tubes will make you cry in more ways than one. While it’s hard for the "average guy" to hear the difference in tube vs. solid state… There are many who swear that tubes sound better, louder, warmer, sweeter… all subjective terms but I tend to agree. I got an engineering guy at my church who was a radio engineer and worked in both tubes and transistors and he says you can make them both do the same thing…. Your best bet is to go to different stores, and either play them yourself side by side or let the store clerk play for you… some do like to do that. ask questions… read more of the follow ups on this site, and others (harmony-central is another user review website) read the trade magazines. Don’t buy something you don’t need because a salesman wants to get a raise or because Roger Van Flashy Hentrick plays it exclusively. If you want something funny and cheap, but doesn’t sound too awful bad check out the "pignose" brand of travel/practice amps… not the best in the world, but they’re good at what they do. For that matter, I used to have an old rockman "pocket amp" that was obviously transistors (it looked like a sony cassette walkman) but through those headphones sounded like an arena full of Boston. Good luck and HAVE FUN PLAYING….otherwise why do it?

For many many years my husband’s dream was to own an Ovation Legend 12 string acoustic electric. I was able to buy him a new one about five years ago. (I paid about $1200.00) We have five children and our life has been pretty busy so there was always the excuse with regard to time and lessons when it came to him playing it. I have recently decided to take violin lessons and it has made him want to take lessons on his Ovation…HOWEVER…when he went to take it out of the case,,,,he realized it was cracked. The crack runs along a very straight line from the end of the guitar to the beginning of the bridge and then no further. He was so very sick about this that he did not tell me for a week! When he did..I wished he hadn’t ..it just broke my heart and I could see from the look on his face that he is just sick about it. He has been babying it with a guitar humidifier and it has caused it to close some and we are also running a humidifier in our loft, which is where the guitar was stored. He owns 3 other guitars, 2 of which are lower end Ovations that have no cracking and ironically were the only ones that were NOT in the case. Could someone here be so VERY kind as to give us some instruction as to getting it repaired? We want to be sure and send it to someone who knows what they are doing. I have finally gotten him to realize that if you wait until everything in your life is just a certain way in order to play…then you never will. Now he is ready and I would just love to surprise him by having it fixed. Thanks so much for your help! Deb S

A couple years ago the bridge pulled off my Applause mandolin which i had purchased used from ebay. I contacted Kaman industry ( who makes both applause and Ovation) and they had me return it through a dealer ( Axe Haven music ) Long story short they sent me a brand new Mandolin. Moral of the story, try Kaman first. I paid a total of $5 to ship the mandolin through Axe Haven. Peace Jim

The first time I did I must have been really involved in looking at the tuning knobs on the head because after it was tuned I noticed the brigde at a 45 degree angle to the guitar body! Anyway, I tried later to pay attention to what happens when you tune it and have come up with a procedure that now takes about 15 minutes and I hope it helps. The main thing to remember is make ‘little’ adjustments. Don’t try to get it in perfect tune right away. Just try to keep everythin as ‘even’ as possible. I start by loosening the lock-downs at the nut and back the fine tuners almost all the way out at the bridge. Then I loosen the strings all the way so there is no tension. I have to keep going back over strings I already loosened because they get tight again as you loosen additional strings. Next I’ll start to tighten the strings as evenly as possible by the tuning pegs on the head. I’m not really worried about tuning yet as much as trying to get the strings to where they just start to get tight. Just to balance the bridge I’ll start with lower E, then high E, then B, then A. Now the tuning begins. I hope you have an electronic tuner because I can’t imagine doing this without one. I saw a freeware one on tucows.com from http://www.bincsoft.com/. I don’t know how good it is. There are a few others there also. At this point, in my opinion, there’s really no sense in tring to get the strings in perfect tune yet because as soon as you tighten another string the bridge lifts up and the rest of the strings go flat. I just try to get within a fret or two or even more (in the same direction of course, like flat) at the beginning. I think the main goal here is to try to get them ‘evenly tense’. I’ll go the the next string, get within a few frets or so and go back to the first and retune it because it probably went flat. From this point on I’m going to the next string in no particular order and basically trying to keep them even. You especially want to check all strings ‘often’ to see if you have one ‘way off’ especially sharp because if you loosen the sharp one all the rest go in the right direction (sharp) which is really helpful. After I tune a string I go back and retune all the ones I have already done. Once I get them all close it starts to get fun because things actually work. I’LL make A MINOR adjustment in the right direction without trying to get the string in exact tune because that will throw out the rest even more. I just keep doing this over and over and sooner or later it’s in tune! Oh yeah, when you’re tuning look at the bridge every so often to make sure it’s not getting way out of level with the guitar body. From what I’ve read as long as your guitar is set up correctly and you haven’t changed string guage or anything major like that since it worked before, you should come out with a level bridge.

Hi there great website! Last year I bod a Gibson SG from an old woman, very vintage, very used, great sound.. Begin 70’s the guitar just appear in her basement(strange story) Any way.. I’m not sure of the date of manufacture and what the value is. serial #280076 please..someone help me out! Many thanks Tony (Rotterdam/The Netherlands)

Hi Tom Dating Gibson SG’s is difficult from just the serial number. Yours was made either in 1965, or 1973, 74, or 75. You need to look at the individual features of the guitar as well in order to narrow the range down. If it’s a 65, it’s worth much more than the 73, 74 or 75. Value depends entirely on condition and the exact model. Can’t be more specific without a pic, sorry!

Hello. I have a red Hondo 767 V. It was given to me a couple years ago. Decent shape, some little dings in the finish. Had to rewire and put in new pots. Took out tone control and running straight off the pick-ups. Plays and sounds as well as the Gibson V2 I had. To the best of my research knowledge, they can be worth in the $500-700 range, in good shape. I’m no pro but an enthusiast. Good luck. TheAtomik.

Jon uses a Washburn Nx6 w/ EMG81/85 a Dunlop Crybaby Wah ito a Korg AX30G processor. The signal is then run into the input of a Marshall JCM800 2203. He uses the distortion from his processor. The head is only used for clean sounds. There is a review of his gear in the April 2004 Guitar World magazine in the very back

Depends on the repair and who does it…. generally if it is a professional repair the guitar should not sound ‘worse’, but if you are worried that it will sound ‘worse than it already does’ that implies it already sounds bad… so why not just get a new one ? : is the sound going to be worse on the guitar if it is professionaly repaired?

basically with a floyd rose or any floating bridge the guitar must be restrung or setup so that the bridge is straight ie parallel with the top of the guitar. to fix your bridge its simple and self explanatory. if its pulled forward tighten the bar spring tension or add more bar springs. if its leaning back do the opposite. also jumping between different string gauges will need you to adjust such settings and also the neck. hope i could help.god gave rock’n roll to you. ta.

Someone gave me one of these recently and after replacing the fuse, it was blown, it still doesn’t work. Eveything appears to work correctly, all the tubes get hot and the light goes on, but there is no juice going to the input jacks for the guitar. Does anyone know if this can be repaired by me or if I should bring it to a pro. Who can I bring it to, I live in PA. Any help would be appreciated.

If you’re going to for hard distortion, definitly go with mesa, marshall isn’t even close compared to mesa for distortion. I have a mesa road king, and I don’t think there’s a better amp out there. If you’re looking for a good amp for a clean sound, marshall is the way to go. If you have money to blow on guitar amps, you might as well by a mesa triple rect or road king and then get a marshall and get to mesa 4×12’s and run your guitar through those. Then you’ll have the best of both worlds…

i got my guitar about a week ago, it is a used esp ltd m100, and at first it would not go out of tune, now it goes out of tune real easily. would this problem be caused from worn out strings, or is there something else that could be wrong? please respond on this site or email me. thanks alot, shane

i have a jackson js30. i have just got sum cash to buy some new pickups. i don’t want to get a different guitar as i really like my jackson, i just want a more powerful sound. i play mostly rock, although i like other stuff too.

hey, i would suggest a passive emg pickup! emg’s are great for jacksons. they have a high output which will boost your sound very good. emg also gives you the change to not only play rock but also blues punk and other styles of music. they aren’t very expensive. check them out at http://www.emginc.com and look for passive pickups. i would suggest the H4 model in your bridge, which is a great pickup because it simulates the power of a active pickup and that’s what you need if you want your guitar to sound more powerful and harder sound.

Most any reputible shop will be glad to sell you correct gauge string and put it on for you. Watch what they do. They can show you how to string your guitar correctly. You can learn from them. Next time you can do it yourself. Good Luck!

i bought myself a beautiful black finish robelli in december and the more i pick it up the more i love it.for a guitar made in korea the workmanship is really remarkable.the tone unplugged is terrific , plugged into my fender bassman 60 it has a very unique rickenbacker sound.but it’s got spectrum plus when you mess with it.it’s a great buy at a reasonable cost.

although it does depend on your musical tastes and what sound your looking for (ie guitars are a very personal thing). i disagree. i, myself would go for a fender(strat) over a les paul not only for the sound but more so for the feel. a basic run down – les pauls sound very fat and warm (even on the treble pick up, which can be bad sometimes) excellent for most styles.although they sound great, to me they are very heavy and uncomfortably bulky compared to a strat. a strat in alot thinner, easier to play and a different sound. the neck pickup is beautiful and warm sounding and the bridge (treble) pickup is alot more trebly than a les paul (better for shred style solos) overall i do like a strat better for sound and feel. both guitars are great for rock, les to me are better for jazz than a strat but a strat is better for blues/country. both versatile instruments. you will find a strat more comfortable. the only thing with a strat is that most of them come with a single coil in the bridge (unlike a les paul) so when played with a heavy distortion using the treble pickup, it will feed back more than a les paul. you can fix this by changing it to a single coil sized humbucker (double coil). hope this helps your decision. ta

u cannot comapre a strat to a les paul its like comapring jhon lennon to steve vai, both were and one still is brilliant guitarist(s)but they are not in the same class, now back to the strat(which i presume u mean by saying fender because it is there biggest selling guitar) and less paul its all a matter of prefrence if you play blues, pink floydy stuff jimmi hendrix u want that lovely twang if you play long smooth soloes fast moving licks or most vintage rock(ac dc) so its all a mater of prefernce if you like all types like me get a good job. note: if you play heavy metal i would not invest in these guitars go for somthing more heavy but not a f*****G bc rich they suck ass they look like a childs drawing) so keep rockin or bluesing or twangin in anycase

Does anyone know how to get a curling or bowed pickguard to lay flat again. I’ve tried putting it under hot water with a weight on it. Ironing it, Putting it under my truck tire for a day. It just won’t stay flat. Who’s a genius? Thanks, Bill

Hey. I currently have a Vintage Raider of the Metal Axxe series, and I was thinkin of saving for a Fender Showmaster. I checked the scratchplate on current guitar and its covered with scratches. The Showmaster doesnt have one – will this not, in time, just scrape away at the finish and make it look shitty?

Would anyone have any thoughts about the following: I have a "57 reissue Strat, and the neck relief is different on each side of the neck when I sight down it. That is, there is a decent amount of relief on the left side (low "E"), and no relief at all on the right side high "E"). In other words – there is a lot more relief under the heavier gauge strings than under the lighter gauge strings. Thanks………. John Nilsen

Wow, I didn’t expect my response would be read by anyone who cared, let alone help someone out. Believe it or not, I don’t know all that much about guitars – I just learned what "Dropped D" meant about a month ago. I know less than a lot of guys have forgotten about guitars – especially as far as how to play. For what it’s worth, SG stands for Solidbody Guitar, not Solid Guitar like I said earlier. That said, the SG is about as sturdy a guitar as you’ll ever find.

Years ago at a flea market I found one, dated 1973, a "classical" nylon string version. This "cheapo" guitar has a solid wood top, and mahogany sides & back. The sound is absolutely phenominal. The box is extremely well made, this one was sitting facing the sun in an Arizona flea market, no cracks anywhere. The neck / frets /tuners are clearly cheap, but the box could use a replacement neck & this would be an unbelievable guitar. I paid 2 dollars, it was marked 5. Years later a guy at the Martin factory in Nazereth PA. told me that the son of a reputable luthier took over when the father passed away. He used up all of this priceless tonewoods his father had collected. All he knew how to male was the box & bracing, the necks were bought intact & glued in place. There is a model and dated serial number on a paper lable inside the box. Model 80Y, Novenber 1973. I don’t know what to believe, only that this box has remained intact for over 40 years now without one sign of structural weakness, it’s light as a feather, and when I first tapped it (in only had 2 strings on it) I was shocked at what a full wide sound it produced. Stringing it up proved out what I thought. Intonation remains perfect. Ozone Ranger.

Hi.I just recently bought the rocktron all access floor controller and want to use it to control a Line 6 Echo Pro and Mod Pro. Is it possible for me to set up a patch on the Rocktron which would access an effect on,say, the Mod Pro whilst automatically setting the Echo Pro to byass. I guess it has something to do with setting the Line 6 units to respond to different midi channels, but is it possible to get one patch on the all access to transmit info on more than one midi channel at the same time. If anyone could help i’d be grateful, however if someone could explain this to me in the simplest of terms( im VERY new to midi and rack FX) id be even more grateful. Thanks in advance, hopefully. Wow, the Roctron is definately not for someone new to midi…you have a lot of learning to do. My suggestion is that you look up some FAQs about midi foot controllers to understand the commands and terms. Good Luck.

And where do you get these things? Home Depot and Lowe’s only sell inch-ratio bits. The tuners are 3×3 Les Paul style. Thanks.

: checkout: reranch.com Hi. I´ve painted some guitars and this is how i do it: First clean the surface but don´t use water. Then use the best paint system you can get – automotive paint (i use PPG and House of Kolor). Now it´s time to seal/prime the surface and give it a few hours to fully dry. Then spray the basecoat starting with a tack coat first. This provides an important tooth for the subsequent wet coats to adhere to. Don´t try to paint it with just one coat. It´s better to apply less paint and more coats. If you wish to do some graphics you should give the guitar a protective coat of clear. Let the guitar set for 24 hours and lightly sand it with 600 grit sandpaper. Don´t worry about the little scratches. At the end they´ll desapear. Now it´s time to put down the paint gun and go for the airbrush. The are many different ways to sketch your design. I use chalk because it wipes off easily and leaves no residue. When the graphics/design are finished it´s time for the clearcoat (use the paint gun!). You can now polish and reassemble the guitar. If you have any doubts, just let me know. Have a nice paintin´ joao

Nancy, I have a Fender Jazz Bass made in Mexico that I got used for $225. I think it was probably worth it although I’m not an authority. It is in perfect condition- in fact, the plastic layer was still on the pickguard when I got it. Anyway, is yours a Precision Bass, a Jazz Bass, or what? With that info. somebody will surely be able to tell you about what it’s worth. Hope this is a help. I recently removed a pickgurad from my Yari acoustic that was peeling up at the edges. I had originally intended to replace it, however, I like the beautiful Englemann spruce top better without it. Even though the guitar is only about 1 year old, it does have the "suntan" left over. I’ve heard that eventually it will fade to match the shade of the rest of the top. Anyone know anything about this? Thanks.

It looks identical to pictures I’ve seen on the net of the Bison Club series. The paintwork, scratchplate etc are all black. The plate at the base of the neck is marked "Bison Series" and numbered "0102190". The guitar is in mint condition. Can anyone please let me know the estimated age and value of this guitar. ps. I have no idea of what vintage / modern bisons look like, but I would say from the price that it would be a "new" club series Bison. A vintage one would be £800 plus I would have thought. : I have the chance of purchasing a Burns Bison, the vendor has no idea of it’s history so I am hoping someone out there may be able to help me. : It looks identical to pictures I’ve seen on the net of the Bison Club series. I have no idea what it is worth, or when it was made, but need to know if it is something I put in storage or store in the house so to speak! I do not play and do not know much about guitars ( guess that is obvious) it has a Pat. No that starts with the letter "d" and has flames and dice on it. I know it is not very new. Gibson # Z 21682: Probably not a serial number, but a factory order number, periodically used by Gibson. I believe your guitar belongs to the Z-Q system, which occured between 1952 and 1961. In this numbering system any instrument carrying letter Z means built 1952.

hey i’ve only recently picked up the electric guitar after a few years of playing acoustic so im new to the world of electric guitar….i bought a ventura vintage 30 amp for pretty cheap and it has a killer overdrive feature which sounds awesome…but when you play clean and pluck the low e string with any kind of force it makes a poping like noice…not a major pop…but its noticable…it only does it on the low e….anyone have any solution?

might be that the pickup is too close to the strings, and it bumping it.. or just too close to pickup the string clearly. to check it, adjust the pickup on the top, using the screw on the top of the pickup. it should lower the pickup into the body a little bit. see if that helps it. : hey i’ve only recently picked up the electric guitar after a few years of playing acoustic so im new to the world of electric guitar….i bought a ventura vintage 30 amp for pretty cheap and it has a killer overdrive feature which sounds awesome…but when you play clean and pluck the low e string with any kind of force it makes a poping like noice…not a major pop…but its noticable…it only does it on the low e….anyone have any solution?

hey its no biggy, the floyd rose is spring loaded. when u broke the string the bridge collapsed because all the force from the E string was lost. hold the bridge level with the guit by putting like a… sock underneith it then put in a new E string, mess tighten or losen the springs in the back of the guitar and its good as new.

Hello Dan, Don’t panic. The floyd rose is a floating bridge which means the strings act as a counter tension to the spring which make the bridge return to the original position. Think of it this way.. if the springs have 5lb pressure, the strings will need 5lb pressure to keep it stable/level. If you break a string and the counter pressure drops to say 3lb the springs will have a stronger pull making the bridge lay back into the body. Best thing to do is release the locking nut at the headstock and replace the string. I find it useful to have the bridge micro tuners wound up to a fairly loose postion which provides ample room to retune the strings once the locking nut has been retightened. Replace the broken string (i would recommend replacing them all with the same gauge as is on there) and retune the guitar as per normal. Tighten the locking nut and then fine tune with the tremelo micro tuners. On rare occasions the tremelo can get stuck back in the body, if this happens just press down on the tremlo arm until release from the body. This should be done before tightening the locking nut. Hope this makes sense. Good luck..

: I play guitar and when i sing some of the songs i fail to start at the wrong timing. What could be the best exercise to improve this very humiliating mistake. Get yourself a metronome. Practice as well. Some songs do have hard timings, and playing your guitar and singing at the same time is a skill that needs learning – like coordinating your feet and hands when you learn to drive. Practice + Metronome = cure!!!

I got a Gibson SG Special Faded a few months ago (maybe about a year ago), and it still amazes me. I bought it new for $550, plus a bunch of accessories (if you buy an SG, which I highly recommend, you should buy strap locks, or it will slip out of the straps and onto the floor, which is bad, although SG does stand for Solid Guitar, and rightly so), and it was about the best purchase I’ve ever made. I wasn’t sure if I made the right choice at first – I loved the tone, and the look, but it didn’t play all that great. But then I got it set up at a good shop close to me, and since then it plays like a dream. Seriously. Since then, I got it set up with heavier strings. I just took it in today to maybe get it set up again, but mostly ‘cuz I was worried that the neck was drying out (it’s really dry in my apartment), and the guy told me it probably didn’t need another set up, just some lemon oil on the neck and some new strings – he could tell I’d been playing it a lot lately because the strings were rusted from rubbing on the frets or something. The last guitar I owned was a Fender Squier, and I never played it because it was such a poorly-crafted piece of shit, it was more frustrating than fun playing it. I can’t guarantee that you’ll play guitar more if you buy an SG, but I played about twice a month when I had the Fender Squire, and I play almost every day now that I have a Gibson SG. I’m looking into replacing the pickups – they sound really good, but the pickups on SG Specials don’t come with covers, and I think I want a 498T for the lead pickup, which is what most SGs, including the Standard, come with. First, I would say don’t be afraid to buy a used SG. Really, they only sound and play better with age, so if you don’t mind some scuffs and scratches, look around for a good used SG. That said, I paid less for my guitar than I probably would have spent for a used SG – for some reason, the SG Special is a lot cheaper than other SGs. The differences are mostly cosmetic – the Special doesn’t come with bindings, but I talked to a guy at a guitar shop and he told me that the bindings are only cosmetic – they look nice, but they don’t really change the way the guitar plays or sounds. The pickups don’t come with covers either – again, I think the difference is mostly cosmetic, but in this case I think covers would be nice – they look better, and occasionally my high e string gets caught on the neck pickup, something that wouldn’t happen if I had pickups with covers. I know this is long-winded, but just one more thing – don’t buy an Epiphone, or an SG knockoff. Most Epiphones don’t have set necks, and so the sustain pretty much sucks, unless you get lucky and find one that has a neck that was bolted on really well. Also, the craftsmanship and electronics on USA Gibsons are top-notch. They don’t set them up very well out of the factory, but for $20 or $25, you can take it to a trustworthy guitar shop and have them set it up right. The SG looks like a million bucks and sounds even better, take it from this satisfied customer.

: I have an Epiphone SG Special that is Vintage red. I bought it for $270.00 almost new at a pawn shop. It payed nice, there was nothing wrong with it and it wasn’t even scratched. Well I bought it a few months ago and I want to sell it. How much would I sell it for, or should I sell it for? I’m thinking about selling it to a pawn shop. How much do you think they’d buy it for? Thanx.

A ’78 Gibson for $450? "Like new in condition"? Holy shit, did you get an incredible deal. More like winning the lottery than getting a bargain. The place I go to get my guitar set up was selling a USED Gibson SG Standard (probably made around 1995 or 2000) for $1,000 ; older (like 60’s or 70’s) used guitars, especially something like a Gibson SG, are often considered "vintage," so guitar shops tend to sell them for more than what it would cost new, ESPECIALLY if they’re in great condition, like it sounds like yours is. Was it made in ’78, or is it a ’78 reissue? Either way, you got a bargain. The Gibson SG Special Faded may be $769.98 in the catalog you looked at, but at least in Minneapolis, you would have a hard time finding anywhere selling it for more than $600 or so. Also, as far as the "faded" part, the gimmick is that the guitar is supposed to look older quicker, like you’ve been playing it for years when you’ve really only been playing it for months, kinda like when they were selling Levi’s jeans by telling people they would look broken in after just a few washes. I’ve had my SG Special Faded for almost half a year, and it still looks like it did when I bought it, but I figure it will start to "fade" pretty soon, not that it really matters that much to me one way or the other. I read something on some website where someone was reviewing the Gibson SG Special Faded, the guy said that John Lennon (or maybe it was Paul McCartney) stripped the varnish off, and afterwards his guitar had a "warmer tone," but I can’t verify that – I imagine the pickups change the tone a lot more than the finish. Someday maybe I’ll put some "gloss laquer finish" or something on it, but for now I’m more than happy with it, and don’t care if/when it looks worn. My basic understanding is, with the Special Faded, they skimp on all the stuff that is "cosmetic" – the finish (again, no "gloss laquer finish"), the bindings (no bindings), fingerboard may be left over from some other SG (I understand mine was left over from the SG Gothic, so it has half-moons, which I think is kinda cool – whatever fingerboard it sells with is probably quality), the pickups (same basic pickups, but the coils, or whatever, are covered with paper instead of whatever they usually protect them with – doesn’t affect the tone or play whatsoever), and "Gibson" is a decal on the headstock instead of embossed. Still made in the USA, with the same electronics, and (I think) the same craftsmanship as any other Gibson SG. Something to keep in mind – the Epis don’t come with the same pickups that the USA Gibsons do. The Epi I played, I still really liked its tone, so if you like the tone and the craftsmanship of an Epi, and you like how it plays, Epis will definitely be cheaper, but I would still suggest you go USA Gibson, including used, as long as you can afford it, and you plan on treating it well. Whatever you decide, good luck, I hope you enjoy playing as much as I do with my SG!

Hey, I have what I believe is a ’66 Harmony Archtop that’s missing a pickguard. Do any of you know where I can find a replacement one, or happen to have the dimensions so that i can fabricate one? The model number is: 1213. If anybody has one and can send me a scan of it in it’s original size, that’d be really helpful. My email is [email protected] Thanks!

Then, when you want distortion, you just kick the pedal on, and, hey presto! Easier than trying to change your amp settings half way through a song!!
