Hey, Im posting this for a friend. She has what seems to be a rare Hofner guitar….

    here’s what the label says,

    Hofner
    foreign
    no. 173
    verithin model 65-63
this master class guitar is covered by the guarantee supplier

If anyone could give me any info on the guitar/pics etc I would be very greatfull.

    Cheers

      Hi Alex,

I have a few Selmer catalogs from the 1960’s that may be of some use here. My earliest catalog (1961) lists the Verithin as Model 299. By 1963 there is a Verithin 64 going by the model number 5127. Unfortunately, my next available Selmer is a 1967. This catalog lists the Verithin 66 with a Model number 5137.

So, judging from this progression your guitar was produced in the mid 1960’s, probably 1965. I don’t know what the production numbers were during this time frame so I can’t really say whether your particular model is “rare” or not. I can tell you that in the U.S. 60’s model Verithins sell around the $1,000 mark.

If you want to have a look at the catalogs yourself I’ve got the 1963 and 1967 posted on my website VintAxe.com. cheers, SB

As for the strange numbering – who knows!?

Perhaps a bit more like this?

A lefty, too – always nice to see the cackhanders accommodated. I do suggest you go back to that link and scroll down to click on the “main index” link. Steve Russell’s Hofner site is excellent – I e-know him and Tim Fletcher quite well and they’re happy to reply to emails. That product code (65-63) sounds very odd to me. AFAIK, the “foreign” and “Verithin” labels suggest this guitar was distributed in Britain by Selmer. Still, I’d expect a number like 4574 or 4575 – I’ve never heard of a Hofner beginning with a 6.

If she has a rare one, Steve will be more than pleased to hear from you – especially if you can do a pic. I wouldn’t mind seeing a pic, if you can post one.

      close, but no cigar.

the model she has, has 3 p/u’s and a few switches – bass on/off, treble on/off and a mid switch i think.

      thanks for your help
