I am the original owner of a 1966 Gibson SG standard which I purchased new from Sam Ash. It is not the standard cherry color but is one of the custom colors called Pelham Blue. It is an identical color to the 1960 Cadillac. I have only played this guitar a few times in the late 60s when I was in a rock band. It is in the original condition in the hard case without any blemishes or parts replaced. I would consider it absolutely pristine! It even smells new and has all the original tags that came with it from the factory. Can anyone give me an idea of the value of this guitar? Over 12 years ago I went to Sam Ash to have the original strings replaced. Immediately many of the employees came to see the guitar because of it’s unusual color and did not believe at first it was original. After closer inspection they agreed and wanted to purchase it on the spot. At that time I knew I had something of value. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you SB. That is actually what I had in mind. I don’t need the money and I was told that these pieces from the mid 60s have been appreciating pretty well in the recent years. I still have never scene this color guitar on line or in person which should help with its exclusivity. I will definitely consider your suggestion as excellent advice. Thank you again.

      Hi Boca,

I just have one more thought concerning your guitar. While price guides are handy for getting a general idea of a guitar’s value they can be wildly inaccurate. You have a very desirable guitar in pristine condition which can add considerable dollars to the value. If your guitar were mine, I wouldn’t think of letting it go for less than $10,000 USD. Some may argue that it is not worth that today but I’ll bet it will be worth that in a very short period of time. If you don’t need the money right now, hold onto the guitar. It is a better investment vehicle than most anything else I can think of right now. I can almost promise you it will far outperform the stock market in the foreseeable future. I wouldn’t take my money out of it unless I absolutely had to. If you do decide to sell, work with an experienced high-end guitar dealer with an international clientele. SB

Thanks guys for all your help. I just wanted to let you know that after looking at one of the pods…….it reads 65 leading me to believe it might possibly be a 65 or 66. I don’t know if this matters at all but it was news to me! After some research and this forum I have a better idea now as to Value but still need the push as to whether or not to sell at this point. This is a great forum and thanks for the friendly imputs.

      Hi Bocatrip,

Thanks for the pic. I think your original question was about value. According to the 2005 VG price guide we are talking somewhere between $5,000-$7,000 USD. Given the condition of your instrument I think we are at $7,000. A lovely piece, thanks for sharing. SB

Thats a real tough one, ive seen 66′ cherry standards in UK go for £1600+ depending on condition, the maestro lyre trem unit helps too, but to have one in a non standard colour, with the candy tags and mint condition, who knows? double it? sounds like a real nice guitar, im an SG nut too, those guitar really do rock.
