2X12 cabinet and speaker selection
Submitted by myfoot on Thu, 09/06/2007 - 14:14.
I know this is pretty subjective but any comments or ideas about a 2x12 cab and which speakers for my JTM45 clone. I've seen lots of comments for this
http://www.avatarspeakers.com/ with One Celestion Vintage 30 and one G12H30 .Price seems pretty decent. Any other ideas. This one here is a bump up in price: http://www.mojaveampworks.com/index.php?id=2,0,0,1,0,0
Thanks for any help........
Vintage 30 and G12 is good, but how about a vintage 30 and a Greenback?? thats my combination in my 2x12 Marshall thats hooked up to my BiValve THD, but i gig with a 2x12 loaded with 2 vintage 30's and i use a Hiwatt DR103 100 watt head (1973) which was given to me by my old bass player Mick.
Vintage 30's are so good.
G12H and vintage 30 is a classic combo, first thing that sprang to mind, but I'm primarily a plodder so don't listen to me. Mojave also run the Plexi Palace forum and there is a whole category on speakers and cabs, plus a cat on Marshalls. A quick look there might score you a few ideas and comments.
Yep ,been looking over there as well .About every combination imagineable , but I may try to score a Greenback to go with the other 2 . See which combination works best. Got a $1000 head no sense scrimping on the speakers :P
Then how about 2 Alnico blues? only rated at 15 watts each, although it's well documented that they can go to 20 watts, use 2 of those and keep the volume down?
I suppose I asked for that :shock: I think at $250 a pop they may deserve to go to a higher priced amp. I'm pretty sure I'd be happy with the other 3 we've discussed so far :P
Don't you think the ALnico would go better with my tweed deluxe ?I'd only need one for that......and then later I'd only need one more for the 2X12. ..hmmm I like the way you think afterall :lol:
Call me unimaginative, but I've always fancied a Jensen P10R or P12R to go with my 5F1 and 5E3 clones. HST, I got a pair of semi-open 2x12" cabs fitted with pre-Audiom "Goodmans of England" era drivers and one of those cabs sounds great with either amp. Similar to the drivers in this WEM cabinet;

but I would guess that mine are earlier.
Goodmans are not as regarded as Celestion, and I don't particularly go a bundle on the 12" Audioms, but I like these early ones.
I've actually have a celeston clone in the 5e3 now that sounds very good . I think the Jensen P12Q or P12R would be a good choice .. Thanks for your thoughts
How about 1bassleft's old 2x12 cab sitting in my garage, i picked up an ebay auction for him in London and posted up the important amp part, but was left with a 2x12 cab minus the valve combo side.
The speakers are still in there, i was instructed to 'Dump them with extreme prejudice' , well when it came to it i couldn't dump them, the cat now uses it to sleep on, and the speakers inside are pure Taiwanese vintage, they say 8ohm, made in Taiwan, no wattage rating, umm come to think of it, anyone seen my rip saw?
