I was thinking of getting an Ashdown Fallen Angel head a while back as it sounds to me as good as the Messa Boogie dual rectifier for a fraction of the price and i just love the look of it but it didnt have a line level output on it and was going to get a pdi 09 or something simillar to put between the amp and cab for recording and then i log on to their site a few months later and find they have a new adition to their Fallen Angel range with line level output and digital effects built in, for about £300 this has got to be the best valve amp you can get anywhere for the price, sorry to sound like an advert but if anyone has any suggestions for a 30W – 60W tube amp head or combo before i get the FA60DSP please post.

      Hi jay667,

I don’t know if you have access to a copy of this month’s Vintage Guitar magazine (July 2005) but they do a side by side comparison of 10-15 “low watt” boutique amps. Of course, they consider any amp under a 100 watts as low watt. You might find the article interesting if you are shopping since it allows you to quickly compare all the features each amp offers. I would also suggest going to VintAxe.com and look under Custom Guitar Links. I have a pretty comprehensive list of amp builders and clicking through the links will allow you to see what everyone offers in your price range fairly quickly. Happy shopping, SB

Not played one but our old Bass player use to use Ashdown, and it was an amazing bit of kit, heard good stuff on the Fallen Angel too.

Jay, the Ashdowns are decent gear for decent prices. I don’t think the Fallen Angel would disappoint you. There are some nice, vintage, 30ish W combos for that money, but it can be a trial of patience and luck. If the Ashdown fits, then go for that. If DI is important, then the vintage amp falls off the radar anyway. Let us know how you go…
