Sorry if this post is a repeat, I looked but didn’t see anything.

I have a ’96 PRS standard. I was talking to a dealer a while ago and he said that PRS changed something in their design right at that year and that ever since the quality has been a lot worse.

Does anyone here know what this dealer is talking about, or was he just trying to move me over into buying a higher-margin guitar?

I had a good search of the ‘net but found no reference to it and have heard nothing anecdotally. The dealer may have been “Ed Roman”ing you.

Ah, mentioning the guy made me have a look and, sure enough, that’s where I found this on his “rants” page:
Years ago PRS guitars had no heels, Today they use this big flat heel on the back of the neck. In 1995 PRS switched to this monstrosity and it has remained ever since.
Often, people (including me) find Roman a PITA and don’t like dealing with him but he may have a point here: http://www.edroman.com/techarticles/prs_heel.htm

as the heel can get in the way of top-of-the-neck soloing. Not a problem for me, and it doesn’t seem to have affected PRS prices or sales, but it looks like a bit of cost-cutting.
